I knew literally nothing about Hololive (except that they're Vtubers) going into Idol Showdown and I was prepared to be like "yep it's a kusoge alright" but I was presently surprised! I went from hesitating and just waiting until locals to touch the game to almost exclusively wanting to play it for a couple weeks! I never bothered with the in-game tutorial so I had a lot of fun discovering the game's mechanics and learning how to utilize them and found a couple different teams I like playing with. I even found one of my gameplans nerfed because it was too good (it really was, I deserved the nerf). Idol Showdown and TMNT x Justice League Turbo are amazing fan-made fighting games and both deserve to be played, whether you like the source material or not!
Hololive was supposed to be a virtual Japanese idol group created by the guy we call Yagoo. His dream was to have a idol group and he managed to find great talents but... What I like the most about Idol Showdown's recent success is that even FGC vets who have little to no knowledge or interest in hololive or vtubers have tried it and said that it's a very well made fighting game. It just goes to show how a good game can draw people in no matter what the subject material is.
As another resident of the crosssection of fandoms between both fighting games and vtubers, the level of respect for Hololive in this video is moving. Thanks for making this video.
Don't underestimate the number of Hololive fans also into fighting games. The opposite isn't as true, though. This is the perfect blend of Hololive references and fighting game references. The easy inputs but with traditional commands that give a bonus is right out of GBVS. The Super Chat cancels are HD cancels from KoF13. If Ayame had a double jump and air dash, she'd basically be a Melty character. Haven't seen a fighting game reference crossover this good since Kemono Friends Fight.
The fact that Ayame is that close to being from Melty Blood is kinda funny when you take into account that Suisei is the one with a Melty Blood-themed alternate colour scheme (referencing Sion Eltnam Atlasia).
On top of the stuff you said, look at the game from a more gameplay-focused perspective, the devs often listen to the community and several balance patches were released to adress several balance issues because at launch the game as the definition of the "modern era kusoge". Right now, just a few months after its release, the game is way more balanced than before and I can say for sure I recommend it.
At this point I think Hololive is becoming a memetic virus, that's consuming and combining with medía until talking about wathever you like and not talking about Hololive is going to be the a nigh impossible challenge.
I hardly keep up with Hololive or Vtubers, but as a more general idol fan and fan of the channel I enjoyed the video. I didn't know anything Kiryu Coco's importance. The talk about someone with a very loud personality pulling people together and pushing her company forward reminded me of Hello Project's Tsugunaga "Momochi" Momoko (...and tying this back to Hololive both Pekora and Aqua have talked about Momochi being an influence on them as idols)
Damn good video. Idol Showdown was the spark that pulled me back to playing fighting games after a 15+ year hiatus. It's crazy to see how the genre has evolved since living in a bubble for so long. I never predicted my love of Hololive would be the bait that hooked me back in. I like your character predictions too, though I think Moona will be the 2nd/3rd bonus character. All the fighters can't collab with themselves, nor can they interact with their virtual tour events/shops of themselves. And, like you pointed out, the fighting characters have song remixes on the stage. Pekora meets all those "requirements," and while Haachama does too, I think it's really weird that ID has so much presence in the game but Moona has a stage song remix and is almost nowhere else to be seen. Same reason I also think Cali will be a main cast character.
as a long time fan of hololive productions, thank you so much for making a comprehensive video like this. i was hoping someone would break everything down for people who are new to the game but curious about the actual hololive girls/holostars boys and references behind it all. thanks!
First time I ever managed to catch a premiere and watch it all the way through, but anyways - Goooood shit, dude. Always love seeing someone talk so passionately about a topic. And goddamn if Pekora is a damn trap character, I can only hear her laughter as she blows up people. Maybe it'll be like a Dan Hibiki situation, has the tech but is a bumbling fool with her tools (in her animations). May the legacy of the Legendary Dragon of Hololive live on. And it will, thanks to this game.
For anyone curious, Coco is technically still around, but under a new identity (that she owns) with a different, US-based idol agency. She's also still doing the things she's known for and still pushing the boundaries, including being one of the first big vtubers to "break" kayfabe and basically show her real face, which indirectly leads to her upcoming appearance in a couple of upcoming games from her favorite franchise in the future.
I'm just waiting for Calli to get released. Not only is she my favorite, but she seems like a character who would have huge high-damage normals and that's my preferred playstyle in fighting games
I really didn’t know even knew this game existed, I woukd troll my friends about this insanity. The look They give me would be amazing. Glad to see you talk about it.
So, for those who want to know a little bit more about the idol culture I strongly recommend watching or reading Oshi no Ko. Not only is one of the best manga/anime I've read/watch, but also it strongly critiques the idol industry.
Having brought up the very toxic communities around idols, I want to recommend Oshi no ko to anyone reading this comment. I've been watching it, and I just want to say that it covers some very serious topics about what idols, and even actors, have to go through. Other than that I can't really say much about exactly what it's about, as even beginning to talk about that brings up spoilers for the 1 1/2 hour episode one, but I can at least say that it is easily one of the best anime that I have seen. Also, I should mention that I'm watching the dub, so i'm only at episode 6, but I have at least had a friend tell me that it continues to be phenominal.
Despite having watched some footage of Kizuna Ai, I feel like I've been introduced (or reintroduced) to Vtubers by Koefficient, who was primarily a Blazblue and fighting game content creator until he publicly dove into the rabbit hole. I think Koefficient is one of the main reasons this game even has a player base. He is one of if not THE first content creator to bridge fighting games with Vtubers. If anything, this game was made specifically for him, as it's centered around VTubers (most of which are among his personal favorites) and has mechanics that are very similar to Blazblue. The game features a lot of Vtuber references, but you've glanced over how the game also has a lot of fighting game references. The most obvious ones are references to the Marvel Vs. Capcom series. X-potato is a reference to a Wolverine's Weapon X. Botan's Get To Da Choppa is a reference to Jin Saotome's Blodia Vulcan. And lastly, every single character's Cosplay 6 color pallet is a reference to an existing fighting game character.
I got into Hololive a few months ago, and Idol Showdown was revealed not long after that. I studied enough to get a fair amount of in-jorks from the game and I’m starting to revel in it. If there’s one suggestion I’d make, is that if extra “colors” were to be added, let the fans of the game make them too (and possibly add a couple of alt colors for the collabs too) …and maybe add air chains too, but that’s just me.
Also a few reads of characters I know about and how they relate to their personality Suisei: Suisei being a really appresing force when she gets to hit one good hit is really in character not only because of her murderous abilities in AMOGUS! And the winter game, but also how she doesn't seem to be that good in many games or abilities but when she's good she Comes on top of any social deduction game, is one of the best dancers in Hololive, beting for someone else in a Mario Kart tournament is betting for an underdog and she has beaten N°1 Tetris 99 player in the world and she will not hesitate to show her complete dominance when she has it. Korone: her close-quarters shoto for me it's brilliant because on one hand she does have the dog personality he already talked about but she also has said how she does boxing for a passtime wich may translate at prefering shorter ranges but also what he didn't mention is how she's mostly a retro streamer, and since most of the mechanics we associatte to gimmick fighter wouldn't come a lot of time after the retro games she focuses arround, it makes sense that she of all her companions would choose to play arround shoto basics instead of focusing on gimmicks like Gacha, summons, weird dashes or something like that. If someone wants to add to this feel free since I don't know much from the other half of the roaster and I'm really impressed of how much work went into translating and mashing the personality and lore of the talents into practical fighting game characters.
Coco's cartwheel command grab is perfectly delayed to catch people who are blocking too much. If you catch'm sleeping, hit'em with the GOOD MORNING MOTHER F******
as someone who loves fighting games, hololive, used to be obsessed with martial arts, studies animation at university and loves tabletop roleplaying games and gacha games... yes
I hope if Idol Showdown permits it, they add for example Vshojo members since all of them have fighting capabilities Imagine Kson vs Coco or Nazuna vs Rushia
There’s gonna be an upcoming fighting game made by Hyun’s Dojo (Studio Bidou specifically) called Stickfigurez. A platform fighter featuring popular stickfigures characters, such as ones from the Rock Hard Gladiators series and seemingly other popular stickfigure medias. (Ex. Henry Stickmin, Johnny Rocket Fingers, etc) (Note I’m only stating examples of Stickfigure Media, only 4 characters so far have been revealed and they are all from the RHG/Dojo Duels series.) I saw in your Hustle video that you wanted to review some stickfigure fighting games like Knockout (Fatal Arts: Reloaded is also a thing) and I wanted to share about this game aswell.
I had next to no knowledge of Hololive prior to watching this video, and to be honest, I still don't quite understand it even after watching. BUT I can tell a lot of passion went into this video, and it was enjoyable all the way through, so...liked!
Sadly, he's already done a video during the last one saying he was quitting the franchise. He could always change his mind, but his tone during it suggested otherwise.
First Koko / Kson is a bless and i hope her VA carer explodes aswell, second including sana aswell was a nice touch. On another hand i started watching your content years ago when you still made league content and while i understand that you prob don't want those vids to be on your channel, they're pretty much part of my greatest memories when i started the game and had alot of fun with my friends. Is there any chance you can upload them somewhere again ? Keep up the great work mate.
Using Idolm@ster footage instead of idol footage. I approve. I do wish we had a western release of the Idolm@ster games. I would have loved to play the Takane Shijou route.
Great video. I agree that Coco was incredibly influential deserves a lot of credit and I love that she is in the game, but I think a lot of the talents challenged idol culture. For instance, Matsuri and Marine have always shown a lot of "culture," Haachama made very unhinged content and Korone's yubi obsession is a reference to yakuza "finger shortening." Korone also used to host "facts of society's dark side, where she would explain dark criminal behavior as if she was explaining it to children. I heard Haachama had something to do with the creation of HoloEn. Also, a few other talents had the superpower "English" before HoloEn, the most fluent before Coco was Haachama. Subaru and Korone had "effort English" by forcing themselves to communicate more with their English fans and becoming better over time.
Is this channel even active.....fighting games renaissance is HAPPENING....you have not done videos on STREET FIGHTER 6......TEKKEN 8......or even the usual rant on MORTAL KOMBAT....what is going on?
Hey, not sure, but something might have happened with the audio. Getting this weird static in your voice, might need to check the mic settings. Otherwise, great video!
SugarPunch being a Hololive fan is a very surprising thing but a welcome one! 💙💙💙💙💙 Edit: it should be noted that Hololive already had a growing English speaking fanbase before Coco, mostly thanks to Clippers and the only Hololive member at the time with a decent grasp of English: Akai Haato, hence why Kiryu Coco and Haachama were always called Hololive EN Generation 0

Pekora "the war criminal"
Heh, happy you like it!
Also a few reads of characters I know about and how they relate to their personality
Suisei: Suisei being a really appresing force when she gets to hit one good hit is really in character not only because of her murderous abilities in AMOGUS!
If you catch'm sleeping, hit'em with the GOOD MORNING MOTHER F******
funny enough, when Korone played SF6 recently, her character of choice was a zoner (JP), lol
dont let this distract you from the fact that PEKORA BOUGHT A FUCKING MONKEY
as someone who loves fighting games, hololive, used to be obsessed with martial arts, studies animation at university and loves tabletop roleplaying games and gacha games... yes
bro literally just made a video gushing about a game about virtual youtubers and his addiction to them
(I also have an addiction)
TAKODACHIS RISE UP
WAH!
@@taloscal WAH!
Gura would be a cool fighting game character. Her playstyle would be Dante from UMvC3 but it's got sharks and all that.
This game satisfied my dream of being able to beat ass as Tokino Sora. The power of seiso triumphs over all!
This was a pleasant surprise.
This game is fun as hell. You can see how they take inspiration of marvel vs Capcom. And also playable on Linux
I hope if Idol Showdown permits it, they add for example Vshojo members since all of them have fighting capabilities
Imagine Kson vs Coco
or Nazuna vs Rushia
6:15 I can never fucking escape Umineko I swear to god
Honestly didn't know it had a substantial singleplayer component to it. This might be what actually gets me to download it.
this is the crossover I was waiting for
We will remember you forever, K- I mean coco
Man this channel really speaks to me we vibing to all the same stuff
There’s gonna be an upcoming fighting game made by Hyun’s Dojo (Studio Bidou specifically) called Stickfigurez. A platform fighter featuring popular stickfigures characters, such as ones from the Rock Hard Gladiators series and seemingly other popular stickfigure medias. (Ex. Henry Stickmin, Johnny Rocket Fingers, etc) (Note I’m only stating examples of Stickfigure Media, only 4 characters so far have been revealed and they are all from the RHG/Dojo Duels series.)
I saw in your Hustle video that you wanted to review some stickfigure fighting games like Knockout (Fatal Arts: Reloaded is also a thing) and I wanted to share about this game aswell.
I had next to no knowledge of Hololive prior to watching this video, and to be honest, I still don't quite understand it even after watching. BUT I can tell a lot of passion went into this video, and it was enjoyable all the way through, so...liked!
Ah, a fellow SSRB.
I only know Vtubers (Hololive and Nijisanji) through the clips. I was still excited to play.
I want a "Mortal Kombat 1 " impression video. Haha
Same. You know he's going to tear it a new hole, just like all the previous videos....
You should check out the mk1 gameplay, they’ve improved animations MASSIVELY, it’s an enormous glowup
I didn't think you would talk about IS. I'm glad you enjoyed the game and hololive too.
I appreciate the usage of Makoto footages 👍
Using Idolm@ster footage instead of idol footage. I approve. I do wish we had a western release of the Idolm@ster games. I would have loved to play the Takane Shijou route.
Oh god that list of things about Sugar makes me wonder if I am actually sugar and I dont know it. Particularly the Crippling XIV addiction lmao
Nice To see your videos again also nice, never thought i get To hear actual history of hololive
Coco was the only holo live vtuber i knew so she was the first character i played
Very appreciative of this Hololive breakdown. Never understood anything about it or where they came from before now
Great video.
When is style select coming back?
Love the video as a fan of both fighting games and vtubers!
Hey, not sure, but something might have happened with the audio. Getting this weird static in your voice, might need to check the mic settings. Otherwise, great video!
Seeing this game makes me wish a certain bartender was in it.
SugarPunch being a Hololive fan is a very surprising thing but a welcome one! 💙💙💙💙💙
Edit: it should be noted that Hololive already had a growing English speaking fanbase before Coco, mostly thanks to Clippers and the only Hololive member at the time with a decent grasp of English: Akai Haato, hence why Kiryu Coco and Haachama were always called Hololive EN Generation 0
A Makoto fan too? So based
Not sure if I got recommended this video from vtuber or my causal fgc consumption
as a Martial Artist AND V-Tuber enjoyer & streamer... i love this!
1:14 and Europe (Kiara)
i love this game and more importantly, this video
Wait, Pekora was supposed to be shy and timid in her profile? just lol
I guess that's only reserved to the real pekora😂
according to Marine, Peko is absolutely shy and timid irl, and has to be dragged out into public whenever the girls do things together
Good fighting game with good pixel art for free? You had me there mate.
As someone who's only knowledge of Hololive is Korone, Idol Showdown, Holocure and now this video makes me want to know more about the Hololive universe
Good Vid. 👍
Coco graduation is the most extravagant thing in vtuber history
Let's just say it: Free Hong Kong .
I hope Mori Calliope gets added to the roster!
i wish this game has more character, i would pay for them, mostly because i need my oshi in this
I'm so glad Korone can take our yubis with a combo!
didnt expect that you are falling into the rabbit but enjoy the stay
also cuz youre botan oshi dont forget to buy ticket for her gen concert
I'll give the game a try once I can channel my inner Konpeko.
Dragon girl grappler is pretty much up my alley
