“Pudding,” in the UK, as I understand, is a generic term that can refer to any number of desserts. In a bit of wordplay, this recipe translates the British pudding banoffee pie, a tart filled with sliced bananas, dulce de leche, and whipped cream, into an American custard-style pudding. Banana and dulce de leche are cooked into a silky, smooth custard and then layered with whipped sour cream, digestive biscuits (though you could use graham crackers), and more dulce de leche. To give the dessert a shareable
quality, I assemble it large-format. Any glass serving dish or bowl with a 2-quart capacity works, but assembling it in individual glasses is an option, too.

I really enjoy that Cal and Vinny ask questions and interact with Clare. They ask brilliant questions too!!! Y’all are a fabulous team!!!!
Argentinian here! If the dulce de leche is very thick you can just microvawe it for like 5-10 seconds, you can drizzle it to your heart's content and after a bit it'll firm right back up
(There's actually different types of ddl that have different consistencies and flavors, but I'm not sure if you get all the types over there)
Not enough banana flavored desserts in this world. So excited for this!
this is probably the most well-received dessert I've ever served. 5 times now and everyone goes crazy for it
Just made this gem for Christmas dessert this year...yum! I used some homemade gluten free molasses cookies, so everyone could eat it with no issues. So rich, flavorful, not too sweet, smooth and complex, with that lovely contrast of the sweet banana/salt/dulce de leche, and the sour cream/whipped cream. Thanks Claire for the entertaining and super informative video, and for adding a twist on a Christmas menu!!👍😋😃
Hi, Claire! Thanks so much for the recipe! This will be a great dessert for Eid! My big family are basically traditional Indonesians and I will introduce this dish to the table! It will be a great family reunions once Covid is gone!
Claire I love your content! Thanks so much for all you teach us!
Thanks for watching!
Love when Vinny asks you questions and talks to you and he is awesome 😊
Omg, a trifle?! Now all I can think about is "don'tbetrifling," from Novympia's parody video ✌️🤣
I made a half recipe of this and I’m having to actively resist making it again right now. It’s absolutely one of the most delicious things I’ve tasted. I made my own dulce de leche out of sweetened condensed milk bc my store didn’t have ddl. The Biscoff cookies were the perfect complement to the banoffee pudding. Thanks for another fabulous recipe, Claire! 😃
As a purist of just plain banana con dulce de leche straight out of the fridge, I profusely thank you for this! Also, if anyone's ever around Buenos Aires, you need to go for the banana tart of San Ceferino 😄
Thank you for the video, Claire! Hope you're enjoying this lovely spring and getting a chance to admire the blooming flowers and the bird songs
Love the "gormet" Easter egg for long time Claire followers. Gourmet Makes was so fun to watch. No gormet gummy worms but gushers and sour patch kids 😂😂
The "Would you ever make a [REDACTED] version" made me spit out my tea 🤣
You can see the war flashbacks on Claire eyes 😂😂
I'm so happy that Claire is happier now, and I never want to force her to be sad, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss watching her suffer a little
I loved that reference as those videos were how i discovered Claire and i came to them pretty late on so had loads of them to binge watch 😁
Good news, dear reader, Claire makes is filling that void in our brains
I made this yesterday. I made individual little parfaits. This was so yummy! My husband really loved it!
"would you ever try a version?" killed me
we all know what he said too 😂
Just made this and it’s so delicious. I did sweeten the whipped cream though as I have a sweet tooth.
Claire is awesome. Her recipes always have a sophistication and a wow factor, yet she’s wonderfully able to guide us and make it seem easy!! Thank you Claire.
People already started to like me more because of your recipies 😂. After this one they will definitively love me 😊. My family and my friends love pudding desserts and this is the next level.
I do a pretty good southern banana pudding. I've been doing it for years It's something I serve at every holiday occasion. I get people from work to ask if I will make some for them for special occasions or birthdays too. The biggest game changer for me was using biscoff cookies a few years ago when I needed to make an extra pudding for Thanksgiving but it was a day before Thanksgiving and there were no vanilla wafers left. No generic, I checked a few different stores around town. Nobody had them, but they had tons of biscoff cookies, so in a pinch I used them and I have never gone back. That is my secret, regular recipe pudding just use digestive cookies. I'm eager to try this I just need to get deeper trifle bowl
Lived in the south my whole life, never has anyone had the gall to hand me banana pudding warm. Always chilled to perfection. No idea what hunchback mountain people you've met that eat it warm...
I thought the same but I think she meant room temp. My grandma would put hers in the oven long enough to brown the meringue on top then chill it. But she’d set it out before we ate so it was just under room temp by the time we ate it
Same haha I used to bake for a BBQ place in NC and we would never serve it warm- i wonder if it’s a very specific regional thing? Like one specific place in GA or something
i had to pause and immediately come to the comments when she said that! i was so confused! glad to know i'm not the only one. banana pudding is a dessert that never touches the oven and lives in the fridge. i've never heard of someone doing it differently!
Is it assembled warm?
I had to come here too because I have never in my southern life ever had warm banana pudding. Come on down, Claire, come to my house. I'll make you some!
I make a version of this for special occasions and it's such a beautiful and underrated dessert
This was sooo delicious! It was my first time making a dessert with bananas other than banana bread; it was a massive hit! Not too sweet unlike many cakes and absolutely delightful! 11/10!!
I made this just the other day following your recipe. I did not know it before. This must be one of the most delicious desserts I have ever eaten. Thank you for this video
I can't wait to try this, the biscoff cookies sound perfect with it too. One thing that threw me off though is saying that southern banana pudding is served warm and baked. I've never heard of anyone doing this. otherwise the heat would brown the raw bananas on the bottom. You're supposed to make it at least a few hours advance of serving though and keep in the fridge while the nilla wafers slowly soften. Also, check out Paula Deen's banana pudding recipe. It has cream cheese, condensed milk, and whipped cream mixed into the pudding. It's so decadant.
I'll definitely be trying your banoffee trifle soon 😋
banoffee desserts are one of humanity’s greatest achievements tbh
“i like sour cream so much” claire declaring her love for sour cream was so funny for no reason lol
We love bananas in this house! I’m goin’ to try this recipe this weekend! Great video! Looks delicious!
Yess another video! I was sad to see no new video last week, I totally forgot it was easter week:')
Excited to watch this one!
I know what I'm making for dessert this weekend. The boyfriend LOVES banana pudding, time to take it to the next level. Great videos Claire and team.
I just got your book and this is on my list of things to try. You make everything look so good. Thank you!
Looks absolutely delicious
While it is a portmanteau of banana & toffee, very occasionally you will get one where the whipped cream is coffee flavoured (or you did in the late 90s when this was everywhere) - the coffee is actually really good with it because it provides a bit of a foil for the sweetness.
I was so excited when I saw this recipe in the book! Definitely going to try it out this summer when it's too hot for baking.
I think it is so fun to make desserts like this. It’s so different from my normal baking and it is always delicious
I appreciate that Claire either works in bowls that are way too big or way too small. There is no in between.
I did this recipe today it was sooo good! Next time I will definitely try it with biscoff cookies 😊
SO glad someone else uses biscoff cookies for pudding like this!!!
Missed you last week Claire! Came back with a banger!!!
I didn't know my life needed a bowl that looked like cabbage until I watched this.
We’re gunna have to to get some “Verdict: Mmm” merch
I love your green cabbage serving bowl. My nana has the same one.
Omg I’m so glad I found this channel!
i always love that i felt a connection w claire bc she is left handed and so am i, but when she said 3/5 members of her family are lefted handed i couldn't believe it, 4/5 members are left handed too :) left handed bakers for life !
This one looks SO good. I just made the Creme Brulee and it was wonderful. Really excited for the variety of desserts in this book.
I NEED 14 OF THESE RIGHT NOW
Love Mind of a Chef and this recipe looks so delicious
Cooper’s Hawk used to have Bannoffee Pie and it was incredible but they removed it from the menu and I was so sad when I found out. It is so delicious.
Me, a Brazilian, wondering what does she mean when she says "banana" without being specific on which type of banana she's talking about. It looks like banana d'água, by the way, although some people call it banana nanica. I will 100% try to do this at home! Looks perfect! ❤❤
We only really get one kind of banana in America. It's name is yellow Cavendish banana. Maybe that can help you find out which one it is in Brazil
Any ripe banana that you can peel and eat raw will work. I'm from Puerto Rico and we have a few varieties here too. 🙂
@@Turbendido thank you for your answer! Yellow Cavendish really is banana d'água in Portuguese. Its shape is too much to miss!
@@roxpr2000 I know now which variety it is! Thank you so much! I love how you were trying to get me not to use plantain! Hahahahaha
Banana prata ia ficar top também, mas a nanica geralmente é a melhor pra doces
I've made this twice now, and based on the quantity that claire uses, you're probably gonna have dulce de leche left over, so what I did is slowly incorporated some really hot water and it liquefied into a more caramel like consistency. I know someone else said you can microwave it, but adding water makes it so you don't have to reheat it multiple times. you could probably also do hot milk to keep the theme, but I didn't have any leftover. it didn't dilute the flavor really at all and just made it nice and smooth. I also didn't blend my banana mixture and instead added the dulce de leche and let it get hot and mix with the mashed banana and then slowly incorporated the milk so that it would be relatively uniform. this tip works for if you dontnhave an immersion blender (I can't find mine) and don't feel like dirtying your regular blender. only do this, though if you plan on straining it because that's what allows it to be smooth similar to Claire's.
Claire I have made this many times best dessert ever thank you !
Perfection, as always. Thank you.
ive made this one!!!! its DELICIOUS
Glad you liked it!!
I made this for Thanksgiving and it was DELISH!
I made this for Easter and it was really good. I think i might use 2 tbs of cornstarch next time though, 1/4 cup is so much and it gelatinized almost immediately on mixing. As a result it was hard to fully incorporate and the eggs curdled a little. Never had that happen with a custard before!
I'd also like to know what black magic made your dulce de leche so nice to work with because mine was not in any way pourable or easily spreadable. 😂
I can't wait to try this! You think you can add whole bananas to this? Or would they go bad/too brown?
Is warm banana pudding a thing? I'm from the south and I've always had it chilled.
This trifle looks amazing though. I love banoffee pie so I think I'll definitely try this.
Northerner here but I think it depends where in the South you are. I found out about two versions (warm/cool) from an episode of Good Eats.
Same thought, came to see if anyone else said this! I’m not from the South but had plenty of banana pudding and it’s always served cold.
I didn't think that I'd be too interested in Banoffee Trifle (haha), but it's an interesting recipe. One thing I'd add is toasted broken-up walnuts. For both taste AND texture. Another addition I'd consider is cardamom powder.
Omg it looks SO GOOD 🤤
oh I’m definitely making this for Christmas
YAY, another video!
More to come!
When Claire talks about whipping cream, it reminds me of those scientists in sci-fi, movies.
Thanks for this, Claire!
This is the first recipe I made from What’s for Dessert, sooo good 🤤
i love this channel
I love Biscoff cookies and the spread. Although I'm always reminded of the FilmCow video "OMG Biscoff Spread" and if you haven't seen it you will always quote it afterwards 😂
Fun drinking game: Take a shot everytime Claire says "Banana" 🤣
17:31 Bon Appétit Test Kitchen flashing in front of her eyes 🤣🤣🤣
Lol, holy shit! I just made my own version of this last week. I steeped the ripe bananas in hot milk for 24 hours and strained it in fine strainer. Made a carmel, then blitzed it in the food processor, and used both to create a pastry cream. Made the Biscoff crust like you’d make for Oreos. Piped the cream onto the crust and topped with a mixture of blitzed Valrhona feves, VA peanuts, and salt crumble.
this week's therapy !
I thought I was the only one that liked bananas and sour cream together! Bananas and cream cheese are delicious as well. :)
Will be making this for a bday! Thanks! Just want to ask how long will this stay good in the fridge? Thanks
Claire i have a question ? You think we can replace the dulce de leche with Mexican cajeta or you think the tanginess of the goat milk in the cajeta will change the flavor
Can't wait for Ben to make this!
Omg claire I have the same lettuce leaf bowls!
There is something so wonderfully comforting and parental about Claire's smile.
i like this kitchen
I wish CLAIRE WOULD MAKE A DESSERT WITH MEXICAN CAJETA WHICH IS A GOATS MILK “BURNT” CARAMEL ITS ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS AND THE FLAVOR IS UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE I WOULD LOVE TO SEE WHAT SHE CREATES WITH THAT
I think the main thing missing here....is to have your fellow workers taste it....for their verdicts...also i miss having the other people around that taste and laugh and joke with you all..
Oh my gosh banana that isn’t banana bread hurrah. This trifle looks amazing. It would be dangerous I would just sit and eat the whole thing. I should’ve known Claire you use the under appreciated banana and give it its rightful place from and center
Where in the south is banana pudding hot? I grew up in South Carolina, have multiple family recipes for banana pudding, its at every gathering I can remember going to from church to reunions to functions, I get it all the time at restaurants when its available, and I've never seen or heard of a hot banana pudding. I've made banana pudding myself for years nearly every holiday and it's always assembled cold, never baked and served cold.
Thanks for a wonderful recipe tutorial! Do you have a recommendation on an egg substitute for this recipe? Maybe gelatin? 🤷🏻♀️ My daughter is allergic to eggs but I’d love to try this out. Thanks!
Custard powder (basically cornstarch) was developed by a man whose wife was allergic to eggs, so she could still have custard. I think that would get closer to this recipe than adding gelatine.
plain gelatin can work and won't add any extra flavors.
Omg, omg, omg. Love banofee.
Alexa, clear my calendar I have to go make pudding
this is going right in my recipies bookmark folder!!! i love banoffee pie and American puddings!
Well I’m off to make a parfait version of this because I’m certain that if I made the full trifle version I would eat the whole thing while binge rewatching Downtown Abbey.
this looks bomb
Claire, what is the brand of the red spatula used in the video? I am forever in search of the perfect sturdy, flexible spatula. Thank you for the recommendation!
Hi Claire,
I want to make this for Christmas Dessert this year! It looks delicious! But I love fresh sliced bananas with cream and/or pudding. Can I add some in the layers? Did you test that? (Bet you did!) If so how were they? Do you think it’ll work? Thanks so much!
I love your videos. 🥰
I’m so happy i follow you💓
vinny really said g****** m**** gummy worms 😭 IWDFCFTBATK flashbacks
What would be a good substitute for banana in this dessert? Love the trifle concept. I grew up with trifle at all family get togethers. My mom and her side of family is from Scotland so we always had trifle. I love dolce de Leche but bananas are total no go with me. Don’t like them and I’m allergic to them.
I’m the first! Looks amazing and watching now :)
I love you claire❤❤❤
Although I enjoy watching you and all the cool things you make, most of my time is spent watching Anti chef, it is fun watching someone who is not a trained chef attempting very hard recipes, and often he gets it right, not always on the first attempt though. If anyone likes cooking shows Anti chef is worth watching
Thanks! Just saw that channel recommended on my feed and thought it might be too clickbaity
I'm not British, I'm Australian, but I had the impression that British "pudding" generally referenced a food that was (maybe at least initially) supposed to be steamed or boiled in some kind of casing (cloth or edible). Including savoury foods like black pudding. Idk.
That looks wonderful, but who's Blanche? 😂 I will add that southern banana pudding is never baked or served warm. I'm def southern and warm banana pudding is not a thing, not in Texas anyway. Thanks for the video, it looks fantastic.
Dulce de leche ⭐⭐⭐
Do you think you Could make this Banoffee trifle in a spring form pan.
Im from Georgia and was raised on banana pudding, but I have never heard of it being warm or baked, it's always cold, wondering if any other southerns do it warm or cold??
Oh wow that looks so delicious and very addictive I bet. I love banana desserts, sour cream whipped with whipping cream would taste amazing. Yum
