as a 13 year old, I absolutely love this game. I saw the journey complete through to the end, and it was amazing. sure, clunky game mechanics, but the overall experience had an everlasting impact on me and shaped my expectations of epic fantastical rpgs
It's really interesting how many folks have fond memories of this one. I was surprised as I really wasn't too familiar with it.
@@Skycaptin5 it is truly a fantastic epic story. I read all the dialogue from all npcs… it had such a huge sense of scale because you had to use your imagination to fill in the blanks, as you did with all RPGs from this era. Summoner also has a beautiful musical score and I still believe this game holds up very well, despite the bugs it’s fun to play. The chain attack system is still very innovative
Many are complaining about this game and yes, it isn't that fun for modern standard, but it's the lore that's really pushing that game, even the sequel. Need to give it a chance, it's amazing.
yeah I was gonna say this game does not look like it's for me, but I did also grow up with ps2 games so it's not that it's old, it's that I never played it back in the day and now I'm too used to more recent games. Even for retro games they have to have a sort of modern appeal for me to really want to play them
Summoner 2 is superior in terms of combat, characters, combat and plot twists. Granted, S1 is noted to have a better story and of course open world.
@@IWillYeah we should respect both games. S2 would never be that interesting if S1 didn't build this lore and story.
I’m so happy this got a port!! I absolutely loved this game when it came out. I can’t tell you how many times I played this game, from beginning to end then started over again and still didn’t lose my interest in it.
Damm this game bring me back. You can also use the control pad when you attack to do chain attack. Thats why it keeps saying slow when you attack.
I hope this leads to summoner 2 getting a ps5 port as well.
I’m VERY shocked you havent covered fate seeker 2 on PS5 yet. It’s very much the sort of thing you’d usually cover (niche and obscure hidden gem)

Nope, unfortunately. Would've been great if S1 had action combat like they wanted for it, thankfully S2 introduced us to their version of ARPG.

@@IWillYeah i really like the action-oriented combat for summoner 2, but i also really like the traditional-oriented combat of summoner as well. i think this is one of the elements that makes playing both so compelling for me

What an odd game. I couldn’t get past the intro area but I was fascinated. Impressive for a 2006 game and I’m very happy with the premium games recently. Ghosthunter was another great release

question about a core mechanic:
does anybody know if the ps5 version has the permanent HP loss from having summons die (like the ps2 instruction booklet says)
or no permanent stat reduction (like the ps2 version's actual gameplay)
It should be exactly like how the game was back in the day. They don't change in-game stuff to my knowledge.
@@Skycaptin5 ya back in the day the pc and the ps version had different mechanics. thats why im asking.
edit: ps2 instruction booklet page 20, "it costs life to give life..."
which on pc this was true. a summon dieing permanently cost you the max HP it took to summon it.
but the mechanic doesnt actually exist on the ps2 version and dont lose max HP from having summons die.
@@tiamatnotrealname3084 I'm not knowledgeable of that setup outside of the fact that it's emulating the PS2 version so it'll be whatever that game was in this situation.
Random Question sorry, how to you manually save in this game again when playing on the ps5?
Like in-game or through PS Plus? The latter is pressing start and going to save
@@Skycaptin5 this! and you if want to save the original way press the triangle button then select "save" from the menu
It'll most likely never happen but GUN should get a PS5 port.

This game ran like garbage on the PS2. The sequel is a much better game imo.
Loved S2, it's party based combat, characters and variety of environments were great.
@@BasicSneedEducation i stopped playing it on ps2 back in 2004 because of the long load times. they hurt the pacing that bad for me. that said i'm now further than i ever got thanks to this ps5-enhanced emulated version that has whip-fast load times. also doesn't hurt that the frame rate is higher now

After watching a bit of the combat, I can’t imagine many wanting to slog thru this for anything more than to just “try it out then delete”. Of course, some randos will say “this game is amazing!!!”
Of ALL of the PS2 library out there, no idea how this got chosen to add tomPS5 😂
Straight bizarre.
It's a very interesting choice in my opinion, the more games they offer the better. From a modern lens I'm not sure too many will love this but it is sort of fascinating in terms of scale on that console at the time. Was definitely some throwback role playing.
@@Skycaptin5 of course, the more the better, I agree. But I mean, this specific game would never even be considered a top 100 PS2 game. If they planned on releasing 50 PS2 games a year, then sure. But when it’s just a handful, yeah idk.
Very odd choice imo. You should Drakan Ancient something to other I remember that being nice.
