I have a RZR XP1K with over 700 miles of aggressive riding in east coast trails and my belt looks the same as it did new. In fact, out of my whole riding group the only belt that’s ever been changed due to failure was on a RZR 800 that was primarily operated (and beat on) by children. And that belt didn’t break, it was just badly worn and popped off the clutches. We have powerful machines (800-up) and ride aggressively through gnarly, wet, rocky, steep trails and our belts are fine. There are plenty of guys getting over 6000-7000 miles on factory Polaris belts. So yes, it’s a wear item, but most failures are rider-inflicted.

I just had some family members purchase both of these and here's a few observations I made. The can am has a smooth power build with good power for the size. The Yamaha is about equal when it comes to acceleration, however there's is a lot more torque right off of the bat then tapers off quicker. The Yamaha is laid out much better for basic maintenance like changing the oil.

I've never looked at the 850 sportsman. How do they get the driveline to work with a parallel turned sideways and still have room? The one from their bikes is pretty narrow, I don't see them having an issue putting it straight across.
People who have the SxS with the 850 Yamaha say that it is too wide it fit normal on a ATV. I have a Sportsman 1000XP and the engine is running front to back and it works great the width between your feet is smaller than my Grizzly or my Kodiak.
Unlike CAMAN who needs to to be muscel atvs yamaha is offering a utility atv. If you guys need more power a decked head, ported motor and 5 angle valve job with a fuel tuner will shut you up very quick. just add $2000 at any motor shop. you can only go so fast in the woods when trail riding.
I just bought a 2019 EPS Realtree camo with everything the SE has except the painted finish and the red coil shocks for considerably less than an SE. Why can't Yamaha put a winch on these from the factory? I now have to spend $400.00 and a few hours putting one on. I would have been happy to pay more upfront.
Not so much a review of the Kodiak, but more a comparison to the Grizzly. Yeah, before you buy a Kodiak you are going to compare it to a Grizzly. Your videos are usually awesome. But you didn’t really cover the features of the Kodiak.

Yamaha Needs a longer wheel base. I find my Suzuki 750 doesn't "WHEELIE" when your claiming extreme obstetricals. MY Yamaha is not as Confident inspiring as my Suzuki with a load on. I think it's because The wheel base is slightly longer on my Suzuki and the engine is farther forward. The rear wheels are over the load. Unlike the Yamaha which is forward of the load when it's on the rear racks. Load on a couple salt blocks, Hay bale and Traverse up a trail. YAMAHA is very tippy.. My Yamaha has almost come over backwards on me a few times. It's for sale!
Yamaha went with the 686 due to new lower emissions and the new engine is being made in the Fuji plant that also makes the higher end Yamaha motorcycle engines. There have been issues with the 708 engine but most owners reported no problems. The 686 engine has better lower end torque but the 708 has higher HP. The 686 runs super lean and runs very hot for low emissions and improved gas mileage. The throttle mapping is improved, the power is there instantly. The new 686 engine is a torque monster but you won't win any races with it.
Tom Turd ... thank you for sharing this information ! Seems like a perfect fit for this Kodiak , hopefully the Grizzly will soon get what it deserves ( a bigger twin cylinder engine)
Tom Turd almost every ATV started with emissions issues including my Honda. Those issues were worked out on a 708 is that making it because they storm took out the plant. You can actually see the footage on TH-cam.
You guys realize how ridiculous you sound in this review? So the kodiak is in your opinion the new flagship because the grizz is no longer valid? And Yamaha actually sponsors your show! Here’s a hint, not everyone wants let alone needs one of your canukistan made 1000 pound 90hp vee twin behemoths, first reason is they don’t want to become friends with the service manager of their dealership since they’ll be seeing him a lot. Secondly the grizz has plenty of pop for anything you could ever want to do except drag racing the vee twins. Also, the 850 parallel twin is never going in this chassis so let that dream go. The next logical move for the grizz is an all new single cyl, no really, KTM has a 690cc single making 72hp bone stock so even if yammie bumps up the displacement and brings out an all new motor and it makes 60hp from the factory, that would be huge, and make an already great machine greater without adding more weight and mass.
TheOMEGANOX I definitely agree with you but the issue with making HP out of small motors is they loose reliability and the motors won’t last as long. I think if Yamaha was to do anything they would probably come out with a 800 twin making less power then al the other guys but the motor would last for ever
True not everyone wants a 1000cc making 90hp, but it'd be nice if Yamaha made something a bit bigger, and the wolverine 850s and yxz 1000 are quite reliable so I'm sure whatever motor Yamaha would put in the grizz, reliability wouldn't be an issue
Yamaha is just milking the ATV market they have every kind of engine under the sun in their motorcycles my FZ 09 has a 3 cylinder 850cc beast. They have the R1 with 4 cylinders and that crossplane engine tech... they r just milking it for as long as possible that 700 single cylinder is outdated and long in the tooth there is no reason they couldnt make a bigger engine for atvs I'm all yamaha for my motorcycles no doubt but for atvs go for can am or a company who is actually innovating and changing stuff up

People who have the SxS with the 850 Yamaha say that it is too wide it fit normal on a ATV. I have a Sportsman 1000XP and the engine is running front to back and it works great the width between your feet is smaller than my Grizzly or my Kodiak.
The way the front bump bar is made looks like it's going to be rusting from the inside out. I don't see where the water can escape from it.
Aaron S there’s slots drilled in the bottom and the inside is sprayed. I’ve got one should be interesting to c how long it holds up
@@rocktown1584 Cool thanks.
AND some people don't just ride their quads in the woods!
So glad I grew up and bought a 850 outlander 👍🏻
Be nice to the service department 🤷♂️
I just bought a 2019 EPS Realtree camo with everything the SE has except the painted finish and the red coil shocks for considerably less than an SE.
Why can't Yamaha put a winch on these from the factory? I now have to spend $400.00 and a few hours putting one on. I would have been happy to pay more upfront.
Tom Giovanni my 18 EPS SE came with a free winch. Special offer at the time. Included installation

Great and all but the bumper needs to be heavier. For farm work and beating it through trees
Not so much a review of the Kodiak, but more a comparison to the Grizzly.
Yeah, before you buy a Kodiak you are going to compare it to a Grizzly.
Your videos are usually awesome. But you didn’t really cover the features of the Kodiak.
I’m not gonna look at Yamaha till the they v twin this beast .....YAMAHA ITS TIME!!!!!!
Buy a Can-Am...
how many KM they do whit 1L of diesel ?
Whats the main differences between the Kodiak and Grizzly?
Size and price
Bells and whistles
I did not think atvs would all go to a belt drive. Back in the day I laughed at em.
I think two new Grizzly models 750 & 1000 V-twin engines. If Yamaha would take the 3cylinder out the yz buggy and put it into the grizzly market take over. If Honda would take the engine out of the Africa twin and put it into there atv 🥳💥✨🎆🎇market take over. We can only dream gonna purchase my son an atv this upcoming Christmas and probably me the first of next year probably gonna get him a Honda or Yamaha and me a Can am 570 Xmr
I will never deny Yamaha ATV’s ability and reliability...it has been and still is top class 👍🏻
But, for me, they heavily lack in the “fun” department....if I need a reliable workhorse I’d buy a Yamaha...but for everything else I’ll buy almost anything else LOL
What's the weight capacity??
Tôi rất thích loại xe này.😀👍
Is the Kodiak or the Grizzly suitable for two People? Thx for your Answers!
absolutely. I have a Kodiak 450 that runs with 2 just fine.
Yes, they both can handle 2 people just fine, but technical they're not 2 up ATVs, so not supposed to drive with 2 people, will make it easier to flip on steep hills if ur not careful
the new 686 engine is made by Fuji, the older 708 engine was made by Subaru
that's false.... 1st of all Fuji is owned by Subaru and 2nd of all the 686 is a Yamaha engine. there is nothing "new" about it either.
@@jasonmorehouse3756 whats new about it?
Just the heads were made by subaru on the 708. The 686 is all yamaha. The 708 has issues because of the heads.
If u want good power & a good atv get a kawasaki brute 750.
@@jasonmorehouse3756 compression didn't change and unless you can show different part numbers I don't believe you. also a piston and cam doesn't make a engine 'new"
Chingon 😎😎😎😎
700 is plenty powerful
What's the difference if there both 700 ??

Justin wants more diversity in the ATV market
Prices in Canadian $$ please!
You can find all the pricing on the Yamaha Canada website. It is not a bad site and actually pretty easy to navigate.
@@dirttraxtv Yamaha USA doesn't put prices on their website? I'm not following your logic. I look for Canadian media on youtube so that I will get information that is relevant to me.
The information in the TEST RIDE is absolutely relevant. Your only complaint is that we didn't give you CDN MSRP, which is available online within about 2 clicks.
Just checked that literally took me 2 clicks from the homepage. I know you can do it!!
Furthermore, Yamaha USA provides US MSRP on its site as well. Good luck.
I love atv. But at malaysia not sale atv
YAMAHA....please bring back the solid rear axle AND manual shift, or at least make it an option!
A Special Edition that doesn't come with a winch. Paint and mags only for the extra $$$$. Hmmmmm.

It’s nice 👍 but for $9,300 I’d just get the Grizzly .
Why did they go from 708cc back to a 686cc engine platform for these Yamaha ATV ‘s ?
@@jeffmacey6482 Lot of problems with the 708 smoking. The 686 is bullet proof
@@NorthwoodsNomadthat is a Yamaha engine, the 686. the 708 has been reported to be made by Fuji
Same tired single cylinder.
Well, I don't think they'll be happy until they build a quad with the 1800cc v max v twin. Some can never be satisfied.
The 850 has 69 hp and should be very reliable. The yxz 1000 is a 3 cyl and wouldn’t fit in an atv.
@@gregrowe1168 yeah, my point was if they make a new 1000 for the grizz, reliability wouldn't be an issue. Given there track record
That thing looks like it’s from 2003
Yamaha is just milking the ATV market they have every kind of engine under the sun in their motorcycles my FZ 09 has a 3 cylinder 850cc beast. They have the R1 with 4 cylinders and that crossplane engine tech... they r just milking it for as long as possible that 700 single cylinder is outdated and long in the tooth there is no reason they couldnt make a bigger engine for atvs
I'm all yamaha for my motorcycles no doubt but for atvs go for can am or a company who is actually innovating and changing stuff up
Yamaha it’s seems is more sport quad or mx quad I mean raptor and yfz enough said
