    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.

I already had the Virgin Oak, and bought the 12 year today. Lovely stuff, indeed! Sweet honey, light fruits, with spices and nuts on the finish. Quite a long finish for a 12 year expression. Had the Deanston 12 for a few days now - it’s getting better. Takes water very well - tones down the spice kick and opens the mid palate fruits and nuts. Love this stuff!

Haha finally a pickle back reference 😆. Funny story my wife and I were in our bar and she brings a jar of pickles. I said what’s with the pickles? She says I wanna try whiskey 🥃 again. She doesn’t care for it but she’s not one to give up so she says let’s have a pickle back. I had never heard of it at that time we were new to whiskey and I only had hibiki I didn’t want to do a shot of that cause I thought it a waste. She also brought a bottle of Jack Daniels so she tried one and said hey this taste just like pickles I tried it and thought the same. She was on her 4th when I said hey you might wanna slow down we’re still drinking whiskey 🥃. I knew it was to late when she replied you don’t tell me about my body I know my limits! I said ok but I’m not holding your hair tonight. Needless to say she slept in the bathroom 🚽 and I had the bed all to myself haha.

Would you guys consider dong a video in which the two of you detail your personal favourite whiskeys as of right now? Let's say top 3 or 4 whiskeys each. Also, I would like to also express my enjoyment in watching your whiskey reviews. Always a great time to be had by all who partake in the viewing of your videos. Good day sirs!

I feel like there had been a dearth of blending recently and would like to suggest something I tried a few nights ago. It was roughly 4 parts Naked Grouse to 1 part Lagavulin 8. It really was delightful. Smooth honey, vanilla upfront into peppery smoke and burnt kindling. I found it to be a well integrated experience.

Thank you gentlemen! I love the little bits of science to help us understand why we taste what we taste and how! I finally decided I really don't like the Deanston and should finish the two bottles and get them off my shelf. In working my way to the bottom of the bottle I'm trying to understand what flavors don't appeal to me in that whiskey. I think it's the strong oak. Anyway tonight's comparison to the Glenfarclas 12, was eye opening. after the Deanston 12 (too much pepper and oak) the Glenfarclas is maple syrup sweet smooth and complex to my pallet. Thanks for the reviews!

Dan Rhomberg I think I've figured out Rex's devious plans. I've never heard or read anything about people being down on Deanston. (It opened in 1967 by the way.) It did close down in the 80's for a while and reopened in the early 90's.
The 12yo is a quality, unchillfiltered, uncoloured, higher strength product which is what all distilleries should produce. Let us taste and smell what you make. Don't hide behind dilution and fake orange dye. Good on ya Deanston.

Deanston 18 is a great whisky. I find its very close to the Arran 18 which is an island distillery you should look in to if you can get it in TX.
I bought a Deanston 20 year old finished for 4 years in Port from the distillery this summer. For £100 or $135 its a bit of a bargain

Whats up daniel the magnificent ... rex. I doubt this comment will be seen or make it into a video but i just stumbled upon a whiskey blend that i really enjoy. So after noticing i had very little 4 roses single barrel and even less wild turkey 101 i noticed a shimmering reflection of light behind the pile of empty bottles on my shelf. What i discovered was a bottle of angels envy, about 40% full. After adding the remains of the aforementioned WT and 4 roses i shook the bottle a bit. Little did i know that upon pouring this whiskey it would become a true favorite of mine. I know you guys arent fans of sweet but you may like this combo as much as i do .

Hey guys, I wanted to let you know that I ended up trying the Glenfarclas on a United flight recently, and I have to say that I was a tiny bit let down. I know that altitude (and I assume pressurized cabins, etc.) can have a dramatic effect on one’s senses of taste and smell. So, I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised that I couldn’t find any subtlety or nuance in my little plastic glass. Sure, it was more enjoyable than the Dewars that is usually offered, so I’m not complaining. However, that was my first experience with Glenfarclas, so I’m looking forward to giving it another try in a more proper setting.

Deanston 12 reminded me in the finish/aftertaste of "noble rot" dessert wines (Tokay, Sauternes...). I liked Deanston 12 so much that I visited the distillery (it's close to the castle in which Monty Python shot one of their movies), it was the first distillery that I visited. I liked a lot the whole range of Deanston.

I said I would wait til Saturday to try scotch in my coffee but I couldn’t wait. Since I didn’t have to work or go to class today, I tried it just now. I’d give it a solid 3/10. First of all I’m not usually big on mixing caffeine and alcohol, so I would have to be pretty spectacular for me to like it. Second of all, I usually only like my coffee either black or obscenely, dessertly sweet, so black coffee with a shot of whisky was right in between those two, where I most dislike it. Third, to me it seemed like it buried the actual taste of the whisky (I used monkey shoulder) while preserving the ethanol taste. I think it would still be worth trying with a stronger-tasting whisky at some point, probably with an Islay once I acquire a taste for them, but for now I’m not going to be doing that again any time soon. Also I should say that I make my coffee pretty strong, and that I’m pretty new to scotch and I’m not very good yet at identifying and differentiating the different types of whisk(e)y. If anyone else has tried it or wants to try it I’m curious know what you find.

Why don't you get some sample bottles so you and Rex can make each other an advent calendar of whiskies from the vault. That way you can surprise each other with nice wee drams. I reckon you guys would come up with better calendars than Master of Malt or at least run them close.

Did you ever try the Deanston 20 year old?
While the 12 and 18 are both matured in Bourbon barrels, the 20yo spent all of the time in Oloroso Sherry Casks (and is bottled at 55.3% ABV).
It is really amazing - the dark fruit notes complement the typical, spicy-aromatic Deanston flavor nicely, make it both more quaffable and (in my eyes) interesting at the same time.

The dill note that you guys don’t like (or more that Daniel isn’t in favor of) is more commonly known to be in beer. Especially an IPA. The hops tend to not only give off citrusy notes but if something goes a-rye (ha ha ha ha ha get the pun) the briny, acidic, “pickle-like” notes will show up. I think something similar happened in that whisk(e)y but the master distiller enjoyed it and chose to keep it in there.

Oh Rex so under valued at times... Pickle in the back!! Question for you glorious bastards, there is a Daniel Beard shaped Garfield sticker on the back window, any chance of printing that off and offering for mass consumption on Whiskey Biscuits or Whiskey Tribe? I bet the tribe would be happy to take photos with it holding their favorite Spirits.. Thanks for all you do!

So a tiny tiny pour of vodka might make a very effective palette cleanser between tastings? I wonder if a cheap vodka rinse would work?

Hey Daniel I think you need to get rid of your worst tasting whiskey into that “whiskey dumpster”. ;) would make for an interesting video. Also I would love to see a blind folded taste test of random whiskey and you two would have to guess which whiskey it is.

Hello Whiskey Vault, one question, have you ever tried the kentucky Fire Whiskey from Jim Beam? I have tried myself and it has a very special flavor, even with the cinnamon punching in the flavor, it lingers a pleasant sensation in the tongue, would you review it?

Hey guys I'm new to whisky and I always wonder what is up with chill filtering and why its lack thereof is considered better.

    • @canadianwhiskysmith6453
      @canadianwhiskysmith6453 6 ปีที่แล้ว

When a whisky isn't cold filtered, if you chill it (add stones or ice, etc) it goes cloudy. The chill filtering ensures this won't happen.
I'm not sure to what extent it does or doesn't affect flavour. I think it might also help mellow the alcohol aggression, but not sure.
Anything over a certain ABV won't be chill filtered, though I can't recall what the specific metric is and I don't feel like Googling right now...it might only be for Cask Strength, but for some reason 46% is stuck in my head.
One reason I can think of for not wanting the whisky to go cloudy when chilled is when serving cocktails.
I think the objection comes from people saying you're tampering with the whisky. So they wear it as a badge of honour that they don't do it...you're getting something closer to traditional methods.
