  • Peter Philips (1560-1628) was an English composer and Catholic priest who went into self-imposed exile in 1582 as the English climate was not at all favorable towards Catholics. He went to Flanders, then Rome, then back to Flanders. His work is included in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, and there are several books of sacred music for between between two and eight voices. This motet is for five voices (the two top voices largely sing antiphonally, trading parts though they sing at the same time) and optional organ. The Latin text translates to:
Mary is taken up into heaven,
the Angels rejoice, praising, they bless God.
Mary the Virgin is taken up into the heavenly chamber,
in which the King of kings sits upon His starry throne.
