Bad intonation, a few tempo problems, not perfectly in tune, messy bridge, not rehearsed at all. But that is music and it gets no better than that! Anyone can pick up the music as written. But music is about fun and imagination. That was real music by one of the MOST TALENTED SAX PLAYERS OF OUR GENERATION! If any of y'all could do it better, y'all wouldn't be here in the comments! Put some RESPEK ON HIS NAME!!!
Do y'all realize he's circular breathing??? Do y'all hear how he's double tonging and soloing through these changes perfectly??? He has never messed up or missed a note. He is at a music seminar playing with extraordinary complexity and unheard of altissimo range, and you people think he can't "play in tune"? Wow! LoL
For the last couple of year, when I get bored and need motivation to practice, I keep coming back to listen to this video. Simply the best . . . does not sound karaokeish . . . he is one with the instrument . . . .
James carter is great. This not an idiom that is built on the things that he does, but still my take away is all the things beautiful and un Getz like. Carter just loves to play and jam. He's always game. Getz would totally appreciate all he brings here.
James is talented beyond - - -oops! I cannot "discover" the epithet that is apropos to describe his colossal and indefatigable musicianship. His saxophonic poignancy and buoyant virtuosity on the various instruments are incomprehensibly phenomenal and presently unmatched. His is a one-in-every- century feat! Even one-tenth of his ability is still too much for his musical contemporaries let alone for the average Jazz listeners. Forgive the hyperbole, won't you? Today's musical consumers are grossly misled into thinking that Jazz is Instrumental Pop, R & B, Funk or easy-listening non-vocal endeavors - the misnomer, "Smooth Jazz". I'll like to be taught actual Jazz; never have the $60-per-hour fees to pursue my true vocational aspiration. I am an experienced Pop artist who knows and plays only a little JZz licks. Surely, I have been learning to be a true Jazz practitioner. These misconceptions make it very unfairly challenging for the James Carters of the saxophones to be accorded the renown and acclaim which they so richly merit for their onerous sacrifices, and dedication to their craft. So, give this young man his due credit with undue delay! Thanks ....also to the James Carters of the saxophones! - with laudatory regards!
I just happened upon this recording......this young guitarist is BRILLIANT, what is his name? Brazilian I presume.....thank gawd there are fine musicians still out there.....Come to Cal young man and we'll get you a gig......
Which guitarist? There are two of them here, a second one starting at 5:33. The second guitarist is Levis Adel-Reinhardt, Django Reinhardt's great grandson.
I just love to read these comments about how not in tune he is. He is just playing and expressing himself, THAT'S JAZZ! He can play better that you talk. He can play in tune if he wants, but that takes away from the expression. I guarantee none of you who say that can even play a 32 measure solo, and probably can't even play the song with sheet music. LoL
I haven't read those comments, but I don't get the "out of tune"... I'm really sensitive to an instrument being out of tune and I can't hear any - are they talking about going chromatically out of the chord temporarily causing dissonance? (like around 4:40)
Fun and imagination but also discipline and hours of woodshedding. And even more hours of listening to Hawk and Lester, then Getz and Zoot, then Bird and Sonny Stitt, then Jug and Jaws, Dexter and Moody and Ira. And pretty soon your criteria for truth and beauty are limited to relatively few players on each horn (in the case of Stitt, make it two horns).
My wife has three James Carters in her family and none play Sax, too bad. James is out there somewhere all by himself with what one can only say is a full body tuned for music. It happens once perhaps in a generation?
Brother Ian, I hope this gets to you, I'm a klutz with this internet stuff. You might be right about this kid but had it been Getz on the sax you'd hear a better sound/rhythm. Carter is ole-time-jazz and hits plenty of clams. Keep talking to me, sounds like you have a real brain and understanding of music
I disagree. Listen to second guitarist around 6:10 or so. Fantastic metric modulations. Sounds like triplets grouped in 4's and other unexpected groupings.
Because nobody has as unique style of playing as Carter. Not to mention that camera recordings always mess up the tuning, whoever plays. Really doubt Carter has problems with intonation or with anything connected to music.
LoL How? He is literally the most complex player ever. Circular breathing, crazy combinations of notes and range, not one missed note! If he's a fruad, who is real??? Please tell me.
I believe he is purposely playing notes a little off (micro tuning) to take the music really outside and then bring it back again. What some hear as out of tune, others hear as another level to his genius that some can't appreciate or understand.
He needs to work ...on...his...tone!?! Is that what you said??? My good sir, are you mad!?! You must be crazy! He is playing JAZZ! And can you do what he does??? Can you name a better sax player alive right now!?! I'm willing to bet my last dollar that you yourself can't even play better than me!

Pascal de Bourgoin 38
What what an incredible sharing ! Jazz has No FRONTIER at all !
No one plays better a bossa nova than a Brazilian musician.
one of my best memories! be by your side James at the beautiful Semois sur Sein festival ;-)
J.C. is a sax-monster 🎶🎶🎶🎷😊👍
Muito obrigado pela Homenagem James.

Hes is very good i saw him here in chicago.
Levis Adel-Reinhardt's solo starts to get crazy around 6:20. Nice stuff!

+wyndhl eodumegwu Amen! He is so athletic on the sax; almost a Sonny Rollins type alpha on the sax; love him to death!
+iamanubus2
So, so true, my friend!
One has to create new words so as to describe his surrealistic eminence adequately.
wyndhl eodumegwu Well-spoken, constructive criticism and high-vocabulary language
Daaaamm that was good!!!!
Bravo!
Que dire ? Du pur bonheur !
Very good. !!!!!!
JC is a blast always
04:23 "Can We Be Friends?" "She looks straight ahead not at me" - impeccable logic.
I just happened upon this recording......this young guitarist is BRILLIANT, what is his name? Brazilian I presume.....thank gawd there are fine musicians still out there.....Come to Cal young man and we'll get you a gig......
oldadler1 no brazilian, man. I can entirely sure say it, he doesn't have the bossa' swing
Which guitarist? There are two of them here, a second one starting at 5:33. The second guitarist is Levis Adel-Reinhardt, Django Reinhardt's great grandson.
Awesome
I think James should purchase a special low A straight B flat soprano saxophone.
Muito bom cara!
excellent
pesquisem saraiva o rei do sax soprano .simplesmente d mais umsuper talento esqueido.
Os caras são bons. Rearmonização interessante da música.
INSANE
James Carter is God of the sax
I don't think you can own a song just because it was written about a girl from your county. Music is everyone's to enjoy and share.
wowzer

Esse cara é um jenio
Very good idol Mr James carters
The guitar player felt so unrecognized throughout this entire thing
the guitarist killed bossa nova though
Carter fait vraiment ce qu'il veut avec ses instruments : joli ou disruptif "as you like it "
Fun and imagination but also discipline and hours of woodshedding. james carter is amazoid in any context
James Carter is a walking instrument
My wife has three James Carters in her family and none play Sax, too bad. James is out there somewhere all by himself with what one can only say is a full body tuned for music. It happens once perhaps in a generation?
I didn’t even realize there were 2 guitarists here lol
There's not, I think he's using a loop pedal
@@Brassman2021 there’s another guy at 5:33
@@XYBand The guy at 5:33 is Levis Adel Reinhardt, Django Reinhardt's great grandson!
@@Brassman2021 No, there's a second player at 5:33, Levis Adel-Reinhardt, who is Django Reinhardt's great grandson!
3:30 nice tak-tak
I like when makes those crazy noises. It's like when your in public and want to choke the sh** out of someone but societal norms frown upon that! lol
Matou a musica
jazz pure jazz
E igual a alguns músicos brasileiros que tenta tocar jazz rsrsrsrs
nice style
4:51 what do he say ?
“Here’s a little somethin in there”
Here there ´ a sol mineur ( Gminor)
At :54 is he dooden tounging?

Great job les gars.
claro, claro
Kkkkkkkkk
ask 4shaq. Nada a ver
I disagree. Listen to second guitarist around 6:10 or so. Fantastic metric modulations. Sounds like triplets grouped in 4's and other unexpected groupings.
That second guitarist is Levis Adel-Reinhardt, Django Reinhardt's great grandson!
Rhythm guitar I think forgot the bridge chords..even the masters mess up now and again.
yes he did
show
Who knows what kind of soprano is he playing!?
Mark VI
Thanks Adam!
Leonardo Marino no problem. Any other questions?
Is his tenor also a mark IV?
Daan Kluwer yep
Call and response 😂
Dude on quitar is fast and speeds up a little, calm down
Kkkkkkkkkk man kkkkkkkkk
very slap tong e vibrato
:(
calm down
I would love to see how you play it...
Shameless...
Play the sopranosax sweet way men not like a tenor
😶
São bons, mas disciplina cairia bem 😉
The From Ipanema
Learn your samba, man.
wtf??
😂
wrong harmony...
Mr guitarists, please you need to improve your Bossa Nova styles! This IS NOT like rock and roll!
Carter should lay out when the other musicians are soloing. It distracts the listener and the soloist and adds nothing to the overall effect.
Guitarist overplayed a shit load too then i guess?
I think one of the guitar players needed help with the form/changes.... also plenty of horn players can "comp"-- no need to say 'never do this'
E desconheço outro no mundo.
Carter is never in tune
You are right Noah!
I'd rather hear a saxophone player playing out of tune with feeling than in tune but without any dynamics or personal expression.
Ryan Williams but why listen to him when there are plenty of players that play in tune with feeling
Because nobody has as unique style of playing as Carter. Not to mention that camera recordings always mess up the tuning, whoever plays. Really doubt Carter has problems with intonation or with anything connected to music.
WHAT!?! He's not trying to play "in tune", he's playing what he feels. Name 1 sax player alive that can do what he can do! Can you!?!
Worst version 😂😂😂😂
massacre!
SABOTAGE
Fraud ...!
LoL How? He is literally the most complex player ever. Circular breathing, crazy combinations of notes and range, not one missed note! If he's a fruad, who is real??? Please tell me.
this tune needs a big warm smooth tenor tone...not a sqarwky one..
un asco !!!!!!!!!!!
the guitar player is clearly a good player but should have took this song through before performing it live... lots and lots of misconceptions here.
yeah but anyone who knows brazilian bossa nova a little bit better can see (actually, hear) the mess he made out of this songs' harmony
Não tem o balanço do samba.
it's a jam session not a performance.
You're literally the worst. Just enjoy the music.
James carter is a very talented musician who needs to work with a tuner.
WHAT!?! He is technically and musically the best saxophonist alive! You do know that right!?! I'm quite sure you can't do .001 of what he can do!
Tune your own ears, pitch is a variable, unless you play keyboards. JC is a monster.
I believe he is purposely playing notes a little off (micro tuning) to take the music really outside and then bring it back again. What some hear as out of tune, others hear as another level to his genius that some can't appreciate or understand.
THAT IS JAZZ
Play your classic tune
Sounds bad, Mr Carter needs to work on his tone 😕👎
Cut me off if you disagree,, [‘-‘l Maybe you require a hearing test?
He needs to work ...on...his...tone!?! Is that what you said??? My good sir, are you mad!?! You must be crazy! He is playing JAZZ! And can you do what he does??? Can you name a better sax player alive right now!?! I'm willing to bet my last dollar that you yourself can't even play better than me!
horrible!!!
+ Mikel Amatria concordo estragou a garota de ipanema!
Mikel Amatria ti connais rien c normal
Worst version 😖
hmm... out of tone, out of tempo, out of rhythm... not a good stuff, allow me!
You know those guys who tune up regular cars so they go as fast as Ferraris, that’s James Carter’s playing. All the chops, no beauty, no soul.
Awesome
Worst version 😖
