About 10 years ago they changed recipe to use beef only. They had to sertu (thoroughly clean in accordance to muslim ritual) the kitchen and the dining hall and recertified for halal. Prior to that, every muslim that had ikea meatball, accidentally eat the pork. That and Cadbury...

In order to open The Restaurant in malaysia you need to get the Halal Certificate from The Government. The Sweden IKEA Restaurant has got the Halal Certificate already ,thats why you can see the Muslims customer at the restaurant.

Anyway, just wanted to point out that there was a sign behind Anna when you were eating that said "Vegan balls for meat lovers". So now I'm wondering if they substituted the beef at IKEA, or perhaps they have some kind of vegan promotion. Perhaps that's why you said it tasted different. As for sauce and gravy, I think it depends on the country. Here in Malaysia, if you talk about sauce, Malaysians are mostly familiar with Tomato (ketchup), chili, soy, oyster sauce. Everything else is gravy or soup. Curries would be gravy, anything more watery (or no coconut milk) would be called soup. Hence why the quizzed look on any local server's face sometimes when a foreigner wants more curry but says 'more sauce'. In Malay, we call any gravy 'kuah'. Pronounced 'kwooaah'. Anyway, just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoy your videos since you arrived. Lovely in it's simplicity is how I would describe it. Thanks for the insight!! I'm surprised the overcooked vegetables is normal. I thought the reason the vege are overcooked because they use frozen vegetables instead of fresh one. Now i will not complaint anymore hahaha There is a station for sauces-chilli sauce, ketchup and mustard. I will dip the meatballs in mustard 😅 and I don't take meatballs with the lingon jam...i know it is not the sweedish way so my apology. The poured on dish is gravy to me and the thicker om like jam ketchup, chilli sauce and mustard is sauce to me Used to have the daim cake but they recalled it and never brought in back...
In Sweden you can always get apple pie with vanilla sauce/custard is one of our favourite. But the best dessert is my own Anna apple cobbler with homemade custard 🤤😋
Thats not fish and chips British or otherwise, its served with tartar sauce not mayonaise. Also it comes with thick chips and usually use cod, plaice, haddock. Thats some weird version of fried fish and fries.

Sauces can be tomato ketchup, chilly sauce, brown sauce n sauce also can be for desserts like fruity sauce, hot fudge sauce, choc or caramel sauce etc while gravy is also a type of sauce, often prepared to accompany a dish like black pepper sauce or gravy for d steak or in Malay dishes, d meat or seafood is cooked in sauce or gravy from coconut milk like rendang, curry etc.
There's also an IKea in Johor Baru, Johor, southern state of M'sia... Ru heading to JB, ( CIQ@ custom)on ur way to S'pore? The train takes u straight fr the immigration checkpoint...it's very convenient, cozy, fast....but remember the things,food, stay, whatsoever, is 3x the currency rate of Ringgit!Anyway, travelling, spending,& exploring is experiencing fun beyond the horizons! I think IKEA missed a great opportunity in introducing Swedish bakes to the world. It’s inappropriate to call it a “Swedish Restaurant” or “Swedish Bistro” when there’s hardly anything Swedish in it. Many, many years ago, Ikea Restaurant used to serve Mazarin, Prinsesstårta, kanelbullar and DAIM cake but now they just serve a variation of a Daim cake and kanelbullar which are made by a huge local cake company 😅

The difference between sauce and gravy. In Malaysia its called Kuah so the liquid part of the dish - that's the Malaysian idea I think. But I can tell you the American idea of Gravy which is actually originally french the liquid fat portion that you render along with the "Fond" the remaining bits or the brown parts left in the pan after roasting ,sauteed or fried then thickened with "roux" (by roasting flour in the oil with butter and in that case lemon) often with milk or cream added or just water. Its all very french. Sauce is standalone product from chilis or tomatoes or some other substances soy , anchovies or fish. Sauce was never part of the cooking process of whatever dish but Gravy is made from the process of cooking the dish so as to not waste anything.

But I can tell you the American idea of Gravy which is actually originally french the liquid fat portion that you render along with the "Fond" the remaining bits or the brown parts left in the pan after roasting ,sauteed or fried then thickened with "roux" (by roasting flour in the oil with butter and in that case lemon) often with milk or cream added or just water. Its all very french. Sauce is standalone product from chilis or tomatoes or some other substances soy , anchovies or fish. Sauce was never part of the cooking process of whatever dish but Gravy is made from the process of cooking the dish so as to not waste anything.
The American idea is exactly how we do in Sweden.
