I'm an ESL teacher, and let me tell you that for only 2 years of studying, that monk's level of English is really impressive. He has great control of basic grammatical structures and tenses, even the past perfect, which wouldn't be expected yet. He correctly uses infinitives, prepositions of time and adverbs of frequency, connectors like "so" and "because" and "but", discourse markers like "Actually", "you know" and "Like", and alternative forms of the verb To Be such as "There were". He has a wide range of vocabulary when talking about familiar situations. His pronunciation is only lacking when tries to produce sounds specific sounds, like the "juh" sound at the end of knowleDGE, and he repeats certain phrases a lot, but is otherwise 100% intelligible. Overall, I'd rate his English as a low/mid intermediate level, something which most students require 3-4 years to achieve. The fact that he has achieved this level by studying along in his free time is very impressive. Great work!

Absolutely, if you want more insight into how specifically that language “acquisition” happens, I suggest looking up immersion learning/input hypothesis and the linguist Stephen Krashen. This fellow is just another example of how it’s successful. Lotta European people do it from just simply consuming the internet as the vast majority of it is in English. Hope this helps

there are also plenty of ppl in western countries waiting for ppl to come so they can have a conversation in a language they learned. For example, I'm Canadian (and now french) and if I met a French person that would be sick.

@@Preetzole The thing is, even outside of a meritocracy, the people who want to make it can. A meritocracy just makes that movement perceptively easier. You can do anything against any odds, not saying this is easy or approachable. Ngonkham is the type of person who will make it no matter the circumstance, or at least the odds are in his favor.
I had a similar experience in Ethiopia in 2019 when I worked with some nomadic pastoralists. I think about those guys all the time (and chat with the one that has a fb), and those experiences and conversations have drastically changed my view on the world and myself. I love that you have this footage to remember it by and the recognition that this is such a special experience, because I can guarantee you that this will all stay with you, Kodiak, and Ngonkham for a long time.

I don't know how sexuality is viewd in Laos (or in bordering countries) but the fact that the monk asked for both boyfriend and girlfriend really shocked me as a queer person... Due to life experiences being open about my sexuality and gender has always been hard so seeing that there's acceptance even in a little temple in laos really put a smile on my face! Hope the best for all the monks!
This is really surprising to me as well. I doubt Buddhists see it as completely morally acceptable and it might be a cautious question because they saw two guys traveling. However the overall openness seems unimaginable in my Christian context, I've only met one priest that was as open to the world and other cultures and philosophies and not a single one that didn't presuppose heterosexuality for everyone

But our culture all over the world has been changed by the Christians and Muslims, so some Buddhists are against homosexuality but have no good arguments.

I’ve been lucky enough to travel as well and I can relate to @15:40 .. there’s something about having a conversation with someone from a completely different culture and knowing with near 100% certainty that you will never see them again. It’s almost like people lose any social anxiety and immediately begin talking about their outlook on life, happiness, importance, and the human condition. The irony is that, in most cases, no matter how different your cultures are, the answers are always the same. Friends, family, and community. These encounters are by far my favorite thing about traveling.

I tend to shy away from travel vlog content because it usually consists of what I consider to be cringe confrontations that seem to originate from the vlogger. This is quite the opposite. What an amazing experience you had, as did the Monks it seemed. They are so inquisitive, kind and funny. I never would have imagined that it was his first time speaking English with someone. I truly hope he gets to travel and see the world, I don't doubt his drive to accomplish that dream. I came back here to watch this a second time because I was so inspired by how hardworking and dedicated these monks were! They inspired me to get up and do the chores that I usually find incredibly difficult to motivate myself to do. A bit of lunch and then I will buckle down and study! These monks were truly spreading the name of their temple by spreading happiness with their open, inquisitive, and humble natures. A very pure human interaction. I hope the monks that subscribed can see this video and the lovely comments and realize the positive impact they have had on strangers. I hope all of them can accomplish all of their goals and find what they are seeking in life. ຂອບໃຈ
I'm not in a position to donate, as a 17 year old I don't really have a good method of donating, but Ngonkham is amazing, and I hope to see him in the future fulfilling his dreams. This is the other side of life that isn't seen very often, just people, living day by day, working on themselves and doing other things. As I said before, I hope Ngonkham finds success, as well as anyone there, as they are the ones that have to work for it and not give up, unlike the millionares and billionares in the media and news that had a strong headstart in the vast majority of cases. I also have a small idea into what happens in South Asia, as my uncle has a girlfriend from Thailand, and she is similar to them, just living their lives in wherever they can manage to get themselves on their own or maybe through family, it gives another perspective that is interesting and inspiring to see, as they are the ones that truly work for themselves and must motivate themselves.
I’ve only played geoguessr a few times, but you have become my favorite content creator on the platform, absolutely loving the new travel content too. You just seem so genuine and enjoy the little things in life, it’s contagious. Massive respect for what you’re doing to help Ngonkham achieve his dreams, RAINBOLT is for the people.

I've been asked a lot about my dreams and I usually answer for the job I really wanted, but not more of what i've always wanted to do. Traveling the whole world and seeing it on people's eyes is just fulfilling. I wish I had the chance to do it too at some point. Thank you trevor for seeing and appreciating the other side of not having the ease or opportunity to do these things. It was beautiful.
This was so good, I wish you guys could keep updating on him and his journey. I do want to say as someone with similar goals (I also learned English just on the internet) that aside from giving him the money, you should help him manage it. I know he’s a monk so o bet he will be better than most people with his money, but when people that haven’t had much money get a lot of it, they find themselves in trouble sometimes.

It's always surprised me that depending on where you go in eastern Asia, the attitude towards things like that is vastly different, even from province to province. Definitely surprised me to hear him say that. Some cultures it has been normalized for hundreds of years, when in others it is a completely taboo and inconceivable thing to even discuss openly.

Because the US has been taking great pains to wipe it off the face of history. Literally. They are, by all conceivable metrics, the most bombed country on the planet, a distinction earned in no small part from the US.
This is the shit that makes travelling the world worth it, the meeting of cultures and the wholesome interactions. It reminds us that in spite of our differences, we all share the same humanity.
What an amazing experience you had, as did the Monks it seemed. They are so inquisitive, kind and funny. I never would have imagined that it was his first time speaking English with someone. I truly hope he gets to travel and see the world, I don't doubt his drive to accomplish that dream. Setting up to help him with his dreams is beyond wonderful and I know I will see a video of you guys visiting and or traveling in the years to come. It sounds corney but I truly believe that you and Kodiak were meant to be there that day. His writings are beautiful and all of the Monks were wonderful.

I came back here to watch this a second time because I was so inspired by how hardworking and dedicated these monks were! They inspired me to get up and do the chores that I usually find incredibly difficult to motivate myself to do. A bit of lunch and then I will buckle down and study! These monks were truly spreading the name of their temple by spreading happiness with their open, inquisitive, and humble natures. A very pure human interaction. I hope the monks that subscribed can see this video and the lovely comments and realize the positive impact they have had on strangers. I hope all of them can accomplish all of their goals and find what they are seeking in life. ຂອບໃຈ

I'm not in a position to donate, as a 17 year old I don't really have a good method of donating, but Ngonkham is amazing, and I hope to see him in the future fulfilling his dreams. This is the other side of life that isn't seen very often, just people, living day by day, working on themselves and doing other things. As I said before, I hope Ngonkham finds success, as well as anyone there, as they are the ones that have to work for it and not give up, unlike the millionares and billionares in the media and news that had a strong headstart in the vast majority of cases.
I also have a small idea into what happens in South Asia, as my uncle has a girlfriend from Thailand, and she is similar to them, just living their lives in wherever they can manage to get themselves on their own or maybe through family, it gives another perspective that is interesting and inspiring to see, as they are the ones that truly work for themselves and must motivate themselves.

I've been asked a lot about my dreams and I usually answer for the job I really wanted, but not more of what i've always wanted to do. Traveling the whole world and seeing it on people's eyes is just fulfilling. I wish I had the chance to do it too at some point. Thank you trevor for seeing and appreciating the other side of not having the ease or opportunity to do these things. It was beautiful.

I do want to say as someone with similar goals (I also learned English just on the internet) that aside from giving him the money, you should help him manage it. I know he’s a monk so o bet he will be better than most people with his money, but when people that haven’t had much money get a lot of it, they find themselves in trouble sometimes.

This conversation was amazing to see, its a special thing to be able to talk with people from other cultures and backgrounds and see how even besides our diffeents how we can still relate to so many things and connect with people. This type of conversations dont happen to often in life, but one cannot measure how meaningful they really are

It's always surprised me that depending on where you go in eastern Asia, the attitude towards things like that is vastly different, even from province to province. Definitely surprised me to hear him say that. Some cultures it has been normalized for hundreds of years, when in others it is a completely taboo and inconceivable thing to even discuss openly.
That genuinely made me happy. Won't even get that here in the US, at least where I'm from.
