I had to go way out of my comfort zone yesterday and send “PILEUP PLS ONLY WD5?” Which seemed to get the job done. Couldn’t believe I went off script, sent something intelligible, and got the results I wanted. But it was the same deal, two stations doubling every time I tried to get the one whose partial call I had. Awesome video, thanks for posting these, they are GREAT practice for me and keep me motivated to get out there myself.
I’m just learning the alphabet. Please keep up these activation videos because it gives me a chance to try cw copy and i like your insight into a real qso
Great video. Love the 705! Yes, I like the 891, too, but the with the 705 I don’t need to bring a large battery and as long as I get a spot, I get good results with just 5 watts (depending on band conditions). Looking forward to your next video! 73
It worked wonders last week when I used my MTR-3B for an activation. That thing is hyper sensitive to phone interference. Toss it in the bag, and it immediately stops.
@@EvanK2EJT I saw you just roll through 40 and 20m. Was about to throw a call out from my mobile rig but you swapped up to 20 faster than I got there. Good luck on the bands today.
I swear there's one of those guys like at 20:00 at every other activation. I assume they can't actually hear me and just respond when they hear the question mark. Drives me nuts, especially on something like the X5105 that has bad audio. I like the faraday bag. I get phone interference on a few rigs but I don't usually have to move it too far away to clear it up. Any wire will pick it up. I consider it a reminder to put the thing away, but a faraday bag could be handy. Good tip.
The FT-891 does everything the IC-705 does, less the waterfall display, for nearly half the price. Oh yeah, also 100 watts if you need it. If you can live with a little bigger box, the FT-710 has all of that plus waterfall and tuner, for $300 to $400 less than the IC-705. --n1bs
That's true. I've never really liked the 891 personally. I've used it, and I wasn't a huge fan. The 710 is a great radio, but it's huge......then again I take my FTDX10 into the field on occasion and that's even bigger LOL
@@KY4CQ_HamRadio I was not really seeing the IC-705 as a hiking / summit radio. Evan says the same thing in the video, he has better options for the backpack operations. For the scenario as depicted in this video, I still think the FT-891 is a good alternative for a much lower price. I like to have the 100W capability, although I don't often use it. In my experience, QRP SSB is not fun for either side of the QSO.
@@n1bsbri eh. I’d say 60% of my SSB DX contacts were on less than 10 watts. If the bands are good, there is almost no difference in signal quality 5 watts and 100 watts. And most OPs on the other end won’t know you’re QRP unless you tell them in those situations
That particular chair is from Klymit, but there are LOTS of chairs that will get the job done in the $50-$75 range. I like that chair because it has a high back. When I backpack in, I either take a Big Agnes Skyline UL stool, an REI Flexlite air, or a Nemo Moonlite Elite.
@@EvanK2EJT I checked out the Klymit website and they were having a sale on some of the chairs for a very good price, so I ordered a couple. Thanks again for the tip. Hopefully I can budget for a table in the near future as well. Gotta do more activating!
Evan, I always pick up something new with your videos. As a new owner of the 705 without a chance to put it through its paces (or read the manual!) I saw you were able to send CQ by pushing the BKIN button, I believe? I haven't yet come across how to do that. I know I can do it by going into the memory keyer functions in the menus, but it appears you hit a physical button. Any suggestions where to find out how to do this? Thanks as always! de KC0DWZ [EDIT: As soon as I sent this I found it in the Advance Manual. Never mind... lol!]
I don't remember the exact sequence to set it up, but I can take a look when I get home and then give you a step by step. I actually picked that up from Aaron Bowman W4ARB. It lets use the memories while keeping whatever meters you have on screen.
@@EvanK2EJT Thanks. Even my edit is wrong as I have NOT found how to do it! lol! But that is what I am looking to do. Never saw it before and would like to utilize it. Thanks!

I’m not taking my 891 up to a summit though. The 705 would fit that bill and give me the 2 meter capability as well. 100 watts is overrated as well.
