    Claiborne is simply beautiful! One day I hope to work there. I plan an appointment to visit the farm every time I go visit Kentucky.

    sent to Japan from this farm, just from this time period - Ogygian (the one getting hosed off), Ferdinand (slaughtered in Japan), Forty Niner (lived a long life in Japan, only died recently), they reference Wallenda as having a connection to Claiborne, he went to Japan to stand, as well
    Ogygian & Wallenda were eventually repatriated to Old Friends to live out their lives back in Kentucky, though both returned worse-off than when they left (Ogygian with only one eye, and Wallenda with an ankle the size of a bowling ball, which restricted his turnout, and required special shoeing)

      What do you mean getting slaughtered in Japan ?

      @@juniorjohnson5961 Ferdinand - 1986 Kentucky Derby winner - was sold to Japan to continue his stud career there...at some point, his Japanese owner(s) decided to send him to be slaughtered (not sure if he was eaten by humans, or used as animal food)...this was only revealed to people in the US after the fact, & caused an uproar, which I don't believe was fully understood in Japan, at least at the time (racing has since really taken off there, with a huge fandom for top horses, so, while they still slaughter horses in Japan, it's less likely a 'known' horse will meet that cruel fate)...horses sold to stand stud overseas in more recent years, are often sold with what's called a "Ferdinand Clause," which states that, if, at some future time, the foreign owner no longer wants the horse, he can (probably sell, not just give/donate - gotta squeeze that last buck out of them) be returned to the US to live out his life

      @@lauranolastnamegiven3385 Thank You Laura 🙏
      I thought you were using the term slaughtered as meaning lost badly.

      @@juniorjohnson5961 you're welcome, no, sadly...on a positive note, Ferdinand's demise has, no doubt, saved many other horses through awareness, & there's an organization called Friends of Ferdinand (there are many people who do this, I only highlight this one, because they were directly inspired by Ferdinand), which takes in racehorses, rehabs them, if necessary, then begins them in retraining for second career, & finds new homes for them

    When did 'the derby' become the big one in American racing?

    • @bon1042
      @bon1042 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's because it's the first and oldest of American thoroughbred racing, something like 1875? Not sure. It has that prestige, and it was a time when, another world, long gone, when the wealthy and the nouveau riche owned breeding operations, and it was all about the horses, not so much the money. They took care of these thoroughbreds.

      The same thing happened to Excellor, one of them went to Sweden to slaughter. After these episodes, policy was written into transactions that the horse will come back to U.S. and maybe more to it, but the point is that they won't end up in a slaughterhouse. That's for Derby winners and winners of big races, the others, there are groups constantly rescuing and being sent to the retirement farms to live out their lives.

      lol, this is nothing compared to what some farms do these days (200+ mares/year for a few top studs)
