- This Terraria weapon is an absolute monster... The Flying Dragon. In this video, we take a look at an extremely powerful melee weapon a lot of people miss due to its difficult obtainability. The question is, does its power back up the fact you have to farm the Old Ones Army to the final wave and defeat the not so easy boss Betsy? I was wondering when someone would talk about this weapon! Despite the Old One’s Army being a bit of a pain to grind, I think this one is really worth it- it just shreds everything, especially for its place in progression
well the place in progression is what holds it back, it basically has to compete with pillar weapons (because if you can beat Golem, you can beat Cultist, it's not like getting fragments summons ML either, you can just save and quit) that have the same if not better dps while needing much less effort to obtain, for OOA you have to go through the previous 2 tiers multiple times to get better sentries AND get through tier 3, likely multiple times
Never leave out on the 2 free summons you always have available with bewiching table.

For me the flying dragon is a glorified terra blade, sure it is worse in terms of attack speed but it has great damage and goes trough walls which is extremelly good for events and some bosses, it's only downsides are the width of the projectile and the way of obtaining

Another useful tip for grinding the Old One’s Army - you can place the Etherian Mana into a vault/piggy bank/void bag and if you don’t open it until you start a new Eternia crystal then it will stay and accumulate the more you put in.
Do this a few times and you can spawn like 20 traps on wave 1 to make it much easier.

Yes, just make sure to NOT open that storage when the event isn't active, or the mana will evaporate.
You could also cheese actual bosses with it, albeit it's a bit impractical to stack that much mana, you could technically evaporate, say, daytime empress. Stack mana, place actuators under the stand, bomb all the way to the underworld and out of bounds, activate the event and drop the crystal to be unreachable for the enemies using the previously placed actuators. Move out of events range and build a set-up that let's you stack traps on one block (actuator on a block wired to a timer with a patch of blocks for the traps to fall onto). As long as you have enough summons you could cheese very high quantities of bosses until wave 7 comes in, although I'm not quite sure if the waves progress out of events range or whether Betsy would spawn near you.
It's impractical because of sheer amount of mana you'd have to grind to actually get to the point of melting bosses - amount of sentries placed nears the amount of entity limit and hence you'll need 1-2k mana depending on the type of trap (Lightning or Mine)
Edit: Checked the source, it's*5-10k* mana. Talk about overkill

I feel like most of the weapon drops from the old one’s army are absurdly busted for their place in progression but end up going under the radar because that event is probably the one event that’s more annoying to deal with than the pillars, if not busted at least pretty good
Even the armor it's all busted for each tier of progression mainly to give players incentive to grind the event
It's not annoying, it is just too difficult to be worth it. The actual event is pretty fun.
Not busted at all, just that it’s way faster to do the pillars and get those weapons instead, old ones army weapons get outclassed way too fast for the grind required imo. I would get a ballista though it’s really good for farming but the rest isn’t really worth it
Am I the only one that thinks the old ones army tier 3 is a boring breeze? Maybe its cause I play summoner but half the event for me is just afking by the crystal while everything dies to sentries and summons. Mage and ogre are glorified punching bags at that point too, it's really only Betsy that poses any threat in the event and she's basically just a watered down duke fishron. The crystal also has so much hp that I've never seen it even come close to dying.

Obtainability: Requires the True Nights Edge, True Excalibur and 1 broken hero sword
-Easier to get as by the time you can get it, you probably have the weapons and materials needed, the only problem you may have is obtaining a broken hero said which can be obtained through solar eclipses by a mothron which can be spawned via a solar tablet
The Flying Dragon
-More Damage(2x)
-Less Crowd Control(Projectile covers less space)
-Projectiles can pass through objects
-Less range(Projectiles have limited range and don't have much of a lasting effect)
-Harder to hit Projectile
Obtainability: Requires Defeating the old one's army after golem
-Harder to obtain, defeating the old one's army is slightly difficult and has a rare drop chance
I have legitimately no idea what people mean when they say Old Ones Army is difficult. Grab a piercing weapon, put down the best available Ballista sentry, pull up your big boy pants, and chug down some potions.
Just build a 5 blocks wide and 8 blocks high hoik wall on both side and you're good
Was playing terraria with my wife and she actually really loved the old ones army, finding it a nice change of pace from the rest of the game. She was playing summer and i am melee so this weapon was a no brainer for me. Helps to get double the boss bags to though

If the Old One's Army is too difficult, you could build something like the contraption that Gromek999 and his friends built in their 3rd Terraria series. It uses Boulder statues to deal with all ground enemies.

It's also more accessible than the Terra Sword since you don't have to work your butt off trying to get two Broken Hero Sword(s).
It took me 4 hours just to beat the Solar Pillar alone without the Flying Dragon, But it took 1 hour to beat when I used the Flying Dragon. It's overkill.
This Terraria weapon is such a baddie it can easily defeat dad's belt and mom's flip flop

Tbh all of betsy's drops are crazy. Best pre moonlord wings and crazy dps weapons.
One of the rare melee weapons i wanted to get and use but sadly never got one how many times i beat Betsy, great job on covering this great sword as always!
I'm glad someone else has realized how good this thing is! I used it on my most recent melee playthrough, and it blew me away with how good it was. Nobody else I talked to believed me about it.
I actually used this weapon against Lunatic cultist, the pillars and Moon lord
Fighting Betsy is very easy with archer gear that also makes mobs ignore you. Betsy will go after the crystal instead of you. Easy.
its so hard to get pre moon lord but i grinded my ass off doing the old ones army solo and killed betsy literally right before she disappeared after the crystal was destroyer. it was the greatest feeling ive ever had in terraria and i was rewarded handsomely with one of my favorite swords
I get this one every playthrough. It's not just great for combat; it's basically the ultimate reconnaissance tool, going through walls and lighting up everything along the way. If I haven't found my Enchanted Sword shrine already, this thing is how I find it.
its good for combat for keyboard and mouse players that can aim but on console it is just an inaccurrate terrablade
Im so mad i forgot about this, I finished my master mode melee playthrough primarily using the terrablade, this would of been a direct upgrade
With enough melee speed you can effectively reveal previously darked out spots on the map to find structures like in the desert biome to obtain more bast statues, finding sword shrines, the aether, any naturally spawning caves to make farms efficient, or anything else.
This sword is my personal favourite and it's arguably one of the most underrated melee weapons in the game ever since the buff
Most of the old ones Army weapons are an absolute menace in the endgame, which is why you should definitely try out the Aerial Bane

Tho we all know base new Terrablade does not have as high dps compared to old terrablade if its not an Melee speed build as its quite busted with that build to the point they had to nerf terreblades atk sps scaling. And that fact it has faster and bigger projectile makes it so much mo accurate compared to most melee weapons while still being less tedious to farm as you pretty much have both True Excalibur and true nights edge if your on a melee play through.

The design is unique, the attack is just like other old melee projectiles... Probably remake it with charge feature sword since its 'dragon' so yeah

I did a 1.4.4 melee playthrough and I did the OOA seeing if I could get this weapon and when I got it I was blown away by the damage, using this with Daybreaker I dealt a ridiculous amount of damage to the Moon Lord, the only issue was to aim but aside from that, the weapon is so good
obviously these aren't the same level of difficulty to obtain but i've always viewed the flying dragon like fishron drops or the terraprisma. if you have the skill to obtain it as soon as possible it's so insanely op
As someone who just finished a master mode melee only play through and went out of my way to obtain both the terra blade and flying dragon as early as possible I can say that while the flying dragon looks better then the terra blade on paper in a real play through the terra blade ends up being better in almost every scenario since it benefits from melee speed much more then the flying dragon as a result of this the terra blade actually surpasses the flying dragon in projectile only dps all while being easily to aim and hit with due to its larger faster projectile. Not to say that the flying dragon is outclassed since it still can hit through walls making a better choice for cheesing the pillars and fighting in the dungeon and caverns however it is worse on events and bosses meaning that for most people it is not worth getting.
I'd say the Terrablade still has some advantages over Flying Dragon, namely the wider projectiles as well as quicker attack speed make it much easier to hit any enemy with it, meaning you need to aim a lot less. That makes it easier to use, better for hitting off screen enemies you can't see, as well as more appropriate for panic moments when you don't have enough reasoning to aim carefully (Terraria makes me panic more than almost any other game for some reason, even including Hollow Knight, Sekiro, Kingdom Hearts and the such, never knew why). It also hits a bigger number of enemies with each hit, so it can be better for certain events with weaker mobs that don't require the Flying Dragon's damage.
That said, Flying Dragon is definitely stronger and an awesome weapon as well, even if it's a hastle to get. The reason it isn't used much is probably that Zenith is unironically easier to get, as usually Moonlord is easier than Betsy (specially with how vulnerable he is to the Terrablade, as it frequently hits two of his parts simultaniously due to the very wide projectiles, making it particularly great against him even when compared to higher dps weapons like Influx Weaver and Daybreak)
When relogic showed that pic with the new terrablade projectile it reminded me of the flying dragon i even commented on chippys video showing it about how it might function and i came very close to getting it right
It should be great for a post golem item. The terra blade can be obtained before golem but after plantera if you enter on your way to golem and pick up the solar eclipse summoning item and exit the jungle temple and summon the solar eclipse. Defeat as many mothrons as you can to get broken hero swords and then you can get terra blade before fighting the golem.
Honestly I’ve used this weapon a lot more than many swords in the game,and I’d just like to say it is criminally underrated
what i love about this sword is that it actually has an edge over the solar eruption's range, making it useful until zenith is obtained
yeah the flying dragon to me is my favourite wave farming weapon since the horseman blade nerf and is basically a perfect upgrade to the deathsical in terms of progression, I usually go to old ones army after killing duke because the razorblade typhoon and flareon are great respective weapons for killing Betsy and keeping distance from it's surprisingly high dmg and range

I'd seen this on the wiki and I had known it functioned quite similarly to the terrablade, but I wassurprised when I saw its damage, and I knew that it would surpass the terrablade by a mile if I got it
Who knew old ones army event would have some of the coolest weapons in the game along with armor

i recently used this weapon in a melee master mode playthrough and i have to say: while the high damage is very nice, the terrablade on a melee speed build with shinobi armour is just much easier to use and killed things quicker overall. but maybe my aim is just bad
We LOVE good Flying Dragon representation here. This weapon carried both my first tries at classic and expert attempts with excellence. I love it so much
Thank you for making this video, the Old One's Army is my favourite event in the game and it's so underrated. It's not actually as hard as people think, they just don't know how to play it properly, you're not meant to use your standard gear that you use for everything else, the sentries are there along with the armour, use them. It might be a bit of a grind, but if you save enough medals from previous tiers to buy the next set of armour and upgraded sentry then it's actually pretty easy, and the rewards (especially in stage 3) are so worth it.
The Tome of Infinite Wisdom is probably the best weapon to use for the Destroyer after the Daedalus x holy arrow nerf, and all the Betsy weapons are absolutely incredible, if you combine Betsy's Wrath and the Golden Shower then you can completely negate the Moon Lord's defence (except the core, but it leaves it with only 10, equal to King Slime), and the Aerial Bane is pretty much made for bosses since almost all of them fly, the Flying Dragon is obviously outstanding, and the Sky Dragon's Fury is amazing for Duke Fishron, creating a wall with the ranged attack that blocks all the bubbles and sharkrons from hitting you
I think the only "true" fallback of this weapon (apart from the projectile range which is not really a problem) is the projectile size. Yeah, it hits hard but all those damage is going to waste if you can't even hit the enemy. This is really unfortunate for fast moving enemies and the added difficulty of my bad aim this weapon starts to fall apart.
When me and my sister played terraria in our journey world this weapon was our main sword type weapon, however I love magic weapons more, also I love how it let's you see more on your map because of the light producing and fazing projectiles

In tl pro, a mobile thing for terraria, you can disable item cooldown, and it's really fun to use, to be honest, especially for thrown items, or even better, the starwrath

I got this weapon during my first playthrough after 1.4.1 and it was a GIANT surprise. I used it against moon lord to farm for the Zenith. Once I finally crafted it, it felt a bit... weak? Yes, it can reach the entire screen and is INSANE, but the Flying Dragon is so powerful that I thought the Zenith would be more...
I think the Aerial Bane is super underrated. I remember killing the moon lord with it faster than I could with the Phantasm

the betsy's wrath is another great old ones army weapon, even when its damage is outclassed by other weapons you should still keep it just because it drains armor by 40.
I got the flairon and after that did the old ones army and got this sword now i am not sure what weapon to use because both weapons are realy good

One major thing to consider when comparing the flying dragon to the terra blade: the flying dragon's projectile does NOT scale with attack speed, while the terra blade's projectile does. If using an attack speed based melee build, the terra blade can actually be better.
Yeah, like with beetle scale mail. 45% more attack speed from the beetles alone means 45% more DPS when using just the projectile.
But with the Beetle shell, this weapon is likely better due to the higher base damage
So basically, this weapon is for tanky builds while the Terra blade is for attack builds?
@watermelongaming3698 Arguably, he's exaggerating, Terrablade isn't really gonna be better, you're better off just going for Lucky instead of Violent anyway at that stage.

I actually use this in a multi player master mode server after everybody killed the dragon and I was obsessed with using it. I loved it so much.
The old ones army isn’t hard, if you use the sentries that are a part of the event you can do it very easily. Because the etherian mana let’s you place multiple of those sentries
i've met a lot of people who say its too hard but never use the sentries.
sentries + hoiks literally take out every single grounded enemy without you having to do anything
So summoner is the only class that exists? Ok

When I first got this weapon, the best and only way I could describe it was a better Terrablade. It does everything the Terrablade does-minus the speed of the energy beams-but better. It even goes through blocks. I wouldn't have beaten my first melee playthrough without the thing.
I feel as is, the terra blade should be a pre-planterra weapon, as it isn't well suited currently for the competition it is against.
It's a great weapon that lasts well into pillars. Its way to strong for pre plantera.

You should probably use both, one is post plantera, the other is post Golem, and Terra Blade will help a ton with OOA tier 3

Maybe im just some secret legend but i've been playing on expert and later on master mode only and genuinely never had a problem with Old one's army unless I try and do them as quick as possible. Even after the first 'powerspike' after 1 mech boss you can easily finish it with as much as a clinger staff and lightning aura rods

I got this AFTER building my main event/boss arena, and almost IMMEDIATELY it replaced the Death Sickle. It's been a godsend for farming certain events for gold.

Very underlooked thing I dont like about the Flying Dragon is the small projectile compared to the Terra Blade. Its really a damage vs consistency thing but generally I really like having both in my hotbar

when i got flying dragon i did not expect anything from it until it checked its stats , yo i am now grinding for zenith and havent picked terrablade

This thing is legitimately better than the Zenith for some things. The zenith can only go as far as your screen goes, and usually you have to put your mouse directly over an enemy to hit them with it since the pattern of the attack has a big open spot in front of the player when holding the mouse far enough away. Can even more efficiently map out the ground than the zenith due to reaching farther.
yeah but I found the terra blade is better and more consistent dps because of its rework, being attack speed affects it alot, plus its easier to hit your targets with it, your choice
Used this weapon on my most recent playthrough. Was amazing and a perfect side weapon for Summoner, the class I was using.

i remember i used this thing to kill the moonlord in my first playthrough. i used a glass canon build, giving up everything for damage, and i got over 500 base damage lol. i remember getting one shot by myself when trying to kill the solar pillar. great weapon tho

luckily, you can set up a modified hoik in the invasion arena that gets past the whole 'needs to be flat ground' thing. It absolutely trivialises the earlier waves, making flying enemies the only ones that can get to the crystal

Funny thing is, last time I used this weapon was when old ones army came out, and back then it was the biggest piece of sh*t you could get from the event, basically performing under the post-mech weapons from the very same event! I guess doubling its damage, decreasing its use time, and giving the weapon no penalty when using it through the walls made it into the fourth best sword in the game.

I just have around 15 ballista sentries in wave 7 and it's relatively easy. Without any potions. Took me a lot of times because previously I didn't use sentries plus didn't reforge my Terra Blade and my accessories.
That weapon played a huge role in my Moonlord Expert win
aerial bane is my favourite endgame range weapon. it’s absolutely busted, I think it is one of the best weapons in the game, the betsy weapons are ridiculous. also the betsy wings are my favourite cosmetic. i do old ones army in pretty much every playthrough.

I’ve loved this weapon for ages
Influx waver for wave 1-6, north pole or scourge of the corruptor for betsy and then use tavern keeper armor to have sentries nearly take care of every non boss enemy without help. With full prep in accessories and reforges and such even fortheworthy master mode is manageable as long as you can dodge betsy

Useful thing that wasn’t mentioned: the Selenians at the solar pillar CAN reflect the projectiles and can be very dangerous if so :)

Using rainbow gun, nimbus rod, magnet sphere, and clinger staff can make this event free. Also you can spawn in non old ones sentries like frost hydra without it costing green mana stuff.
If you have at least 2 people and good strategies you can get this immediately after Golem, and if you do it is an absolute beast.
