Em and Lloyd, The both of you have great passports (US & Canada + HK), and the fact that the both of you can plan so meticulously whilst maintaining financial stability is something commendable. If you ever have a kid in the future, the best gift you can give to him/her is your Canada + USA + HK passports. I know that the both of you said that staying in HK is the plan for now, but thinking about a different country will be great. Especially those with jus soli types of citizenships - so your kid will have unlimited access to the world. I am envious - but I wish the both of you the best.
I think you should consider to start your own business if you quit LAW!! But I think you are too young to quit a law career as you are in early 30's??? I quit at 50 when I was multi-millionaire in US$. Now, I have 3 companies in China. GOOD LUCK to you!! Join a big company as a legal advisor?? You are too young to quit.
Thanks for these videos. Quitting big law (in 2001) was the best thing I ever did. Stigma that quitting meant I wasn't going to 'make it' unwarranted. Happier, thinner and more rested as a solo.
Delighted for you on this adventure! I can resonate with similar backgrounds from Canada, California, and Hong Kong. I left my HK big law job (fancy magic circle relic) ~2009 financial crisis. However brief, the experience showed me I'd rather be in my first passion, computer engineering. Took some years to make it happen, first thru banking, but then eventually into business and product roles at big tech. Recently "FI / retired at 39"... figuring out the vision of this next decade. It's incredibly hard to dispel society's expectations and rewire your life. I find it helpful to listen to your gut over reason and be persistent. Wishful and excited for you guys!

Most people do the opposite (growing up in HK and study in the West) I grew up in HK and moved to Canada when I was 10. When I visit HK in my teens, I never thought I could go back to Asia. How was your experience going the opposite direction?

Obviously there are short term benefits, such as the failed/censored US ipos doing listing on HKEX, but I am curious re whether the political climate is slowly but inevitbaly compromising the judicial system of HK in terms of credibility and clients' willingness to select HK courts, as well as HKIAR as their DR forum.
Let’s face it the biggest reason u guys can afford to quit is because u guys have plenty of options to not even stay in hk. Now once u quitted, why always refer urself as former lawyer in hk as though without that label u can’t speak as just being urself or u still want the high esteem of being a lawyer even though u are not entitled to it anymore kind of like dodomen always labelling themselves as former Apple engineer ? Have plenty of friends working in tech that consume lot of brain and hair guys and girls who don’t necessarily like the high intense pressure but work hard to support their family and they know if that’s what they need to endure to get what they want they have to do it. I only see two big babies whining

Kudos to you two..... Being born in HK, spent 10 yrs in Vancouver and end up in Toxic HK medical industry. I think the most important factor about quitting...... basically for any Asian family is the "parents". Since mine still demanded 100K HKD per month from me. I don't see how I would quit.

I’m not sure what to think about the trend of “quitting” a job in order to become a full time content creator. Yes, a full time job is strenuous. I’m a technical senior expert myself and can relate to the pressure, responsibility and working late hours. And of course, one’s own well-being should always be a priority. But to me, quitting a job for a more comfortable alternative sometimes feels a bit backboneless. What about sticking it out and growing instead of avoiding? Our society needs nurses, teachers, doctors, engineers, craftsmen, janitors,… Especially adolescents may be mislead by the trend of content creation as full time job.
I get where you're coming from but theres still a shit ton of people who pursue a traditional career. I don't think it's fair to want someone to stick something out for the sake of sticking it out. If it doesn't bring them any joy then they're just wasting their time, and for what? Aren't most of us working for a more comfortable life style anyways? Good for them that they're in a place where they can leave their traditional career and try something new out. They still have their degrees, they can go back to being lawyers whenever.
It depends on what one's definition of "comfortable" is - arguably, continuing to work as a lawyer (despite finding the career unsatisfying) could be the more "comfortable" choice given the stability and pay, and avoiding taking the risk of trying something new when one may not be feeling fulfilled with their work could also be a missed opportunity for growth and challenge. Agreed that society does need people to pursue important careers, although there was certainly no shortage of lawyers in Hong Kong - quite the opposite actually!

It's great to see a self-fulfillment path being chosen. You can always return to law whenever you'd like so there's really no urgency. This whole situational epiphany is very interesting.
