  • James David Christie (Boston Symphony organist) “pulls out all the stops” on the Brombaugh Opus 9 organ installed in Green Music Center's Schroeder Hall. Built in 1972, the Opus 9 is the work of John Brombaugh, an American builder whom Christi calls “the master builder.” Christie fondly remembers practicing “for hours and hours” on this very organ when he was a student at Oberlin Conservatory and it was installed in a Baptist Church in Toledo, Ohio. On Saturday, August 23, 2014, he will play it again as he performs this pipe organ's inaugural concert in Schroeder Hall. Video taken by Geneva Anderson, ARThound, 8.18.2014

It just demonstrates how a superbly well built, intelligently specified and well sited instrument doesn't require hundreds of speaking stops to sound absolutely thrilling. Where I live here in the UK, we have, in All Saints church, Hastings, a Father Henry Willis organ, built around 1890s. It has three manuals and about 25 speaking stops and apart from the blower, is fully manual/tracker activated. The full organ sound is quite remarkable for the size of the instrument , and has attracted organists and enthusiasts from all over the United Kingdom. The 12th century Church, which is its home, has the ideal acoustic, giving this 'Willis' organ its unique sound.

Not a lot of stops to pull out. Organ sounds shrill, has no bite

I've played this organ, and can say that this recording doesn't give an accurate impression of its actual sound, which is actually very beautiful.
