  • SYNOPSIS
Maritime decarbonization refers to the process of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the shipping industry to mitigate climate change. The shipping industry is responsible for approximately 2-3% of global GHG emissions, and as such, there is a growing urgency to reduce its carbon footprint.
What: The main focus of maritime decarbonization is to shift towards cleaner fuels and technologies, such as low-carbon fuels like hydrogen, ammonia, and biofuels, and zero-emission technologies such as electric and fuel cell propulsion. In addition, improvements in ship design, operational efficiency, and supply chain optimization can also contribute to reducing emissions.
When: The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set targets to reduce carbon intensity by 40% by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. These targets are aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.
How: The maritime industry can achieve decarbonization
