- original version of willard robison's standard sung and conducted by the man himself ... a definitive classic .... thanks to the great SUPERBATONE home made cd ... buy it ... merci à brad kay .... now isn't that as sweet and original as the very best from the man himself, hoagy carmichael? ... please do yourself a favour, and buy jack teagarden's cd devoted to robison's songs, THINK WELL OF ME (recorded in 1962, a few months before his death) with the very best version of COTTAGE FOR SALE ... or listen to it on youtube ...
A COTTAGE FOR SALE
Words, Larry Conley. Music, Willard Robison. ©1929.
VERSE: Love in a bungalow high on a hill-
That was the way we had planned it.
Now it's a bungalow empty and still,
Needing your love to command it.
CHORUS: Our little dream castle with ev'ry dream gone
Is lonely and silent; the shades are all drawn;
And I feel so lonely as I gaze upon
A cottage for sale.
The lawn we were proud of is covered with hay.
Our beautiful garden has withered away.
Where you planted roses, the weeds seem to say:
"A cottage for sale."
From every single window I see your face,
But when I reach a window, there's empty space.
The key's in the mailbox the same as before,
But no one is waiting for me any more.
The end of our story is told on the door:
A cottage for sale.
Larry Conley did not write the words to this - it was stolen from William Noonan
His writing is as dear to me as any American Songbook composer of standards. Jack Teagarden's two records of almost exclusively Robison penned songs are divine & I will be buried w/ their LP's.
Recorded on March 24, 1930.
I found this on Velvet Tone and was bewitched !
Long before he became "The Founder" of McDonald's Ray Kroc used to play piano with this band in Florida.
My dad was his late life publish. I have many records and scores.
Warren Meyers was he something to do with the Meyers Dance Orchestra by any chance?
Ray Krocs autobiography brought me here
Robinson did not write this - William Noonan of Philadelphia, a big-band drummer and radio singer around 1929 -1933, had it stolen from him at one of those places in the day that offered money for songs, but said they "were not interested", but copied it, just the same.
Wow, if so, then that is fascinating. I'm curious to know if this is anecdotal or if it is in print anywhere? #musicarcheology
@@AlexPangmanofficial Only printed as you see it and my homage to William Noonan - Thanks for your reply
Love this tune and Willards vocal is icing on the cake. Thanks for sharing!
Merci beaucoup pour nous faire partager cet enregistrement, l'introduction est si rare
i really like robison's music; he was born and lived not very far from home. what a wonderful recording.... a million thanks.
I had always thought "Old Folks," popularized by Mildred Bailey in 1938 and recorded in the 1950's with strings and chorus by Charlie Parker, was written by Hoagy Carmichael, but I was wrong. Willard Robison wrote it!
This has to be the best and sweetest version of this song yet! I LOVE this!
Respect
What lyrics....
