Thank you, this has been really helpful and reassuring, my cat is about to start chemo and I was wary of the drugs and how to handle them safely. You are so positive and you have made it seem alot less scary, your information is very clear and I feel ready to help my cat through the challenges ahead.

I was just on the Peter Mac cancer website which is the biggest cancer centre in the whole of Australia and the handling of chlorambucil should be done with full PPE because it been a cytotoxicity drug and even if it is in tablet form. So why is there a difference in how nurses handle this chemo drug to pet parents. Why are vets not mentioning the risks of handling this drug they say just keep it in the fridge with all your food that is ridiculous. And just wear gloves there seems to be a big gap in how vets handle this drug and how the human medical oncologists handle it.

Great information for our veterinary clients so they can stay safe at home. I also like that you have the info sheets on your website that pet owners can download and have printed material at home if that is easier for them. Thanks for all you do!

Dr. Sue, thank you so much for this video and for the links you included. My 23 month old Kitty was diagnosed with Intestinal and Kidney Lymphoma this last week (Thursday). No symptoms, except small weight loss over the last 2 months and sleeping a little more in the late afternoon. We went to Blue Pearl, here in Louisville, KY for ultrasound and fine needle aspirate, which confirmed Lymphoma. We begin weekly chemo treatments on Tuesday (July 15, 2020). I've been researching day and night for the last 6 days. Your site provides the best most complete info I've found yet. I still wonder if we're doing the right thing. We had a 12 year old dog who went thru chemo 16 years ago for Lymphoma. We got a remission after the first treatment and held it for 3 months - then it returned and though we went through another 3 month of chemo could never get a 2nd remission. I always said I don't think I would ever put another animal thru chemo, but here we are. I don't know what else to do. My little boy cat is such a sweetheart, we also have his sister, who so far seems perfect healthy. They are so bonded. I've had them both since about 8 weeks of age, when they showed up at my back door one cold, rainy nigh. I seek your advice...with the enlarged kidney and mass in his kidney and another mass in his intestines - am I doing the right thing by putting him thru chemo? Any advice you can give will be sincerely appreciated. Thanks again for the great info you shared. It's so helpful in learning about how to handle the chemo.

Hi Dr. Sue. Your videos and website are SO helpful! Thank you!! I do have a question. If my cat were to have poop stuck to his back fur and get it on some furniture in the house what is the best cleaning agent for this (if it is something that can't be put into the washer)?

Hey Sue - my fur baby died this AM, 22 April, the dreaded 'Big C'. She was 13yrs, 5mths - a very small, spayed Maltese, 2.5kgs. I am devastated!
The vet felt a belly lump 14th Feb. She had a large liver mass surgically remcved 27th Feb - it was later ID-ed as Hemahgicsarcma. I was aware it is aggressive, but I prayed I may get decemt time with her, esp as I gave her metra chemc tablets - I decided agaimst real chemc at the vet, because she has bad separatim amxiety & she hated 2 be away frm me. Plus vet said it wud maybe buy her time - but there is zilch cure!
She died at 5am 2day, as I held her. I'm very sad because she was restless all day, & she struggled 2 stamd up 2 pee. I was aware she was weak with amaemia, but I failed 2 realise she was very clcse 2 death!
We wemt 2 bed at 12 & I stayed awake with her, because she was very, very restless. I prayed she'd fall asleep, but sadly she stayed awake - restless, if very weak.
At 4am I called the vet & said I'd have her euthamised at the surgery that am - it's a hcliday here UK, which is why a vet wud't visit me 2day as I wud have wished - but after that call 2 the vet, she deterirated rapidly.
At 5am, she suddely started very fast breathig & pamtig, as if she was 2 warm - I guessed she was at her last stage.
Suddely she was quiet & still - she had left me! The death, as it came, was quick. A few secs later she gasped twice - but I saw she was dead, it was a reflex - & she weed a little. She stared at me thru ut, as I said "I luv U" & that she was my sweet girl.
I wish I had her put 2 sleep the day B4 - I fear she suffered the last 5 hrs.But she hated the vet - at least she was spared that. The vet didmt give me a sedative - paimkiller etc 4 her last stages, which I had requested a few times. They replied that at that stage I must take her 2 them - but sadly it was at a time that was impcssible.
Cud U tell me what killed her - was it her mass returmed - did it bleed... I felt her belly was fatter, maybe with fluid. Maybe she had a fresh mass... Vet said a receht blccd test shcwed her liver & kidmeys were failihg. .. Was it kidmey failure....
Much appreciated yr FAB vids as I battled this. Bless U! If U cd reply I'd be very grateful! XXX

I am so so sorry for your loss. I wish I could help but I cannot know what the cause of her death was especially without being her actual vet who was taking care of her medically. I know that you are hurting now but know that you did all you could and your dog was lucky to have such a loving family. With sympathy, Dr Sue

@@DrSueCancerVet Bless U 4 yr fast reply, much appreciated. I realise it is guesswcrk really, as I had her cremated & a PM wud have revealed exact death cause.
Is there a sedative that I may have givem 2 her, simply 2 ease her death... I felt really helpless watchig her suffer, & wish I had a drug 2 make her relax. I wd like 2 have that imfc if pssible 4 future referemce.
Thx 4 yr kimd wishes. Grief is the price we pay 4 LUV! XXX

Thank you so much for this series of videos. My 11yo cat was just diagnosed with abdominal Lymphoma the day after Christmas and I just received his compounded chlorambucil yesterday. I am giving his first dose this evening as I didn't have the time to safely administer it before work this morning. How long do you generally have your patients continue with prednisolone?

Thank you Dr. Sue for all the helpful information you provide. Our Pittie was diagnosed with stage 4 Lymphoma. Due to the stress he experiences going to the vet it was decided to treat him with CCNU Lomustine pills (once every 3 weeks). Regarding safety, my biggest concern is that he shares his water bowls with our young cats. I can’t seem to find any info regarding the risk of chemo in his saliva that ends up in the water bowl. Do you have any guidance regarding this? He is drinking a ton of water due to the prednisone, and I am constantly rinsing and washing the water bowls. Thank you so much!!!

Hi Dr Sue, you mentioned that it should be fine with multiple cats being around a cat going through chemotherapy as long as there are multiple litter boxes and daily maintenance of them. It sounds like there is still some associated risks for multi-cat household and indoor cats to be around a cat undergoing chemotherapy. is there any online resource providing more information on this? I am worried about the potential harm that can be caused to my other cats. Please let me know..

Dr Sue, how are you? My name is Aiby Nava
My cat has a lump on his right leg and after 4 needle aspirates Dr.s cant really conclude a diagnosis so they suspect injection site sarcoma. 😭 how or where can I schedule a virtual consultation with you before his surgery scheduled on March 11.?

    Dr Sue,
I have a 2.5 years old rottie who had lymphoma stage 5 (spared to the lung). He was on chemo and recently relapse after being in remission for almost 2 months. Currently started him on one of the CHOP chemo. It seems to be working but one of his lymph node hasn’t gone down which I was told it’s rare since the other one did. Is there anything I can help him fight this cancer having it did affect his lung. He is currently on keto (cooked). Please any help will be greatly appreciate!! Ps his first diagnosis was in late March

Thanks Sue! Our vet gave us Lomustine oral to treat our dog's lymphoma and your tips are helpful! One question: do you recommend they have a full belly of food before giving them the pill?

    • @DrSueCancerVet
      @DrSueCancerVet  4 ปีที่แล้ว

So happy you found it help. In my practice we give the Lomustine but some will send home. Make sure you were those gloves, and you can give with food, but does not need to be a full stomach.
