- We now have the 3rd single to be released from Sabaton's upcoming album "The War To End All Wars", this time telling the story of Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart, who is one of the most decorated British officers in history. In this video we discuss the video's production, the audio mixing and mastering and who worked on it, discuss some history of "The Unkillable Soldier", and take a minute to admire guitarist Tommy Johansson's mustache...

another fact about Adrian Carton de Wiart: in WW 1 nurses had his PERSONAL pyamas in the field hospital. he was sent to the same field hospital over and over again
"he ripped off a finger so the doc wouldn't amputate" Wrong. He did it because the doc DIDNT WANT to amputate. a pure case of "fine, i'll do it myself"
Nah, I believe it was to prevent the doctor from amputating his whole hand, so he bit off his own finger to save the rest of the hand which would be amputated anyways.
@@tristanvoltaire2058 story is that he really cut it himself (or more accurately, tried to rip ot off with his teeth and ended up damaging it so much amputating it was now the only choice) because he could go back to the front faster as an amputee than if he waited to heal in the hospital.
Remember that guy is a complete madman that did EVERYTHING in his power to stay on the battlefield as much as possible.

I vaguely remember Sir Adrian ripping off his fingers WITH HIS TEETH, but I could be wrong. Either way, the man was an absolute badass, imo.
This music video summed up: "Sabaton band members desperately try to kill their historian and he just WON'T. BLOODY. DIE."
For real though, this music video is so cheeky and meant to be over the top. And because of that, while the song is good with that galloping beat and guitars, I basically screamed with laughter throughout. I honestly did not expect such a funny, tongue-in-cheek video from them. And I loved Indy in this. They told him to go full blown melodrama and he CHEWED the scenery to utter BITS.
Let's be honest, there is no other way to do a tribute to this guy. Sir de Wairt should have died several times over but the man was plot armor made real.

There is a movie about The Lost Battalion, and it's called "The Lost Battalion". The movie came out way before the Sabaton song (in 2001), but it's a pretty good movie, I'd recommend it.
The last battle... it is voted BY FAR THE MOST UNDERATED sabaton song by their fans

5:40 The "hook" for this song, at least for me, is the chorus that sings "In the age of madness, In a time of sadness". That's constantly stuck in my head.
I love it how they decide to break it at the end and restart it.

I find it interesting that the 3 singles released all have a different feel to them.
Christmas truce was upplifting and hopefull, soldier of heaven felt serious and sad.
And the unkillable soldier felt abit cheeky and fun.
And the really amazing thing is these songs and the overall album are focusing about one thing: war, specifically WWI

When Sir de Wiart finished WW1 he held the title of Acting Brigade commander after having taken part in multiple great battles of WW1, when he was awarded the Victoria cross he dedicated it to the 8th Gloustershire Regiment for the fighting they went through, he then spent time in Poland as part of the British Polish mission to aid Poland in multiple conflicts, he ended up fighting the a red army cavalry unit that attacked the observation train he was on, he accidentally fell off it but managed to run back on and keep fighting, the whole story is so rich and amazing that if it hadn’t been documented I wonder how we would have known about it
It is too off-the-walls to be fake. No one would think to write a fictional story about someone that was shot and should have died 9 times.
As someone who's been to war i understand why he enjoyed it. War changes you and sometimes soldies who come back can't really find a place for themselfes and they feel alone. Even i've wanted to go back and fight because i felt like the war was the only place where i belong.
Love how everytime Sabaton makes a music video about a single historical figure, they cast Indy Neidell to portray him.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one with that chorus stuck in my head. The rest is pretty much what you'd expect from any other Sabaton song at this point, but that just makes the chorus even more outstanding.

Indy’s acting is hilarious in this one. He is a great addition to the band. The song is very catchy indeed. I loved it as well. In a couple of months there EU tour will start. I can not wait.
Amon Amarth recently released a song called "Put Your Back Into The Oar", hopefully hinting at an upcoming album. It's just a story video, but it is amazing.
I predict that, if they play that song live, there will be massive rowing pits.

The chorus has been stuck in my head for days by now. I'm not complaining though, the song is amazing!
Not only are Sabaton normally spot on, with the historical perspective. But as you also mentioned Indy, have his own history channel about the Great War, and since a major part of this Video takes place during WW1, I have no doubt that is 100% correct with the "Frankly I enjoyed that War" note.
9:30 There is one other memorable moment involving him after his military career - during a diplomatic posting in China. Apparently he encountered Mao during a dinner - and told him to his face that he despised communism...
He was still military, as a military advisor to China - and it was in a conference where they were trying to unite the Chinese against the Japanese. He interrupted Mao' speech to tell him his ideas were rubbish, in front of the whole conference.

9 years ago I was a promoter for a small venue in Buffalo, NY and we had Sabaton play there right around when Carolous Rex came out. We had 200 people there. Crazy to think that now they do thousands. They were great people and would love the chance to hang with them again.

@@TankTheTech This was before they were big enough for the Town Ballroom. In 2012 they played a dive venue called Broadway Joe's. A few years later they came back to play the Ballroom with Nightwish and completely stole the show.

I also think that the different sound, also make me think a bit of "old times" perhaps it was also the video that lead me to those thoughts. But I found it refreshing.
I fucking love this song. It's fast, it's powerful, it's intense. I'd say this song is one of the most actual Power Metal songs Sabaton has produced to date. Especially the last chorus, the "pick up", it's AWESOME!

Sir de Wiart is basically the epitome of my saying: Bravery is just a controlled form of madness.
And this song with its galloping beat( which I believe is a kinda reference to the fact that his first unit was cavalry one, but not sure about that) combined with general tone is definitely a love letter to that original Mad-Lad.
weirdly enough, I had completely opposite feelings about this song and the last one, Soldier of Heaven. I immediately fell in love with the latter while this one was more of a grower. I actually enjoyed this more after hearing your breakdown of the various parts of the music. made me appreciate it a little more.
When asked about the war he responded with " I rather enjoyed it" he is a legend

I met indy after a Sabaton show a few months ago when sabaton was playing in my hometown, i seemed to be the only one who recognized him. He was super cool and i took pictures with him and my brother 😊👍

I was waiting for this. Have you noticed that Joakim is NOT singing the chorus from the beginning? He comes in in the second part of it. Video is funny, and Indy is taking it to a whole new level. At the end, when Sabaton is doing Delta Force, I couldn't stop laughing. Great video, great song, the rythm gets your blood pumping.

The way Sabaton did the production, I have to wonder if they took creative liberty with the nurse...seriously, looks like he just keeps get hurt so he can spend time with her. Seriously, every time he was wounded and went back and saw THAT nurse, all I can hear in my head is "Hello, nurse!" (to quote the Animaniacs).

I'm surprised they didn't release "Valley of Death" as a single, as it's one of their best songs in recent years. It's their first one about a Bulgarian military feat, and the story about the Battle of Doiran, which is absolutely amazing.

i heard a story about an soldier who went into battle with just a sword and bagpipes and he was also absolutly crazy what he did in the war. i saw it on youtube from MrBallens video called this soldiers weapon of choice war crazy or something like this but this guy who they sang about was crazy aswell

Dude was half Irish that's how he was given a British knighthood 3 times in 3 different ways. He was also awarded the Victoria cross (British version of the medal of honor, highest military award) and the distinguished service order award (British version of the distinguished service cross, second highest military award) he was also made knight of the British empire (KBE), knight of the order of bath(CB), and knight of the order of the saint Michael and saint George (CMG).
Guy got 3 knighthoods and 2 of the highest military honors.

This this song I love that it has a unique sound compared to other Sabaton songs, you are also among the few reactors that also like its sound.
