Did you know there are two kinds of Manapua type buns? One enclosed at the top? & one enclosed at the bottom? (I tend to like the one enclosed on the bottom cuz it’s lesser dough to chew thru; & cuz they’re usually more airy & pairs better to me with char su Pork) 7-11 was the original commercial one that used to be enclosed at the bottom. But? My recent trip? They changed to enclosed at top? Siao Pio I think is the name type? And they were big buns at 7-11 where I used to work at, yet airy dough means less heavy on your tummy. (7-11 ones used to be color coated buns to let customers know what type you were getting. Red colored bun, char su, Yellow colored bun for Curry, purple for sweet tarro paste) And Hawaiian businesses do have the “bottom type” to order online with Portuguese Sausage & Zippys frozen chili meals (it costs more to send to the mainland fyi) lol…. I used to get two spam musabi, one teriyaki chicken musabi, & one or two manapua char su pork bun when I got off work to snack on at home lol….
Definitely childhood comfort food!! My auntie used to wrap the entire musubi in nori and we used to take it on our fishing trips! Thanks guys for the walk down nostalgia lane!!
Today I got a musubi at Malama market in Haleiwa. I took it home. Then I cook two eggs over easy, and I dip my musubi in the egg yolk. Hawaii is Paradise
I swear I ALWAYS get hungry when I see both of y’all throw down! And yes, OG for sure and can’t live without Spam! Hope to see a new PAMPANGA Kitchen video soon!!!!!!
Hi to the cutest couple on TH-cam! My husband and I loved this one! He's a Spam fan big time! Great choices and your descriptions were spot on... thanks so much! 🎉❤
Good job. Your take and reviews on Hawaii's SPAM culture was awesome! Just seeing the diversity of "SPAM" and various other meats just says a lot about culture infusion here in Hawaii, a place where we call home!😃
I grew up on Spam, but never had a Musubi until about 6 or 7 years ago when a co-worker made them for a potluck, so good. My favorite way to eat Spam is cutup, fried and cooked into scrambled eggs, yum! As I've gotten older I have to say I do like the Lite Spam (NOT less sodium) whenever I can get it.
Definitely poke, variety of musubi, shave ice, ramen, malasadas. I recommend oxtail soup from The Alley, poke from Tamura’s, Onoya Ramen, and Leonard’s Malasada.
Awesome job Foodie Ohana ! I miss the mom & pop businesses ! Wow Cheese Burger Musubi !!! Yes ! Nothing but the homemade simple musubi ! Mahalo Amanda & Felix !
Guys, good work on your spam musubi tour!! Here in Okinawa, you will see spam oniguri at the local convienience and some grocery stores. It usually comes with egg and spam. I've eaten it a few times. It's good, especially with egg. Take care!
Hi Amanda and Felix. I don’t know how many spam musubi I have made in my lifetime. 🥹I make a Teri sauce and cook the spam in it. I actually place half of the rice in the mold then the spam and the rest of the rice. So the spam is in the center. There are so many different types of spam musubi. I am loving the unagi. Thank you 13:47 for the video. Gotz Grindz is in my neighborhood. Love and blessings❤️🙏😊
Love spam musubi but it's hard to beat the ones made with love at home. My kids grew up on my version...bottom layer rice, chopped takuan next layer, another thin layer of rice, furikake, then spam that was marinated in yoshida's bbq sauce, followed with a full nori wrap. Now I want a spam musubi!
Aloha, Amanda & Felix...I would love to see more episodes (parts 2, 3 etc.) to this video in regard to SPAM MUSUBI. So many places that make some great Spam Musubi. KAMAMALU soooo ono. My go to place lately has been KOMEDOKORO M's in Waikiki (Eaton square). They definitely would rank up there in the best rice category. Super super fresh and they sell out every day, you have to go early. Taniokas has a good one too. Never heard of Gotz Grindz. Would like to see that place in a follow-up. When I go to 7-11 been getting the Spam Katsu Musubi lately. Iyasume - love the takuwan radish - spam musubi (nice crunch) but find them on the smaller size musubi's. You both did a great job on this one. Awesome, love this content. THANK YOU!
Amanda and Felix love watching all your episodes on utube, it's very entertaining plus it makes me feel happy because you guys keep me informed on all the grindz going on in different places in Hawaii. Thank you so much for sharing and looking forward to your next utube episode. Aloha and Ahui Hou Malama Pono from Texas. Army of one
hahaha Kukui Plaza! My eye doctor was there, I remember that store! Never got the musubi though cuz, well, yeah, just make um at home! lol loving this tour, hell yeah! funny enough, my mum used to make them in the triangle form, fully wrapped, but with the spam chopped up a bit and mixed in with the rice!
I remember learning to make Spam musubi in the early 1990s when I worked at Salt Lake Elementary School and we sold them for $1 for fundraising at a school fair. At first we were cutting 7 slices of Spam per can, but then someone said to make it 9 slices so we could make more musubi (and money). (I hear the cheap places with thin pieces of Spam actually cut 11 slices per can!) We lightly pan-fried the Spam in teriyaki sauce and molded the lightly salted rice by hand and then wrapped it around the center with a single piece of nori that was cut from a larger sheet. So much labor, but so 'ono! And still easier and less expensive than making makizushi or inari (cone) zushi which were commonly sold. We sold about 100 in less than an hour. When the plastic molds became available at Daiei (now Don Quijote), my mom bought some so we could make it at home. The double (or longer) molds make things go so much faster. My friends from Japan first tasted Spam musubi in Hawai'i, and they bought molds and cans of SPAM to take back so they could make it themselves, so I know it's a Hawai'i creation!
Aloha Foodie Ohana! SPAM Musubi episode is awesome. It has a historical and onolicious vibe. I wish we had the amount of varieties you all have. They looked amazing. Mahalo for sharing and always taking one for the foodie ohana. I make my own SPAM Musubi, so I got some great ideas. Love you guys! 🤙🏽❤️
Aloooooha 🥰! 🤣from Jacksonville Florida. My mom made musubi for us when we went to the drive-in movies and a bucket of fried chicken. those were the best childhood memories.💯🤙🤙🤙Mahalo!
When I was young on Kauai they would wrap the entire length with nori wrap but somewhere along the way they switched to these little strips, I miss the full nori wraps.
I remember being a young girl… a long long long time ago eating a version of musubi that my mom made 😂 the things that you eat, smell and experience that always stays with you. Nostalgia is really important… also it would be awesome if you did a Huli-Huli Chicken version too. You both are so amazing and your bloopers make me laugh 😂
I concur with the timing of the "invention" of the spam musubi attributed to Kauai in the mid-1980's. I am an oldie- 1985 Oahu HS grad. Never came across a spam musubi- 7-11 or potluck, etc till the 2nd half of the 80's. I would say became a common staple all over the place by the early 90's. When I grew up, spam was fried (no teri sauce) and just another breakfast meat choice.along with vienna sausage, Portuguese sausage, and bacon.
Hi! Loved this epi! Like a few others, I think you should do a few more parts. There's so many more options lol! Maybe you could do a "top tier" kinda challenge with your number one pick from each day :) N go to Gotz Grindz early 😂
As someone who used to work in Shirokiya, 2016-18...by default, would have to go w/Iyasume. Used to buy 3-4 different varieties of musubi for lunch, at least, 2x/week!-lol...BTW...EVERY musubi is/was hand-made! 2d fave choice would have to 7-11. Honorable mention would have to be Pa'ala'a Kai Mini-mart, whenever can get down thataway....Good 2C you guys again!
I like less nori seaweed on mine…the first place me and my wife went to while we did laundry on our last vacation to Hawaii that’s dope you guys go there too 🤙🏽🔥🔥🔥
I just made 15 spam musubi yesterday. Full coverage of nori, with the spam in between the rice (like a sandwich) furikake, no sauce. Now i need some tea 😂
Amanda and Felix, I just wanna take this time to let you know I love watching your content. You guys are always supporting local businesses and recommending great hidden gems. I first discovered your channel when I stumbled upon your Japan vids (we went 11/2023) >_< & I've been keeping up with yall ever since xD. we will be going to Oahu next month for my wife's 30th and the timing of these video releases could not have been any more convenient. looking forward to the next vid! also congrats on the marriage :3
My favorite is the 7-11 spam katsu musubi. I think they are the only ones who sell it that way. As for spam thickness, most probably use the spam cutter for consistency.
Definitely need part 2 & 3 because there are so many places that offer spam musubi. For me my go to is Mana Musubi on S King street. The original name used to be Manabu Musubi but it got sold and became Mana Musubi. Loved their rice though the spam choices are regular spam or teriyaki spam. My other go to is at the Waikele golf course. Their musubi is a good portion and they mixed furikaki with rice and pickled daikon. Power up before your golf game… so good. Though am not sure if they still offer it after pandemic. 🌺🌺🌺
Another great video! We juz realized there’s Iyasume inside of Ala Moana! My brother in law got us walking all around the mall to go to another location! 🤦🏻♀️
I prefer Iyasume because their Spam/Rice ratio is close to what I grew up on and what I make at home: 1" of rice with Spam thickness of 7 slices per can; Spam slices sauteed in a fry pan with a little shoyu; nori width about 1/2 the length of the Spam.
In DT a couple spots up from fort street cafe is a place called JoJo's. My favorite spam musubi, 1.50 I think. Mine used to be Mitsuken but they charge almost $4 now so I never get it anymore.
I do love the best of series. Would love for you guys to do a Cold Ginger Chicken one. Growing up On On Chinese was my go to spot, but then it changed and hasn't been the same. I've tried several other places when I've been back home, like Asian Mix, but they all are lacking something or have some odd kind of after taste. Was hoping Eater would do a series on it like they did for Roast Duck etc, but I haven't seen one yet.
I was stationed in kaneohe bay while on the marine corps. I love hawaii and the people. My favorite thing to eat was kailua pig and a a fresh warm fluffy chicken manapua 🤤🤤🤤👍 i miss it. Mahalo or sharing bruh 😁🤙
I used to teach ukulele to kids at elementary schools, and got "tricked" into starting a musubi stand/tent at a local Hulu/Poly/Hawaiian Festival here in Los Angeles. ended up doing it for several years as a hobby business. I was lamenting that musubi was so hard to find at the festival! one vendor had it way bottom of list of mainly plate lunch like an afterthought. I know, right‽‽‽ The director of the ukulele for kids program used his mental/Kumu powers and made it seem like it would be easy to do... it wasn't, but lots of good memories. Flattop/griddle grilled with teri charred into the spam was the only way we cooked the spam . has to be that way IMO. we had spam sandwiched between furikake mix rice and full nori wrapped we called OnoKine and a teri charred spam on diabetes-size block plain rice and nori strip we called Traditional Kine... that's all we sold for the first couple years... it got super popular at the festival and the newly formed 626 Night Market we also tried. LA didn't know/understand the beauty of spam and rice when we started... but I'm pretty sure we converted a lot of people. good times...
You gotta have the teri stains on the rice- and the spam gotta hang over little bit - nowadays every maker trying save some money - the slice of spam and the egg getting thinner.
Too bad Walk-in-Liquor on Auahi is gone. They cooked all their spam in the same residual oil which gave it the best saltiness and had the perfect crust. Their pan literally had an inch of spam oil in it. Musubi Cafe on Seaside and Kaheka Don Quijote both have super good quality rice. Kalihi boy myself but only tried Kamamalu this past year. No complaints.
Good review. The true question might be, if offered a Spam Musubi when one is hungry, would we really turn down a Spam Musubi? It's a anytime, anywhere meal. If it was just a musubi, it would still be good, especially if it's homemade. A couple decades ago, my friends and I went night time fishing in the country and as we sat on the beach, and got hungry, one of the guys broke out his mom's box of goodies. Spam and regular musubi's. Sitting on the beach, next to a warm fire, listening to the waves, waiting for the line to ring on a fish bite, those musubi's were great.
Hmmm... did not get my notification for this video. Still subscribed too!. WTH??? I'm an all over nori gal with the spam in between 2 layers of rice - that way the spam to rice ratio is better. IMO. Also, controversial, I do not like 7-11's...way too much rice...I'll just make my own. Lol
Brought back memories and in my opinion, mom and pop stores or manapua trucks were the best spots for musubi. Mahalo!
Whole nori all the way! Need to taste it with each bite.
Gotta love the nori 🍙👌🏼
100%, that's how I had it growing up!
finally! been waiting for this. love you guys!
Absolutely LOVED THIS 🙌🏻
Do a Best Of Maunapua Series!
Fluffy sweet airy bun with char sui Pork stuffing! 🤤
You got it! 🤙

Can't go wrong the musubi! 👍🤙
I used to think 711 made the best or Kahalu'u Hygienic store. But now I love Tamuras.
I like it with egg, like a whole breakfast 😋
We gotta try those ones! 🤙
Salivating on my phone right now 🤤
🤤🤤🤤
Wish you guys can do these “best of” for the other islands as well
We’re from Oahu so we’re not familiar with the bests of other islands 😅 maybe one day!
Today I got a musubi at Malama market in Haleiwa. I took it home. Then I cook two eggs over easy, and I dip my musubi in the egg yolk. Hawaii is Paradise
Sounds onolicious🤤🤤🤤

was waiting for someone to comment Middle street ...yessah!
I used to make spam musubi here in So Cal to take to the drag races and fishing on the boat in the ocean. It really hits the spot in both places!
Good job. Your take and reviews on Hawaii's SPAM culture was awesome! Just seeing the diversity of "SPAM" and various other meats just says a lot about culture infusion here in Hawaii, a place where we call home!😃
We tried to incorporate everything about musubi on this one! Stay tuned for pt2! Mahalo! 🤙

Iyasume Cafe was the BEST when my husband & I searched back in 2017😋😋
Mines was Tonioka’s and 711 since they were next to each other and we used to literally live across the bridge😂
Yup kamamalu is my favorite spot to get my spam musubi, because I grow up in that area 👍👍
As someone who used to work in Shirokiya, 2016-18...by default, would have to go w/Iyasume. Gotta love that sticky Teri sauce 👌🏼🤤
You guys gotta come try our musibis!! Kapolei Golf Club snack shop 🤙🤙
Love plenty rice with plenty Teri sauce with a fat slice of spam 😋

There was a little store right next to my apartment on pauahi st when I was a kid, it was really good but unfortunately it's gone now
Our neighborhood stores were always the best!
I like the plain spam musubi at foodland mililani. We made with the whole nori.
Sounds good! 👍
In DT a couple spots up from fort street cafe is a place called JoJo's. My favorite spam musubi, 1.50 I think. Mine used to be Mitsuken but they charge almost $4 now so I never get it anymore.
Mahalo for the rec 👌🏼🤤 wow $4 is pretty steep😅
I do love the best of series. Would love for you guys to do a Cold Ginger Chicken one. Growing up On On Chinese was my go to spot, but then it changed and hasn't been the same. I've tried several other places when I've been back home, like Asian Mix, but they all are lacking something or have some odd kind of after taste. Was hoping Eater would do a series on it like they did for Roast Duck etc, but I haven't seen one yet.
That sounds like an idea! 👍
LA didn't know/understand the beauty of spam and rice when we started... but I'm pretty sure we converted a lot of people. good times...
how's about best beef stew?
Great idea! Mahalo 🤙🏻
Love it...top garlic chicken? Lol
Kamamalu is my fav, crispy too
👌🏼 gotta love kamamalu🍙
Easy, now try find edible manapua in s. California.
I'd also like chili rice in Waikiki, pref from convenience store.
Full nori, Spam cooked with a splash of teriyaki sauce, furikake on rice. Kimchee on the side. Eight slices per can.
Kimchi on the side sounds like a game changer🤤🍙
You gotta have the teri stains on the rice- and the spam gotta hang over little bit - nowadays every maker trying save some money - the slice of spam and the egg getting thinner.
Miss the days when the spam was nice & big😭
My go to for spam musubi is either Masa and Joyce or Middle St. Market
Your videos should be sponsored by Spam! They should pay you for your enthusiasm.
I had the ingredients, so I stopped the video, and went and made me a couple musibi's hahaha, video made me ono for em.
Yay!! Homemade is the best🍙🤤
That musubi b roll tho 🤤🤤🤤
Hits the spot! 🤤
Reg musubi- kamamalu hands down.
Teri style- harrys liquor next to Harrys cafe..
That sounds like a flavorful musubi🤤🍙
Good review. The true question might be, if offered a Spam Musubi when one is hungry, would we really turn down a Spam Musubi? It's a anytime, anywhere meal. If it was just a musubi, it would still be good, especially if it's homemade. A couple decades ago, my friends and I went night time fishing in the country and as we sat on the beach, and got hungry, one of the guys broke out his mom's box of goodies. Spam and regular musubi's. Sitting on the beach, next to a warm fire, listening to the waves, waiting for the line to ring on a fish bite, those musubi's were great.
Any musubi, any time 👍
Felix do you remember jamies snack shop in pauoa?? they had da best spam musubis 😢
That's my hs friends grandma place! Their food was so Ono!
wow thats crazy you grad from roosevelt?
Delicacies 😮
Super yummy🍙🤤
Hmmm... did not get my notification for this video. Still subscribed too!. WTH??? I'm an all over nori gal with the spam in between 2 layers of rice - that way the spam to rice ratio is better. IMO. Also, controversial, I do not like 7-11's...way too much rice...I'll just make my own. Lol
Gotta make your own for the perfect ratio 👌🏼 sounds like you make a bomb spam musubi Carol 🤤
@AmandaFelixEats lol. Try the Spam roll from Sushiya in Kaimuki - my family gets them when traveling back to the mainland.
Me go you go Higoto🤣🤣🤣🤣
definitely fried spam and full nori wrap, no sauce or maybe a little shoyu for carmelization.
Sounds good! 🤙
If you make another episode for musubis, try Masa and Joyce in Kaneohe.
For sure! Mahalo! 🤙
