James Carter is not human. No one else can get the sounds out of the horn that he can. Once in a lifetime talent. Aggressive and beautiful playing both at the same time
Saxophone duel.. if the house Saxophonist couldn't play altissimmo range like Carter, he would be fired.. I was scared for Joshua Redman... but he pulled it off in the end and held it.. lol..
While Joshua may sound more authentic to the time period (i.e. less crazy haha), I think it’s a stretch to say Joshua “beat” Carter. Any time I come listen to this song I get bored when Joshua’s turn comes up 😆
I’m sorry y’all but there is absolutely no question who was this encounter’s victor, Joshua was tasteful but James laid him out, stone-cold on a stretcher.
Good morning it's a huge error to try to compare extra ordinary talented people. They are both great with exceptional ability. I looked at this several times already. And l ain't done yet.

Love when Joshua Redman takes it to the top, my favorite part.
Joshua Redman is smooth. He can definitely play, MAN....
James Carter is just as well just a little different style.
Everyone has their own sound.
One of my favorite parts 2:52-53
This version haunted me for over 7 years now...❤
I've loved this since "Kansas City" came out. Thanx for posting.

I think Joshua Redman was also playing in a more accurate style for the era as well
Dracula james
Carter tried to be cool, Joshua played just the first tone and Carter lost the battle

Loved the way Redman introduced himself.
Carter won this battle. I’m a huge Redman fan, but what Carter got out of the horn was other worldly
