  • Review #47 and part 7 of my Bakers Dozen series sees a little change of plan. There are those out there who knew which whiskies I'd be reviewing in this series and Loch Lomond 12yr wasn't one of them.
    Apologies if you were expecting Highland Park 12 to be reviewed in this episode. That will come later.
    Speaking of coming later...as a little add on to the recorded review...I do mention in this recording that there is peated barley used in this whisky. I struggled to find much influence from it but, once the review was finished, I took some further time with my dram and although I had to wait long into the finish to really find it...the peat is definately there. It actually becomes quite prominent. Just thought I'd add that in! Anyway.....
    Enjoy.

    Thanks for the review! With The Open in Portrush last year we had some good coverage in Northern Ireland in Winemark and Russells Cellars. I normally use Fairleys in Coleraine when I'm back home, they've had a few Loch Lomonds in around the time of the golf, not sure about now.
    At Loch Lomond we focus more on creating flavour through how we distil and use different shapes of pot stills, ways of operating the stills and vary the peat levels in the malted barley. This gives us 8 styles of new make spirit that are matured individually then combined in a specific way for each expression when mature. For the Loch Lomond 12 we use 4 spirit styles, one of which is peated. Its the smallest component so should just be enough to come through on the finish. By using the different spirit styles it helps with the complexity that you were picking up as the bottle had a chance to open up.
    We bottle at 46% NCF and we do use some caramel. We use all American Oak for maturation and more refill with only a small portion of first fill. This gives a low wood character and keeps the focus on the distillery character. It does mean a lighter natural colour.
    If I can help with background on any of our whiskies please let me know, a DM on Twitter @LLBlender is the best way of getting in touch.

      Cheers Michael. Very kind of you to get in touch and thank you for all the added info. I'll keep your contact in mind, if and when I cover more Loch Lomond whiskys.
      I genuinely do like what youse are doing with this expression. And as someone else said...Loch Lomond has come a long way in the last 20 years, thanks in no small part to your influence.
      Yeah had the chance to try the Open special along with a couple of other Loch Lomonds (can't remember which) last year and found them enjoyable. It was great for the distillery and great for Northern Ireland to support such an amazing event.
      Thanks again and best wishes for the future.

    Just "stumbled upon" this review from your archive, Jim, and was quite curious about it, as I just recently opened this bottle, in order to nose and taste it for the OSWA voting in the Best Value Whisky category.
    I find it quite interesting that this one (also) develops nicely in the bottle with some oxidation, just like the GS 15 yo as we agreed upon a few weeks back. I'm barely below the shoulders in my LL 12 yo bottle, but maybe I should pour a few more drams from it and then put it "to rest" back in the cabinet for quite a while, and then see what happens maybe a year from now. From this review, it sounds like the right thing to try.
    I did like the neck pour and the second dram... I found it to be a nice whisky, matching my expectations and the price level for the bottle.
    I didn't, however, end up voting for it this year (I only vote for one candidate in each category, unless I'm split 50/50 between two candidates), but if it will indeed develop into something better, it's just to bad that I didn't open the bottle earlier to let it develop and "hit on all cylinders"... my bad, I guess.
    Cheers again buddy... sorry to bother you with my comments on such old reviews 😉🥃

    Unlike Mr. Ralfy, I really like Loch Lomond 12 and think it's a super value. It can be a bit rough & tumble, but I like that quality, it's complex and a bit olde timey, and I like it.

    It ain't a Higland Park 12, but it is a Highland and the distillery is situated in a park-like environment, so .... (with some goodwill :-))
    Thanks for the review of this fine dram, Jim.

    I really like the relaxed style of your reviews and the idea to try an alternative whisky in comparison. Thanks for your work and passion.
    (If I remember correctly, Ralfy called that of an earlier version smelling „like something mechanically gone wrong“ - but he liked and rated it quite high

    Good review.... I really found a gem here. It’s well made, fruity, sweet, a bit Smokey, a fabulous go to dram. Nobody hasn’t enjoyed this, it’s to me like an old fashioned dram,, industrial, cause you can taste the charred wood ,you know your having a good honest dram, similar to Deanston in honesty. The fruity, sweetness yet a bit of chilli, is a winner for me. Slainte mhath novice....🥃🥃🥃

      Aye I would agree with you Alan but I try to compare with something cheap(er) and readily available which (as you and I know) KK12 currently isn't.

    indeed, this is better than HP 12. 10 years ago, i would probably had said something differen (as both my taste and HP 12 has evolved, and let's just be honest: HP 12 is still a decent whisky, but it's a prime example of a whisky that really used to be better a decade ago). So today, I'd take this any day over HP 12. I'm sure Alan will appreciate this little 'wink wink nudge nudge' you pulled

    • @WhiskeyNovice
      @WhiskeyNovice  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hope so Menno cheers. Yeah HP 12, for me anyway, is a starting point now. Good place to kick off from but it lacks a bit of oomf. I find the Loch Lomond is one that just keeps getting better.

    This sounds like a very complex 12yo and after reading Michael Henry's comments below I can see why. I'll buy it immediately if I ever see it.

    I Am in my second bottle at the moment. I like this one better than the Black Label 12 years old. The Loch Lomond is more smooth, have 46% and it taste better, Its a little bit sweet, however the smoothness make a great drink experience for the price.

    The livestream Roy had with the gentleman who puts this together was eye opening. With the different types of stills, barley and casks they use this is a Frankenstein of a Whisky (in a good way 😂). So much going on in this bottle especially for the price. Cheers Jim

    Another fine review sir, enjoyed the LL 12yo along with their grain offering. Loving the comparison with Naked Grouse but find them worlds apart ... NG is also a firm fave for an easy drinking blended malt ... and great value too. Paid £29 for our LL 12 too, and £19 for the NG .. bargain!

    I haven't reviewed this Loch Lomond 12 yo on my youtube channel either, but on my website...based on a sample. A complex & singular whisky for sure, not for everyone...I prefered the "Open Club" edition at 46 % & the Inchmurrin Madeira cask finish I shoud review on video soon...I like the Naked Grouse but kinda regret the previous blended whisky version of it....I don't think they match either as you say. In France 45/50 € for this LL 12 I'm not going for it. Cheers it was interesting to have your take on this one, as always very detailed notes ! 👍

    This is a good 12 yo, but I sure can't get it for those prices in the US. Hopefully, the single malt tariffs will go away soon. But, there are a lot of good 12's in your baker's dozen. Until the tariff goes, it is virtually impossible to buy any single malt that is older for under $100. Now, there is an idea for your next series-- older blended malts. That is becoming an increasing interest for me as a balance of cost and quality.

    • @WhiskeyNovice
      @WhiskeyNovice  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Bud. Yeah it's something I want to look into. Even 14, 15 and 16 yr olds. I have a few of those (what I would consider) strange ages.
      The prices of these and even some of the 12s in this series vary a lot. It will be a series at some point my friend.

      @@hulkslayer626 yes this one is a good value in the US but you got a great deal! I've seen it around $35 online, but then you have shipping costs. I hope you enjoy it-- I thought it was a great value myself. There are many 12 yo that are still affordable, but the 16-18 year olds and older are much more.

      There is Alan. Went out to my Patrons mate. Wasn't done as a publicity stunt or anything, just wanted to record a bit of music for them and I didn't (at that point) have an intro for this review so it was a sort of "kill two birds with one stone" thing.
