VW Tiguan R: The SUV that thinks it's a hot hatch

- Rebecca Jackson reviews the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R, a family friendly SUV with the power of, well, a Golf R. While it might not be as much fun to drive as an ordinary hot hatch, and it isn’t as comfortable as an ordinary SUV, the Tiguan still delivers as an overall package. Would it be your choice of fast SUV?

Pros
Very practical, with lots of space for people and luggage
Good to drive
More affordable than premium rivals from Audi and BMW
Cons
A Skoda Kodiaq is cheaper
Mixed reliability record
New car warranty is short compared with those offered by Hyundai and Kia

Very nice; I love your car reviews.
I can't believe a variable boot floor isn't included at that price as standard. I can't stop thinking about it >_
It's a privilege buyers pay extra for. That's how certain brands sell extras to their customers.
nor electric seats as std, typical VW.
They're the opposite of generous when it comes to their customers.
Watching from Ireland
Yep I can’t wait… i do wish we had the option for those seats here in Aus, we only get the leather option which is basically the same seats in my current R-Line Tiguan
Surely you get an R model cos you're interested in and prioritize power, dynamics, handling prowess? do a twin test with the 330i touring, please?
Rebecca Jackson is always lovely.
But her voice will drive you to drink
Just ordered one
I can't help but really like the look of Tiguan R, I also prefer the infotainment system in this than newer VW products, but 50K ? I just don't know, especially with VW cutting corners in quality now to save some pennies.
The GLA35 and X2 M35i are also competitors I think..
Love our one, no where near 50K and we added extras.
Its a step up from the standard Tiguan, so I think its a great vehicle.
I like that the boot ist not flat so there is more space ++neue suv are all with flat boot und small space.
Well done.
What i can't understand about VW is when you add the options the price becomes insane.
Too expensive. I've had 3 VW's not any more.. they have upped the prices too much.
2:28 I thought you'd never ask 😍
Tig R . The answer to the question that no one asked .
Surely the question asked is “do you feel like you need an SUV to make you feel superior to others & better about your lack of driving ability…and, are you also gullible and frivolous with your money?”
50k for that no way seat tarraco 2.0litre tsi for less than 40k and more kit and 7 seats ,you really pay for the VW badge .by the way the windows on the Tarraco have VW etching on the glass and are made side by side as the tuguan allspace .I think the 10,000 is better in my bank account than Volkswagens
50k price tag!! The golf R is much more desirable!!!
The tiguan is heavy, but shares the same engine as the golf R.
Golf is too small imo, Tiguan is better
50K ! You cannot be serious ?
Did you just say "the setting on 21 inch eels" ?
Surely the true competitors for this car are the Audi SQ5, BMW X3 40i or the Mercedes GLC43? All are more expensive but perceivably more premium and with noticeably more power. Am I sensing a deliberate mismatch of competitors in this video to make the Tiguan R seem a better proposition? 🤔
The x3m40i is double the price in Australia!
Kona N would also be something someone would cross-shop.
The Audi SQ5 seems like a more obvious comparison?
It needs leather interior as standard and 40 k would have been a better starting price the Cupra ateca is the better option for me.
For 50k you could have a 3 litre X3 or Q5 which are both more luxurious and much more desirable
Not as fun
X3 made in America and Q5 made in Mexico… both rubbish build quality and full of quality issues, neither are as good as Tiguan R which is made in Germany!
BMW x3 or q5....😂😂😂 really? Both are slow pigs and more expensive, with less standard equipment!
Surely you’d buy a Golf R estate instead of this.
nice
A wolf in a not so sheep's clothing. Thanks for the review!
I'm struggling with the £50k price tag I mean it's still a Tiguan at the end of the day hardly desirable, could think of so many many cars I would rather spend 50k on.
An Audi RS Q3 springs to mind instead of this thing.
@@foresterboy2011 I wasn't even thinking along the lines of a crossover/suvs, they don't do anything for me at all.
@@foresterboy2011 check prices of RSQ3.....
I love how everyone thinks all these cars are in the same price point, Audi, Porsche etc. let alone if you can get one. The wait in Australia for an rsq3 is over 12 months. check your facts and compare apples with apples.
@@davida7025 Yeah they are speaking without the knowledge...a Tiguan R is almost as fast of an RSQ3 (0-60 is very close) and it possibly drives better with its new rear differential and the DSG gearbox (RSQ3 gearbox sucks). Interior is not as refined as the RSQ3 and it doesn't have the Audi badge but comparing the two the price point of the Tiguan R, even if it's hard to swallow, it's not that much overpriced.
The Cupra Formentor is a direct competitor and cheaper. I wouldn't call this a review; try Autogefuel for those. This is more like an overview with an lightly stated opinion at the end.
Harsh, very, that said your comment is correct.
Recently spent 44k on a SQ5 petrol, however not sure how or why this Tiguan is faster..
You've got a bargain if that's SQ5, but your car should be a LOT faster than the Tiguan R. SQ5 is V6 and here in Australia it is 70k+ pounds or aud$125k+ (drive-away)
You lost me at £50k.
Golf r is 40k new so what price would you expect it to be?
Golf R estate all day long
Great review but finding it hard to like this car
Better off buying the sel and getting a tune
They should have done a Passat Estate R instead of the Arteon R
50K really, no not for us.
No rivals?…..what about the Audi RSQ3?
Much more expensive
how many channels does Rebecca need to jump lol
Nope 👎, too much 💷 not enough 🚙
And the lack of proper electric seats which where available in the mk6 golf gti but done away with since then leans to the theory of profit before product and a argument in support of buy something else 🤷🏻♂️
Soulless and bland. Not to mention £50k. What goes through their minds when they set the prices for these. Absolute joke.
Too expensive for lots of plastic
Too many shenanigans with VW products- Dieselgate, Adblue, poor reliability- AVOID!!
I ve had a Tiguan for 5 year and Done almost 100 000 km. Not a single issue, knowing that I made it jump in the air over a speed bump I didn't see once and I went through a lot of bad roads.
Very comfortable and silent car in the inside, not to mention more spacious than a q5, x3 ou glc and has more boot space.
Das Auto
"R" for Rebecka - Too costly and the most impressive feature I'd say is the colour scheme with its adaptive colour shift. No thanks.
Compared to what?
I am in love ...Lord help me... I gotta have this baby... I am eagerly waiting here in South Africa :)
Hello , after ten years, more wrinkles but still yummy to watch.
God is this a boooring car! I would not even rent this.
That automatic gearbox is a big no no for me
