Props to the engineers who made those buildings in Japan! They stood strong
No s*** right.
New building America today falls apart like a house of toothpicks.
Unless it's younger than 1960 it's probably made out of cheap material.
That's what happens when you use particle board instead of plywood.

7.1 and minimal damage. Only in Japan. This would cause catastrophic destruction in other countries.
So true
Japan has good engineers. Toyota, Nissan and Mazda come from Japan
@@MightyCats2011 ^ Good engineers, and importantly, *regulations* that make sure they make better use of their talents. Even places with great engineers can be rocked hard by an earthquake if people are using the lack of strong regulations to weasel out of paying for safe constructions.
Buildings in Japan are built on the assumption that earthquakes will occur. Based on the law.
Even here in the US. We had an earthquake here in DC 5.9 and it did a lot of damage because we’ve never had an earthquake and nothing is built for them. So if we ever had a 7+ we would all die.
Hey, NBC News. Don't you think showing a photo the 2011 earthquake as the thumbnail for today's earthquake news rather deceptive???
At a minimum it is lazy and embarrassing
Yes it took me awhile to see thru it

@@hollyjolly2066 Curious though who you are praying to? If it is to an all powerful god wasn't it their decision to create the earthquake? Do they not have a plan?
MISLEADING THUMBNAIL! That is NOT the damage from the 7.1 Earthquake. That is from the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami.
"TOKYO (Reuters) -An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 hit southwestern Japan on Thursday, triggering tsunami advisories, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said, but there were no immediate signs of major damage."
yeah
Because they built their buildings for it and minimizes the damage. If it's on another country, thousands will die and surely lot of damages will happen.
Some people put any picture they have, to fool the fools. Works almost every time. Pitiful manipulations. Thank you for noticing !
Thumbs down on the video for using a screenshot from old footage as the thumbnail.
Totally agree. This looks like a shot of the result of the nuclear bombs dropped, really insensitive to use incorrect shots. TH-cam is getting worse for spreading false news details. Good source for information, but dont fall foul to this kind of thing.

Poor Japan. They always get really bad earthquakes. Prayers for all the Japanese people.

Awwww ❤️ Bless your heart my sister from Mali!? 🇮🇪🇸🇳🇯🇲🇬🇳🇧🇯🇧🇴
right after a Japanese engineer wanted to make shakeless building structures, unbelievable
Can you explain what you mean?
@@SentinalSlice probably not
Rigid buildings are worse because the shaking energy has to go somewhere. Tall buildings in California are designed to sway in earthquakes without breaking. Some buildings are sitting on giant springs. New freeway overpasses and connector ramps are designed with "shelves" so they can slide sideways without breaking anything.

It it happened in Dubai , it would become a big pile of imported cement, like the rest of the place.
Japan, is one of the most innovative countries in the world. Hope for safety and best thoughts for all.
7.1 quake in Japan is like a 4.1 in America! That’s how good they are in engineering for Earthquakes!
Innovative ? Umm in what sense ?
Nah, California has the same standards for buildings. Japan went through the bombings in WWII and have had several major quakes that destroyed basically every building that wasnt' built to withstand Earthquakes. You don't tear things down and rebuild to meet codes you know.
Bruh you can't just put a 13-year-old photo of damage with a current headline like that. I thought my mom was dead 💀
I hope everyone in Japan is ok, I have a friend who lives there and I worry for her safety.
Very little damage from the recent earthquake which was pretty localized in its strongest parts to the southeast corner of Kyushu island in West Japan, but the predicted Nankai Trough Earthquake (that might not happen) is also predicted to hit strongest in West/Central Japan (pretty wide range of possible epicenters).
If your friend lives in or near Tokyo, anywhere in Northeast Japan, Hokkaido, or very far south down in Okinawa, then you there shouldn't be much cause for you to worry! We will likely feel it here in Tokyo depending on how strong and how far east it comes, but it is not predicted to be that severe for East Japan in what I have read.
If she lives in West Japan or Central Japan, (for example, perhaps around Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Nagoya, Kobe, Kyushu or Shikoku islands), then she is likely making sure she has some emergency preparations just in case while the chances of a large earthquake are heightened over the next week (things like emergency rations, water backups, new batteries, slippers for broken glass, etc.) and look up evacuation centers around her (often will be nearby school buildings).
(This goes for anyone else reading this from West Japan. Might not be necessary, but can't hurt to be prepared for the next 7 days)
Me too❤️🙏🏼
Praying for safety and recovery 🙏🏻
Were never gonna play gta IV now...
As an American who lives in Japan, some perspective. Notice how they say we felt the quake, but there is zero mention of damage or death. If this earthquake hit anywhere else in the world, including the United States, that place would have suffered a catastrophe--which by definition is an amount of damage beyond calculation. But in Japan, we just felt it.
Mass transit was disrupted for a few hours, but not stopped entirely. It did not take days, weeks, much less months to recover.
What you should be sensationalizing is not that the earthquake occurred and there is this warning, but that people in Japan are like "That was a big one," and then we just went on about our business as usual.
Japan is the natural disaster capital of the world, also a potential global war flashpoint, so what the real story should be is how we manage to keep calm and carry on despite our eternally hazardous situation.
State side selfishness, pride, & vanity are running amuck and we're building shanties.
If you have been away for a while you're going to find more than the infrastructure in a state of decay.
I recommend reevaluating what you consider eternal.
The pics we got showed some tremors but nothing catastrophic. Certainly did not appear to be 7.1. Did they make a mistake with that number ? was it a 5.1 ? that's what it looked like.......from the videos.
@@linanicolia1363 In Japan, we get the earthquake warning before we feel it. And whatever you're watching on television, there is a map telling you what the magnitude was, where, and the tsunami threat. Your post is complete BS.

@@Battleneter Yeah, I understand that, but sometimes I do wonder if we will have our own mega earthquake. California soon…
Actually on the moment magnitude scale, an 8 is 30 times stronger than a 7. A 9 is 30×30 stronger than a 7. So, 900 times the amount of energy is released in a 9.0 earthquake than a 7.0. I just hope I'm not around to see it when the Pacific northwest gets hit by the inevitable 9.0 that geologists know will eventually come.

Until the fault line says.....Hold my beer.
They don't go with the lowest bidder.
These are needed in California ASAP. It's already been said for years that Cali is due for a big earthquake. I know it would cost so much money to have this done, but it's something the state should take seriously before it's too late.
@@TheRealScooterGuy Yup - the building standards here are very strict, and apartments are regularly checked for structural integrity. When you buy an apartment here, you have to pay a monthly maintenance fee that goes into ensuring the building is kept up to code.

My parents befriended a Japanese family with a young boy in the same grade as my little sister. Our parents had each other's families over for dinner and, at Easter, we took them on a picnic out in the Texas bluebonnets. Dad had served in Germany during the Reconstruction and the Yamashita's were equally as loyal to Japan as we were to the United States. They had a son, Tommy, who was my sister's age and many years of later, after my folks had visited them in Japan, their only child died from cancer caused by excessive cigarettes...my parents went to Japan to show their support and a few years later my sister died of a drug overdose. These loving, wonderful parents came to Houston months later to show their love and support of my beloved Mother's and Father. This is what God loves to see...his Children supporting one another, no matter if one must go halfway around the world to be there for one another. How blessed are we who've watched our parents walk the walk. In memory of my Mother. Dad. 95, asks God every day to be with her., again.

I was stationed in Japan for the 2011 quake and tsunami. Didn't feel it as I had just deployed for training stuff but I did get to see those infamous debris fields. I live in Shikoku, Japan and it was a bit shaky 🫨.
No, we should be prepared. But, the amount of smaller quakes we have had means the stored energy is being released in small amounts. Instead of one giant shake, we are dancing a lot.
Nope. That apparently has no effect whatsoever on the chances or strength of a larger quake. Prior to the quake in northern Japan in 2011, there were a lot of large quakes that preceded it.
@@zoeherriot Have you concluded that the make up of each tectonic plate is the exact same? Maybe even have a mark up of how they are exactly the same. Please provide more information on how this is the same situation.
@@straighttoyou this is true of all faults. You can not predict future quakes based on current quakes. It doesn't work like that, and you don't have magically different plate near you. The reason is the fault lines are not all just one contiguous stress point. The release of energy may have released pressure in a very local region - but adjacent parts of the fault may still be under pressure. Just like what happened in Japan. You are wrong. And I recommend you don't let your guard down because you think there is no longer a risk. Again, you are wrong.
