    YEAH!!! Finally!!!! I started watching videos on this 2 months ago. Been trying every day to get that fry distortion. Today I was lying in bed and tried it... I guess since I was super relaxed lying down and throat was open naturally, I could make the sound effortlessly. Now that I know where it is engaged I can activate it at will.

    I stumbled upon fry screaming by pure chance and today I know how to fiddle with it better, low growls through fry are now my specialty, and the distortions through this method are by far my favorites due to the air management capacity they provide when singing and switching from distorted screams to clean vocals and such.
    You are very good in teaching this, by the way; very often vocal coaches will give only the technical pieces of advice and end up not talking much about the sensation you're supposed to feel or even search for when trying to learn it.

      I generally sing just to myself, friends and family since we share the same taste in music, but I'm not confident enough to get in a band or start recording my vocals. I guess that's the harder part, being confident

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, it turns out like vocals themselves are like a top of ice berg, there are more things that are improtant too, for example being self confident. It can be learnt like vocals too.
      I will tell You two things, first of all I am rather not very outgoing person, I am rather introvert but when i started to practice I knew i have to work on being more confident, more outgoing. I am still improving my stage presence and confindence because on some days I feel more energized, on some less and dont want to show off and "play star" and get attention of people on me etc.
      My first public performance was rough shit and i personally decided it to be.
      It was accoustic evening and You know, i didnt bring any guitar or soft song. I was there only with my voice and i did acapella growl with song from Death, I sung for a bis Godsmack and it was sick.
      People performed there like: "use somebody" with guitars,clean voices and suddenly some random guy got on the stage and started to growl the shit out from him xD It was the most challenging performance for me but after such crazy shit nothing really impressed me to the point i was like i will shit myself :D

    • @lammergeier5289
      @lammergeier5289 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Damn, that takes guts. It is kinda motivational too, as, you know, you didn't need more than pure skill to be engaging. I'll try to work on my confidence and maybe someday I'll be able to tell a similar story or simply not bust a sweat when on a stage. But yeah, that's something I guess anyone gotta tap into as well, you can't go anywhere without both of these qualities, so it is good to know people out there share the experience and have stories to tell about overcoming it

      Bands where we can hear fry scream are In This Moment (some really high pitched screams and sharp distortion), Arch Enemy (Angela Gossow used some mix of fry and false cord, lower and mid ranges sounds more like false cord, longer and higher screams sounds more like fry scream).
      False cord can be heard in Once Human and Jinjer (Tatiana is sometimes mixing false cord with fry on the higher screams).

    Damn I’m still killing my voice trying this. I sing for many years and have good control of my voice, but I can’t manage to find a good way to add rasp on my voice when I need without killing it. Also I’ve never seen someone explaining they don’t or can’t add vibrato when screaming. Our beloved Chester Bennington did it on this song for example th-cam.com/video/RfuzFRsE4qU/w-d-xo.html (3:37) and I don’t know how to replicate this style. (I have the pitch and vibrato but not the rasp...) Does your course could help me achieve this ? Thanks for the video !

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi, thanks for such extended comment!
      You know, sometimes huge experience can work agains us when we stick too much with our vocal habits.
      To add rasp to our voice while singing we need to balance the relax in our throat with the proper amount of the breath support. The sensation is like our throat is opened and releaxed, we are kind of "lazy" but at the same time we hit the notes with confidence and with the solid breath support.
      I recommend You to start the practice with a vocal fry - a very lazy, efortless yet at the same time distorted sound.
      Then You can switch between that vocal fry sound and a clean note like: clean sound - vocal fry (the breath suppport decreases, the sound becomes lazy) - clean sound again (the breath support increases).
      When the transition is smooth and efortless then You can try to mix those sounds together (yet try to achieve it in efortless manner, the sound can be quiet in the beginning and the rasp also can be pretty subtle but it will grow with the confidence and experience).
      Chester did in this 3:37 and further a nice belting with addition of the distortion - You can place vibrato in such sound too but the most important thing is the proper placement and technique. When it is correct You can play with adding various effects like vibrato etc.
      Yes, there are exercises for singing with the distortion in my vocal course.

      Hi, thank You! It sounds like mixture of fry scream and high pitched false cord (false cord is thicker and often mote breathy than fry scream which is sharper and more compressed).

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the link! If you mean the scream around 0:13, then I can tell for sure that it is a very high mix/ falsetto (depending on the system/ school that you follow), very similiar to what Rob Halford does in Judas Priest or the vocalist from Manowar.
      There are at least 2 tracks (but I bet there are more). The effect of layering is very powerful, personally I like it . I was really really happy when I finally learnt to sing that way (it took me 4 years because my voice is rather low) :D
      Beside the upper register, layering, there is also a vibrato and a compression which adds the slight raspiness to the sound making it sharper.

    • @SpaceNinja321
      @SpaceNinja321 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sibilaextremevocal Wow that's quite a lot of factors! Thanks for the great breakdown. :) So when you learned to sing that style, did you just focus on one area at a time or practice all those pieces together? I have a frustratingly low voice as well so I was curious how to access those registers.

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Firstly I tried to mimic the sound which wasn't too smart because I thought there is only 1 track of vocals. Beside that I didn't work on improving my skill to sing in the upper register using head voice and falsetto or mix but I tried to achieve such a high pitch like right away so I sounded like I was the singer from Bee Gees :D
      After a couple of attempts I realised that it's not going to work and then I've started to work on unlocking my head voice and falsetto, I played around with my voice making high pitched noises for fun. I also practiced along the piano trying to hit the notes and gradually extend my range.
      The most important foundation is to be able to sing using head voice, mix or falsetto in a comfortable way and then it's much easier to work on the vibrato and compression which are more like additional effects.
      In the beginning, 2 things were very helpful - making a sound like a puppy and creating a kind "woo-hoo" sound like from cartoons. It instantly unlocks the upper register.
      I expalin it with examples in the Q&A video around 20:50 (there are english captions):

    It gets confusing when you start adding a bit of true vocal tone or mix the techniques, which is very much possible, but can also be very stressful on your chords ;p

    • @sibilaextremevocal

      Every kind of vocals, including clean ones, can be stressful for the vocal folds and larynx overall.

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! It's great that you can do lows with the fry scream because the most of people have the opposite issue - they want to go low and they "can't".
      What really helps to place the fry scream higher is to work on higher registers like head voice and falsetto with the clean voice. We learn how to place our "normal" voice higher and to do it in almost efortless manner and then it's much easier to do the same with our fry scream.
      Here is a video about using falsetto for screaming, maybe it will be helpful too:

    How long does it takes to unlock my fry scream

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! It depends on at least a few factors. The first one is your overall experience with vocals (usually the more experienced you are and the better is your voice emission and technical awareness, the faster you start to get the fry scream). The second thing is if you are free from constrictions in the area of throat, larynx, jaw etc. If there are constrictions, then for the most of people it's crucial to get rid of them and then they are able to learn the proper fry and fry scream faster.
      Usually it takes 2-3 months of regular (and good technically) practice to learn the fry scream. Some people laern it faster, some need more patience (I've learnt it properly in a matter of almost a year but I complicated things because I learnt it firstly in an improper, harmful way in around few weeks and then worked on re-learning it which was not too smart but learnt me a lot about how voice and fry technique works. Still I recommend to do it the right way :D).

    I was kind of confused between how false cords and fry sound like compared to each other, and your demonstration was perfect.
    Sometimes i feel stuck because i'm trying to replicate fry scream stuff, but i do it using false cord (so it's bound to fail), without realizing it, and now i get it thanks to your video :)
    By the way : how would you characterize Frank Mullen's (Suffocation) growls ? False cords or fry ? I think it's false cords but i would love to hear your take on it.
    To me false cords in general sounds more rough, more crunch, while fry sounds more like high gain, more compressed, etc

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, I spent much time to observe and point out things that are specific to each of the techniques.
      What is not said in the video is that many people tend to mix them together which creates more possibilities for creating a totally new style (example is Randy from Lamb of God or Phil Anselmo).
      Indeed some people tend to use fry to get false cord growl or the opposite - to get a fry using false cord, sometimes it can result in creating mix but most of the times it ends with a fail. There's nothing wrong with mixing techniques when it sounds and feels good but it is also great to be aware of what we are using :D
      Frank Mullen sounds like he is using very forceful and guttural growl using mostly the false cord.
      Yes, fry creates much more "smooth" and sharp sound while false cord for the most of times is more rough and crunchy :D

      @sibilaextremevocal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! Fry scream volume depends on the experience (the more advanced vocalist you are, the easier it will be to produce a louder fry scream).
      Fry scream typical volume is a little bit higher than speaking voice (30-50% of max volume).
      Here is a recording comparing the vocal fry, fry scream and whisper (I recommend to not use a whisper, it puts too much pressure on the vocal folds, the compressed airflow reminds a whisper but is much more open and relaxed):

    Most thrash metal bands use false chords, right?

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends, many thrashmetal bands rely on yell scream combined with some addition of false cord on lower notes and with fry on higer ones.
      For example Slayer, Kreator is based mote on yelling with false cord, Sepultura is more "fryish" especially on Roots album bit early Sepultura has a lot of false cord too.
      Technique is not something really familiar with the most of thrash metal vocals so styles are pretty much mixed.
      Metallica has more fry raspy singing vocals mostly.

    Can you blend fry scream with false cord?

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some people tell that they can close their false vocal folds to a degree where they start to produce a fry (personally I can't do it so I don't know how exactly it works, for me it's still a fry but using false vocal folds).
      Some people can engage their false vocal folds while doing fry scream (I can do it), it's like you do a "normal" fry scream and your false vocal folds start to be active beside the true ones (during fry scream our vocal folds vibrate rapidly and chaotically, they are connected but without too much tension).
      Feel free to check out a video with examples of vocal fry scream, fry scram engaging false vocal folds, false chord scream and yell scream:

    what technic did chuck schuldiner use?

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, Chuck's vocals change from album to album so each of them deserves deeper insight (even vocals on one track from Death by Metal is quite different then vocals on debut Scream Bloody Gore).
      Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy sounds like gutturals done with higher chest voice and head voice (highest screams where done with falsetto).
      He pushed his throat pretty much and he even mentioned that in the interview about Leprosy album.
      Sounds like forced, guttural fry mixed with high pitched yell.
      Chuck was a tenor and fry scream is often easier to get with higher voices and registers but his vocals are not typical fry like Emperor because he was adding more of his natural voice to the sound.
      But it is still just a theory and I might be wrong.
      On Human album Chuck started to sound less guttural and he went into direction of yelling with pretty harsh, angry distortion. He developed such style on Individual Thought Patterns and Symbolic (it sounds like he wanted to make his vocals more "clean", less guttural, more emotional, something more than just death growl.
      The final album has similiar vocals to ones from Symbolic but Chuck switched to the higher register - head voice and falsetto which can be clearly heard on Painkiller cover, which is fuckin awesome by the way :D
      Chuck's vocals sounds like fry done with the intensity of false cord mixed with clean yelling that gone from guttural, dirty nasty sound to more clean, less guttural and more "human-like" voice filled with emotions and deeper message.
      Still I might be wrong, cheers!

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there are people able of doing both. For example I practice with one guy who learnt to do a really good false cord growl and in the meantime, on his own, he learnt how to do the inhale fry scream. It doesn't hurt him, but from what I know, inhales are not healthy in a longrun, because they create much more pressure and it's kind of "reversed" to what our voice box is constructed for.
      I also know people who are able to do only inhaled screams - high, low etc. They feel comfortable with that. Majority of them didn't learn how to do exhaled vocals. From 5 people who were able to do only inhales when they started to practice with me, only 2 learnt exhaled vocals and abandoned inhales for good.
      Shortly, yes, there are people who do both, but also there are people who can do only inhales, but in theory it's not the healthiest way of producing vocals (we will see how it goes in a practice in a matter of 10 years or so, how those people will be affected by their techniques).

      Hi, vocals in Architects (I mean mostly singing with the distortion and high pitched screaming) sound like a fry scream technique. The distortion is like a combination of fry with a loud, powerful and emotional manner of singing with some addition of a compression.
      Here is some recording from my student that is into similiar style of vocals, we are learning mostly how to belt, how to add compression to the voice and how to use fry both for singing and screaming:

      Spoko, ten growl masz taki brudny i paskudny, że brzmi jak wodospad ścieków czasem :D Timing jest do dopracowania, fakt, ale źle też nie jest.
      Jedyne sugestie jakie mogę Ci dać, jeśli chcesz to je wypróbuj, wiesz chcę tylko pomóc, to jeśli kawałek jest długi, a ten ma 9 minut (!) to przyda się info kiedy wchodzi wokal. Dodatkowo można wrzucić grafikę w choćby odrobinę lepszej jakości, ale najlepiej jest nagrać po prostu filmik, choćby telefonem (np. sam tak robię przez 99% czasu).
      Growle masz takie ściekowe, niskie i ogólnie bym wybrał taki kawałek, który do tego pasuje. Ew. z klimatów podobnych do tego co nagrałeś to polecam Insomnium. Może coś w stylu amon amarth gdzie mają niskie growle.
      Z brudniejszych rzeczy np. Autopsy, Cryptopsy, Grave Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus też spoko. No i krótsze kawałki niż 9 minut na początek :D
