Great demo. Thornbucker pickups are wound more to vintage specs for a brighter tone - per Pete Thorn. The Pete Thorn Signature guitar is lighter, less mass, than the Les Paul. So naturally the bridge pickup will not be as thick and punchy as the Les Paul. I prefer the more open and clear fidelity tone of the Thorn guitar. More versatile IMO. And if you wanted to thicken the bridge humbucker tone (more Les Paul like), just add a fuzz, overdrive, or distortion pedal.
I have the gold top version. The look and feel are phenomenal, as is the tuning stability and playability. I'm used to hotter pickups so there was an adjustment period when playing this one, but the more I play it, the more I understand what Pete was going for. I have found the sustain to be incredible, with such great dynamic range and harmonics. Fantastic instrument for sure!
Pete's pickups are some of my favorite PAF's ever. Perfect for everything I can throw at them. I put them in a nice resonant PRS SE Custom 24, it really loves the key of A, and holy shit did that do a thing! Pete, you got some ears my man.
I've noticed since you bought that Kemper your matchless sits in the corner! :P. What I love about the Kemper is I can turn it on and have instant inspiration without all the fuss. AND it sounds the same everyday, unlike a tube amp.

I agree on everything… I have one and the same color for a few years now, and it plays absolutely amazing. If you can only bring one guitar, then this is the one to bring. Perhaps the guitar I play the most… and I have a few pretty high-end ones…
I have one of these on order (over a year from the time of ordering). I literally cannot wait! The Thornbucker pickups are incredible; I have some installed in a PRS I'm selling in order to fund this PT signature. I'm surprised anyone would ever want to part with this guitar, but at least you got another. :)
I switched to playing one of these (same color even) as my main live guitar about a year ago or so... extremely versatile and well built. I feel I can get pretty much all tones I need from it. Every now and again I do miss a real middle single coil PU, but that's about it..
Paul, I have those Wilkinson locking saddles on my vintage style Strat bridge. Bought them when the first became available to buy and they've been great. Nice solid tuning stability with the vintage style machine heads. Only thing is they don't do then in the vintage saddle widths so you have a small gap between each one
it would be nice if you can compare the suhr with the fender, basically the same humbucker, the same scale lenght..the differences are the woods and the bridge (but both have a steel blocks) that's very interesting!!
I would definitely want to get a Suhr Pete thorn signature in the future the neck shape and measurement is a perfect guitar and neck for small hand guitarist

My Strat Ultra has had a refret with stainless steel, I have the magic Vega-Trem, and I have a set of Thornbuckers ready to go in as soon as a new pickguard arrives. When it's done, it won't be far removed from Pete's Suhr. That's what I'll tell myself anyway...

i Just installed jumbo stainless steel frets to one of my strat, finally. Now i expect i don't go through frets so easily, all my guitars needs new frets, now i have to do same to other guitars. But yes, stainless steel frets are great.

hi which bridge is on this guitar and where can you buy it - i recently discovered Vegatrem bridges and they are fantastic but this one may do the trick as I don't abuse the bridge to heavily and is hopefulle not as pricy as the Vegatrem
Neck pickup is lower output than custombucker neck, but the bridge is quite a bit hotter. Probably more relevant to the difference in sound is the scale length. No doubt the PT sig is a fine guitar, I thought it sounded particularly good in that bit starting about 12 minutes in. I have never quite figured out middle gain sounds like that. FWIW I agree with your comments that Suhr does a good job of disguising that the guitar is a signature model. I have Mateus Asato's and really unless you know it's just a pink Classic S.
Hi! I recently got Pete Thorn's Suhr Signature Series, I'm having a hard time changing the strings. Just wanna ask if you have any tutorial on how to do it properly, the locking tuners and saddle are fairly new to me.
That Suhr is very fine! Funny thing about dings... I bought a dinged Squier Telecaster CV 70's Deluxe, after seeing the ding. A chip the size of a square centimetre was off at the lower back corner. I just put a piece of silver tape over it haha! So I was kind of proud that I wasn't vain, but I was looking at my Shijie STE today that I bought for around €800, and I saw something that looked like a tiny tiny ding and I spontaneously said "shit!"... And then I thought about that for a moment. What if I had a similar Suhr guitar, a PRS or some Fender or Gibson custom shop? It's bound to get a ding sooner or later. So I decided to not obsess about it. I'm not going to be careless, but if I relic a guitar that I own and that I will never get rid of, it's fine. Last but not least, I have to compliment Paul on those beautiful guitar tones!
I’m exactly the same - I recently sold my 2008 USA Strat for many reasons, one being that I had had it from new and it was still immaculate and I was genuinely not comfortable taking it out and about - it’s ridiculous really. I then bought a Fender Acoustasonic and have a similar feeling 😂 I love my Mexican and Jet strats for the very reason that I’m not as precious about them so I actually enjoy them more - there isn’t the same distraction when I’m using them live. We are funny creatures really.
How do you find the Shijie? I’ve been eyeing one since Daryl Braun (I think that’s his name) pulled one apart on his TH-cam channel and it looked glorious. I’m edging towards a PRS SE Silver Sky because of the neck and pickups, played one last week and it felt and sounded incredible, but just can’t stomach the colours.
@@slawsonscot I love my Shijie. It's a bit heavier than I expected, and its neck also feels chunkier than on a Squier, but man does it feel good! I have a pearl green one, it looks great! It's a bit of gamble because you can't try one before you buy, but I was lucky that the guitar fits me well. My guess is that the guitar won't feel terrible in your hands regardless, as long as you're not very picky about that. The specs on it are amazing, great shielding, great trem block, I have no complaints about the tuning machines either. I guess that the pickups could be livelier, I found that a slight push on the EQ pedal at 3.2 and 6.4 kHz makes them really shine. I'm very happy about mine, so I would recommend them. They put a lot of hand work on them, the fretwork is also impeccable. Oh, it's classically wired, so no tone on the bridge pickup, but I soldered on a small cable and that's solved. So if you're comfortable to risk it a bit and buy a guitar you haven't felt in your hands, go for it!

I love the Vegatrem on 2 of my Strats as well but they are very expensive (worth every penny because you don't have the problems of a Floyd Rose tuning them and after downtuning and String change) I''d liketo know the price of this Wilkinson I couldn't find the reference to order it on line and if you can put it on a 6 screw and 2screw tremm - if anybody knows it would be great - sorry for my english - not my first language
Thanks for posting. Great review & demo. I have been considering this guitar. However, I prefer the fatter sound of LPs / HBs. Not sure yet, but am beginning to think that this Suhr is not for me.

We all must be careful to remember and remind each other that GAS has no real cure, you can medicate to mask the symptoms or even try rehab,but in the end we all will relapse, stay supportive of one another.
Hey Paul, check out Pete Thorn new signature HSS guitar it has a Thornbucker II+ pickup that runs hotter than the original Thornbucker. It is a fire breathing guitar with a thicker neck and ebony feet board like a Jackson .
@@TheStudioRats yes, very nice! I think for me I am going to be headed for a HSS guitar and may sell the PT signature. I got it as a backup to my PRS DGT. Yet I like using unconventional gear for my blues playing, so I am headed for a shredder guitar that has a HSS pickup config. I am looking at a Luke III or Jackson Soloist SL1. This PT Sig is a lovely guitar just need to find balance with your gear as it is a very brite guitar with loads of clarity . Which many deem "Hi Fi " or " Sterile". It is just a balancing act, not all gear will jive with it just like other guitars pickup configs will grant different playability, especially through different amps . try the guitar with darker amps or lower mid ranged amps . I have an AN Bomshell Overdrive and when I play the PT Thorn Signature into it the amp turns into a zombie, it just sounds lifeless, no matter what pickup selection on the guitar. Yet once I plug my PRS DGT into it the amp immediately becomes alive, sounds warm and rich. When I use my PT into say a PRS HX/DA 1986 bassman circuit that naturally has lower mids and a lot of bass the guitar shines, cuts through like a knife. The key is to understand, which I know you know , this guitar has more upper mids and is very brite, not a bad thing just different and will need to be used for different applications and is not the one all be all, it has other guitars impressions within the guitar like the LP and a strat yet has its own unique voicing. If you are a purist then get a LP or strat, if you need a tool to cover a lot of ground that has similar sonics of a LP or strat yet with it's own unique voice with upper mids then get the PT. It has lovely strat and LP tones higher in the mid range which will cut nicely in a mix, especially in a live mix. Now one turn off for a lot of folks is the volume drop when switching to the single coil position, that is straight away up last position. To get around this I suggest using a clean boost pedal to adjust the volume difference. I use a Keeley Katana that lets me adjust the clean boost quickly and easily and wahalla we get a louder single coil that matches the humbuckers. ( Note Ernie Ball Music Man guitars such as the Luke III have fixed this problem, they have a preamp boost switch on the guitar. So it will give you that extra oomf while soloing when switching to the single coil) cheers mate, I will be watching to see how you get along with this for the second time.

There’s a few second hand Axefx on Reverb but they’re still typically a grand. Would you say the Axefx is way ahead of the Hx stomp and Katana for the gainy stuff. Like I say, appreciate response and and any further advise you can offer. Keep the videos coming pls.
Great review and a couple question. Why did you get rid of your previous PT Suhr? And why keep this one? Does this one feel better? What do you consider a good price as you said you paid a fair price? I think new they are £3.5k in a shop. However is £2k to £2.5k tops good for a secondhand one?
I’ve had two of these Pete Thorn guitars myself and one issue which bugs me is how uncontrollable the sympathetic ringing of the guitar is! It’s always present no matter how much I dampen the nut or springs in the rear cavity! - Have you also found this to be the case with yours? In between every note is a nasty ‘ping’ sound!

Would love to see this up against the.... Harley Benton 'version of this, 🤭 just for a laugh.. and see if you can upgrade it to get as close as to the original.. Purely for the sake of' can it be done'.. Just an idea Paul..
Pickups, tuners, bridge, everything can be upgraded pretty easily. The neck and the frets might be the biggest difference after the upgrade. It would be interesting to feel both guitars and play them before and after upgrade. I mean, if the sound is okay, the feel of the guitar is what I personally focus on.
Great idea. I think pickup change and nut on the Harley is enough to get it close enough But will all come down to feel and weight if the guitar on which is best for a person. They there is the investment value . Suhr will hold value but the Harley will also be cheap
I know Suhr’s have great reputations, but I just have never clicked with them. Every one I have tried just doesn’t seem to connect to my soul the same way Fender, PRS, and Gibson’s do. I get goosebumps when playing those other three, but the Suhr’s just never give me that kind of feeling.
Doesn't help they are insanely expensive for a strat ( easy to construct) guitar. Had a modern pro and it was good but too little guitar for the money. Their amps and reactive load are the best in the business tho.
I’ve felt that way for years about PRS and Suhr, I’d never found one that leaves me anything other than ‘cold’ when I play it. That was until last year when I picked up and played a Suhr Classic Strat HSS (limited edition Pauwlonia). I bought it there and then and still think it is an unbelievably great sounding and beautifully constructed guitar.
@@steviesynapse Nice! I also had a Suhr Classic Strat HSS (but not that limited edition one) and it just never connected with me. With PRS, I have a Modern Eagle and a McCarty S2, and both of them call to me. I can’t wait to get home from work every day and pick those up and play, even more so than my Gibson Les Paul or my Fender custom Strat and Tele. The two Suhrs I have owned never made me feel that way, so I ended up selling both of them. But maybe there’s one out there like yours that will change my mind someday. Thanks for the tip.
yea bad sign when you have to tune a shipped guitar... unless it is for studio only... that gig thing... fragile is not good for a perfect cookie cutter sound. have you looked in to schecter? yea korea made.... BUT... i have 2 of them here from sweet water... i did not have to touch the tunning as shipped to me! no kidding! but i did reset up the guitar with the strings i like and my action as fast and super low. yea the good ones are a bit over a grand unless you get a deal on them. the neck on the schecter is what got me into them... perfect! at least on the units i have here in the studio.

Take the locking bolts off and put them in the case. I don’t use them.

I really enjoy watching your TH-cam videos. I played a PRS Studio at a local music store and really liked the sound of the narrow field pickups. I’m also interested in the Pete Thorne signature guitar with the two humbuckers and Wilkinson bridge. How would you compare / contrast these guitars?

I love the Vegatrem on 2 of my Strats as well but they are very expensive (worth every penny because you don't have the problems of a Floyd Rose tuning them and after downtuning and String change) I''d liketo know the price of this Wilkinson I couldn't find the reference to order it on line and if you can put it on a 6 screw and 2screw tremm - if anybody knows it would be great - sorry for my english - not my first language
Those pickups are really versatile ,
the most beautiful and gorgeus suhr ! with humbuckers it has not the classic strat tone .it has a lespaul tone! ciao from italy.

Thanks for posting. Great review & demo. I have been considering this guitar. However, I prefer the fatter sound of LPs / HBs. Not sure yet, but am beginning to think that this Suhr is not for me.
Have you ever compared the PT w DGT side by side? Seem similar In versatility and sound
They are similar, the PT has brighter pickups. Both are great guitars.

Hey Paul, check out Pete Thorn new signature HSS guitar it has a Thornbucker II+ pickup that runs hotter than the original Thornbucker. It is a fire breathing guitar with a thicker neck and ebony feet board like a Jackson .

@@TheStudioRats yes, very nice! I think for me I am going to be headed for a HSS guitar and may sell the PT signature. I got it as a backup to my PRS DGT. Yet I like using unconventional gear for my blues playing, so I am headed for a shredder guitar that has a HSS pickup config. I am looking at a Luke III or Jackson Soloist SL1. This PT Sig is a lovely guitar just need to find balance with your gear as it is a very brite guitar with loads of clarity . Which many deem "Hi Fi " or " Sterile". It is just a balancing act, not all gear will jive with it just like other guitars pickup configs will grant different playability, especially through different amps . try the guitar with darker amps or lower mid ranged amps . I have an AN Bomshell Overdrive and when I play the PT Thorn Signature into it the amp turns into a zombie, it just sounds lifeless, no matter what pickup selection on the guitar. Yet once I plug my PRS DGT into it the amp immediately becomes alive, sounds warm and rich. When I use my PT into say a PRS HX/DA 1986 bassman circuit that naturally has lower mids and a lot of bass the guitar shines, cuts through like a knife. The key is to understand, which I know you know , this guitar has more upper mids and is very brite, not a bad thing just different and will need to be used for different applications and is not the one all be all, it has other guitars impressions within the guitar like the LP and a strat yet has its own unique voicing. If you are a purist then get a LP or strat, if you need a tool to cover a lot of ground that has similar sonics of a LP or strat yet with it's own unique voice with upper mids then get the PT. It has lovely strat and LP tones higher in the mid range which will cut nicely in a mix, especially in a live mix. Now one turn off for a lot of folks is the volume drop when switching to the single coil position, that is straight away up last position. To get around this I suggest using a clean boost pedal to adjust the volume difference. I use a Keeley Katana that lets me adjust the clean boost quickly and easily and wahalla we get a louder single coil that matches the humbuckers. ( Note Ernie Ball Music Man guitars such as the Luke III have fixed this problem, they have a preamp boost switch on the guitar. So it will give you that extra oomf while soloing when switching to the single coil) cheers mate, I will be watching to see how you get along with this for the second time.

@@TheStudioRats Thanksfor reply Paul. I have the Iridium for home recording, but I can’t seem to get the singing lead tones you’re getting. There’s a few second hand Axefx on Reverb but they’re still typically a grand. Would you say the Axefx is way ahead of the Hx stomp and Katana for the gainy stuff. Like I say, appreciate response and and any further advise you can offer. Keep the videos coming pls.

Why did you get rid of your previous PT Suhr? And why keep this one? Does this one feel better?
What do you consider a good price as you said you paid a fair price? I think new they are £3.5k in a shop. However is £2k to £2.5k tops good for a secondhand one?
I didn’t bond with the other one for some reason. If you can pay 2k for one I’d snap it up. I paid more than that.
I’ve had two of these Pete Thorn guitars myself and one issue which bugs me is how uncontrollable the sympathetic ringing of the guitar is! It’s always present no matter how much I dampen the nut or springs in the rear cavity! - Have you also found this to be the case with yours? In between every note is a nasty ‘ping’ sound!

@@TheStudioRats Interesting to hear that. Maybe you are lucky with your PT, but it’s ever present in the sound of both I’ve tried. Lovely guitar, but that ringing overtone is a nightmare!

At 14:31 you say the guitar weighs 7.5 kilograms. That is about 16.5 pounds. Did you mean 7.5 pounds, because a 16.5 pound guitar is a heavy beast?

Would love to see this up against the.... Harley Benton 'version of this, 🤭 just for a laugh.. and see if you can upgrade it to get as close as to the original.. Purely for the sake of' can it be done'.. Just an idea Paul..
Pickups, tuners, bridge, everything can be upgraded pretty easily. The neck and the frets might be the biggest difference after the upgrade. It would be interesting to feel both guitars and play them before and after upgrade. I mean, if the sound is okay, the feel of the guitar is what I personally focus on.

Great idea. I think pickup change and nut on the Harley is enough to get it close enough
But will all come down to feel and weight if the guitar on which is best for a person.
They there is the investment value . Suhr will hold value but the Harley will also be cheap

both LP and PT sound killer. Not really hearing the 'dark' character of the LP.
I know Suhr’s have great reputations, but I just have never clicked with them. Every one I have tried just doesn’t seem to connect to my soul the same way Fender, PRS, and Gibson’s do. I get goosebumps when playing those other three, but the Suhr’s just never give me that kind of feeling.
Doesn't help they are insanely expensive for a strat ( easy to construct) guitar. Had a modern pro and it was good but too little guitar for the money. Their amps and reactive load are the best in the business tho.

I’ve felt that way for years about PRS and Suhr, I’d never found one that leaves me anything other than ‘cold’ when I play it. That was until last year when I picked up and played a Suhr Classic Strat HSS (limited edition Pauwlonia). I bought it there and then and still think it is an unbelievably great sounding and beautifully constructed guitar.
@@steviesynapse Nice! I also had a Suhr Classic Strat HSS (but not that limited edition one) and it just never connected with me. With PRS, I have a Modern Eagle and a McCarty S2, and both of them call to me. I can’t wait to get home from work every day and pick those up and play, even more so than my Gibson Les Paul or my Fender custom Strat and Tele. The two Suhrs I have owned never made me feel that way, so I ended up selling both of them. But maybe there’s one out there like yours that will change my mind someday. Thanks for the tip.

yea korea made.... BUT... i have 2 of them here from sweet water...
i did not have to touch the tunning as shipped to me!

but i did reset up the guitar with the strings i like and my action as fast and super low.
yea the good ones are a bit over a grand unless you get a deal on them.
the neck on the schecter is what got me into them...
