    I bought a Cooper S E Level 3 back in November 2021 after 30 years of only buying Range Rovers………… big change but the Mini is better built and just as good quality. I bought my S E to run alongside a 2020 New Defender 110 (changed it this year to a D250 HSE 90) and the Mini is now my primary use car. Range isn’t a problem at all, I live a 32 mile round trip from the nearsest decent shops and a 50 miles round trip from the nearest city here in Scotland. I use the car 2-3 times a week, charge it mostly at home on offpeak or solar generated electricity - smaller batteries have a big advantage over big ones in a country where rapid/ultra rapid chargers are thi on the ground and most public chargers are 22kW AC or 50kW DCFC’s - a small battery takes less time on a time limited charger to get a 100% charge (which is recommended in the current gen electric Mini. No point in having any form of Tesla here as there are no close by superchargers (only destination chargers) and anyway even the M3 is way bigger than I need and I don’t need the range as my nearest airport is only 30 miles away so well within the range of the Mini to get there and back. Over my Defender 90 the Mini has not only a much lower price to run (no annual “tax” on EVs until 2025) and a small service every 2 years (why BMW? It’s a cabin air filter change and brake fluid check……) but fuelling costs me mostly zero or at the most 7.5p/kW so the most expensive trip to town costs me 60p………. In my 6 cylinder diesel Defender that same 32 miles costs me £7.30p at current diesel prices. The Cooper is brilliant fun to drive on local bendy back roads where it will leave anything except a motorcycle standing.
    I wasn’t keen on the JO1 when I first saw it and definitely put off by it being built in China but I’m getting to like it more every time I see a review. Maybe I’ll order a JCW for 2026 delivery, depends on the pricing and if that breaches the £40000 floor for starting to pay Luxury car tax here, then it will be a Cooper S E with some extras (like the must have HUD!).
    Kyle, thanks so much for this deep dive review - you might have sold it to me! Hopefully the team at BMW will fix the silly issues like the charge port covers and lack of driver info display without the HUD (my current L3 has the same pop up plastic screen one and I have no problem with it) but that seems to be a cost cutting thing that many car makers are copying from Tesla - not great.

    I have a '23 Mini SE and I love it. The interior looks infinitely better than this. I don't like this version at all. The taillights look like a defaced version of the Union Jack (It's symmetrical) and the interior is way too spartan. It has no instrument cluster, and the only thing I hate in my car, the HUD, is still there. And what happened to the clam-shell bonnet? I'm glad I got mine before they trashed this beautiful car. I am not going to look sideways and wait for my eyes to refocus every time I want to check my speed.

    Until now I thought the HUD was going to be standard to make up for the lack of instrument cluster. It’s not just annoying to have the speed displayed off-center, I’d argue it’s a safety issue. Anything that takes your eyes off the road is a hazard. As minimum they should have included a small display just for speed and fuel/range.
    That said I already know this will be too expensive for me, so won’t affect me. I will be keeping my current Mini for the foreseeable future.

    Would very much prefer this over a Model 3. I agree - just can’t justify pulling the trigger on the current MINI SE with it’s awful range. If you can really get 200-250mi on a charge with the new one it will be a winner as a city car / daily commuter with its more premium features that tesla just doesn’t have. I just wish they kept the design more similar to what MINIs look like now.

    BMW said they were working on Plug & Charge with more than one E-Mobility Service Provider (EMSP) meaning you as a customer could choose with every charging stop if you'll use BMW or MINI Charging or different EMSP, e.g. your employers' EMSP. This would be true Plug&Charge, not only multiple CPOs or "Autocharge".

    Why are there so few EV's that include a retractable sunroof? Is it an efficiency / loss of range issue? Cost issue? Marketing data that consumers don't want them?

    • @Ben-gm9lo
      @Ben-gm9lo 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It adds weight, production cost, brings the possibility of leaks as the car and the seals get old. Mostly though, people just don't use them enough to justify the disadvantages. Tesla for example, stopped doing sunroofs on its cars in around 2016 and now only do pano glass roof panels. Their monitoring of driver use indicated that they just didn't get used. My wife's Mini has one as she has always been a sunroof fan, but to my knowledge she has only used it a couple of times all summer. Just my take on the issue in case it helps.

    • @apexerman1
      @apexerman1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I noticed that too and I use my sunroof whenever I can. I imagine the company wants to steer one toward a convertible. MINI convertibles retract the canvas section like a big sunroof, and if one wants fully top-down motoring, press the button again. I suspect MINI is killing two birds with one stone here.

  • @js-hl5hv
    @js-hl5hv 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I wonder if the reported performance is sandbagged like the previous SE. The claim of 7.3s 0-100kph was wildly slow - the real value is 6.6s (as tested by, well pretty much everybody from Bjorn to Drive). Note that this does *not* include a 1ft rollout. That drops the time by about 0.3s. If that is the case for the J01, the reported 6.7 0-100 could mean close to 6.0 flat, or sub 6 0-60. Personally, I doubt it, as the new SE is somewhat heavier with higher gearing (higher top speed). There is another video online of a current SE driver stating that the new car isn't any faster than the old one, and doesn't drive as well. If you have never driven the previous one, he said the new one would be brilliant, just not compared to the old SE. That is a bit disappointing. Maybe the JCW version will spice things up a bit.
    I am not a fan of the new styling. As an engineer, I understand the bonnet, the raked windscreen, flat handles etc, but it just doesn't look right somehow. I am sure Rover's original "new" mini got the same treatment, and we all love it now. I will be keeping my SE for the time being. Lets see how the JCW version is. So long as people buy the new car, and get to experience what it is to drive a MINI, then it is OK by me. Maybe not *for* me, but still OK in my books. Nice review - can't wait for you to track it. That is probably one area it could better the current one. It has a 10 minute max performance window before the motor overheats and reduces the power. No pressure, but you only have 2 laps to do you time :)

    An improved exterior design; however the front bumper corners, near the wheel wells, look like dents rather than intentional design elements.

      You haven't seen the car in 3D, only 2D. When you photograph a 3D object, it always looks different. I think you may want to see this Mini in person when you can before judging it too harshly.

    If this is a ground up electric, why did they keep the charging port on the rear? Much more convient in the front half of the car.

      The driving advice in the UK Highway Code has always been that drivers should reverse into parking slots. This is safer as most related incidents and accidents occur when drivers leave the slot, not arrive at it. This fits neatly (coincidence?) with most cars having charging ports at the back of the car. It is a sad reality that most of us prefer to drive into a slot forwards as due to convenience, rather than reverse in which is proven to be safer overall. Just my take on the issue.

    Despite the updates, with each generation, the Mini is slowly becoming just another small car. At least the interior is somewhat cool with some real innovation.

    When I hear “Made in China” from “Great Wall Motors” makes me having doubts about this new Mini EV. Because if without the European badge would costs half and nevertheless durability and quality are always a BIG issue with Chinese automobiles.

      For quite a few years now the Mini has been pitched as a “premium” small car, since they ended the basic Mini One model. I’m pretty sure in the US they only ever sold the relatively high end models.

    Sharp eyes there. I was disappointed to see the black wheel arch accents go away. They add a cool sporting flair. The new arch looks a little tepid. I also found the fixed panorama roof surprising. No retractable sunroof? It looks like the convertible will have to fulfill that duty. I'd also like to see paddles operate variable brake regen. One-pedal driving is fine, but hand and foot coordination could offer a tasty driving experience. And MINI's are about fun, right?

    Overall very nice…EXCEPT the hideous center display…looks like they stuck a plate onto the dash…the integrated one from prior gen is much better…and bummer they got rid of some of the switches for the touchscreen…another maker hates people who like to drive cars. As for the HUD, I have that same one on my 2023 Countryman and it’s fine…I actually like it better than the windshield screen ones I’ve had on BMWs, Audis, and Porsches…the HUD will have everything you need in it…speed, directions, music, speed limit…

    Hmmm..very minimilist, to say the least, Inside and out! Can't help feeling that the expected torrent of similarly spec'd, well thought-out, Chinese cars will somewhat diminish the Mini's allure, especially at a fraction of the cost!

    Wait are they showing this in showrooms or is this a pop up store thing. Those lights absolutely are a departure from the styling we are used to. It’s a hard sell as it is being Chinese and Electric before they play with styling. We are on our fifth MINI, currently two on the drive that we’re ordered to our spec factory new but I just don’t see me in this and I’ve done the excellent Oxford factory tour with friends. Grew up with the classic. It’s not that heavy over the F56 with 136bhp - a 180 bhp Cooper is going to be lightning off the line never mind the 230 bhp think it is S. That’s a near on £40k MINI S 😳 Remembering my history with MINI I’d take the GTi as long as it looked like it does shown. Also Renault 5 retro turbo looks brilliant. It’s going to be hard work the Volvo EX30 looks a better Car than this.
    Trouble is we use our MINI’s for driving holidays and the clubman delivered January 2021 has done 78k miles with many trips from Glasgow to London.

    So the price.. after terrifs and import stuff is still going to be less than $10,000.00 UDS right?
    I mean, I wouldn't pay more than 10k for any Mini (ev gas new or used).

    What a great car - perfect size, great styling front and rear, very decent range and power. And the interior is tastefully upscale, too - well, except for that digital dinner plate / frisbee propped up in the center. It's ugly, intrusive, round (bad for maps and text). Yeah, I know it heralds back to the original Mini, but it served a purpose back then. Now it doesn't. I'm sure even Issigonis would object to the way it was done here. Clean that up, integrate it more into the dashboard, make it rectangular, and you'd have the perfect EV that would OWN the small personal transportation market. But I wouldn't be able to take myself seriously being seen driving around with this monstrosity of a display screen.

    Kylie, politics have affected where the mini is built for all of its life. If you look at BMC, British Leyland, Austin, Austin Rover, MG Rover and now BMW, pressure on governments for money has been a big factor. The GWM factory is subsidised by China. Moving production to China has triggered a UK government subsidy to bring EV production back to Oxford. The petrol mini probably only exists to keep the factory going until the subsidy licks in. USA production at a BMW plant is not out of the question if the IRA money is sweet enough. It will be interesting to see how much mini DNA transfers into GWM small EV's and if they eat into mini sales. For me the GWM funky cat needs to be cheaper. For that money, I want a mini.

    I have a 2024 Mini Cooper SE. The interior of this new J01 model is so “Tesla-fied”, I’m not a fan. Of course the center display is a big improvement on the J01, I’d love that on my SE. But all of the other SE character and retro charm is erased with this J01 interior.

    The real quality of the car will be noticeable after, maybe a year of ownership. At these first presentations, I'm not impressed at all, actually I think this is step back in many ways. Good ones first: I like the idea of minimalistic approach and eco friendly materials of the interior. The exterior design is fine till the back end, when it is ruined with the triangular rear lights, but this is subjective. The bad ones for me : having all the important functions and information on one central display is a bad thing because if that screen malfunction, you loose EVERYTHING !
    Turning your eye view from the road and adjusting the temperature, fan speed, etc is even dangerous, and without that head up display, which is optional, knowing your speed, revs, and other current information, will make you dizzy. Now, I own F56 MINI , and I love it , and from your, and other videos , I think that the quality of the materials used in F56 are much better.
