Having you tried raising meal worms as duck feed ? meal worms, silkworms are pretty easy to grow with a set up that recycle. Silkworms are pretty lucrative if you know how to raise. A pound of silkworms need 100 kilos of leaves to grow and form silk. Maybe you can raise protein for ducks with silkworm and as well as silk that will fetch a very good price.
I haven't looked into it. But generally anything that is high value is expensive or difficult to produce at scale. I want to avoid producing an expensive product as livestock feed. BSFL are the most appropriate - I will one day experiment with this
I used to buy day old sexed ducklings which were mixed with the adults when they were approximately the same size, young ducks grow very quickly reaching near adult size at 8-9 weeks. Unlike hens and young pullets, we've never seen fighting / bullying and they settle down very quickly. They're generally much less trouble than hens. They are much more 'mucky' than hens since they play and try to swim in their water.
Love your videos. We've learned so much in our first year of having ducks. We tried to tag our ducks with 20mm, but they slipped them right off. What size ring are you using on the khakis?
Yes that's a real problem. The ones we use are 16mm and you have to wait for the duck to get big enough before putting on them. Also we have tried other types of leg rings which we will probably do a video on soon. Thanks for watching!
Our kakis are really friendly and more courageous than others ( Abacot R, Hookbill, Cayuga and Runners). They are also bigger and more demanding ( same as Cayugas). But we raise them like pets and they are used to be handled. I did not know Whelsh H lay less though!
To be honest it sounds like your Khaki's might not be pure bred or working stock. Khaki's are mean't to be light weight and the skittish behaviour tends to be associated with lighter weight.
@@parccarreg Yes I agree! They come from a place with hudreds of breeds for hobby or pets not an proffesional egg farm. The boys are too big. The Indians where really hysterical at one point but now with a lot of work they are calm. Dutch Hookbills are small and calm but I really think it is the only breed like that!!! I am sure that if they are raised as pets they are sweet and gentle all of them with just enough patience!
Thank you! We were so afraid of them being too small. Looking forward to more videos 😊

The interim shot with the dark red nails holding the rings was hilarious. I’d looked away for a moment and wow!
ha! not sure where that is in the video but that's Abi's nails! Beautiful right?

Yes you're right, there is not much bullying that goes on between the age groups when it comes to ducks. And yes - they are way messier than chickens!

Interesting. Enjoying following your channel 😊
Thanks!
I think the saying “it’s like herding cats” should be changed to “herding ducks”. 😂
