Hestia is basically the one Olympian you can't say something bad about. No power struggles, no fucking up with mortals. I always liked the interpretation that she gave up her place as one of the 12 Olympians to Dyonisius to avoid conflict.
I just like that Hestia is one of those rarest of gods among any pantheons, the ones who don't fuck over humanity in any way, no cryptic lessons, no divine punishment, she is responsible for that feeling of comfort and safety when you are truly home. I'm an atheist, but I still can appreciate Hestia.

Prayer through work and act is the best form of worship. In the Bible there are many cases, an example being building a home for your family. Although it is for you and your family, you do it with the strength and belief of God making it more powerful for the believer.
Maybe cleaning the house was also a form of worship for her, sweep the hearth, sweep the floor, wash the dishes, clean dishes to serve offerings to goddesses and gods, major insult serving good food on a dirty dish?

@@ryan1000011 reminds me of something i heard (not sure on how factual it is but sounds reasonable) that there is some old recipe for concrete and no one could replicate it until they figured out water meant salt water as that was the bodies of water they had in abundance. They never thought to specify salt water because back then it was common sense but modern day took it to mean tap water should work as its still water.

It does not mean your viewpoint is without merit, but it doesn't seem to be the common understanding. It could be a beautiful way of looking at it though.
I'd say that while the wild stories of the other gods are what make mythology fun to explore, the gods and goddesses with minor roles within the surviving mythology are also interesting.
Hestia is my most favorite goddess besides Athena. I want to someday write about some of the classical myths and add more of how it affected Hestia. Specially her inside her father's stomach. The only thing I didn't know about her in this was the last myth where someone tried to be too much for her. I like to think Hestia's brothers adore her cause she was in a way the one who raised them (yeah even Poseidon) living inside of their dads stomach. Anyway. Yes! She basically raised them all and comforted all of her siblings. She was the first to eaten, so it was to be expected she should’ve became mean and irritable. Being a scared young girl who has gotten eaten by her father, but no. She chose to stay kind and help comfort her siblings as they might’ve done for her, had they taken her place. The Ancient Greeks' mythologies give us an insight on the mentality they had at that time. I find it very fascinating that the goddess of home & family, the goddess of marriage and the goddess of love are 3 different goddesses. They separated concepts that, to us, are intrinsically linked.
Lady Hestia is the Goddess of phila: the love of siblings, friends, parents. The love of family. She is the love of home, the Hearth. Hera is the Goddess of marriage; Aphrodite is the Goddess of romantic love (eros) and sexual passion.
I like how in reality the Hestia worship was one of the most important one from the era but no one speak about it, in ancient grec and rome every home had a holy fireplace just for her or her local analog, but today everyone just think about her as the underpreciouted one.
is really interesting that the practice of bringing fire from your previous city to your new home is really the same thing that some natives in brasil do when moving from a village to a new one: they pick torches or something to carry the coals from their sacred fire and light up a new one, the thing is so sacred that if the fire is put off they dont simply make fire with manmade methods but rather retrieve it from another sacred fire or from fire caused by lighting or something like that.

But when people finally wrote them down they had to choose between each island of Greece religious stories. Because when people do not contact each other for a long time they develop a different culture and since stories were passed down orally from the first Greek culture to the many spread out islands had different stories. No one wanted to give up their stories so they changed from text to text. :)

But Hestia barely gets any recognition in media and other sources, and that anime is actually her ONLY and MOST famous incarnation so far which ruins her reputation. Now, when I google “Hestia” images of the anime Hestia and information about the anime Hestia pops up. And that’s annoying and nothing but disgusting. If Hestia had gotten more widespread recognition, I wouldn’t mind. But she only has ONE. And that ONE takes precedence. Hestia is certainly one of the gods you hear the least about because most people these days mostly just remember the big stories. I find it very interesting to learn about her because she is very closely connected to everyday life in ancient Greece. The other gods may have all those grand stories but she is the one people would think of most often.

Probably the best interpretation is that, because Athena could not go against the rest of the (mostly male) gods, she instead gave Medusa her power and distorted her looks so that no man would ever rape her again. Sadly, women were too often vilified in Greek mythology, which leads to interpretations of the story that make Athena the villain, when what she was trying to do was protect her most loyal follower in a way that the others would condone. It's worth remembering that these myths were told during a time when victims of assault/rape were blamed and punished, and not the person who attacked them. (Something that still happens far too often today) What choice did Athena have? If she stood against the man who raped Medusa, she would face the wrath of the other gods, but if she did nothing, she would still face the wrath of the other gods. She did what she could, she gifted Medusa powers under the guise of a curse so that she would never again be a victim.

The story we know all too well about Medusa comes from Ovid, a Roman writer from the late BCE (56, iirc) and is considered to be, basically, fanfiction of Greek mythology. In actuality, Medusa was always a gorgon, a half-woman, half-snake. Because, you see, women were, as Madelyn pointed out, *highly* vilified. There's a reason why most shapeshifters are women. Additionally, in Ovid writing of the myth, it's heavily implied that Athena transformed Medusa into such to protect her from men. As the goddess couldn't do anything against Poseidon, the king of the sea. It's a big mess and shit is crazy.

This makes me more interested in how the Greeks actually worshiped their gods. I'd be interested in a spin off series, or an addendum to this one that visits the ancient holidays and how each god was honored. I know the Parthenon was dedicated to Athena, and I've heard there is a temple of Zeus. How did these buildings play into the lives of the average Greeks? Were they like churches or temples today? Did priests give sermons, or did they just tend to the shrines and let people worship however? What about feasts? Did everyone get together and potluck the whole thing, or was it put on by the king or the Temple? For instance, I had no idea that Hestia was so hugely important to the beginning and ends of peoples lives, homes, businesses, etc. Would Greeks get up in the morning and say prayers to each of the gods? Just one prayer for all of them? How often were sacrifices performed and what was sacrificed? I never really see anything like this covered. Do we know any this, or just the stories?

As a Mythology enthusiast, like the stories, but also like to know how they where worshiped, I like your channel because most of the time I learned something I didn´t knew, and I tell your research is a very good one, unlike other people who just give incomplete stories and never address any other versions, or imortant parts of those versions.
While the Greeks may not have given her much of a spotlight the Romans certainly did. They had temples dedicated to Vesta with a huge one in the city of Rome itself attended to by priestesses known as the Vestal Virgins who like their patron goddess were sworn to celibacy and confined to the temple where they looked after a sacred flame which like the one on Olympus was not allowed to go out. The Vestals were very powerful and influential and respected very highly by all sectors of Roman society.
But unlike Hestia, many would put in their years and go on to marriages in high positions. The Roman class they came from held it sort of like being débutantes.And that things essentially ran through a maternal line, as they held the right to the literal home and land., it was seen as a stepping stone...

It was a very different arrangement to the religious celibate orders that sprung up once Christianity took root, where celibacy became mandatory in convents for nuns and monks.

As a child, I was fascinated by Greek mythology and had a book that mentions Hestia and even then she was my favourite, I'm not sure why though...surely there are gods and goddesses much more interesting to the eyes of little children... I still love Hestia the most by the way.
Fun fact, the chief deity of the Scythians, Tabiti, was known to the Greeks as Hestia due to the deities having similar roles (fire goddesses in charge of hearth and home). While I do love the epic, scandalous, and plain crazy tales from Greek Myth, I do appreciate Hestia being the kind of sensible, consistent member of the family everyone can lean on. Considering all the morally questionable (if not just plain horrible) acts the Olympians have committed, it's refreshing to see one goddess who was truly kind and didn't stir up trouble for the sake of it.

Thanks for the great work, I like greek mythology a lot. And so I enjoy your videos a lot. I like Artemis and Apollon most. But I also like the titan sisters Selene and Eos a lot. Especially the storys around Eos getting herself sometimes a bit into trouble about being not careful enough, like the wish to grant her mortal lover an endless life, while Selene was the more wise one and also wished endless youth for her as well mortal lover, what Eos just forgot to mention. So it endet a little tragic for Eos and her lover. I also like the story about Eos getting punished by Hera for helping Zeus, so that she had to stalk all good looking young men and ogle them, so that she got ashamed about herself, that she turned red. And the tragic lost of her son, why she is crying every morning when riding accross the sky, what explains the dew on the fields. Maybe you can do a video dedicated to these two titan sisters. Maybe there are more stories about her that I just didn´t heard about yet.

The whole fire as weapon thing didnt come before civilizations. I think she was the personification of how fire used in the past, and how this fire was still useful in civilization after hunter gathering era, and the worship incidentally still continues until this day everytime human use oil from coconut or palm to lit fire and cook something
Hestia is understated and op. If she decided to leave Olympus the house of the gods would crumble beneath their feet, mortals would no longer be able to worship and all ambrosia would cease to exist. She also has the whole primordial goddess of fire thing going for her, so that's cool. She could dethrone Zeus via ultimatum, but she's too humble for that.
It's a bit more complicated than that, but you are essentially correct lol. Lady Hestia is the seat of worship and civic duty; Her throne is that holds civilization together. If She so desired, She could cut the connection between us and the Theoi. But hasn't, and never will. Because that's not who Kind Hestia is.
I like Hestia. I've always loved her modesty. She's not problematic or dramatic which is a good change of pace from most of the other gods and goddesses.

@@ryan1000011 reminds me of something i heard (not sure on how factual it is but sounds reasonable) that there is some old recipe for concrete and no one could replicate it until they figured out water meant salt water as that was the bodies of water they had in abundance.
They never thought to specify salt water because back then it was common sense but modern day took it to mean tap water should work as its still water.
As much as I enjoy the stories, I absolutely love learning how ancient peoples actually lived. So Hestia appeals to me very much.

I'd say that while the wild stories of the other gods are what make mythology fun to explore, the gods and goddesses with minor roles within the surviving mythology are also interesting.
Hestia is my most favorite goddess besides Athena. I want to someday write about some of the classical myths and add more of how it affected Hestia. Specially her inside her father's stomach.
The only thing I didn't know about her in this was the last myth where someone tried to be too much for her. I like to think Hestia's brothers adore her cause she was in a way the one who raised them (yeah even Poseidon) living inside of their dads stomach. Anyway.

Yes! She basically raised them all and comforted all of her siblings. She was the first to eaten, so it was to be expected she should’ve became mean and irritable. Being a scared young girl who has gotten eaten by her father, but no. She chose to stay kind and help comfort her siblings as they might’ve done for her, had they taken her place.

The Ancient Greeks' mythologies give us an insight on the mentality they had at that time. I find it very fascinating that the goddess of home & family, the goddess of marriage and the goddess of love are 3 different goddesses. They separated concepts that, to us, are intrinsically linked.
Lady Hestia is the Goddess of phila: the love of siblings, friends, parents. The love of family.
She is the love of home, the Hearth.
Hera is the Goddess of marriage; Aphrodite is the Goddess of romantic love (eros) and sexual passion.

I like how in reality the Hestia worship was one of the most important one from the era but no one speak about it, in ancient grec and rome every home had a holy fireplace just for her or her local analog, but today everyone just think about her as the underpreciouted one.

is really interesting that the practice of bringing fire from your previous city to your new home is really the same thing that some natives in brasil do when moving from a village to a new one: they pick torches or something to carry the coals from their sacred fire and light up a new one, the thing is so sacred that if the fire is put off they dont simply make fire with manmade methods but rather retrieve it from another sacred fire or from fire caused by lighting or something like that.

But when people finally wrote them down they had to choose between each island of Greece religious stories. Because when people do not contact each other for a long time they develop a different culture and since stories were passed down orally from the first Greek culture to the many spread out islands had different stories. No one wanted to give up their stories so they changed from text to text. :)

The homes had a heath at the middle of the house, for cooking and warmth. Hestia is actually the most important household deity, you always open and close your prayers and litanies with a prayer to Hestia. Next is obviously Zeus Ktisios (zeus of the house), agathodaemon (the benign spirit) and your ancestors. Hermes and Apollo are usually worshiped just outside the house, and Hecate at the door of the estate. Virgin goddesses are never accompanied by males in the ΒΩΜΟΣ(lacarium) so most common households generally had a statue of Hestia inside the house, since they didn't have many rooms and couldn't afford to devote an entire room for household worship.

I love anime and understand you. But Hestia barely gets any recognition in media and other sources, and that anime is actually her ONLY and MOST famous incarnation so far which ruins her reputation. Now, when I google “Hestia” images of the anime Hestia and information about the anime Hestia pops up. And that’s annoying and nothing but disgusting.

Hestia is certainly one of the gods you hear the least about because most people these days mostly just remember the big stories. I find it very interesting to learn about her because she is very closely connected to everyday life in ancient Greece. The other gods may have all those grand stories but she is the one people would think of most often.
Hestia, Ares, and Hermes are probably my favorites among the greek gods. Artemis, Athena, Demeter, and Haephestus get an honorable mention.

Probably the best interpretation is that, because Athena could not go against the rest of the (mostly male) gods, she instead gave Medusa her power and distorted her looks so that no man would ever rape her again.
Sadly, women were too often vilified in Greek mythology, which leads to interpretations of the story that make Athena the villain, when what she was trying to do was protect her most loyal follower in a way that the others would condone.
It's worth remembering that these myths were told during a time when victims of assault/rape were blamed and punished, and not the person who attacked them. (Something that still happens far too often today)
What choice did Athena have? If she stood against the man who raped Medusa, she would face the wrath of the other gods, but if she did nothing, she would still face the wrath of the other gods. She did what she could, she gifted Medusa powers under the guise of a curse so that she would never again be a victim.

The story we know all too well about Medusa comes from Ovid, a Roman writer from the late BCE (56, iirc) and is considered to be, basically, fanfiction of Greek mythology.
In actuality, Medusa was always a gorgon, a half-woman, half-snake. Because, you see, women were, as Madelyn pointed out, *highly* vilified. There's a reason why most shapeshifters are women.
Additionally, in Ovid writing of the myth, it's heavily implied that Athena transformed Medusa into such to protect her from men. As the goddess couldn't do anything against Poseidon, the king of the sea.
It's a big mess and shit is crazy.

This makes me more interested in how the Greeks actually worshiped their gods. I'd be interested in a spin off series, or an addendum to this one that visits the ancient holidays and how each god was honored. I know the Parthenon was dedicated to Athena, and I've heard there is a temple of Zeus. How did these buildings play into the lives of the average Greeks? Were they like churches or temples today? Did priests give sermons, or did they just tend to the shrines and let people worship however? What about feasts? Did everyone get together and potluck the whole thing, or was it put on by the king or the Temple?
For instance, I had no idea that Hestia was so hugely important to the beginning and ends of peoples lives, homes, businesses, etc. Would Greeks get up in the morning and say prayers to each of the gods? Just one prayer for all of them? How often were sacrifices performed and what was sacrificed? I never really see anything like this covered. Do we know any this, or just the stories?

While the Greeks may not have given her much of a spotlight the Romans certainly did. They had temples dedicated to Vesta with a huge one in the city of Rome itself attended to by priestesses known as the Vestal Virgins who like their patron goddess were sworn to celibacy and confined to the temple where they looked after a sacred flame which like the one on Olympus was not allowed to go out. The Vestals were very powerful and influential and respected very highly by all sectors of Roman society.
But unlike Hestia, many would put in their years and go on to marriages in high positions. The Roman class they came from held it sort of like being débutantes.And that things essentially ran through a maternal line, as they held the right to the literal home and land., it was seen as a stepping stone...

While I do love the epic, scandalous, and plain crazy tales from Greek Myth, I do appreciate Hestia being the kind of sensible, consistent member of the family everyone can lean on. Considering all the morally questionable (if not just plain horrible) acts the Olympians have committed, it's refreshing to see one goddess who was truly kind and didn't stir up trouble for the sake of it.

I think if you combine mythology and astrology you know what is the link, Hermes is born in that degrees and his mother on the opposite side, Hermes is the one with many talents but he is also the carrier of the staff with the snake on it, the connection to medicine and healing.

Thanks for the great work, I like greek mythology a lot. And so I enjoy your videos a lot. I like Artemis and Apollon most. But I also like the titan sisters Selene and Eos a lot. Especially the storys around Eos getting herself sometimes a bit into trouble about being not careful enough, like the wish to grant her mortal lover an endless life, while Selene was the more wise one and also wished endless youth for her as well mortal lover, what Eos just forgot to mention. So it endet a little tragic for Eos and her lover. I also like the story about Eos getting punished by Hera for helping Zeus, so that she had to stalk all good looking young men and ogle them, so that she got ashamed about herself, that she turned red. And the tragic lost of her son, why she is crying every morning when riding accross the sky, what explains the dew on the fields. Maybe you can do a video dedicated to these two titan sisters. Maybe there are more stories about her that I just didn´t heard about yet.

I think she was the personification of how fire used in the past, and how this fire was still useful in civilization after hunter gathering era, and the worship incidentally still continues until this day everytime human use oil from coconut or palm to lit fire and cook something

Hestia is understated and op. If she decided to leave Olympus the house of the gods would crumble beneath their feet, mortals would no longer be able to worship and all ambrosia would cease to exist. She also has the whole primordial goddess of fire thing going for her, so that's cool. She could dethrone Zeus via ultimatum, but she's too humble for that.
