Amelia and others keep messaging me from school emails, When I respond it says that my message has been blocked. I respond to all of my emails so if you don't get a response that's probably why.
My partner and I just got 2 young female guinea pigs, and you are our go to Channel for learning how to take better care of our little piglets and just making sure they are happy. We have learned so much from you, Thank you !!
I just adopted my guinea three days ago. I have him on good hay and new pellets. I am seeing you talk about vitamin C. He also gets veggies in the morning. He is three and has also been by him self.
I've never owned a guinea pig. However, I have looked into nutrition and I believe that pellets are unnecessary if provided with the a large variety of hay (timothy, oat, orchard, bromegrass, bluegrass, fescue, wheat), vegetables, herbs, and fresh greens. I find it very difficult to find a pellet that doesn't contain large amounts of molasses, salt, meal, by product, soy and harmful ingredients with no beneficial properties. Guinea pigs have been domestic for around 4000 years. Despite the changes in behavior, size, and color, dietary needs and GI tracts of guinea pigs haven't changed one bit. I think that because of this, it's crucial to feed them a diet that mimics their wild feeding habits.
My vet said after reading a bunch of studies that pellets are not necessary if they are getting enough hay but they can be given as a small treat if you want. They can be linked to respiratory issues and things like that though because of the powder that comes off of them
My vets where I live (I always went to an animal clinic where they specialize in rodents) always said pellets can be fet but ONLY as an addition but they are not necessary if you can make sure that your pigs get enough vitamin C anyway. It's very important to give a lot of hay so their digestion runs properly (and pay attention that there is no autumn crocus inside because they are poisonous!). Also hay is helping with dental abrasion as well as keeping them occupied all day long. If you decide to feed pellets definitly have to make sure that they are not made with molasses or simmilar as binding material because the sugar in it may disturb the natural bacteria in your guinea pigs bowels which in extreme cases will cause deadly diarrhea. I'm sure though Scott is very well informed in what he feeds his piggies. :) I just don't agree with the part that pellets are necessary because mine lived up to 8 years and never had them but in the beginning. I only fed hay, vegetables, grass, herbs and sometimes fruit as a treat. You can also occasionally give oilseeds (like but I wouldn't recommend them if your piggies are in the upper weight range. :) (sorry for any mistakes english isn't my mother tongue...)
My vet said they don’t need pallets I do give them Sherwood and Oxbow garden select but they don’t really eat them Sherwood pellets always stay untouched They really like Oxbow essentials but it has soy and molasses so I don’t want to risk it
In Germany vets promote this as well. It is quite common there and Guinea Pig websides provide owners with lots of information on wich foodgroups they can feed. The logic behind it is that those foods contain lots of moist wich is good for the kidney’s and the chewing movement is more natural wich prevents dental issues and there is less boredom and a healthier weight. At least that is my interpretation, a vet said the same to me. The guinea pigs that we adopted were used to pellets so they still get them, with freshfood and extra vit c like childlife. But I understand now why some vets say this, it is a good thing if you know about all the different natural foods they can eat. But when we don’t know it is less good.
Yes, all the years I've never been able to get my piggies to eat them. My Vet says the same thing. I've tried all SPS & Sherwood with no luck. They get all the Oxbow Timothy and Orchard Grass Hay, Veggies, & Child Life vitamin C every day❤🐹😘 As A treat they get Peaflakes.
This is awesome! I had heard different opinions when I was first researching piggy diets a few years ago, and it's great that you put accurate info out there.
hey scott. pipsqueak always touches my heart. thank you for showing him at the end again. i love him. please give him a kiss from me for valentine, if you have one left. hi hi 🌸😊🌸
Very very helpful advice Scotty.. I got the vitamin c I ordered and I can really see a difference in my female piggy, she’s more alert , more playful , more happy and loves it.
I give pallets and hay everyday to my Piggies . They really seem to enjoy it and especially in the evening little Timmy & Jonathan my babies love to chew fresh pallets . Good for their teeth 🦷 to keep them healthy no over grow as well . 💕
Hi Scott your videos are very much appreciated. You and Saskia have taught me a lot. I love the background ambience music too, it's very calming. I reside in Toronto Canada. I wish we had grassroots organizations like LAGPR. Thanks brother. I will donate.
In the UK. Rosewood meadow menu are the healthiest ones to feed Guinea pigs and rabbits. Look them up, they are expensive but totally worth it. Molasses free, grain free, 100% natural forrage, no alfalfa or lucerne used and have vit c and d added. No junk filler at all
Those pants are super cute! I wish I could have piggies but I have two cats and a noisy jealous dog, so it won't happen for a long time. Good thing I have channels like yours to watch in the meantime! 💙🙂
5:54 You be quiet! 🤣🤣 Excellent advice, as usual. My girls have been eating Oxbow Essentials for years. Sometimes the bowl will be empty and other times I find they haven’t touched it. That’s where the balanced diet comes in. Other really good advice at 12:01 is how keeping your piggies at their particular level of chunkyness is important in case they stop (or slow) their eating. Thanks for another great video. 🐾
It sounds wonderful as the pallets make that sound entering the bowl . heheh...lol All the piggies perked up & seem to love it and Gerry looked exited . Went for it right away. 🤪
My 4month yr old hasn't been eating her pellets close to none past few days . I give her 1 1/2 cup of mix veggies everyday. And a lot of hay. I get her Timothy brand for everything
If you notice the small pets select bags are not transparent. Vitamin C degrades in sunlight. That's why I suggest supplementing with child life liquid vitamin C. Fresh hay and fresh veggies also make the difference. I said not all pellets are equal
Hi thanks for this video I am getting a guinea pig in a month or so and I was getting some stuff for it thanks for this wonderful bunch of information very helpful
I mix Oxbow with Small Pet Select and Kaytee supreme pellets. Works well. Just pellets no extra stuff. Once in a while they get Browns as a treat. Would get Sherwood but it’s too expensive for 23 piggies.
Hi, Scott, I appreciate your videos very much. Until this particular video, my purchasing pellets was determined by price and whether or not I could see if there was too much dust accumulated in the bag. I don't want pellets that will easily crumble. Anyway, having watched the video I checked the ingredients on the bag for content. Wheat middlings, alfalfa meal, and soybean meal were the top three. I don't know if this is good or bad. I also checked out your feeding guide and found a sentence that started something like "These are the brands I recommend, colon - - and it was blank. Were you aware of that? Again, thank you for posting these videos for us. I am grateful for your time and effort.
hey, Scotty! I love your videos and I try to be the first one to watch a soon as they come out! Question, We used to just lay the hay on the floor, but we recently got a hay rack. wedony really have space open on the wires, unless we move the houses and food around. how well Do guinea pigs cope with change? I heard it's not OK to lay the hay on the floor, but I would need to move stuff. So how well would they cope?
It is important to have a minimum of 8² uninterrupted feet. You could have a 100' but if it is just in little sections it doesn't do any good. Also laying the hay on the floor will make it dirty and waste much more. That's why I recommend the snack shack as I said in the video. I won't hold out advice I will always share it with everyone. But if you are asking me to OK something I haven't recommended you will have to decide for yourself.
I believed that too for so long! It was only recently that I found more accurate information regarding the teeth topic: The only thing that is solid enough to grind a tooth down is another tooth. Meaning that it is the amount of time spent chewing/grinding that is crucial. Much time grinding is best achieved when guinea pigs eat lots of their natural foods, which is grass, herbs and greens. Rodent teeth are made for soft foods rich in water and fibre. Solid foods are chewed very differently from grass and greens: Pellets have to be squashed, which puts a lot of pressure on rodents' dental roots their teeth are not made for, ultimately resulting in preventable and very painful teeth problems (and other secondary health conditions). Also, when fed pellets, guinea pigs spend less overall time chewing because of the energy density. I do not know if there are any well researched websites (backed up with a lot of veterinarian literature) in English, I only know of the German site Meerschweinchenwiese and highly recommend it. Hope some people find this comment helpful, it comes from a place of care and curiosity.
When feeding the pellets, should I wait until the bowl is empty before refilling? Mine never completely empties the bowl, there are always pellets in it, just wondering. I feed fresh veggies and hay daily plus fresh water twice a day. Thank you for all your great videos.
i have 2 guinea pigs they have a mix food of pellets and these um idk what they r called but they like the mix food snd they are ok form mix food they love it can someone tell me why ppl say piggies cant have mix food?
I've been looking into this lately actually! A few days ago I ordered a dried plant mix from a brand called Grünhopper, which has vitamin C rich aronia berries. I'm going to feed this instead of pellets and see what they think. They used to get grain free pellets but I was always throwing the majority away after a day of being mainly untouched. All of the grain free pellets here, at least that I've found, are alfalfa based but in small amounts I guess they'd be fine to feed.
Would you be able to do a video on piggies with diabetes and cataracts, diet etc, I think people would benefit from knowing the signs of this illness. Love the videos and I enjoy wearing my guinea pig whisperer tshirt and my gari t shirt, ❤️
My boys absolutely go BANANAS when I give them pellets so I'm not going to stop unless research comes out saying it's bad for them. Also, they are picky and only like Oxbow brand hay and I have no idea how they can tell what freaking brand it is but they just kick it on the floor if it's Kaytee brand lol.
I was wondering if there was any way of making a cage bigger? Because I have a cage and I’m scared it’s to small but my great grandpa’s gave it to me before he passed, it was his last Christmas present for me
Being sentimental about a cage if it is not appropriate for your pet does not make sense. I'm sorry for your loss but you can always keep a store bought cage for traveling or in case of an emergency or if you find another animal in need or for short term fostering. I have a number of videos where I recommend the types of cages and also the information is on my free Guinea pig carry guide on my website. Www.scottysanimals.com
I didn't know that a bit of weight can save their lives but mine aren't underweight or overweight anyway sooo thats good to know very interesting also to know. thanks for sharing that information. lol xx thanks that mine r fine and well thank the lord lol xx
Could you please do a vlog about Timothy hay and why they eat the fluffy tips more than the straight pieces .. I feel like I waste a ton of hay because the only want the fluffy tips.
Hello, I have a question what type of bedding is that behind you on your left or right side where you can see the cage on the bottom floor?! I really want to change my guinea pig to that bedding and well I want to know which bedding is more safer and more comfortable!! Your videos are just smooth and tranquil and cute hahahaha also is it safe if I give my guinea pig the pellets with corn, seeds, and red and green circle with hole in the middle also from and with Timothy hay and she likes it the most my little spoil brat!!
@@Eliza_woods04 I’ve been giving that to her for now about 3 years now and she’s fine and she indeed loves it!! Also what I mean were hoops colors green and red kind of like cereal fruit loops but they aren’t fruit loops!!
The one I usually feed her and have no problem with is the Wild Harvest Advanced Nutrition and it’s basically the 8lb bag. I haven’t seen any problems with I mean with her health or something abnormal. She’s a pretty picky she doesn’t even like carrots and I would give them to her and nothing she won’t touch them!! I would leave them at night and in the morning it’s still there she won’t touch them!! And well I do find that weird!! Any advice on how I can feed her carrots? Since that’s their main source for vitamin c!! She does eat green or red peppers she likes them and well half C there!!
@@mercedeskennedy7519 I know that but still she doesn’t like them the carrots anyhow I did switch her to the pellets alone hahahaha anyhow you assuming something shouldn’t be of your concern their my guinea pigs not yours!! You can do whatever you want with yours and leave me alone with mine it was just a concern left that alone their still fine and long live to them!!
I have 3 Guinea's and 2 are mother and daughter, we got a second one as companion for our 1 st pig we rescued, but the one was pregnant and had 2 babies, 1 boy and 1 girl, we gave the male back to who we got the female pig, but now mom and daughter seem to pick on our 1 st pig pinkie, they keep jumping on her back, is this normal behavior?
What if mine won't eat pellet anymore? He used to love his Oxbow adult essential. He still eats hay and veggie. I took him to the vet but they can't find anything wrong with him. Thanks.
Change the brand of pellets you use. I've been using the small pet select brand that Scotty talks about for 3 years and my guineas always eat it. I believe on the SPS website you can get a sample bag to try. All their products are a great quality.
@@sierahornberger3023 Thanks. I've tried that too, but he won't even go near it. He started eating the pellet again earlier, but would only eat a few pieces and ran off. I am so puzzled why the sudden change.
I had a question non pellet related- I have read that guinea pigs can not use the balls to roam around in yet they are advertised as being able to- which is accurate?
Yes, it hurts their spines, they can injure their feet, it can crash into things, it's claustrophobic and unnatural and they can't get away from it if they're frightened.
No exercise balls! Guinea pigs can break their spines using them and can get respiratory infections because of the poor ventilation. Try using a large playpen for exercise instead :)
hey scott! i know that people send you stuff like beds and pads so i was wondering if i could send you some stuff. i bought way to much pad making supplies so i want to make sure it gets used and its not wasted. :)
I was just going to ask you this question.. The new piggies from the shelter don’t see to be that interested in them. I got all my items too!!! Love them all!!

Hi Scotty, we miss you at the rescue, may be you can occasionly do a "monday live? " By the way are Mike and Billy together now or is this an old video?
My piggies LOVE their pellets. Like to an annoying level. 😂 I let them run out and I say “Eat some hay instead, boys!”, then they pout. We use Oxbow pellets. I’ve been wanting to try the Small Pet Select ones, but they’re so pricy in comparison!

Small pet select pellets have soybean hulls and wheat middlings just like Oxbow essentials red bag but more expensive

Not don't think there safe Guinea pigs should be having seeds and corn
@@Eliza_woods04 I’ve been giving that to her for now about 3 years now and she’s fine and she indeed loves it!!
Also what I mean were hoops colors green and red kind of like cereal fruit loops but they aren’t fruit loops!!
@@jackierico449 well they might love it but its probably not goood for them. I would do sime research about the brand
What do you think about kruses alfalfa based pellets
U are so amazing with animals and u have helped me so much thnx
Thank you for saying that, Emielia!
@@ScottysAnimals u can't denie it if its true
I have 3 Guinea's and 2 are mother and daughter, we got a second one as companion for our 1 st pig we rescued, but the one was pregnant and had 2 babies, 1 boy and 1 girl, we gave the male back to who we got the female pig, but now mom and daughter seem to pick on our 1 st pig pinkie, they keep jumping on her back, is this normal behavior?
I believe that Xtra vit c prefent stones
Plastic balls are an absolute NO NO.
Is it because it will hurt their spines?
Yes, it hurts their spines, they can injure their feet, it can crash into things, it's claustrophobic and unnatural and they can't get away from it if they're frightened.
No exercise balls! Guinea pigs can break their spines using them and can get respiratory infections because of the poor ventilation. Try using a large playpen for exercise instead :)
so if hay is the pellets do they still need the accrual hay?
hay 80%
pellets 10%
fresh veg 10%
I love your pants!😂
Pjs!!
Aha, that’s why I thought! Cozy day!
Love your channel!
I notice my guinea pig dont eat much of pellets..
Pellets and fresh veggies and Timothy hay
I dont give mine pellets. Just oxbownvitamin c tabs
hey scott! i know that people send you stuff like beds and pads so i was wondering if i could send you some stuff. i bought way to much pad making supplies so i want to make sure it gets used and its not wasted. :)
It won't go bad and maybe you will find the time in the future to make something.

@@dienahfee777 Ok thanks! I want to put it to good use.
I just love pipsqueek
I can’t seem to get the 15% off is there a code I need to add? I’m UK
I have always wondered this, it will be nice to find out
I don’t feed my piggies pellets I feed them a dry feed that consists of Timothy hay sunflower seeds dried corn other seeds and forage
Guinea pigs shouldn't be eating seeds whatsoever
I was just going to ask you this question.. The new piggies from the shelter don’t see to be that interested in them. I got all my items too!!! Love them all!!
Not all pellets are created equal Rebecca.
I'm glad you got items from the shop. Can you comment about which ones you got and the quality?
My guineapig doesn't want to have pellets

Hey Scotty what's that white thing on Pop's cage?
I think it might be something for BB.
@@sarahstardust kinda looks like it doesn't it.

go to vet as soon as you can!
Omg that's serious pls go to the vets Guinea pigs shouldn't be bleeding
hi scott
Hi Geogia
Hi Scotty, we miss you at the rescue, may be you can occasionly do a "monday live? "
By the way are Mike and Billy together now or is this an old video?
My pigs won’t eat veggies besides carrots. Thoughts anyone?
Have you tried parsley and coriander? Romaine lettuce? Apple? A little beetroot? I'd keep trying small amounts of a mix of different things.
My piggies LOVE their pellets. Like to an annoying level. 😂 I let them run out and I say “Eat some hay instead, boys!”, then they pout. We use Oxbow pellets. I’ve been wanting to try the Small Pet Select ones, but they’re so pricy in comparison!
