Id give anything to "crack the code" and master downpicking. I thought I was making progress a coupla months ago, having picked up the guitar again after a while. I never got the hang of downpicking in general, so I really wanted a goal in mind. But, I was gripping the pick too tightly, and I think I was picking to aggressively from the elbow. This resulted in bloody awful tendonitis in the forearm and around the outer elbow. Upon waking up each morning, it is so tight and flamed up. It settles after a few mins, but even just trying to play the guitar and riff about for a while results in tension. I need to rethink and relearn it again, from more a wrist oriented movement. Hopefully it will improve. This video is great.

Kyle, make sure you're stretching before you play... here's a video where Steve shows some stretching exercises you should check out:
      th-cam.com/video/J09-UlNDqZ8/w-d-xo.html
Sometimes a good way to treat tendonitis is to simply rest for a few days. Those tendons are strained and inflamed, and every time you flex them, they get strained some more. So it might be a good idea to just rest for a few days, or maybe just work on a different style of picking for a few days, one that doesn't make your tendonitis worse.
Tendonitis can get serious if you aren't careful, so be sure to stretch and give your muscles and tendons times to rest. And remember, if it gets too serious, see a doctor. :-)
Here's something to try, though, from my own experience... I think we are about the same age, I was born in 1980: I have played guitar on and off since I was about 14 or 15. I am 41 now.
When I was 38, I played bass in a two piece band for about a year. A combination of playing more often than I was used to plus not being used to playing bass led to pretty bad tendonitis in my left (fretting hand) forearm, on the inside part of my elbow.
Also playing acoustic guitar in my spare time made the pain unbearable, and I basically had to quit playing anything for a week or two.
When I started again, I figured something out: all my life, when sitting down to play, I would rest the guitar on my right thigh. But what I didn't notice was, holding the guitar in that position was putting my left arm in a slightly awkward position. And playing for long periods of time in that awkward position, I figured out, was a lot of what caused my tendonitis.
I started resting the guitar (and bass) on my left thigh, and while it felt weird playing like that at first, my tendonitis has not come back at all since then. My left arm is in a more natural position, and I can make chords comfortably with no pain.
So, pay close attention to how you play, and the position you're in when you play. There might be a small shift in position that could make a big difference with your tendonitis. :-)

@@stinemusiclessons Thanks a lot for the reply, and a brilliant, comprehensive, detailed passage of advice and recollectations.
I tried and messed about with the guitar a lot in my late teens, early 20s, and on and off since. Yet, it is not until the last couple of months that the tendonitis showed up from guitar playing.
With 'Master of Puppets" being the coveted world title of downpicking, I downpicked each nite to a metronome at slower speeds that, I initially thought I was getting the hang of. Alas, like I said, I believe I was working without much rest/ playing easier styles of riffing, to break up the routine. That, and a more forearm, finger driven approach inevitably torched the elbow.
Ive had a form of infammation in the forearms, elbow before- but that was a few years ago from weight training.
Thanks again for the words and advice! I really appreciate it and will take it all onboard.

So, 3 min / day, at a tempo I can hang with? Better to do this first or last when practicing?
