    THIS IS AN OLDER VERSION OF THIS SKILL. 4YourCNA.org offers training videos, skills books, supply kits, practice tests and more! Learn how to perform Passive Range of Motion (ROM) to the patient's hip, knee and ankle using flexion/extension (up/down), abduction/adduction (side/side) and rotation (around) exercises to prevent muscle atrophy and joint immobility. This skill is one of the 21 testable skills on the Florida State CNA exam and is also used in RN and LPN training. Additional resources can be found at 4YourCNA.org.

    You will perform the actions outlined on the care plan for the patient. This skill outlines the three main actions that may be required when performing range of motion: flexion/extension (up/down), ab/adduction (side to side) and rotation (around). If the care plan orders flexion/extension and rotation, you would only perform those actions. Only perform the actions on the care plan. The care plan can ask you to perform any of these three actions, that is why all three are demonstrated.

    The explanation is very good teacher .. but I have a question . you have another video from five years ago. It is the same exercise for hip, knee and ankle. but in it is not performed the abduction exercise which is the correct one please

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Either way is appropriate for the exam. Be careful not to overextend when lifting the ankle off the bed, if you do so. By leaving the heel on the bed, it provides a natural barrier to overextending, reducing the possibility of accidental strain. Good luck!

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The knee is flexed (bent) during the first leg exercise. When the leg is lifted, the knee and the hip are both bent at right angles, this flexes both joints with one exercise. This is acceptable for the exam. Good luck!

      I'm in California so doing the exercises with the hip you bend the legs first then stretch it out

    In Florida the ankle needs to be supported from underneath.
    6 Support extremity to prevent heel friction against
    mattress during ROM exercises?

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There is no way to support the hip during that motion. The hip is not moving off the bed, the leg is. This is proper technique. Please like our facebook page.

    You only perform skills up to the point of pain or resistance. Please refer to the instructional videos and the video introductions for more info on this point. Thanks!

  • @4yourcna
    @4yourcna  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is not a testable point for the state exam. Since it is not required to raise the bed (and is a safety violation if you fail to lower it at the end of the skill) and not all beds are adjustable (home care and assisted living will often have regular beds), this skill has been demonstrated to cover a wider audience and the bed was not raised. Please like our facebook page.

    Can you please confirm that the State of Florida only requires you to perform the following two ROM Exercises in lieu of the six shown on the video (this is what the Checklist shows):
    1) Flexion/Extension - Climbing Stairs
    2) Dorsiflexion/Plantar Flexion - Stepping on a Gas Pedal

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kris Suneson These videos show every possible type of ROM exercise that can be assigned via the care plan. You are responsible for knowing all of these motions, even though only a few are assigned on the care plan for the exam, because any of these motions may be assigned in a clinical environment. This is why all of them are demonstrated. You are correct in that for the exam, your care plan will only require flexion/extension of the hip and knee and dorsiflexion/plantar flexion of the ankle. Always follow the care plan! :-) Best of luck!

    This is an old ROM..there's a new ROM skills on prometrics which is very easy.. its only flexion, extension, abduction, adduction and dorsiflexion 3 times each..

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      chimpanshane Actually, the new standards for Prometric testing for ROM is flexion/extension of the hip and knee (up and down like climbing stairs) and plantar flexion/dorsiflexion (up and down like stepping on a gas pedal) of the ankle. The care plan will specify 3 times each. Always follow the care plan.

    Do u need to wear gloves for this procedure?

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ridwan Dawodu No, there are no reasons to wear gloves when performing this skill for the exam (no potential body fluid, personal skin or non-intact skin exposure). Gloves are not necessary for this skill for the state exam. Thank you for your comment.

  • @laurasmith3411

    she turned the water on with her glove on she did not use a barrier

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need a barrier to turn the water on. Dirty hands (and gloves) can touch a dirty faucet all day long, but clean hands cannot (that's when you need a barrier). When you begin a skill you must wash your hands prior to touching the patient. Please go to 4yourcna.com/index.php/2017/07/31/do-you-need-a-barrier-to-turn-the-faucet-on/ for a complete answer to your question. Thank you!

    I would of raised the bed, make it easier on the back!

    • @4yourcna
      @4yourcna  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +FA Barragan You may raise the bed to a comfortable working height if you wish, but it is not a required step on the state exam, as all beds in all settings are not adjustable. If you do raise the bed, you MUST remember to lower it for the exam, as it becomes a fall hazard if the patient tries to get out of bed and the floor is not where they expect it to be. Since this is not a required step, it was not demonstrated on the video. Thanks for your comment!
