  • OC - Brick - Brush Fire - Mandalay Rd.
Around 6:50 PM Brick Township received a call for a Brush Fire off Mandalay Rd. First arriving engines sized the fire about 75/100ft.
The fire was creeping back into a denser woodline and they were worried that it was going to start rolling. NJFFS was dispatched B43 B34. Station 21,22 started to set up there deck guns and strech some hand lines, but since the fire had already burned into the woods they were not able to reach with the deck guns from the road. Brick Township FD command asked if could deploy the drone to see where the fire was going and currently burning and if the deck guns were even touching the fire. After putting the drone in the sky command was able to determine that the deck guns inface were not reaching the fire. Brick Township FD along with NJFFS B-43 came up with a plan to stop flowing water and to just burn the weeds and woods out that night. Deck guns and towers were taken down the fire slowly crept along the wood lines mostly dying. NJFFS started a back fire and burned out the woods setting decent little chunks at a time till it all burnt out. The cause of the fire is unknown. Structure protection was set up at every road along the fire due to the embers flyng overhead.

What it looks like is a cheap way to clear land for development! Hope the state fire marshal is on top of these fires.

A lot of NJ forests require fire. They were doing controlled burns starting in Feb through the end of march.

Way to hot for bunker gear at a brush fire. Nomex would be a good investment to keep them boys from over heating

@@m2hmghb I can see a city dept that way. I'm a chief for a rural dept that covers 118 square miles for our twp, so we use it. We have had a record number of fires here in PA, which state claims most are arson, I couldn't imagine having to climb our mts in bunkers.

@@johnbarrett3140 Thankfully the mountains aren't where these fires have been. Northern NJ has the mountains, the south is more sand and flat. Then you have the pine barrens - area of land that is barren of all but pine trees - and they need the fire to get the ground conditions right for seedlings. Be safe out there and good luck with catching the pieces of crap setting the fires.

Not a lot of snow. Not a draught yet, but it will be if we don't get rain. Several weeks of low humidity combined with winds led to it.

The whole northeast has been burning this week. But NJ and NY have been taking the brunt of it. Dry winters leave bad condition for brush fires

Using foam to expand the surface area of water and extend limited water supplies makes the dry fuels in the forest too wet to burn. And no I'm not referring to foam that has forever chemicals and PFAS in them. Environmentally safe Class A firefighting foam was introduced to by the Texas Forest Service in the 1980's with resounding success. Fire Department's need to step up their game and demand the cities they work for buy, train and apply Class A foam to combat wildland fires. State Farm, Allstate and Farmers insurance are all refusing to provide new homeowners insurance policies in the entire State of California. New Jersey and New York are the next States to fall if they don't start putting these fires out.
