Fall Has Arrived To My Part Of The World - Getting Things Done

  • Join me as I do a quick walk about around the property and show you what I've been up to and what's going on in the garden beds. What a huge harvest of zucchini that I've been blessed with. I'm looking forward to making some sweet and zesty zucchini relish. It's possible that I may buy some tomatoes this week and use 1/2 the zucchini's to make salsa as well. I certainly have enough zucchini for a smaller batch of both.
    I was able to create another no dig garden bed on the east side of the property. It will have time to settle over the winter and be ready for planting next spring/summer.
    Thanks so much for taking the time to like, comment, share and subscribe to the channel. I appreciate you all very much.

    Nice late summer garden tour! Of course up your way, it's probably more like when we're in the middle of autumn here! When you said 3°C, I had to look on my phone conversion calculator & wow, that's getting very close to freezing! We're still quite hot here during the day, but our nights are finally cooling down a bit, which is quite pleasant & nothing at all cold yet. We're actually having rain today. It's really good rain where it's just a drizzle all day long. Some would call that gloomy, but we really needed this wonderful life nourishing rain for all our plants & flowers & the smaller critters too. Birds are chirping, squirrels are gathering nuts, and cats are enamored with this quick return to usual life here instead of the terribly dry conditions we've had most of the summer. I took a walk in the rain through my yard & I'm amazed how quickly nature regenerates when given its natural sustenance again! I already see new leaves growing on stalks that were almost barren with old dried up leaves during the drought. And I'm talking almost overnight! We won't probably get to freezing until early November, so these new leaves & shoots will help keep these plants & trees healthy through the next month & a half until autumn brings the riot of colors throughout this area, generally peaking around late November. Could be earlier this year. The drought stressed most all the flora here. But after the first freeze will come the work of protection for my more vulnerable flora. Banana trees must be chopped back to the ground, shredded & spread around the trunks underneath a deep layer of straw. As the cold progresses, fig trees will have to have their now bare branches buried in straw & my little palm tree will need protection also. The Eucalyptus will be fine. It gets knocked back every winter, but it always maintains its lower portions, more like a Eucalyptus shrub, just perfect! I'm seeing autumn wildflowers beginning to poke up from the ground. Life is strong despite all the hardships. And next spring will be renewal of all the amazing beauty that lives here in the Virginia mountain South. Thanks for sharing your garden & your thoughts, your successes & ALL the beauty of your personal "almost a green acre"!!! And mostly, thanks for the smile today!

    • @AlmostaGreenAcre-zs5eu
      @AlmostaGreenAcre-zs5eu  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I was reflecting on your recent video walkabout as you described all this beautiful growth springing into action, with the much needed rain you received. It's truly amazes me how creation takes on a life of its own, season after season, being hard wired that way. Last Sunday was the lowest the temps have gone at night here at 3 C. Since then, we've had some cool evenings but the evening temps have bounced back up, which pleases me. During the days our temps have been sweltering and humid. Yesterday was 28 C and today 29 C. It was difficult to get much done outside but I did manage to get more long grass and weeds cut, trying to make a path to drive the truck around back. Rather than filling the wheel barrel up with soil, branches, or whatever, I just want to load it in the back of the truck and drive it there. Makes sense to me 🤔so that was the priority this week so far. You're so right, life is strong despite all of the hardships. So happy that my video helped bring a smile to your face my friend Your note did the same to me 🙂Thank you and have a great evening.

      Haha 😂Well, if I were your neighbor, I'd bring you some and sit a spell 💯 You could have your fill of zucchini. I bought the actual sweet potatoes and rooted them inside (the process actually started in the winter/March). When they began growing vines (which took months, lol), I cut slips off and rooted them in water and then they got planted into the ground. I'm told that once you plant a sweet potato patch you want to make sure that is where it will be forever because you never get every single one when you harvest and they keep coming back. They are tubers and are actually part of the morning glory family. Thanks for stopping by my friend ❤

      It certainly is easy to grow. I like zucchini but not this much of it, lol 😂What you see on that table to the right I grated and mixed with some tomatoes to make salsa today. Zucchini takes on the flavors of things its paired with and I didn't have many tomatoes. The zucchini on the left and what's left in the garden, I will make zucchini relish with 🙂

      Hostas are great as understory plants, so I would plant something that's a bit taller that would give year-round interest. Maybe some nice white pine (miniature) or other evergreens so you could put some sparkly lights on them at Christmas? They would look wonderful right next to the house.

    I think you may get some cosmos blooms. I threw seeds down last October and by early spring I got my cosmos and poppies. I love to watch things grow.
    My tomatoes took forever this year. I sure love this garden tour. No joke this reminds me….I grabbed butterfly bush seeds as I left my friends house today and put them in my pocket and watching this reminds me to take them out of my pocket😳

    We call it a wipper snipper too! For the sunflower seeds, I'm always guided by when birds start to get at them. But, also, I think it's the case that when seeds are fully developed they almost fall out upon touch and they're big and plump. You've done so much with that garden in such a short time, very impressive.

      Thanks so much Richard 🥰 and thanks for the info on the sunflowers. I was concerned because the winds are knocking them over and snapping the stems. I've already had to cut a few off the main truck. So the ones that I cut will not dry out and give me seeds?

    Everything is still looking so good in spite of your low temps. It looks like you have foxglove near the road, if it is, cuddos to you, mine gave up and killed over a few weeks ago. I also call it weedeating or a weedeater. Some even say a string trimmer. We are in the middle of a surprise tropical storm right now, been a deluge of wind and rain for 2 days as it is slow moving. We had to go out in it this evening to put up animals and I noticed many of my things layed over in the garden because of the winds. I might have to do damage control when it's over.
