    That moment when Franz is saluting Charlie and pulling away always tears me up. I was serving in my countrys SP forces in the late 80s, and one of our instructors told this story. He told us that during training, one of Franz´s instructors hat told him that "You follow the rules of war for you - not for your enemy. You fight by rules to keep your humanity". You fight by rules to keep your humanity, that is a powerful statement. Saluting your enemy is probably something of the most honorable any soldier can do.

    back in the days of ww1 and ww2 pilots often had a code, like the knights of old, and were basically the knights of the sky, hence the line "fly, fighting fair, it's the code of the air." also, if i recall correctly, Stigler said he was reminded of his trainer saying "if i ever hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute i will shoot you myself." or something to that effect and how he felt like that was the same type of situation.

    Here in Germany Franz Stigler was virtually unknown before the Sabaton song got released. And many of the people who knew of him, and quite a lot of them weren't even nazis, considered him a traitor, my grandma included because her uncle got killed during that bombing attack. I never felt that way, I always thought the Stigler showed more bravery that day than I could ever muster.

    • @warhammer5690
      @warhammer5690 3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Sad they felt that. Knowing that Rodel trained and commanded him in Afrika and was adamant that killing an enemy in a parachute would result in Rodel killing that pilot himself. Herr Stigler said that wrecked B17 was the parachute for those 9 surviving airmen. Safe journeys.

    • @inside98
      @inside98 3 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      I mean, I can understand the feelings.
      An interceptor's role is to defend the people on the ground. If you do not fulfill that role, the saved bomber crew will climb into a new bomber and kill more of the people you were supposed to protect.
      Don't get me wrong, I do not consider Stigler a traitor. I think he made a human decision in an very inhuman time, but I can understand why people who were alive during the war felt that way.
      It is really strange to listen to these stories. It seems like a different reality.
      Some of my family never returned from Stalingrad and my mom told me about the birthday card her aunt send to her husband. It returned with a stamp on it "An Absender zurück, gefallen für Großdeutschand" - "Return to sender, died for Greater Germany".
      Still gives me chills.

    This is without a doubt my favorite Sabaton song, & I get choked up every time I listen to it. It is definitely an ultimate display of respect, honor, & humanity on the field of battle, & Franz Stigler is absolutely a hero who deserve this recognition. It is much harder to show humanity & compassion in war than it is to follow orders & take out your target. Of course, that choice is not so easy nowadays because not every enemy has a code of honor that they abide by.

  • @michaellein2389
    @michaellein2389 3 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    Super reaction tank.
    I was born in Germany in 1979 and grew up here. I learned a lot about the Second World War in school. But the real understanding of the atrocities and the effects on the generations that followed only came after school, when I got to know the subject a little better. The best stories are the ones about mercy. It doesn't matter if it's a song or a film. All the crap about war wouldn't be necessary if people would slowly start to understand that we are all ONE species. And would not chase after wealth and power, but would care about the well-being of ALL people. So....I wipe away the rest of my tears and listen to Meadows of Heaven by Nightwish. Because I'm in a melancholic mood right now.

    My father fought in WWII flying C-47s dropping paratroopers into European combat zones. He met Charlie Brown some time around when this incident occurred. The crew of Ye Olde Pub might have been ordered not to speak of this incident, but others were there when the B-17 landed and knew what had happened. The story quietly spread among pilots. He rarely spoke about the war, but he did tell me this story. Several times. It was a merciful, chivalrous act in an unmerciful war and made a huge impact on him. “No Bullets Fly” is one of my favorite Sabaton songs and I love cherry-picking reactions to it. I appreciated how you read up on it and so knew a few basic facts, also that you added some facts on screen. Thank you.

None of that "No you are intruding on our copyrighted material"-kind of shite you sometimes get from other publishers. So nice to see that attitude from the band and their publishers.
    Hats off for you lads for taking this stance (and ladies, have seen a few in some concert videos).
    Cheers / B.
    (And Tank - You don't need to apologise for keeping a watchful eye on Ingrid.)

    Given my bio grandfather flew Lancaster bombers in ww2 & sadly didn't make it home I have interest in stuff like this. His crew actually flew some record amount of missions & I've found some websites etc about it all. I lived kinda near a museum which had a full Lancaster in there. I pointed out my grandfather's name & the old fellows there wanted to tell me all the things, bless em. They let me in it. I was like 5 years older than my grandfather was sitting in that seat. I can't even imagine.

    This story, this song, and even moreso, this video always bring me to tears. There are hundreds of inspiring stories in the Sabaton catalog (many of which also bring out tears), I think the fact that Oberleutnant Stigler wound up living not far from me, and his daughter is in the FB group just makes it so much more real.
    I only watch two "reaction channels"; yours and The Charismatic Voice. SO much more than just watching someone watch a video, and not contribute any substance.

    Probably been mentioned a few times by now, but I highly recommend the book "A Higher Call" by Adam Makos. IIRC he "rediscovered" the whole story and it's a very good read. I actually read the book first and then stumbled upon the Sabaton song.

    A few days ago I stumbled over the animated story video by coincidence in another reaction video. The song I knew before already, but, damn it, I never realized the touching story behind the lyrics. Then I saw the video and I was completely blown away - I still am after watching for several times. This is such a wonderful story. It definitely landed on rank #1 of my personal Sabaton top ten's list.
    I did not expect the end at all. I was already stoked by the first meeting of Charlie and Franz after 40 years, but that Franz's grandson listened to the song - without knowing that Sabaton did THIS story, and never ever met the band before turning the story into music - and shew his mom, who is Franz's daughter, that got me.
    Thanks for doing this one.
    Greetings from Germany to the USA.

    It was Charlie Brown's first mission, and after thay landed such a badly damaged aircraft back in England, Charlie and his crew were put up for decorations, but when the REMFs found out how it had got past the Atlantic wall, these were all denied, and the story hushed up (I guess they didn't want stories of the other side showing humanity getting out). That dive that Charlie managed to pull out of had them so low that they shook roof tiles off buildings, and the airframe was further damaged by the G needed to pull out of that overspeed dive. I know the B-17 intimaely as I've been a member of the preservation society which keeps "Sally B", the last airworthy B-17 in Europe, in flying condiion. She is best known for her starring role in the movie "Mempis Belle" which livery she still carries on one side. Prior to my disability, I had hopes of gaining enough hours and ratings to be part of her crew, and maybe even become one of the small group allowed to fly her, but alas, that eluded me. As a pilot I did have access to the cockpit though, which most only get to view from the rear access.
    Stigler said his CO had told the squadron that if he heard of them shooting a man in a parachute, he'd shoot them himself, and he viewed "Ye Olde Pub" as no more than their parachute that day. So he escorted them across the Atlantic wall and its heavy flak batteries, knowing that they could not survive any further gunfire but that the gunfire on the Atlantic wall would be halted by his presence. Flak was not precise enough to fire on one without endangering the other as long as he kept in tight formation with them.
    Ye Olde Pub flew from Kimbolton, not far from here, and I've cycled around what is lef of the airfield (not much).
    Clear skies and fly high genlemen!

      @@glennlamz7836 And that would have worried the Allies how, exactly?
      They were sending people to try and kill him themselves, daily!
      No, the reason was that it humanised the enemy, when the preferred idea was to dehumanise the enemy so that you could more easily encourage people to kill the enemy.

    Smoking Snakes is also one that always makes me tear up for some reason. They have a video from a bar where they sang live and had an actual member of the Smoking Snakes there to listen.
    (Smoking Snakes is about the Brazilian Expeditionary Force in WW2, patrolling around in Italy when allied forces landed there. It was a group of three guys that took on a Nazi patrol unit (who clearly out-numbered them). When they ran out of bullets they charged with Bayonets. They were killed and the Germans where so impressed by their bravery buried them and left a sign that said “Drei Brasilianischen Helden” (3 Brazilian Heroes).)
