Rust or not, he removed them as to do an upgrade, had new ones so of course you'd fit them still. I wouldn't cut the races though, I'm sure there are tools to remove them, to close to causing damage.
I’ve changed out my CB650SC’s std ball bearings to taper roller bearing and back to std, then back to taper again 20+ years ago. I remember the ..fun I had chasing down some front end weave. Got it put to rights, but watching you work your magic today was a real treat. Somebody who really knows what he’s doing restores my faith just bit in mankind. Sorry Nick, Santa brought me some new items this year to make life a little easier, I seem to do so many head bearings it was worth the investment... and yeah, with the bar clamps, it's a BMW design that seems pretty logical to me... the Germans always think in a logical way with things like that, apparently you torque up the front bolts first, then nip up the rears to set the bars in place!
You are a professional. Okay, next time I buy a threaded rod let's say M12? And also a cutting tool made of metal rather than stone, and also the direction of rotation that takes the chips down and does not scatter them up... OK👍🤣 You too have a mark left on the chassis 5:12

Hi Ian, Glad the videos have been helpful. With classic and vintage bikes, the cost of a donor bike is prohibitive, and the ongoing cost of rare parts too can mount up out of control. Same goes for old Harleys, look how much you have to pay for something like a '65 Shovelhead !! just don't have the budget for those kinds of projects.. but of course, i would love to if i could.

I had such a game upgrading the head bearings on an NX650. Getting the cups out was horrible. Wish I'd seen this before. Brilliant video as always and the quality of production is excellent. Great job 👍
Hi Andy.. .the top cup was really tight and refused to shift, so i just cut it to save having to hammer too hard.. but the bottom one drifted out a lot easier... just working with the least trauma to the bike where possible mate... Have a great weekend both of you and keep safe aye.

I changed the bearings in my Speed Triple last year, they were totally knackered and rusty, I wish I’d have had the tools you used though, would have been much easier! :)

That was quick!! same factory fitted bearings on my TR650 (owned from new) when i replaced them last year. I don't power wash but mine were very rusty after 28,000 miles and she's kept in the livingroom.
Good video. What are the sockets called that you used at 3min 13secs to undo the washer on the head, and the tool at 7min to insert the cups for the bearings?
Interesting to hear your comments on jet washing. I never jet wash my bike, good old fashioned sponge and soapy water after a scrub down with de-greaser. Then just wash it all off gently with several buckets of warm water, and leather it dry. Were the headstock bearings universal, or are they an individual fit, they did look the same, but the camera CAN lie.
I bought the specified size bearings for this model, they were labeled for about 4 other, similar bikes too in the box.. so a pretty common size id say!

Sure thing brother, the one part of replacing head bearings is having to hammer the cups in which is always a little scary as they're so hard and brittle, far nicer to press them in gently... Excellent; the use of tools to place without damaging the tapered bearings I always wait for those "special effects" that you print very good sound and slow motion of the fall I think that manufacturers place balls instead of cones because it does not matter the duration, in the end the water will run out before the pressure wear those cones on my heavy duty pickup can last 180,000 miles properly adjusted and lubricated but if the water enters it will destroy them easily so the manufacturer places a cheaper ball bearing because the conical will not be an advantage in duration hug from patagonia

Guiltily thinking back 41 years ago, out in the back alley with my 350LC on it's side, and me with a carpenter's claw hammer and long steel spike, cursing a blue streak while installing new tapered rollers to replace the knackered-from-wheelies OEM ball bearings, I sure do find watching you do these therapeutic and soul soothing, lol

Jet washing your radiator is a silly idea :/ Recently I hosed my bike soaking some connectors behind the headlamp. It caused a lot of problems for me.Silly. Great video again . Many Thanks.
No spec in the manual for tapers on this bike..so i went with the setting for the Gold Wing, as a guide/test.. (14Nm), and the sweep action feels perfect... i will check them again with a "fall away" check once the wheels and mudguard etc is all in.!

You can still do head bearings with basic hand tools, the old videos are still there, nothing's changed... it may take a little longer, but the job's the same, good luck with it!
I was able to buy a Sealey 10 piece bridge bearing puller set on Amazon. Featured on another Del video replacing wheel bearings. So at least some tools are accessible. Being shipped to me from the UK. In some videos Del has links in the video descriptions to a UK website where you can probably order and have shipped to the USA.
Peter's right, Sealey ship worldwide, you just need to locate a supplier... at the moment the guys at Spanner Monkey are struggling a little with export orders due to various restrictions, but bigger firms like Amazon aren't, if in doubt contact Sealey directly in the UK to place your order and they should be able to sort out shipping for you through one of their suppliers.

I actually like doing steering head bearings and races. I have done several of my friends bikes this winter. Those were pretty bad. Investing in the tools to do it makes the job not so difficult.
I never even knew that there was a bearing press of that nature. Thanks for the video. Has me considering adding more to the tool box though as i have 2 bikes with approx 40,000 km each!
Hey buddy, yes i had it on the wish list for a long time, always got by with threaded bar or just tapping them in.. but this year i asked Santa nicely and got lucky..! a great way to insert the cups with no drama.
Its increasingly common for bikes to come off production lines with insufficient grease on critical bearings, and it doesn't help if a "technician" without knowing the factory torque settings has over tightened the stem. Both problems I have encountered.....along with that perennial favourite "a chimp with a pressure washer".
Ha ha.. i like that.!! And yeah, im hearing this a lot in folks comments, many finding practically dry bearings from the factory !! and this is the result aye.!

Those bearings were fine. What rust? Some witness marks in the bearing races where the rollers sat doesn't mean it's worn out.
They should be fine when you change them. It is not a repair.

That was me too mate, RD250 DX on 'L' plates.. 17 and keen as mustard, used to lean mine on an old mattress we had in the garden !

Del, did you torque the nut per factory specs with tapered bearings or ? Getting ready to to replace/upgrade to tapered on my 06 VFR800.
