When people win the lottery they're all like "I'll pay my debts, buy a house and an Aston Martin!" Screw that. If I win the lottery I'm having a full range organ built into my house and I'll only ever play it with ALL the stops open. I will level cities with my music!

Played a pipe organ (way back when in Switzerland) that had some stops disabled because the organ had shattered stained glass windows. Honestly the experience was visceral...could feel the vibrations. Electronic simulators just don't do that. Amazing experience . Began my fascination with all handmade instruments and appreciation of the amazing people who created and crafted them and those who now restore and preserve them.

@@dafyd242 There is NO REAL 128" - STOP all over the world.
And only ONE Organ worldwide has a *SIMULATED* 128" - Stop.
This, the world's only fully developed subcontra quinte, can be found in USA,
Atlantic City, Convention Hall: *Diaphone Dulzian 42 2/3 '(ext. Of 64')* .
Thus, the organ of Convention Hall is the only one able to generate an acoustic
      128 '(64' + 42 2/3 '= 4 Hz differential tone to C).

My parish church organ is WAY WAY too big for the church. If you're sitting in certain acoustical sweet spots, the lower stops will give you heart palpitations. That said, they only play our organ at full power twice a year. Easter and Christmas. You can always tell when we have a guest player because they scare themselves the first time they play at the beginning of the introit and studder a few notes. lol

This may be apocryphal but a friend of mine from Texas says he was there when it happened. Many years ago a small church congregation in east Texas got a new pipe organ, but they are tricky to install. They had a parishioner who was an engineer. He agreed to install the organ and to get the pipes all hooked up. But the guy was not a specialist in pneumatics. They got it ready, installed some new decor, and fired it up. The moment the organist kicked in a 32' pedal stop and hit a particularly low note, the brand new stained glass windows flew out of their frames, pretty much in unison, because they didn't include a way for the pressure from the big pipes to leave the inside of the church. Little pipes? Not a problem. Big pipes? HUGE problem.

The organ at the Methodist Church I go to is medium large organ 2800 pipes 40 ranks and it's a Reuter Organ. I know It can get loud if the organist let it loose I asked asked her before to blow the roof of the church because I never heard one get loud in person she said it's to loud so she plays more conservative.

I know a former Lutheran teacher that was teaching at some place and they were tearing down the church. He asked the church what they were going to do with the pipe organ. They said junk it, but if you want it, take it. So now this guy lives on the old family farm and has a working pipe organ in it that he got for the hauling. That doesn't happen every day.

Because no matter how good it initially sounds, the electronic version has a digital roughness and artificial nature to it (however imperceptible) that people can't stand to hear for a long period of time.
It's not hard to find research reports about MP3 music being much more fatiguing to listeners than analog recordings for this very reason.

  • @ElJefe3126

Well, technically, the Grand Auditorium organ at the Atlantic City Convention Hall does have 128' resultant. It has a real (not a resultant) 64' stop, a diaphone in the lower registers and a dulzian in the upper registers (the ear can't discern the break at such low frequencies). The rank can be selected as either a diaphone or a dulzian, but the same pipes play either way. The kicker is that it also has a 42 2/3' "Dulzquint" stop, derived from the same rank.

    • @litz13
      @litz13 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The output end of that 64' pipe is over three feet across. A person can *easily* crawl inside (the top is a 90 degree bend to horizontal because the building isn't tall enough)

The pitch length theoretically required to attempt a resultant 256’ pitch is not 84-2/3’ but 85-1/3’ paired with the 128’ stop. From a practical point of view at those pitches a pipe that’s 8 inches short won’t be considered out of tune, especially since the pitch would be imperceptible to human ears.

"Bottom c" of a 128' flue pipe, either open or stopped would require an interior sq. ft. area roughly the size of a run-of-the-mill bedroom and require a languid about 18 inches thick and could only be reasonably made via "2 by 4" construction materials and techniques. I've worked on or with 5 pipe organs with 32' open flues of solid wood construction. The walls of these pipes at C1 are 2-1/2" thick, straight-grain Fir without a single knot. The arborcide accompanying the building of the 32' stops referred to would have been a horrific sap-curdling event.
The organist was accompanying the Eucharist in a R.C. church. Could the stops introduction mid way through be considered an act of *mass* destruction?

It would also vibrate the sliding door windows down below. Goodness, the power trip was unmatched!! And the sound of toe stud General #10 depress for full organ. That sound of all the stops being drawn. My oh my!! Nothing compares.

The priest wanted to test the full power, but my father denied as a low pitch pipe like that would have had a dangerous effect on the great church glass windows. The priest asked to try, the max: 7 windows out of sixteen fell: non one was in the church as it was night!

After midnight the organist attended by a guard, lifted the statue of Our Lady of Fatima from its pillar, reverently carrying her into the tiny chapel building for the night. The Curtis Organ in Irvine Auditorium at U of Penn has several 32' ranks. The bottom C on the pedal diapason takes a couple of seconds to achieve its resonant sound. The movie audience (1974) didn't perceive, notice, grasp that 15 second low pitch rumble introduction, until the high pressure trumpet pipes sounded for the Also Sprach Zarathustra theme. This was played on the Curtis Organ to introduce the 2001 Space Odessey movie. Richard Strauss' piece is written in C Major so it was easy to eyeball the orchestra score to transcribe for the organ. The timpani part was played on the lower C & G pedals. Everyone cheered. What a trip! It was nice to blow the dust out of the high pressure, seldom used trumpet stop (has it's own booster blower)

Wind pressure is what's measured in inches. Most organs run on 3-5", the loudest stop in the world runs on 100", with 15-25" being typical for that organ. 100" results in volume somewhere between a jackhammer and a jet engine.

There are plenty of organs with 64 s. Most are mitred, meaning bent or shaped to fit in the building. Many still are stopped or "gedeckt" which by stopping a pipe you by means of wave dynamics double the resonating length of the pipe. Few such as the us's national cathedral I believe and several other large cathedrals have true full ranks of 64' pipes straight to the ceiling and as wide as large garbage cans. Amazing.

    • @ngcolby
      @ngcolby ปีที่แล้ว +3

There are two organs on the entire planet with a 64' pipe. Two. The Midmer-Losh organ possesses a unique stop in the organ world, the 64-foot Diaphone-Dulzian in the Right Stage chamber (Pedal Right division), one of only two true 64-foot stops in the world. (The other 64-foot stop is the Contra-Trombone reed stop in the Sydney Town Hall Grand Organ.[11]) The stop is unique, because it is a reed/diaphone hybrid.
The Diaphone-Dulzian's low-C pipe is 59 feet (18 m) in length, weighs 3,350 pounds (1,520 kg), and produces a frequency of 8 Hz,[11] a tone that is more felt than heard; the sound of the vibrating pallet is described as "a helicopter hovering over the building". The pipe stands upright for about 40 feet (12 m), the remainder is mitered (turned) towards the Right Stage chamber's grill, like an upside-down L. All pipes taller than 32 feet (9.8 m) are designed in this manner. The two lowest pipes (CCCCC and CCCCC#) are fed by a single, dedicated 8-inch diameter wind line, operating on 35 inches of pressure. A second identical wind line feeds the remaining pipes.
Note that you can't hear 8hz as a note per se, it literally sounds like a chuffing helicopter by itself, you can find the video where they demonstrate this. Best used with other shorter stops. In reality, it's mostly useless. A 128' stop would be less than useless, a prop, nothing more.

I used to have a subwoofer with an 18" EV speaker in a 17 cu ft box, crossed over to 15" EV lower mids at 60hz, 6.5 upper mids and tweeter, all tri-amped. Probably would hit 32Hz. My synthesizer had a great sampled pipe organ patch and it really rattled the house!!! I actually got to play a pipe organ at Mackie Auditorium on the CU campus, as I had befriended the Dean of Organ Music. Unnnnn...believable!!!

Their encore was Nights In White Satin.
The last notes the keyboardist played,he nailed it .The coliseum had concrete floors and steps, but the note and volume played scared the crap outta me.The whole building trembled.
But damn,..the concert was stupendous !!!!!

The label says 128". A double inverted comma indicates inches, feet are abbreviated as a single inverted comma, so 128 feet would be written 128'. 128 inches is 10ft 8in, not bad considering most big cathedral organs bottom out at 16ft or 32ft. They may have bigger stops, but they don't actually have pipes that long, it's achieved by combining smaller pipes.

Just a technical note: the length of an organ pipe has no direct relationship to loudness. The world's loudest pipe set is the Grande Ophecleide (16 foot) stop of the Atlantic City (NJ) convention hall Midmer Losh. The second loudest pipe set is in St. Bartholemews Episcopal Church in New York City. (Guiness Records)

I remember a tv show from years ago that involved a pipe organ that caused a ceiling to collapse. I think it was one of those crime/detective shows, can't remember exactly. But it was based on real incidents where the vibrations from church and movie theater pipe organs (back before the advent of "talkies") would cause cumulative damage to the ceiling and walls, sometimes leading to the plaster falling down during a performance.

The lowest human hearing goes is 16hz and more likely 20hz for most people. So routing the sound from the 128' pipe to my headphones can have no perceivable effect. I suppose people can feel it in their guts if the intensity is high enough.

Extremely low frequencies are often used in movies to create a sense of unease, you don't hear it but you feel it. Not sure why you would want a church organ to have that effect though

@Daedalus00000 Quite correct as far as I know, except... I believe there are more than two 64' stops in the world. I believe you can achieve the same effect with what I think is referred to as a stopped 32' arrangement. That is, the length of the pipe is effectively doubled by stopping the top of the pipe, blocking it. I thought that St. Bart's in NYC had a 64' stop.
