    This 'race chip' works to a degree but is no where near what you can get with a proper remap as they are just boost pressure sensor interceptors. They also have no control over the fueling so rely on the engines protection features to stop it running too lean - the result is EGT protection can kick in and it runs very rich to try and compensate for too lean under full boost....this means that on first few runs you get a load of power but the power can fade as EGT protection will keep kicking in. Long and short of it is power gained from these things is usually inconsistent. I also worry about these things burning valves over time (again from intermittently running too lean).

      A diesel can not run to lean and won't get to high EGT from lean mixture.
      However those piggyback boxes are utter crap anyway.

      +Powerguru78 I was referring to petrol engines - of which this 'race chip' is available for. For the diesels it does seem to have some control over the fuel rail pressure sensor, but that's a poor way to control fueling. For petrol engines it has no control, their instructions also seem to indicate it doesn't even tap into the camshaft sensor for RPM measurement so on some petrol engines (if not all) it really is just a boost pressure sensor reading manipulator.

      You are risking very much by going to a chiptunning company and letting people programm your ECU. You people can read what chiptunnig does to your car after a while. I went to BMW Krasta Auto building and asked what do they think about chiptunning and they said that most of the engine's parts will much sooner become unusable and then u'll have to go fix your car for a lot of money. And there is an artical, where a BMW enginner explains, what happens after you chip your car (really bad). Wouldn't even consider it.

  • @AggressiveSharter
    @AggressiveSharter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +727

    Now that the chip is in, you should really, REALLY, remove the swirl flaps in the intake manifold (if it hasn't been done by a previous owner) before they come loose and go into the engine. It's a common and well-known weakness on multiple diesel engines from BMW (like the M57 in Gareth) and is the reason for multiple broken engines.
    Also, please remove the EGR-valve and buy an aftermarket downpipe. The downpipe should realease a horse with power (maybe even two) 😎
    Damn, this must be the longest comment I've ever written. I'm quite cool, obviously

Sure you won’t pick up as much horsepower as a turbo car but a tune for the most part is just about throwing more timing where it is safe to do so. It might not net you peak numbers necessarily but it’ll definitely help with area under the line

    Race Chip is rubbish. Tested one on a MK7 GTi some time back and the car actually lost power. I don't know if they are any better now but piggy back or ECU foolers rarely work, in fact they can be quite dangerous. The only plug and play system i would trust on a BMW is Burger Motorsports's JB4 or in your case JBD. These have been proven to make good safe power. Ideally you would just want to flash a proper map on to the ECU though.

    • @BrodeyDoverosx
      @BrodeyDoverosx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      All piggybacks fight the ECU. You will not be able to adjust the torque or cylinder pressure limiters. You are also not adjusting the AFR or timing, so stick with a proper flash tune.

    • @Mish93Will
      @Mish93Will 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Have no experience with them and have not heard much either. You should check out forums for people's experience of them. But if in doubt, i would say just go with a reputable tuner and get a proper custom map flashed on to your ECU.

    Its a shame you guys went for a piggyback box. It will fiddle with fuel injecting and throttle response will be way faster but you will still be limited to the original ecu torque, boost and injection maps, not to mention that over time the self adaptation of the car ecu will compensate the piggyback box overfuelling.
    So I challenge you guys for a proper review with dyno figures on install and after a week of trash driving (to give time to the ecu to adapt) and then do a proper ECU remap on a bespoked company and see the difference.

[ HP = ( Torque in nm x RPM ) / 5252 ], diesels generaly redline at around 5000 - 5500RPM and make peak torque at around 1500 - 2500 RPM, this is why even though they have more torque then petrol engines, they tend to make less power. This is also the reason why the huge freight trucks who redline at around 1500RPM seamingly make so little power while having huge torque numbers.

    Real-world case study: Tried RaceChip for an F30 328i N20. Threw codes and produced odd burning smell from under hood. There was a power bump but I was concerned about the side effects. Was returned for tweaking by reseller. Same result. Lost trust in the product. It seemed to be turning up the boost to produce power in an unsophisticated fashion. Binned it and went for an ECU tune, Bootmod3. No codes and no burning smell. Have gone from Stage 1 now to Stage 2 without complications.
    In conclusion, if you want refinement from your tune and perhaps better longevity, it’s an ECU tune not a piggy back. For me, it’s BM3 for the win...

    Had something similar to this chip box (I think it was called KCR Diesel) to try for free on my M57D25 E39. These boxes do make difference, but in my case it was pretty shitty. Yes, the car felt quicker and the throttle response was better, but other than that the engine had strangely more vibration and also fuel consumption has gotten from 8/100km to about 10.5/100km. So I guess these will never be as good as a proper dyno'ed remap

  • @matto2k9

There is a reason that the straight line acceleration test is the best way to visualize an increase in HP and Ft Lbs. Nothing has changed with the car other than the "tune" so a straight line or a dyno would have been a much better indication.

    1) seeing comparisons on a dyno for actual before/after figures would have made this more credible.
    2) the m3 you tested isn't stripped out, so why should we lose the interior in Gareth? It's no longer directly comparable to the m3.
    3) your mates thumb still has enough margin for error that your lap performances are also barely credible.
    4) for a show with a budget like yours I would expect far more accurate comparisons to individual mods.

I got taken out in a stripped out E46 track prepped car when I last picked up my car from being serviced and the difference was astonishing. CF doors and panels all round, roll cage, usual coilovers and BBK, but currently stock power on the unit. I swear this thing could easily hit 60 in well under 5 secs with a good launch. After taking the heavy seats and liners out ol' gareth will possibly have nearly another 3/4 of a sec to shave off that lap time, taking it well within a midges' nad off that stock E92 time! Faster cars are harder to drive fast around a track. Traction being one issue due to much more power. After your done with your 330 you should really invest a few days in the M3 idf the owner allows and you’ll see you can run fast then a 37.07. • @kvd1m
    @kvd1m 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Torque isn't that informative as power. Long story short, F1 cars (about 670Nm) and Yamaha R1 (100Nm) have ridiculously low torque and diesel trucks (3500Nm) have it insane. The reason is that for example that e46 diesel engine has the redline at 5000rpm and petrol at 6500rpm. So lets just say they have exactly the same top speed (65km/h) at 1st gear. That means that with every 1000rpm the diesel engine will accelerate 13km/h and the petrol only 10km/h. So the diesel engine is handicapped as the gear ratio for the same top speed has to be lower as the petrol engine. For an "average torque" of 650Nm on the wheels with a diesel engine, the car will accelerate exactly the same as an "average torque" of 650/6500*5000 = 500Nm on the wheels with a petrol.... More over the diesel is twice handicapped as it delivers the maximum torque between 2000 and 4000rpm meanwhile the petrol gives it almost constant in all the range of the rpms... So with diesel engine is sometimes better to shift at 4500rpm instead of 5000rpm just because the torque from 4500 to 5000rpm is ridiculously low. My e46 330CI (231hp and 300Nm) does stock 0-100km/h in 6,5 sec. Exactly the same as the tunned Gareth, but after 200km/h my stock 330CI will smash that diesel, as it will go on the high revs. and the diesel will loose power and torque and even his dignity

    • @codenamecordon
      @codenamecordon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kmn Dmt then explain to me, how did a civic type-R keep up with a modified 330dA up to ~180km/h and then start falling behind, and even more so as the speed went up past 200km/h?

    • @kvd1m
      @kvd1m 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I'm comparing petrol and diesel engines for the same type of car. If that type-R has more aggressive aerodinamycs or just less power, it will definitely lose agains the modified e46. If you compare 300hp diesel with 200hp petrol, the diesel will win. Also the type-R has less weight and less weight helps a lot on the start but not that much at high speed. At high speed you need power and aerodinamycs. Maybe that e46 was just more powerful and the type-R lighter. But my petrol e46 and the Gareth have more or less the same power, so in a drag race the petrol engine has advantige. If both cars have to pull a lorry, the diesel will do it better than the petrol, as the diesel has more torque

    Ive got one of the basic RaceChip models. Supposed to make +30bhp, and +50NM. Certainly gives the car a lot more mid range Torque. Don't think you can ever make a Diesel exciting to drive, but the extra Torque makes for swift overtaking. And it doesn't really seem to effect overall MPG at all.

    I'd love to see a dollar per second statistic at the end of these builds. Obviously it doesn't take fun into account, but it's interesting to see how much it costs to get a car X amount faster.

      considering the cost between a 90-series M car cost and a 1500 dollar m46 diesel, the cost is negligible. as in, you could probably build several of these cars in comparison to a 90sM

    Next time on Project E46: Alex strips Gareth forcefully, then proceeds to go inside him without consent. He firmly grips Gareth's stick, relentlessly moving it back and forth as he pushes Gareth further than he's ever been before.

    I think there is a lot of people bitching in these comments “why don’t you just buy an m3 e46” “not a rolling road though” etc, I think you’re missing the point, he’s trying to show you in a really simple way how much difference basic mods make, the stuff almost all Car guys have dabbled with or attempted on their own cars at some point. I think it’s a good laugh! Yes it’s not truly accurate but it’s a bit of fun.... and shows what difference each mods ROUGHLY make. Pretty down to earth guy, if it was a bean in a lab coat I’d have switched to another video/channel within 1 minute.
    Good work car throttle !

    Damn i cant wait till next week. I recon they should have pulled out all the weight on first episode so when the struts/springs were installed they could have been setup for the weight loss. This currently my fav series of videos.
