  • Let's run our new Toyota Tacoma through the Rubicon! This video almost didn't happen believe it or not. Shaun from Story till now talked me into doing a video on the way to the trail! So big thank you to Shaun for not only coming down from Canada for this trip but for convincing me to make a video as well.
    The Rubicon is a legendary trail. Let's do what we can to keep it open. Pick up trash, clean up spills and do what you can to keep this place open for generations! I hope that you enjoy this video enough to get outside and live life! Make these memories ASAP!

      If you have the locker on it turns off abs, tacomas have a anti roll back feature that uses the abs, many times if I’m using the locker and I roll back just a inch it will shut the truck off and say trans temp high and oil pressure low

    Nate, another great video to add to the pile already made. You do get it and do a great job of showing and sharing it with us all. Coincidentally, I live about 5 minutes down the hill from Shaun's place. The two of you, with all your great filming, and your great fab skills, have inspired me to be out in the beautiful PNW even more over the past 2 years. Currently, I have a standard run-of-the-mill SUV with decent tires, and it gets me to 80% of the places we can all enjoy. And that is a lot of ground already covered. Now there's a set of 2012 1-ton axles sitting in my shed, and I hope that one day I can have the vehicle that can take all four of my kids, the wife and dog with me to enjoy these very places that you and Shaun take us in these videos. That's a big project. I also love the fact that no one gets left behind. Great work, and good on you.

    Sounds like you need a standalone engine management system. Something you can tune to do what you want when you get possible issues. The biggest upside and downside to modern vehicles is how smart the management systems are.

    So the tacoma do have a low oil pressure light come on if its been on a weird incline. Its normal what people do to fix it add a half quart of oil if offroading a lot so you wont have that issue. Theres only been 1 person ive seen that has killed their engine because of it. The pressure light happened to be going down hill while offroading because someone infront broke down i just shut the truck down and waited till they were fixed and never had the issue again. I have a 2017 tacoma trd sport lifted with air lockers and all that too

    I did an upgrade on a buddies Tacoma by installing a cotter pin in the transmission line "bypass" block to keep the lines open at all times. In addition to that an added trans cooler up front and he hasn't had further issues. Hope that helps.

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It definitely does! I always consider a cooler for towing but this would be a good idea for crawling aswell. 👍

    • @PNW_Rodeo
      @PNW_Rodeo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@DirtLifestyle Nate, pinning that plunger in on the bypass block is very helpful in keeping the temps down before they get hot. You can find it inline with the trans lines under the passenger side. There's a plunger on the side with a tiny hole on either side of it, like a hydraulic timing belt tensioner. Push that plunger in and hold it while threading the cotter pin through to retain it. Love the videos and I'm glad I could provide some helpful info. 👍

    • @rickwhitmire7933
      @rickwhitmire7933 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is this only for an Automatic Trans? The cotter pin deal. I’ve seen my low oil pressure like come on, once in 70,000 miles. But I was at an extreme angle.

    • @PNW_Rodeo
      @PNW_Rodeo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah it's for the transmission cooler bypass valve. It's s small block between both lines that is closed when the fluid temp is below a set temp (re-routes fluid back to transmission instead of cooler). When the fluid reaches temp the valve opens and allows the fluid to go to the cooler up front. Pinning it locks it open 100%.

    My 2017 Tacoma had the same oil pressure issue, once, mid climb on a ledge, on Charleau Gap trail. Wasn't an issue before or since on equally steep climbs or descents. Really like the truck but I hate the "nanny" tendencies of all the electronics.

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is a great way to describe it. "Nanny" electronics are currently the only thing failing and unfortunately they are taking out perfectly functional systems like cruise control and traction control. I can live with the low oil issue since it's only occasional but it is still kind of lame lol. In any case the only problems I'm having are related to these overbearing nanny systems.

    Does this truck have an auxiliary transmission cooler? I'm pretty sure a '21 Tacoma no longer comes with a "tow package" trans cooler. Toyota has really skimped on proper transmission cooling when it comes to rock crawling and heavy towing in stop and go traffic. The internal radiator transmission cooler just simply isn't enough. An auxiliary cooler with a fan would probably solve the temp issues.

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is definitely a worthwhile suggestion. I wonder how they would handle a transmission warranty if I added a cooler?

    • @andrewo8987
      @andrewo8987 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DirtLifestyle It definitely will void your transmission warranty. For now you could install a ScanGauge/Ultragauge in your cab to monitor transmission temperature when wheeling. Then install a cooler once the truck is out of the powertrain warranty. From what I understand it has to get crazy hot to turn the truck off.

    Cool video. I'm not a Guru but I believe what you may need to do with the truck is find out if HPtuner is supporting the 2021 or 22 year and then I would pull your oil pan and modify the location of the oil pump pickup tube and maybe your pan if need be and you may want to add a slosh or baffle plate to help hold oil in the bottom of the pan. We do it with the LS/LT engine pans for custom fitting into classics. Depending on what HPT supports you can go in and turn off the codes and check eng lt and even remove the sensor if needed. With what you've done to the truck there's no dealer that'll touch it for warranty. There sticky that way (worked at some) ABS & traction is another issue. Toyota has programming in them for safety shifts vs rpm vs spd that mixes in the trans, abs and tcs programming......if you turn off your TC system it will still operate under certain conditions and engage abs under certain conditions. Toyota's way of thinking they accounted for your safety. I'm not aware of a way around it yet. Like your vid's. I'm just down the road from you in Redmond OR. I'm building a 66 Stout right now and we have a 4runner & Tundra that I've had the same problems with.

    • @MH-ih7rh
      @MH-ih7rh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good motor but not really made for off road. I believe the guy who made OVTUNE mentioned that oil pools in the valve covers and has trouble draining back, hence the smoking that people see. There was something in there also about a bad oil pan design as well with the oil pickup tube and it leading to starvation. I don't think that the Toyota engineers pictured the truck going "that off road".

    Just curious can you go on the Rubicon in a stock vehicle and make it around all the hard stuff? My little Tacoma only has 31 10.50 R15 on it. I know she's not a rock crawler but would love to see The View and experience the ride.

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only stock vehicle that I would use on the rubicon is the 2 door bronco sasquatch. And even that would take on alot of damage. But with stock lockers front and rear plus stock 35s you would at least have a shot. Sliders and good bumpers are a must or else your truck will start to look like a raisin by the end. I wouldn't recommend it man...

    Another amazing video Nate!
    Ive experienced the same thing with my tacoma, and it was an easy fix for me.
    I got all of the same errors when I lifted and put 33"s on my 21 Tacoma- all that was needed was a front sensor recalibration. Before I got my calibration done, I took it offroad and it also shut off with a high transmission temp. / low oil pressure screen.
    After I got it calibrated, the issues disappeared and haven't come back. I wonder if the stinger on your front bumper is getting in the way of the calibration?
    I'm not sure why your dealership wouldn't have been able to figure out the calibration issue though if that is the issue... the master tech buddy at my dealership is scratching his head too lol

    Great video Nate. I did the Rubicon a few years ago, 3 of us in 2 well built JKs. We ran the entire trail in one very long day. Maybe not the best way to do it, but it was our choice. We hit the trailhead very early and got to Tahoe very late. We are not campers so it was the way we wanted to do it. The only thing we bypassed was the soup bowl. Couple of thngs.....the good: Awesome trail, awesome views. A trail every off roader needs to do. The bad: The people on the trail. As I saw you do at least once, we picked up a LOT of trash. So much so that by Cadillac hill (you should have shown people the Cadillac off the trail) we no longer had room to haul any more. I have to say the people we ran into were not the friendliest people I have ever met. Its a different crowd than Moab or CO trails. We came across a Land Rover that was broken down. The guy was staying with the truck while his friends went to get parts. He was there 3 days already. But he knew if he left his truck, it would be stripped when he got back. We gave him food and water which he desperately needed. The worst episode was after Rubicon Springs we encountered 3 very old beat to hell pick up trucks. One was broke down on the trail. The 3 guys were drunk as shit and armed. We offered to help, which they refused. We then said we would just sneak past them, to which one of them, with a Glock proudly displayed in his waist band said "no, you will wait until we have this truck fixed and moved". Now there was plenty of room to go around, but they were drunk and probably high on meth. (that is meth country after all). It was an unfortunate experience but not all that rare on that trail. I read on Pirate that while we were there, a guy left his travel trailer at the trail head only to return days later and find several bullet holes in it. As he posted on line, how did they know if he was in it or not? That said, it is still a must do trail. Just go knowing that it attracts a rougher crowd than what you find in other wheeling areas. At least that is what we encountered. Could be we were just unlucky in that regard.

    Wow,
    Haven't run the 'Con in probably 25yrs!
    I've run it 3 times in my Early Bronco, once with a trailer in tow.
    Broke a rear alloy shaft on two separate occasions.....yeah it's a pretty tough trail and pulling the third member at Spider lake was not fun!
    Plan on running it next spring/summer with my step son and his 3 linked front FJ80 axled 1st gen Tacoma and me in my '85 SB pickup.
    Should be fun!
    Tip: Bring spares for stuff you think you might break and you won't break, but leave them home and.......

    Nice video and comments at the end. My wife and I were able to check the Rubicon off my bucket list last year. We're in our early 60's and along the lines of what you're saying at the end, we are now planning and making trips that we thought we'd do after retirement. But that's still a few years away and seems to be getting more distant with current situations. So we're doing them now. Cheers!

    Problems, troubles, and breakdowns are half the fun (as long as its not catastrophic and/or injuries involved.) When things go wrong, it makes things exciting. It gives reason to stop, have fun, joking around with each other, work together, and overall just enjoy the experience. When things go perfectly smoothly, it seems like things go by too quick and it can be "boring" (relatively at least. Its never boring going on an adventure haha)

    My Tacoma does that too while climbing steep hills “transmission fluid overheated”. I was told that it’s not really overheated, it’s only because the truck is at too steep an angle where not enough transmission fluid is detected by the sensor. All the other cruise control stuff are mainly because of your lift and front bumper/grille changes messed up the sensor.

    The solution to the transmission overheat is a manual swap! There’s been a few trails on my 6MT taco that I had no issues while my AT counterparts struggled with.
    I’m not sure how much it will help with the shutting off problem on inclines but I’ve heard from a few people that putting an oil catch can or an air oil separator in helps alleviate oil burning issues. Supposedly the crankcase vent is on the driver side rear valve cover and at steep inclines pools up with oil and makes its way back to the intake.
    My suggestion is maybe drop the oil pan and baffle it like race cars so you don’t hit oil starvation and then add in that separator/catch can to prevent smoking

Rear carrier split in half in a dana 44 with a lock right and we replaced it with a Detroit out on the rock slabs.
