My first men’s dress shirt quilt is almost complete. I found three 2xl lavender colored shirts in different patterns right next to each other on a rack at Goodwill! Added a yard of white and quickly found a yard of the perfect grey polka dot as blender. It all came together so easily. Total serendipity. This quilt was just meant to be. Thank you so much for sharing your process.
I made two different blocks. One was a nine patch of half square triangles. The other block is a four patch surrounded by 2 1/2 inch strips. For the setting I alternated the two blocks and sashed and cornerstoned them. Pretty much made it up as I went along and it worked out well which is another indication that it was meant to be. 😂
Oh, my, you have a lot of projects going on at once! My brain can't handle that! My style is to make small projects that I can finish in a relatively short time. Keeps me from getting tired/bored with lengthy ones. Variety is my spice of quilting life! Thanks again for sharing all of your insights!
Thank you, Mary Jo! ❤️ And honestly, sometimes my brain can't handle it either! 😂 But I just keep "making a dent" and it somehow all eventually gets done! 🤓
Coming to you from the PNW, I really enjoyed listening to your thought process of each quilt design. I haven't read the other comments so I might repeat. Loved the confetti back idea. Brilliant! Two quilts in one. I'm not much of a border person either. Thanks for sharing your southern self and quilt adventures. Take care.
I don't know what you might have planned for the back of the Graduation Quilt, but there is a delightful minky with constellations that GLOW IN THE DARK!
Love the mini 😊quilt show this evening! Everything looks absolutely lovely. And don’t you just love the “two quilts” you get when you create an interesting backing?! Can’t wait to see them all completed. They’re all absolutely beautiful, including the one on the wall behind you. 👍🏼👍🏼❤️
I am so sorry to read this. I have that fear. I just skip the precuts and wash the yardage a few times in hot with color catchers, and then again in cold when the quilt is done. With a few color catchers.
Thank you, Shannon!❤ “mini quilt show”-maybe a new episodic video on this channel! 😂 (although I’ll have to get more done-ok maybe not!) and YES, I do love when an interesting pieced backing makes two quilts out of one!!🤩 it’s the best!!
The backing for the Magnolia quilt is perfect! 👌 It's good to go through our WIP's periodically and as a we're all makers here, it's fun to share them ♥ With your black fabrics for the Graduation quilt, keep in mind that black dye is generally brown or blue based, so to tie the blues in you'll want more blue based blacks and as others have mentioned, be careful when washing. A splash of vinegar might help too. ♥
Good reminder about the blue-blacks vs the brown-blacks! We may find ourselves having to incorporate both so that will be...interesting! 😂🤓😉 And yes, as for WIP's I need to do another deep dive into my white basket and figure out what are the next steps for each project! Always something to do in a quilter's life, right?! 😘
I like the graduation quilt idea, but here is a warning. I did a navy and white quilt that was ruined when it bled. Really heartbreaking and VERY obvious. It is hard to prewash precuts but you absolutely must, color catchers with the finished top are not enough. Also, it is hard to tell in advance which fabrics will bleed, even from the same manufacturer. Another advantage of using shirts- they are already washed.
THANK YOU, Genie! (And Jill, and Joan!) I needed that warning-otherwise I would have forged ahead and probably ended up with blue and black dye in all my cream squares! 😱 I can’t even imagine the disappointment you’ve spared me! 🤓 And this is why having a quilting community is so very important!❤ love to you all!🥰
This was a fun and interesting show! I really like the backing of your plaid quilt. That is a great way to do the blocks! I like the smaller corner triangles. You baby quilt turned out great. It looks like it will work for a small child’s bed. The fabric you chose at Joann’s is perfect! I think it would be really pretty to use some of it, plus some of your other front colors, on the back. Then it would be reversible. Good luck on the new graduation quilt! I do love the linen quilt!
Thank you, Sherry! ❤️ So much love and so many compliments in one comment---I feel the love, girl! 🥰(and sending my love back to you!) I think you might be right about the Joann fabric--now I'm won't be able to stop mulling over THAT backing! 😂
I made a memory quilt for my sister in law, using my mother in law tops and pants . I got the the inspiration from you and the magnolia pattern. Don’t know how to send you a picture, but it turned out beautiful !
Oh Maria, that is so wonderful! ❤️ I'm so glad it turned out beautifully! It makes me happy that you found inspiration here! 😊 Thank you for commenting to let me know--it means so much!
I love that idea for the quilt backing! I too am making a graduation quilt, with lots of dark blues (ours is shark themed. That was a fun shopping challenge)
I made my son a graduation quilt too! He loves it white with Thomas the tank engine fabric with White and the backing with Flannel red royal Stewart tartan pattern.
Cathy, I love all your projects, so creative and inspiring. I must confess I would be stressed out if I had that many projects on my "sewing table." I did buy the magnolia pattern and have made a block. Love it and plan to make more in the future. I did take your advise, took out all my fabrics, played with them, happily came up with a plan and have started working on a quilt for one of my grandsons. I am hoping to have at least three queen size quilts completed by Christmas. One is at the quilter, one is a block of the month project, and now my new idea. That is about my limit. Thank you for your videos, when I feel stuck they get me going.
Thank you, Wendy!❤ It does stress me out sometimes, but I just keep making a dent in them (because I love them all! Lol) and eventually they will get done!🤩 So glad to hear that you’ve enjoyed the Magnolia quilt pattern-it is a great one and fun to see come together! 🤓
The Magnolia quilt is going to be so pretty ! Also if you are looking for blenders for the Graduation quilt, maybe look for a navy and black grunge Moda had a great Navy grunge that has some black (iirc) in it. Might work - over all Grunge can do a lot of heavy lifting when blending. I was never a fan of grunge (it looked dirty and uneven to me lol) but I have used some I was given and it really played well with my other fabric choices. Love the fabric choice for the babyquilt! I have that same fabric with pink flowers that I used for my youngest daughter's quilt.
@@TheCatBirdQuilts Grunge fabric surprised me lol but in a good way. Tehre are so many color combinations which makes it great for a blender. Unless... you can find the "perfect ombre fabric" which is harder since you would be cutting it and not getting the full effect.
You are so inspiring! I love how you describe your trepidations (sp?) but then raise your chin and say "I've got this!" I thought you said you would put a link to Misty Doan's video that you using for a quilt back design. Yahoo for finding your final fabric for your baby quilt too 🎉🎉 Love the quilt top appearing on the wall behind you too 🤩 Strangely I’ve got something like that in my head too 🤔 It’s that Sunday Morning Quilt book inspiration 😃👏👏🇬🇧
The magnolia backing is absolutely perfect for that quilt top! I, too, feel the need to use those cut-off triangles for something. You hit a home run with this one.
Very interesting look at what's up! I've been very ill pretty much since Easter with a few breaks in between.l have some projects coming up that l'm anxious to get started and am missing " my happy place". At least l can be there vicariously through my TH-cam faves! ❤ l never thought there would be a time when l couldn't sew😢Enjoy all your projects.
Oh Giselle, I’m so sorry to hear that you aren’t well! It makes my heart hurt that you can’t sew right now-I’ll try to channel you when I’m able to put needle to fabric and maybe you’ll feel it! ❤
Loved today's video; it encourages me to keep going on all of my WIPs! I am eager to see the progress on the graduation quilt for "the Colorist," as I think it will be so striking! It occurred to me that you might find some of the black-blue blenders you're looking for in the black and dark blue shades of Grunge Basics by Moda. 💙🖤
Kristina, I hadn’t thought of the Grunge fabrics, that’s a great idea! And I’m thinking the graduation quilt will be striking too-and thank you! ❤ Also, keep going with your WIPs-I believe in you and you will be so satisfied when you get them done! 😘 (ps for some reason I put this reply as just a comment on this video. 🤦🏻♀️ Good grief.)
For the Magnolia Quilt, I really like the dark grey! It'll be a bit dark against the Navy binding, but I think it'll look stunning! Can't wait to see it!
Jinny Beyer wrote a book "Color Confidence for Quilters" that helps me find the blenders and bridge fabrics. It's out of print but pretty easy to find used. Also, she has the concept of sparkle fabrics, which will help with this quilt as well.
I love it all 😍. The salted caramel binding. The confetti backing. I was thinking I liked the lighter gray as the border but your right it a different shade and probably wouldn't look good. My husband would love your daughter's graduation quilt. He loves dark and stars. Looking forward to seeing what direction the orange peel quilt goes. And I love the baby quilt. Blue and yellow is one of my favorite color combinations. Your commentary and personality, with Paul's editing are why I always wake up early on Friday morning to watch your video before I go to work and why I'm always tired at work on Fridays 😂. Have a great week.
B! Sweetest comment EVAH! I went "AWW!" when I got to the part about you waking up early on Friday morning to watch our videos---that has to be the best compliment! 🥰 Thank you for all these kind words, for watching, for commenting, and for being a wonderful support to me as we share these videos with you! My cup is full. ❤️ (also, tell your husband he's not alone. Paul is the same! 😘)
I'm immediately struck by all the choices your daughter made. I'm wondering? Would some denim look cottons in that washed out black/gray help blend? There are REALLY dark blue denims too...but not sure you can get that look in a quilting cotton. I can see this 9 patch set on point....hummm? I wonder if that would make blending easier? I LOVE watching your thought process...I've really learned some important color lessons! THANKS I can not wait to see the entire quilt with the "Confetti" back! LOVE THAT IDEA...I'm DEFINITELY going to incorporate that into one of my future quilts.
Carol Lynn, that's a great thought--not sure I can get denim-look cottons but it opens up similar thoughts and I LOVE that! On point might make blending easier but I've gotten stymied on my last on point quilt so I'm a bit reluctant to tackle that right now! 😂 I'm so glad that you've enjoyed watching my thought process (on camera!) and that it's been helpful to you! It makes me feel so happy and rewarded---thank you for telling me! 🥰 And definitely use the confetti idea for one of your quilt backs --it was actually super fun to sew! ❤️
Wow, you have been a busy bee! I’m in awe of all your beautiful quilts! The curved pattern is coming along just fine. You’re very brave, I haven’t the confidence to attempt anything like that. Greetings from UK.
Busy indeed! And thank you! ❤ I just keep working on my projects and little by little they are coming together! Thankfully! 🤣 My husband says I’m fearless-but only about crafting things! 😂 I think you absolutely CAN do curved seams-and I bet you have the confidence, but you might have to dig deep for it. I believe in you!❤
As always, what a great and generous insight into the creative thought process of part-time quilters! I'm filing this video in my long term memory to pass it on to the next person asking me "How long does it take to make a quilt?" ❤
Thank you, Emilie! ❤ I do think in our fast-paced world and busy lives, it is an anomaly to spend months making a quilt! But it is that very thing that is so enriching about this craft-it is a break from the rush and stress! It’s easy, though, to get lured into thinking it should be a faster process than it really is! 😱🤓 The quilts we make are worth the wait though!!❤
I’m off to collect my daughter from University tomorrow and they have a great fabric store; we don’t have so many as you seem to have in the US so it’s a great treat. Top of my shopping list is backing fabric and binding for my temperature quilt. I was going to go with a single fabric backing, but now you’ve got me thinking about a confetti backing with a white button background (they have that Kaffe Fassett print in stock). I’m looking forward to seeing that backing video you mentioned. How are you going to make sure the top and bottom are square to each other and stay that way through the quilting process? - I have enough trouble getting them to stay still enough not to develop tucks! All your quilts are soooo pretty and I’m really impressed that you find the time to quilt, film, work and always have your rooms so neat and tidy. I find I have to abandon the housework to fit in time to sew after work. Thank heaven for working from home and not having to commute any more.
Julie, my "rooms" are NOT so neat and tidy!! The floors need vacuuming constantly, all flat surfaces need dusting, and I almost always need to declutter! 😱 But we're not going to show that on TH-cam, now are we?! 😘 If I showed you the pile of detritus on my dining room table while we are filming, you'd immediately feel better, although your opinion of me might decline some! 😂 Just know you're not alone in abandoning housework! (and Paul is a huge help and does much to keep our house together, for the record.) I'm so glad you're considering a confetti background---it was super fun to sew and make and those little triangles just give me joy! I think the Kaffe Fassett white button background would be SO awesome!! If you're on Instagram, you'll have to find me and send me photos when it's done! ❤️
The confetti backing is perfection!!!!! If you are going to use the darker fabric as a border on the back I would suggest taking the quilt and backing to a longarmer and have them baste it for you. They will be able to more easily centre the quilt on the back. A video on measuring and applying a border would be great! If you are looking for another quilt pattern, I would like to suggest La Fin du Monde by Libs Elliott. It loves scraps! And will rid you of any fear of curves! Always look forward to my morning coffee with the Martin family! XOX
Thank you, Anne! ❤ that’s probably wonderful advice, but I matched up a pattern front and back (on my first quilt!) so I’m hoping I can do it again! 🤓😘 I’ll have to check out that quilt pattern-you know I’m always looking out for good ones! 😊
Your confetti backing is genius, what a great idea! Did I miss the episode when you talked about the quilt on the back wall. It looks like a Sunday Morning quilt, love the colors.
Jill, I haven’t done a quilt video on it because it’s not technically a quilt (yet) but it IS from that Sunday morning quilt book! Good eyes good eyes! ❤ And THANK YOU about the confetti back! 🥰
What a great idea of using the caramel binding. Everything is very nice. Our time goes to fast. I will be waiting for next week.thank you again. God bless.
Fun confetti backing! Loved the reference to Misty from Missouri Star. Good one. Oh, Paul is doing overhead photo shots now! Have you read "The Secret Lives of Color" by Kassia St. Clair? I first heard of it when I got back to quilting from Pat Sloan's videos.
Susan, I haven’t read that book but now it looks like I’m gonna have to check it out!❤ We love the overhead cam-it gets the best detailed views of fabric!😍
I was intrigued by the con ferry back, I have a box of “corners” and would like to use them. Can you share with me the Missouri Star tutorial you mentioned, please. Mia
It would be helpful if you took a basic sewing and/or/quilting class so you can take some pressure off yourself when you have to make a decision. You will enjoy the process of sewing and quilting more with less stress.
Elizabeth, that could be lovely! I don’t think I’ll use sashing tho-something about keeping the lines of those orange peels melding into one another is very appealing to me!
I have used linen cotton blends very very happily. Best qualities of both coming together. I’ve used a 50/50 and a mostly cotton with a bit of linen. Both were quite lovely.
Cindy, I'm not using someone else's pattern---I just figured I'd make the orange peels and sew them together (using the template from the Copihue quilt by Cotton + Joy.) So....🤷🏻♀️ Happy to share it with you when I'm done though! 🥰
I don't really---I just use what we use for my family's laundry, which is scent-free. I do usually add at least a cup of vinegar which helps out with smells and stains. Sometimes Oxyclean powder if I want to whiten up white shirts from the thrift store. And no, I don't use fabric softener. They won't be as soft out of the washer and dryer as they are when you get them (especially if they were dry-cleaned, had a coating on them, or if you use vinegar) but they soften up nicely after being sewn into a quilt and washed and dried! 🤓👍🏻
I found a piece of white fabric in my stash that has a label that says cotton polyester it doesn't give percentages you are always shying away from cotton polyester can I use this in a quilt? I am really going to miss you when you move to the other program.
Yes you can use it but it won’t crease well if that is important for your pattern, and it won’t shrink any of you love the crinkle when it’s all finished.
Darla, nothing will change here on TH-cam--I'll be doing weekly videos just as I have been! (so you won't have to miss me! 😘) Jennifer did a great job answering your question, and I concur! Also if you need it for a long stretch of fabric, be sure and use pins because it cotton-poly crawls terribly under the sewing needle!
Binding - love the brown! th-cam.com/video/ifwIagF90F0/w-d-xo.html The quilt behind Michelle & the last one that she talks about in this video, use those off cut triangles. Mine are in my crazy patch scraps bag - invariably, I need "just a bit" on a corner, so they come in handy there. checkerboard - 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I'm ready to start mine too. (almost) Take a look at chalk & charcoal by Jennifer Sampou for Robert Kaufman, color Midnight especially may be the bridge, (I bought teal & midnight & the darks in other colors because I want all the darks.) BLACK - just like when you were playing with grays & I mentioned the wide variance, Its so true with black too, because most are just a dark gray, so they also have cool & warm undertones.
Thank you, thank you and thank you! ❤ (I think I saw chalk and charcoal fabrics when I was perusing a fabric website the other day-I will look again!) And yes totally agree about black fabric! 🤓👍🏻

I did actually decide on the dark fabric so I guess we'll see! And thank you! ❤️
Jinny Beyer wrote a book "Color Confidence for Quilters" that helps me find the blenders and bridge fabrics. It's out of print but pretty easy to find used. Also, she has the concept of sparkle fabrics, which will help with this quilt as well.
Thank you, Lucile! I will check it out!
Lovely project and a Hip Hip Hooray for all of your progress 🎉
Thank you, Adrienne!❤ I receive that Hip Hip Hooray! 😘
Stellar captions this video
The backing for your quilt is absolutely BRILLIANT. Love love it❤
Thanks Brenda!! I’m ready to see it all done! 🤓😘
Love, love, love your triangle confetti backing!
Thank you, Susan! ❤ it’s turning out as I imagined and that makes me happy!😊
THANKS
I can not wait to see the entire quilt with the "Confetti" back!
I'm so glad that you've enjoyed watching my thought process (on camera!) and that it's been helpful to you!
Thankfully! 🤣
My husband says I’m fearless-but only about crafting things! 😂
I think you absolutely CAN do curved seams-and I bet you have the confidence, but you might have to dig deep for it. I believe in you!❤
You are wonderful!!! Sorry, I missed this video
Thank you! And you didn’t miss it-you just watched it late! 😊
(and Paul is a huge help and does much to keep our house together, for the record.)
I'm so glad you're considering a confetti background---it was super fun to sew and make and those little triangles just give me joy!
I’ll have to check out that quilt pattern-you know I’m always looking out for good ones! 😊
I love the backing for the madras plaid quilt! I love the white space!
Thank you, Sophia!❤
The triangle backing is just what you needed 😃 Love it 🥰👏👏🇬🇧
Thank you, Glynis! 😊 I’m super excited about it! 🥰
Love your choice of backing. Now it is reversible.
Thank you! ❤ right?!? I love reversible!
And THANK YOU about the confetti back! 🥰
The blue bloom fabric I made a 3 color carpenters block out of. It turned out stunning. I also had enough to back it. So it became reversible.
Oh Melanie, I bet that WAS stunning! 🤩😍 Glad to know I’m not the only one who loved that fabric!❤
What a great idea of using the caramel binding. Everything is very nice. Our time goes to fast. I will be waiting for next week.thank you again. God bless.
Thank you, Pam! ❤ and yes, it does!
@@TheCatBirdQuilts have a great weekend. 👍
@@pammeinzer6757 you too!! 😘
They're all coming along so beautifully!
Girl. Little by little! 🤞🏻 🙏🏻 😂❤
thankyou for sharing your thought processes - it really helps with my learning journey - mihi aroha
Aww! Thank you for watching, Zog! and mihi aroha to you! 😘
Fun confetti backing! Loved the reference to Misty from Missouri Star. Good one. Oh, Paul is doing overhead photo shots now! Have you read
"The Secret Lives of Color" by Kassia St. Clair? I first heard of it when I got back to quilting from Pat Sloan's videos.
Susan, I haven’t read that book but now it looks like I’m gonna have to check it out!❤ We love the overhead cam-it gets the best detailed views of fabric!😍
👏 love the rainbow of color. Very cheerful! 💞
Thank you, Cyndi! It is so vibrant and happy in person!❤
I was intrigued by the con ferry back, I have a box of “corners” and would like to use them. Can you share with me the Missouri Star tutorial you mentioned, please.

Enjoyed watching x, always learning x
Thank you, Karon! ❤
It would be helpful if you took a basic sewing and/or/quilting class so you can take some pressure off yourself when you have to make a decision. You will enjoy the process of sewing and quilting more with less stress.
What about putting the color in your Sashing in order to highlight your linen block units? 🤔
Elizabeth, that could be lovely! I don’t think I’ll use sashing tho-something about keeping the lines of those orange peels melding into one another is very appealing to me!
I found a shirt that was part linen and part cotton. Is that a good fabric? What is the percentage of linen I should look for?
I have used linen cotton blends very very happily. Best qualities of both coming together. I’ve used a 50/50 and a mostly cotton with a bit of linen. Both were quite lovely.
Elaine, I agree with Jennifer’s comment down the line! Any amount of linen will work beautifully! And linen/cotton blends are wonderful!❤
Thanks for sharing
Thanks, Cynthia!!
What is the name of the pattern for the wedding quilt?
Cindy, I'm not using someone else's pattern---I just figured I'd make the orange peels and sew them together (using the template from the Copihue quilt by Cotton + Joy.) So....🤷🏻♀️ Happy to share it with you when I'm done though! 🥰
When you wash your thrift store finds - do you have a specific detergent that you use and do you use fabric softener?
I don't really---I just use what we use for my family's laundry, which is scent-free. I do usually add at least a cup of vinegar which helps out with smells and stains. Sometimes Oxyclean powder if I want to whiten up white shirts from the thrift store. And no, I don't use fabric softener. They won't be as soft out of the washer and dryer as they are when you get them (especially if they were dry-cleaned, had a coating on them, or if you use vinegar) but they soften up nicely after being sewn into a quilt and washed and dried! 🤓👍🏻
How do I share a picture of a quilt that I made from shirts from son in law for you?
Lois, you’d have to find me on Facebook or Instagram and you can send me a message there!
And Darla she’s still going to be right here!
@@TheCatBirdQuilts So glad to hear you will still be on TH-cam. Love your videos especially when you go shopping.!
What are “whips”?
WIPs: Works In Progress. 😊
❤
All the meaning in one emoji. I love it, DiAnn! 🥰😘
Binding - love the brown!
th-cam.com/video/ifwIagF90F0/w-d-xo.html The quilt behind Michelle & the last one that she talks about in this video, use those off cut triangles.
Mine are in my crazy patch scraps bag - invariably, I need "just a bit" on a corner, so they come in handy there.
checkerboard -
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I'm ready to start mine too. (almost)
Take a look at chalk & charcoal by Jennifer Sampou for Robert Kaufman, color Midnight especially may be the bridge, (I bought teal & midnight & the darks in other colors because I want all the darks.)
BLACK - just like when you were playing with grays & I mentioned the wide variance, Its so true with black too, because most are just a dark gray, so they also have cool & warm undertones.
Thank you, thank you and thank you! ❤ (I think I saw chalk and charcoal fabrics when I was perusing a fabric website the other day-I will look again!)
And yes totally agree about black fabric! 🤓👍🏻
quit picking' at the threads!
I know I know! I can’t help it! 😱
You have apologized for picking, but just to let you know, we can't see anything. It is very distracting from what you are saying. Maybe it's just me.
