It also helped that it was Ushiwaka that asked him why here was there at all bc Ushiwaka never says things out of malice or dishonesty. So when he asked that it wasn't out of spite, he was genuinely asking what Hinata' plan was, which motivated Hinata to find a reason.
Takeda is the wisest man in the world. He understands him and Ukai should guide them to the right but also give those kids some space to think for themselves. He remembers they are 15-17 year old, growing kids. Such a man.
that shot of Hinata emerging from the storage room, holding a mop where we only see his back is such great foreshadowing of this arc and what Hinata ends up learning. it's the exact same shot when we were first introduced to nishinoya and we got his nickname "the guardian deity" in s1. they even sneak in a "double rolling thunder" as a throwaway joke :)) as in, "guardian deity" x 2.
I’ve been thinking it about it for quite some time that I could hear Adam talk for hours. Always brings a fresh perspective in a well articulated and calm manner while being playful and emotional when it’s due. Among all the Haikyuu reactors I’ve seen is the best one by far. Hope you have a nice day Adam!
9:20 A small but fun detail: back in season 3, during the third years' flashback, Daichi had vines wrapped around his feet as well in his first year. And one of the big parts of the montage in that flashback that followed? Daichi participating as a ball boy. Just one of several parallels between Daichi and Hinata in this series.
I already knew about the vines parallel but I'm struggling to think of any more between Daichi and Hinata, would you mind listing a couple more? I love the idea
@richardohanlon3036 Well, there are three that I can think of specifically. In season 1 episode 16, they show a flashback of Daichi in his junior high team, losing to a powerhouse school. He dives for a ball after a teammate's mistake, and they lose the point, but he pops up with a smile on his face, just like Hinata did back in the first episode in a very similar fashion. The other two parallels are spoilers: one from this season of the show in a Daichi-centric scene, and the other from the manga, which I won't even hint at.
Great reaction as always! As Adam mentioned, Hinata always manages to get people on his side. The first-year students from Shiratorizawa called him "Shoyo" right away (maybe on the 2nd day?), which is very rare in Japanese society, even though they are all first years. Nishinoya is the type of person who calls everyone by their first name, but this reflects his straightforward and friendly personality, anyway. At 13:30, Sarah watches Hinata like a gentle mother...so impressive. At 14:53, the vice principal worries about Hinata like a caring father. By the way, Nishinoya mistakenly memorized the 2-meter-tall guy's name as "Manzawa (10,000 streams)," but his name is "Hyakuzawa (100 streams)"... he multiplied by 100🤣
Ahhh the happiness in Adams eyes at the beginning "..we have another training arc.." great😆 Best thing of the episode was that it holds some promise, especially for Hinata, in terms of patience and insight. Hinata came in a situation that was unknown and new to him, he had hoped to take part in the training. Great part in the episode is the chat with Ukai and the sentence of him that Hinata shouldn´t underestimate the part of a ballboy. This and the appearance of Ushiwaka brings Hinata in the end of the episode to think a total new way, what can he learn if he isn´t part of the game and not on the court? What chance can he make out of that situtaion in which he is now? To come to this knowledge at the end is a big step for Hinata. Can´t wait for your next reaction next week.
I really like Ukai and Takeda’s dynamic, especially how it’s shown in this episode. Both lack something required for teaching these kids, one is not familiar with volleyball and the other is not familiar with teaching. They compliment each other so well and I’m so glad we get to see them grow along with the team.
The ever lasting feeling of “sense of identity”. Goes from teenagers to adulthood, to being old. The who am I? What am I doing? What can I do? What don’t ! “I” ! Want? For me atm am I a good husband? Am I a good dad? Am I being a good person? Who decides what I do is good enough? Do I wanna keep doing what I do for work as a career?
It’s really interesting how the changes as you move through life but at the same time there are anchors that if you can find within yourself provide anchors for all your decisions. What a great comment!
7:18 Coach Washijou say “keep you eyes on them” In Asia, many masters of the trade do not actually teach their students any techniques, but rather tell them to observe carefully, I think Coach Washijou is this type of coach
The video cuts some scenes out, but I think this is where Hinata accidentally let a ball roll near the net during spike practice, increasing the risk of the spiker rolling his ankle and injuring himself so Coach Washijo was mad because Hinata isn't doing his job as a ball boy.
I was a game day ball boy for my college’s women’s team. It was a ton of fun and it’s a real challenge to scoop up the balls during spiking drills. Fun fact: we were told to discretely give the enemy server their next ball slowly, and immediately for our team. To help momentum.
Always love watching these reactions. Wish the actual footage wasn't so transparent now though; guess it's copyright? It wasn't like that before, IIRC.
The copy right had become a huge issue. We are having to go back over the episodes 5-10 times trying to get them able to be posted. We are working to find a better solution.
We have been having a really tough time with the copyrights with season 4. We have been having to edit the episodes an extra 5-10 times trying to clear up the copyright. It’s been alot of work!
It's so exciting to see Adam catching up. This episode had a lot of the mental coaching, which I think Adam can totally vibe with. I really appreciated his insights. And such cute little moments from Tendo, Goshiki, Tanaka, and Yamagooch! Thanks for fun as always!
something i commented in the first sarah's watch and i'll say again, remember when washijou was yelling with goshiki at season 3 and what leon say about it.
As a teacher, I feel like when I watch anime I spend a big chunk of the time panicking about teaching/mentoring choices that characters make ("no, that's not tough love, it is reckless endangerment!"). But Takeda and Ukai make up for all of that with how thoughtful they are and how well they work together. I loved what Adam said about Ukai trying not to crush Hinata's spirit (and acknowledging losing sleep over students!), and I especially love Takeda's reminder that "we're not the only ones thinking".
Hinata really is that kid that regardless of how many questionable or embarrassing decisions he takes , you simply HAVE to give him credit for the commitment…but also could never be me
0:21 You know? many who watch any anime kind of hate training arcs, or at least most aren't as excited about them as with the action scenes, to the point some stories either skip them or montage through. But in Haikyuu the fandom looooves them, with reason, some even have one or two of the training arcs as their favourite arc overall, that's not common as far as I'm awear 7:22 if you recall, Reon told Goshiki that Washijo is harder on him because he has the most expectations for... soooo 15:02 Suuuch an important but underrated lesson 20:20 Because they aren't in a real match and the whole point of them being there is to help them. So now we get to see them be more themselves rather than opponents first people second. Tendou is veeeery nice and helpful, he is the only one that treats Ushijima absolutely like anyone else, because he doesn't like to descriminate like it was done to him 20:29 Remember in s1e2 Kageyama asked him if he ever saw a match in person, not just tv, and he said no. His lack of analysing the information was told since the begining, it wasn't just his lack of technique 22:10 here I take it as him genuinely wondering why he is "wasting" time, instead of practicing for nationals, something he, Ushijima, doesn't get to do, despite still practicing his hardest, because of Hinata. He could be practicing serves like everyone else but he is here picking balls, so his question is natural. And as we know, he is very blunt, so he *will* ask the rational question. And Hinata can't answer because he went there impulsively, he doesn't know what to do, so like you said, he needed to hear that question 25:05 Goshiki was geniunly surprised, there is a funny extra doodle panel in the manga, where he does the same thing to try and get what Hinata was doing, he is very competitive, so I feel he wanted anything that Hinata did to be better than him I've said this following point in the previous video but I really hope you can read my view on Washijo since he is such a complex character, especially for anime onlys (don't worry, no spoilers) And of course it doesn't mean you have to agree, it's just my take: Many get angry at Washijo, but I feel he made the best decision, first of all, he is right, why would he invite him to a camp of players that are invited precisely because they already have a lot of potential on their own? if not it would be a free camp for any first year that wants to go. Just because other players see him as a threat doesn't negate the fact that he truly has not much power without Kageyama (even Ukai knows this, since he takes Hinata out when Kageyama is out). Then, had he let him just play it would send the wrong message to the rest that didn't get invited, remember this is a mock camp, first time that they do it, they have to set the standar, if they let anyone in just because they took the bus without caring about the rules, then next year it would be a mess, not to mention that this year's first years that didn't get invited would feel horrible with the special treatment for Hinata. And lastly, Washijo could only be a ball boy in his time, everything he learned (to becaome the most succesful coach in the prefecture, and very succesful nationally) was from being a ball boy, so him putting Hinata in that position shouldn't be seen as him hating him and putting him in the worst place he could think of
Bitterness? in Washijo Sensei? no it couldn't be in some respects i am very impressed with Ukai and Washijo to allow Hinata to stick his nose. i always wonder where the line is for high school coaches to railroad development or allow them to figure it out on their own
Realistically, coaches and teams tend to favor kids who follow instructions. And since those adults also decide who gets to advance in their system, it's really easy for kids to get railroaded. I've even seen this complaint about the talent coming into the NBA, that the reason so many of the best players are European is because the USA kids all go through a predetermined rigid training system and basically get told what to do. They don't have to figure much out for themselves, and they don't have much chance to explore their own way of doing things.
This is something that is really interesting about North American sport. Most youth coaches like a very structured practice where everything flows well. In other countries there is more “play” at a young age which makes for “messy” training. The different approaches are really interesting to see.
Was the video even more transparent than normal? I’ve seen this all 4 times now but I can never tire of watching Haikyuu and noticed I couldn’t see anything at all in some portions
Don’t see much value without that setter… I’m suddenly aware of how incredible it is that Tobio is able to set 0th-speed spikes with all the eratic moves Hinata makes on the playfield. Without Kagayama, Hinata could run amuck and rarely get the ball.
22:10 ushijima said like that but its meaningfull like "u must to do something than do nothing here", and i think goshiki so upset too to seeing hinata struggling. goshiki still thought hinata better than him. Sarah need fix subtitle because my speaker broke little bit, thanksss
Since the first time I watched season 4, I could see from the first episode exactly where this arc was going to. But I still found it painfull and cringey hahah. I'm happy we're done with the first 2 episodes 😆😅

Thank you so much for the kind complement! That made made day. I appreciate you sharing that.
9:10 that's the same rooted symbolism that happened to Daichi right before he took initiative to start practicing after-hours with Suga and Asahi
Where he also was a ball boy!!! I noticed the same used of roots, but never thought that they were in the same place and had the same solution
I was hoping you guys noticed but Tanaka was practicing his jump serves 🏐

The Adam "Haikyuu" arc 🤣
Haikyuu training arcs really cemented my love for them. Seeing improvement slowly but surely is so inspiring.

穴原コーチは、トレーニングキャンプに自分の選手を招待していません。
鷲匠コーチは、穴原コーチの提案を受け入れて豪華な施設を開放して、白鳥沢の優秀な選手達を利用する事を許可します。
