1v1 veteran here; Sableye has always been a premiere mon in 1v1. Was banned in gen 8, actually. It's got a great variety of movesets that make it an effective choice. Mimikyu is another favorite of mine I would run, but that's been banned a while now too lol. Had an Umbreon, Haxorus (for mold breaker) and Mimikyu core that went hard.
Is mimikyu banned in gen9 as well?
@@dracomenace Sure is! Alongside a few other choice mons you wouldn't think anything of like Snorlax, Ogerpon-Cornerstone, and Necrozma. Mew, who is also banned, actually has a cool strat in transform and imprison. Sleep moves are also banned, before that happened in OU!
Real big controversy last gen. Sleep wars had been a thing in 1v1 for a while, gave mons with spore or yawn (like Snorlax) quite a bit of an advantage since you can't switch out and have to rely partially on RNG. I ran Yawn Protect Wish Foul Play Umbreon for a loooong time until the bans

I actually had throat chop on chein pao, even that would have KOed his oger
But when I was fighting him, I wasn't sure if throat chop or even icicle crash could OHKO him (underestimated my boy chien) So I opted for icicle hoping to fish for a flinch
Prankster Recover is too OP for 1v1. Damage reducing berries don't cover 4x weaknesses very well, except for Yache Berry Multiscale Dragonite. Use a Focus Sash instead.

Something I like that counters this is Glissor with toxic orb and fling. For things other than Sableye you can toxic them with the orb and for Sableye it will use trick and take the orb and get toxiced and you can fling the choice item away and kill it with acrobatics

Idea: Make a team with an obvious FEAR component, but have another mon on your team be a counter to FEAR counters (stamina for multi hitting moves, etc.) then have the last one be a decently strong Pokémon on its own to handle “regular” matches. Now, you have a perfect FEAR set!
A FEAR counter could be the use of sitrus berry
Also: Give your pokemon the choice item(maybe will work?)

I used to play G7 1v1 a lot, Specs Necrozma and Scarf Hoopa-U were my main menaces, but I experimented with lots of fun stuff

@@dracomenace You had a lot more options with a full dex and Choice locking wasn't as impactful on the meta because of Mega and Z being unable to be stolen
Z also breaks through taunt and encore which helps keep the meta from being too stally
Fun stuff pops up... Z-Magic Coat Stakataka gets a Spdef boost on priority, and can tank a Blast Burn from Charizard Y in the sun, Z-Psych up gives pokemon a full heal allowing things like Regigigas a chance to make a comeback midfight

Noob traps are hilarious. Also, I think fling is better than night shade in case you trick yourself another choice item.
99% of the time your opponent would just KO you on the turn you fling as sableye is a pretty frail mon to begin with
@@dracomenace even then, night shade is only there to speed up the process. If fling wins u one more matchup, I'd say it's worth it. Night shade is there to speed up the inevitable, but fling could win a couple more match ups.

you need to take a hit for encore to function so that's kinda risky because if you prankster encore on the first turn it will fail since hte opp won't have used any moves?
@@anon2447 since prankster move first you can come in on an attack that killed a teammate or on a set up sweeper or passive pokemon thats uses swords dance or something like protect, you encore if its a set up move or you can disable an attack move and next turn encore it. If the opponent stays itll struggle and take damage from rocky helmet and struggle itself doing about 33%. Works on banded mons too
