@@asharajbhar1176 From my own experience (and from talking with other people with HPD) we often want attention for our appearance. We go to great lengths to look good in order to receive attention for our appearance. Spending tons of money on clothes, makeup, cosmetic procedures. While we want attention for our appearance and we act flirtatious we don't actually intend or want the seduction to evolve into sexually charged touches and engagment. Look, but don't touch.
I think people with HPD use sexuality and flirtatiousness because sexuality is an easy and effective way to garner attention, but its not the sex we want. We just want to be seen. If we don't receive attention our mood crashes and we feel as though we don't exist. We need the attention like a car needs gas. We need to be seen in order to see ourselves.
Once I discovered there were other ways to receive attention and feel connected to people and the world sex and sexuality, appearing sexy became irrelevant. Now I find that just being a friend does it for me.

@@laerrus yeah, I also have diagnosed HPD, I do focus on my appearance a lot but I'm never flirtatious probably as I had in my environment the sentiment that a woman that actively flirts is "desperate" and "not hot" and I've found different ways to get attention as a teenager, mostly playing the victim and trying to improve my social status among other women mostly, now I'm a performer in my spare time as a hobby for the sake of that massive need for attention

    Histrionics are easy to spot in office settings. Here's what I've noticed;
    1. Short skirts and lots of cleavage daily.
    2. Dropping items right in front of men.
    3. Touching, rubbing up against, bumping into any man or lesbian.
    4. Loud talking or laughing and at least one incidence of leaving a room crying.
    5. Small talk consists of inappropriate sexual innuendo.
    6. Frequent trips to the washroom re-emerging with fresh make-up or new hairstyle.
    7. Rumors about dating co-workers.
    8. Not speaking to most female colleagues.
    9. Boyfriend(s) showing up at work unannounced and creating a scene.
    10. Work for temp agencies as they can't hold permanent employment and usually don't last long before they're placed elsewhere.

Thank you. Best description of this perplexing PD that I have encountered. I have personally experienced what the professor is describing to the letter T. HPD is by far the most dangerous variant of Cluster B if you happen to be a male that fell in love with one of these lizards. They flirt or exhibit flirtatious body language INDISCRIMINATELY, regardless if the man is attractive or not, regardless of the social context. Sometimes happened because we had a fight (she would cause extreme drama over trivial bullshit) and I thought she was trying to punish me via triangulation, other times under perfectly harmonious conditions between us. She had a fall out with many of her female friends, they accused her of flirting with their husbands. Ended up having only male "friends" and all of her ex's were in the picture. Also so true that they oscillate between other variants of cluster b. She also had ADHD, according to a german study, 30% of those diagnosed with ADHD met criteria for HPD. Of course she was a therapist on top of it. Cluster B therapists sounds like an oxymoron or a case of wolves guarding the sheep?

    • @tdesq.2463

They are quite likely to blindly waltz into very precarious situations. This is especially true for those who aren't too adept at recognizing a male with a lizard brain. I've had to intervene in one such situation that was hauntingly stuck in my face both of 'em. It was a while ago, but it still horrifies me ... obviously. In large part, because I'm the one who made the introduction ... for good and noble purposes. It was then that I realized just how disturbed this guy really is. I mean, this the kind of creep who'd literally follow your young son or daughter into a bathroom ... right in front of you. Basically, Kevin Spacey, but without the Hollywood actor and money part.
Sorry for all that. Still trying to process the whole horror show.

I have to admit, I thought all that was going wrong, as did my therapist, was that I am internally depressed. Maybe the analysing is different in Germany, or maybe it was because I am 18, but she never talked about these niches of disorders in relation to depression. Honestly I feel (sadly) very represented by this disorder. I have found myself in so bad situations because of this. While I was in a relationship, I felt less recognised, looked at and appreciated and there was a spark missing, maybe the attention of my boyfriend. While also dealing with body dysmorphia and self hatred, it was a nice feeling of men still recognising one, no matter how disgusting their motives were, but I was 15, and I just didn’t know better. After indulging in flirty actions, I felt recognised, I had what I wanted, but while realising, this is going to far, it was unable for me to abort the mission, because I was scared of him pointing out my flaws and ending up in a misogynistic manner towards me. I felt disgusting, but I wasn’t at peace with myself, especially not because I knew if you would have to explain yourself, there is a lot wrong with you. To be honest it worsened my Depression, I really don’t want to play the victim, but I was too blind to see how disgustingly men perceive women. My boyfriend wasn’t one of them, but because I couldn’t handle these situations and my mental disorder I thought it’s best for me to end things, also best for him, to outgrow these issues and to work on myself. While this happened, I was in the position of a damsel in distress, and men saw their role in helping out. I was open to them, I told them about my problems and self hatred and this ended up in them compensating my issues by saying my flaws are beautiful. Stupid me, who is already vulnerable because of the recently ended relationship of course flashes a gaze in order to maintain their attention and their desire for me. It was nice feeling and seeing that a man had been lusting for me and giving me this kind of attention, even though I didn’t want it from him, I just wanted the feeling of attention and recognition. After realising “my power” I was flabbergasted, also because I am not a beauty standard, the next thing I knew was, that another person was waiting, but I was too scared, shy, or maybe even too caught in the moment of enjoying the attention, to say anything about the other mans existence. But still I was not obliged to tell anyone about my flings, I owed them no loyalty. When I realised things were getting deeper, as stupid as it may sound, but also as this video underlines as a histrionic, you say deeper things and you mean them. All the words I said to them and all beautiful moments we shared without sexualisation were genuine from my side. As this video underlines, I never wanted sex with them, I felt put in the position, but I didn’t want to engage on sex, because of the trauma from the cheating story.
I am thankful for this video, because it shows me that there is more psychological damage and trauma or disfunction behind my personality. Sometimes I would wish that people would think deeper and more enlightened, but I guess that’s the way how society is, and that’s also the reason, why I think that people (including me) dealing with these disorders will never find their place in society and will be ostracised in some way.
People hate me now, without thinking about why things might have happened, and it just hurts, it makes me more depressed again and I never meant to hurt anyone. I just want my people to know that I am struggling with this, but I don’t know what to do :(

Nice insight. I had a histrionic girlfriend for quite some time. They really feel different to narcissists. They have a genuine side that I could even appreciate after weird stuff and a bad end to the relationship. Also as a person she was extremely active and productive.
I realized after experiencing some other b cluster types and reflected on some more dark abuse that histrionics might be extremely vulnerable to intended manipulation or acts that are designed to actively use them.

I had a college classmate who after ignoring me for 2 years decided that I am still in love with her after her boyfriend cheated on her and exploded in some very dramatic displays including singing something while I was passing by on the staircase or looking at me while holding her boyfriend’s hand and freeing her hand right away. She only spoke to me once in 3 years and after I reacted angrily to her behaviour became sullen and once even looked at me like a beaten dog. Within a few weeks she again ignored me completely like I did not even exist. In another 4 months she got pregnant with her cheating but very jealous boyfriend and looked even more crushed. Years later I found out that she had been smoking nonstop. She always looked at the ground when she walked and very rarely spoke. Is that histrionics? Or just being shy and overestimating intimacy, because her partner only appeared to mark his territory and even cheated on her.

I do think so, me personally was also acting this way, it’s a sign of insecurity and unhappiness. She is unhappy in her situation and seeks the good guy in you, these little exchanges are sparks of hope, the desire of attention and sexual recognition. But still she seeks the stability within her boyfriend and she forces herself to maintain a dead relationship, she compensates it with substances such as alcohol.
I feel bad for both of you, do you know if she is still alive?

@@scottsorangeslices She is still alive. I thought I would never see her again, but did see her 4 years ago accidentally. The only reason I noticed her (I was looking in a different direction), was because she laughed while passing by and I turned to see who is laughing. She stopped further down the street with her lady companion who kept looking at me and turning to her from time to time to tell her something while she had her back to me the whole time. By the way, the college days were in the mid-90s and this story cost me emotionally for decades. It was both destructive for the other and self-destructive for me as well. It cost me physically as well, especially after I relived everything years after it happened and ended up with an autoimmune disease that is still affecting me.

Dammit, i was trying to make a skillful and funny sexual allusion.
Ehm, avoid it at all cost. I short, a histrionic will make you feel special for hee princess status. Shell make you hunt her for a sex appeal.
In the end what theyre really doing is trying to shut you up, hurt you and all the while not (really) veing emotionally available.
They seem like a jackpot, but are everything but.
Keep away from "sexiness". That would be my rule - notwithstanding exceptions. A real woman will bw emotionally available, feminine rather than sexy and not manipulate but play. Its subtle, I admit, but a big difference in the end.

My mother in law is always saying very inappropriate things, for example she will talk about how she used to have sex with her husband who passed many years ago. It would be impossible to count the number of times her kids and I (her sons wife) have been sitting around the table chatting, and she suddenly asks about our sex lives, then say that she loves sex and misses having sex with their father… We are obviously all disgusted by the question and comments. She asked me once when I was alone with her, what is her sons penis like, does it feel good, and do I like it… I was literally in a state of shock… A most recent encounter was at the nursing home when her son went to pick her up from respite, and when he walked up to them she turned to one of the sisters who works there and asked “when was the last time we had sex?”. When the sister stood there in shock at the question, she replied “oh you know I’m just kidding”. She’s talked in the past about her doctor flirting with her. She apparently has strange me at her apartment at night sometimes. And she’s an elderly woman so her looks have long since abandoned her, but she is still obsessed with doing her hair and makeup and wearing provocative clothing. She once walked out into the front yard in the morning to get the mail in a sheer nighty that you could see right through, and she was naked… When confronted by her son who told her that the whole neighbourhood just saw you naked she replied “don’t be silly why would anyone want to look at me?”. Would you say these are histrionic traits?

I am looking for the symptom I read about just once, and I don’t remember where, that involves a woman becoming extremely maternal not necessarily with her own children. My sister has had all of the symptoms spoken of here, but as she ages she has had less sexual affairs and now becomes obsessed with other people’s children. She has not been able to have her own. So she will convince co workers, friends, to let her take their newborns overnight even. She usually loses interest as they get older but now she has been seen over and over with the same little girl who is now maybe 5 years old.

Reading the comments , I’m honestly surprised to see the amount of women saying they have histrionic. Not to sound racist at all , but most of the women admitting this are Caucasian women. I think it would be a lot harder for a black woman to admit to things like this would take for her to put her ego away. A lot of black women have this ego that they feel they don’t do any wrong at all and you can’t tell them anything. It’s sad as hell. Their response is always something along the lines of “ I’m not gonna let a man control me “ or “ You can’t tell me what to do etc “ it’s sad out here. Most women I run into are like this

It is mostly passed from generation to generation. The main cause is thought to be mainly the way parents breed children (and also the trait of psychopathy). According to one study the genetical predispositions for psychopathy often evolve (being moderated by the way the individual is raised) into either ASPD or HPD strongly depending on the sex of the individual - for women it tends to be HPD, for men - ASPD.

Constant attention seeking , narcissistic very , does no wrong, seeking attention with sexual behavior etc. I also noticed they all had anxiety. A very informative video, thank you. If I may add some speculation to this comment section, I would like to note that a young writer wrote the following about the Wunderkind Mask deployed by the narcissist to broadcast to the world that he is both lovable and vulnerable when he felt his False Self could be placed in the background: th-cam.com/video/AiTlg-Ehnr4/w-d-xo.html
"The narcissist hates adults and is repelled by them. In his mind, he is forever innocent and loveable."
"This phase over, the narcissist believes that his superiority is established, securing a constant flow of Narcissistic Supply and Narcissistic Accumulation. His False Self is satisfied and exits the scene. It will not reappear unless the supply is threatened.
It is the turn of the Wunderkind mask. Its goal is to allow the narcissist to establish some emotional involvement without suffering the results of an assured ultimate narcissistic injury or trauma. Again this underlying falsity, this infantilism, provoke rejection, the dismantling of the narcissist's social frameworks and groups, and the abandonment of the narcissist by friends and colleagues.
"Anticipating this painful and (potentially) life-threatening phase, the narcissist activates another mask: the Wunderkind mask. This mask does allow for emotions to infiltrate the narcissistic fortress while maintaining impenetrable and successful defences against emotional injury."
May I propose a hypothesis that marries these sentiments with your more recent videos on Cluster B "switching"? The Wunderkind Mask is in fact a histrionic self-state meant to capture love and affirmations of childlike vulnerability. In short, it captures the "true" desire of a sort-of Libidinal Ego and is closer to the core of the Narcissist. However, as you are already well-aware the wall of the False Self usually stops this process by instead focusing on pain avoidance.
As you've documented in the Narcissist, the False Self is the dominate defense mechanism, and others (including the histrionic self-state) are only allowed to wander as far as it allows. In the histrionic the process is inverted, the False Self defense mechanism is too weak to survive on its own (I believe due to a lack of a more psychotic "ideal ego" to act as an anchor for the False Self), and has instead been subjugated by, essentially, a Wunderkind Mask. In the Histrionic, The Wunderkind Mask has effectively enslaved the False Self as an extension to its will by having it act as a proxy. It is forced to prove itself deserving of love, having it imitate other's desires for this purpose. It then switches between "False Selves/Masks" depending on the company it keeps.
In short, in the Histrionic the False Self has no density (perhaps without the Ideal Ego), it has only a rough outline and is filled with the ego functions of others. This allows shallow emotions to "sneak" through the histrionic's weak False Self, albeit without those emotions seeming to stick to anything. Ultimately, the Histrionic ends up being a method actor, whereas the Narcissist is a classical actor.

I believe Vic’s question seeks to understand at a much deeper level the underlying psychodynamics of the person who find themself willing to engage in this type of activity. With the exception of a survey type “study“ I have yet to see anyone delve into this subject anymore than The most rudimentary effort. this scratching the surface amounts to describing the ocean is being wet.
