Having been to a riding school in my mid teens, I can say kids are stupid and just want to force the horse to lift a foot. I knew to do the knee thing just because I grew up with horses, but 99% of the class were cringy bad 'horse girl' types or just kinda dumb and impatient.

Instead of leave in conditioner for brushing your horses tail, you can use a solution of listerine (store brands work just as well) and baby oil. It helps to get rid of dandruff in their tails as well as conditioning them. Always works wonders on my horses tails.

    • @Danceswithbees

@@IT-zx5jc yes. Although i usually opt for the yellow store brand ones from walmart or target (much cheaper than listerine with the same effect)
The mouth wash is to help with dandruff and cleaning the hair and the baby oil is to help with conditioning it. So you can kind of change the proportions based on what you think your horse needs more of. My horse gets a very dandruffy tail so i put about 60-40 mouth wash to baby oil to help get rid of the dandruff. It doesnt take much baby oil to get the tail looking really nice and shiny and conditioned

Definitely pick through the tail and mane with your hands before brushing and add plenty of detangle spray
But whenever you brush out the hair, ALWAYS start at the bottom and work your way up slowly.Whenever you are brushing through a knot, you are pulling out a ton of hairs. If you run into a knot, pull it apart with your fingers until you an brush it though from the bottom.

    • @LeeBertgess
      @LeeBertgess 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I do work from bottom up, but I also twist the tail a few times and keep it twisted. For the life of me I can't remember where I read that tip, but it prevents any pulling out of hairs while combing it out.

U tie to buckle to the right hole with twine and it works 😁 I’ve never even owned a break away halter I just do this and it has actually broke once when my mini was tied (the lead rope was also tied to twine) and my dog came running and scared the daylight out of him 😂 he reared up and it broke the twine on the post surprisingly didn’t 🤷‍♀️ this also saves money LOL 😊 I’ll def use the bell boot hack 👍 also this break away hack is my original idea that I came up with when I was ten 👍

I have my own life hack that my whole family uses on all 5 of our horses, and even passed on to my lesson barn because it's cheap and works great! For thrush prevention, just buy a large bottle of listerine, the mint kind, and put it in a spray bottle. Then you just spray it on the hoof, but make sure it gets in all the little nooks and crannies. You can leave it as is in the bottle, or dilute it with a little water. It works wonders for thrush prevention!

Cleaning your brushes with fence is great, my mother always had a large cooling rack up on the barn wall for that. While not a horse hack per say, Glycerine Saddle Soap spray works wonders in holding pony tails in super fine hair (much better than even extra strong hair spray, much chear).

I also find that with thin tails or any horses tails if you do it in smaller sections starting from the bottom it doesn't pull out a crap ton of hair like it does when you brush the whole tail from the beginning. Also you can use a metal curry comb or shedding brush to clean out the body brush. Works so well!

I use those disposable women's face and eyebrow razors to scrape off bot eggs. When they get dull for me, the go to the barn. I am telling you this is the best ever! One pass and they are gone! You can use a new one, but use a lighter hand because it might take a little hair with it. It will not cut skin though. I like the not too sharp, not too dull. If I don't have any in that category I will happily use the sharp ones. Schick makes my favorite, I get them from Amazon. While we are talking, these are the best to get the peach fuzz off your face and exfoliate. Makeup, Moisturizer and sunscreen all work better on a smooth face. Happy scraping!

I guess I sort of have a training hack/tip that is pretty obvious. If your horse always tries to run of at the mounting block or tries to move away, give them a treat every time you get on. It will turn a negative situation into a positive one. This worked with every horse I've tried it on😄.

Best thing to keep tails long and thick is tail bags/boots/wraps. My horses live in braid in tail wraps or tail boots. Tail is braided and protected so it isn't getting tangles and ripped out. You don't have to take them out to practice. I only rebraid every 1-2 weeks. The tail wraps i buy (cactus tails) says that you can go longer in between. And then ditch the rubber bands and use black electrical tape. Way less damaging to the hair.
Pretty much, my routine will all of my horses has been to redo the braids in the mane and tail once a week or every other week. I finish off the braids with electrical tape (biomane has a great video on this). And I put the tail back in its wrap or boot.
And it seriously does wonders. Without changing her diet at all, I took a mare that wouldn't grow her tail past her hocks to almost 6 inches longer (in about 5 months). And the short hairs in her mane are growing out, making her mane start to look pretty thick. I am going to put her on biomane here in the next month or so and see if I can get it to grow out a little faster.

It is thicker than oil and pure oil can look greasy pretty quick. Sprays are nice but the thicker pour kind has always worked much better me. You must be careful not to use too much, and each horse is different so practice makes perfect. If you use too much, it will be greasy looking. Pour some in your hand and rub together, then work in long sweeping motions down and through your horses tail (and mane). The mane will need less product. Their manes stay cleaner and much easier to brush. If they get dirty, it is usually very easy to lightly brush the dirt off. I hope this helps.

Coconut oil is a big for me
    1. Helps with tail/mane growth and shine
    2. Spray on body to make shine (NOT where saddle sits
    3. On nose and around eyes to darken colour
    4. Hooves it shines and is good for them.
    5. In food
    6. On boots before entering the ring to make them shine

My pony goes to kids' birthday parties and does pony rides and she eventually figured out to look directly at whoever is taking pictures and put her ears forward, sometimes she will smile or stick her tongue out. Her name is Samantha, she is an American Shetland, about 11hh.
    She is a chestnut-colored pony.

When I wash my horses I leave conditioner in there mane and tail for about 15-20 minutes just to moisten there skin cause I find that if I don’t do that they get very flaky. But I leave the conditioner in there they have nice moist crest or tail. Not only that but there hair just looks and feels so much better.

Picking up a horse's feet...I learned to run my hand down the inside of the leg and gently squeeze the chestnut. Works like a charm.

Excellent tips concisely presented. I have one for you - For white or gray tails that get urine stains, a 1/1 ratio of vinegar and baking soda for 20 minutes removes the yellow very well. Rinsing thoroughly is a must since the baking soda will leave little grains in the hair.

if you have a white horse with a really dirty patch put ketchup on it. or if you want to wash there whole body, either shampoo with BLUE food colouring in it or BLUE fairy liquid. works every time

If you can't borrow a powerwasher from someone you know, there is a solution. A lot of gasstations offer powerwashing. Throw your stuff in the trunk, wash them and you're done. It's only 2 or 3 € .

If you live somewhere that it snows and you're turning your horses out, spray the bottoms of their feet with Pam or some kind of cooking spray beforehand, it keeps the snow from piling up and becoming giant ice balls that you have to wedge out later

Really? Last snow I tried brushing on vegetable oil but it didn't work. My horses have shoes; does that matter?

My favourite hack that wasn't here is using a piece of bailing twine to undo the 2 pieces on your square bales. Just get a stray piece, wrap it through the one you want to undo and go backwards and forwards in a sawing motion. No need to struggle to pull it off or use scissors.

Its so funny because, you use a fence too clean your brush. In Germany wie use a "Striegel" (curry comb?) And you need it by the way to clean your horse in the winter from mud or to massage them.

Old time grooms will tell you to never comb your show horse's tail. It should be hand picked as you did, separating each hair so as not to break the hair. It also gives it a fuller look.

I like to use a dandy brush for the tail, it gets the shavings/hay/twigs and whatnot out without snagging the hair as much as a regular human hair type brush, and if you have the plastic curry with the longer slender really dense tendril bristles, those work really well in the tail, too!

Instead of going back and forth between your horse and a gate to clean your brush, just hold a metal shedding blade in your empty hand and after a few brushing strokes, run the brush across the blade and it works as well as the gate.

Interesting with the Clyde's. My friend put it on her saddle and it RUINED it. They gave her a discount but she had to buy a completely new saddle. 😬 Have you used it much before?

Insted of buying conditioner spray just mix horse conditioner with water and put it in an old spray bottle way cheaper

Someone returned a saddle pad I loaned them in an utterly filthy and stinky condition. 🙄 I live in an apartment and keep my tack at home, so I took the pad to a car wash and used the power wand to clean it. There was no way that pad was coming home smelling that bad. It was clean as could be after the light power wash. I never loaned tack out again.

Keep a curry comb in your hand while brushing and scrub your brush on the curry to clean. Tap the curry on the bottom of your boot when needed.

If your adjusting another bridle for your horse use the bridle that fits your horse to mesure for another bridle and also when training go at it like you have all day don’t go at it like you don’t have much time also when your horse starts walking ahead of you use a stud chain around there nose it’s bedder then a bridle and it works
