The irony here is Christopher left the show because he didn’t get more money so he went to smaller things since svu was the biggest show he worked on and made less money than he did when he was on svu. Not going to lie, now that Stabler is back, a part of me wishes that he would get back to his old desk, be Liv's partner again and Cragen, Munch, Brian, and Jeffries will come walking back through those doors and we'll have the 1999 squad back. Just like old times. 😭
Not only that, Munch & Cragen are retired on the show. It would be nice to see Elliot come back to SVU, but I'm sure as long as Organized Crime keeps going on, they'll have plenty of crossovers together. Also, TV Guide confirmed that SVU has been renewed for 2 more seasons!
@Cammacho Dennison Her head was spinning in all directions and seeing her old partner made what she was feeling worse in a sense..I can't imagine being a partner to a fellow detective for what 2 decades in real life or on a show and one day I come into work only for my CO to tell me that my partner has walked away from everything.
I guess it wasn't difficult, as the actors do have a bond in real life, so the departure was painful and the return likewise. It wasn't something they had to fake.

The loose yourself principle is the value proposition part which perhaps inspires writers and director to increase involvement. Without believable screen presence the scene falls short. Because it works we blog and chat.

When I tell you, I legit LITERALLY SCREAMED that at the screen when she said that! I was like "Olivia, YES YOU DO!!!! Liv, don't do this! We NEED THIS!!!"
He can't return to SVU. As he said in this scene to Olivia "It's your house" which it is. He would be a supporting player in an ensemble on that show. The only way he could come back to the L&O universe is by headlining on his own show.

If Meloni wasn't interested in coming back on a permanent basis, he could certainly work as a re-ocurring presence on SVU popping in from time to time in a guest appearance capacity. But clearly both the actor and the producers of L&O had bigger plans up their sleeves.
The sheer history and chemistry and bond between these two after over twenty years...takes my breath away. Olivia and Elliot are soulmates, there's no other way to put it.
I could literally feel the tension and awkwardness as if I were there. Amazing acting by all. But I’m looking forward to Elliot chasing McDermott. McDermott is so underrated. I’m canceling my life until the end of the 1st season.

The amount of growth after he departed is so prevalent. She was a detective while he was still on the show and afterwards she still was until Cragen retired and she took over she became a sergeant, lieutenant, and captain.. she bonded with other co-workers such as Amanda, Nick, and Carisi. She adopted Noah. She went through a lot of ups and downs after he departed. I can’t be the only one who thinks it’ll take time to mend their relationship..
I remember when the show came back for that season and Cragen told her he just up and left. She didn’t even know why and her anger towards him leaving was showcased through that season.
He left after watching that little girl get shot in the station.... We all knew why. I think it's dumb he's back, actually. Stabler is a hammer who sees every problem as a nail.

@Kenya Garcia Stabler left SVU during the 12th season after he shot that girl whose mother was killed right in front of her, and that was 15 or 20 years ago..but for Liv it feels like it's been a lot longer she went 2 more decades without her partner.
Would've been even more like old times had Munch, Casey, Alex, Cragen, Warner and Wong were there instead of the other random characters I don't even know lol. But other then that seeing these two together again and Fin really felt like the magic had returned.
I feel that this crossover really cemented what Chris Meloni said about Elliot’s feelings for Olivia. That he loved her but didn’t know where to place it. And all throughout these two episodes you could see that playing out. He wants to be there for his wife, but at the same time...it’s Olivia...and the way he delivered lines like “if I heard your voice”... 😩😩 oohh says so much. And then you see he’s trying to get close to her again, and shows this by standing close to her, trying to make small talk, grabbing her by the arm, etc. But Olivia can’t just yet. And the two biggest gestures of all...the hug and the letter. The hug shows that despite all that time, they’re there for each other in a way no one else can be. And the letter...I REALLY want to know what he wrote in that letter.
For reals!!! Stabler and Olivia were that married couple that could never be together physically due to their circumstances but shared an emotional love that no one could come close to. And after all the terrible atrocities they dealt with they always had each other to console. When Stabler left Olivia had to live through this crappy dark world by herself and found a way to move forward and has a son now. But after Stabler came back Olivia came back. The emotional vulnerable Olivia came back after 10 years and she wanted to hold Stabler and never let go but she couldn't because of Cathy and the pain she felt. Now that Cathy is gone , it will be interesting to see how they can repair their relationship. They have both lost two people that they did love dearly and they will never date again because the truth is they love each other and are SOULMATES. And hopefully they will have a deep conversation once their sounds have healed and confess the feelings they have felt since they became partners two decades ago!
He needed to leave Olivia in order to be happy and content with his wife. Let that sink in. "I was afraid if I heard your voice, I wouldn't be able to leave." Olivia didn't even want Elliot meeting Noah, because she doesn't want Noah to get attached to Elliot like she did, she knows if she lets him back in, its game over. She might actually realize her feelings.
The regret in his eyes as he watches them walk away I think that was her way of saying you’re not a part of my life anymore ... they are both good actors.
I hope Noah and Stabler have some scenes together!!! He would be the perfect father figure and if Olivia and Stabler ended up together and were Noah's parents I might legitimately cry 😢❤️
Plus, maybe, she doesn't want Noah speak about their friends, Barba and Stone for example. Stone was very close to Noah who called him 'coach'.. And of course, Stabler would have been the happiest man on earth if someone would have called him that way. Basically, Elliott is not yet part of her family, it's too soon. +if he is in the habit to walk away any time he thinks he has to, no need to introduce him to Noah who needs stability to grow.
I kno Liv is pissed at Elliot for leaving, that's understandable, but you can't blame him. He shot and killed a kid. That's not something you can just bounce back from. That's a lifetime nightmare fuel

A very good scene. You felt the hurt in Olivia's voice. Maritska Hartigay deserves every Emmy award she can get for playing Olivia Benson. She is excellent.
The way they talk to each other when Stabler apologize to Olivia telling her he wouldn't have been able to leave if he had a just heard her voice and her saying that he was the most important thing in her life totally priceless and pure gold they need to be together bensler forever!!!!!!

@@happybkwrm When you work that intensely together, this type of strong attachment occurs. The drama was always playing around with Liv and Elliot's wife. Interesting that now- upon Stabler's return, his wife is now dead....We'll see what develops. When a significant relationship ends abruptly without real explanation, it's hard to say it can't be re-ignited.
I think it's good to have Stabler back but you have to admit that Olivia shouldered the show since season 13 and basically saved it. When no one believed in SVU without Stabler, Benson proved that her character was just getting started and gave us magnificent seasons, with an evolution of herself unthinkable. Today she is a Captain and Stabler a mere detective. Long live Olivia!
the only reason Stabler remained a detective because remember he retired from the NYPD in 2011 for nearly 10 years he was off the force, once he rejoined in 2019 in Rome, he still had the rank of Senior Detective, he should at least be Seargant, he would have been promoted if he stayed
Yeah, fun fact: Mariska nearly left the show halfway through season 13, they were going to replace her with a new detective but decided not to because they’d lose two of their best actors in just one year. The ratings would have definitely fallen through

The various channels that run SVU in syndication have been showcasing the seasons Elliott appeared in & highlighting some of his & Liv’s best episodes. USA, ION channel, almost every day, for the past several weeks.
This scene explains their situation perfectly. It wasn’t just the fact that Elliot left, it was the fact that he left without even talking to Liv. Hell Olivia had to find out from Captain Cragen, and she and Elliot hadn’t talked until tonight. At least with Munch and Cragen they at least told her.
Nobody wants to look at Stabler's side of this. He had to shoot a 16 year old girl who had been traumatized by losing her mother to a rapists, he probably was through with it. He took what sanity he had left and moved on to be happy with his family. Man had a wife and five kids to think about. I missed Elliot like crazy but I understood it. He could've told her but I felt that pain in his voice when he said he couldn't bear to tell her.

@@bhd7721 putting them together would destroy their chemistry. Their chemistry is about friendship not telling each other what to do which is what will inevitably happen. Elliot will make Olivia stay away from bad situations and Olivia will get offended thinking that Elliot thinks she’s incompetent. They are friends and that’s how it needs to stay.
I feel like half of the scene was not acting, because not only were Elliot and Liv so close, but so were Mariska and Chris. And Elliot/Chris leaving the show had a profound effect on Liv/Mariska. I'm sure some of the emotions were real.
True, in a recent interview Mariska said that she was heartbroken when Christopher left and had to try her best to do the show without him. They are very close friends in real life, so not seeing him nearly as often had to have been sad for her. At least she got to see him in real life though.

Mariska said Elliott was the love of Olivia’s life in an interview once. And there are deleted scenes where she implies her feelings were similar to what Carisi and Rollins have
It is romantic love to me. They want each other but there are outside factors that prevent that. He couldn’t just up & leave his wife & family to be with Liv

Its so dope to see them together again, its always felt sooo unfinished, they made Stabler disappear which was traumatic for all of us too! the way they look at each other is genuine magic
I thought to myself 'no way will they explain away 10 years to anyone's satisfaction'--but damn, they did it. Great emotions, great chemistry...I think this story is one of the greatest love stories on tv not involving sex.
I just finished Watching SVU and organized crime. The return of Elliot Stabler was more than what I had anticipated. I have chills. You better have some tissues ready. I can’t wait for more. Well done.
Coming from someone who has had mostly male friends throughout my teenage & adult years and whose best friend of about a decade is also a male; these two are definitely in love with each other. Just the way they look at each other, how they have such an emotional impact on one another that just hearing the others voice would cause them to completely change their mind on certain issues. Someone you love platonically doesn't usually have that kind of effect on you. Just my thoughts.

“I think if I talked to you about....” and then Olivia interrupts him...he was about to say something about how he felt about her...and Kathy also said Elliot kept telling her that they haven’t talked and she said she couldn’t believe it...seems like she was jealous and that may be part of his reason why he left...
That was incredible acting by Mariska and why she gets the big bucks, the disorientation at the end was a fantastic choice. Chris Meloni was my favorite detective growing up, such an amazing scene.
I am SO GLAD Olivia didn't and isn't forgiving him so fast. I love the utter heartbreak and confusion and anger and hurt and pride that is exhibited. Stabler NEEDS to understand the pain he caused her.
Not only that, their lives are more complicated now. The four older Stabler kids would probably understand them getting together eventually, but Eli and Noah are gonna be interesting.
Havent watched this yet - but I’m so excited! If the whole episode has this feel to it, it’s going to be great! I’m so glad they took the time to acknowledge what happened, how Stabler left - that when he came back it wasn’t going to be all rainbows and roses. Their relationship needs healing and its great the writers are honoring that
He didn't mean it that way. He meant that when he was part of the squad he had free run, but since he left he is no longer an insider with the squad. It's like leaving a job/company you were at for years and then after a few years coming back. It's the same place but you can't go walking around like you used to.

I was emotional but not yet in tears.....until Liv got a call, stood up, and just so lost mumbling "where's the exit...". Like she was so hurt and needed to escape from that situation w/ Elliot but couldn't find the way out. It was so heartbreaking to see her so lost like that. absolutely
What a night!!! I had set a reminder on my phone for this. I ain't been keeping up with this show much but I had to get back in for this and this scene here was probably the main highlight.
I have never seen Post Stabler but even I felt the impact of how long he's been gone and was so hyped to see him return and reunite with Liv and Fin too. SVU needed this BADLY! I haven't seen people this hype for this show in many years.
Yeah..more than ten years later and the chemistry is still there. There DID that! Its like they have this bond that's on another level. It's really fun to watch! also omg at Liv being so dizzy after this conversation, she couldn't even find the exit.
Season 2 of OC and I am still here... This is hands down one THE most heart wrenching scenes EVER! Unable to defend himself, Stabler could only fall back on his raw emotion and it is all so intense!
I am just SO happy we got to see her confront him about the way he left. I was so afraid they'd skip over that. Also glad she hasn't forgiven him yet. No doubt she will, eventually.
I think it’s going to take more than just 8 episodes to get them on the right track. Like she said he was the single most important person in her life and he disappeared. Had he not left her she likely would not have been kidnapped (twice). She needed him more than anything with Lewis and he was not there. It’s going to take time for them to get right. And rightfully so. If the writers rush into it, it will ruin the show.
I really love how in these scenes with Stabler I don’t see “Captain Benson” I just see Liv. Both of them are more open, vulnerable and deep when they’re together. Their history just cuts through all the walls that they’ve built since being separated and in these moments, they’re just Liv and El.
This was actually personal. There was emotional pain when Christopher Melloni left Law & Order SVU before. They weren’t just acting here, and the longtime viewers could feel this moment.
He was more than a brother to her, he was her person, her job was one half of her life and he was the other half (before Noah came along) and then he was just gone.
Wow that hit me like a ton of bricks really glad the reunion wasn’t all puppies and roses it was real and genuine there was hurt resentment and regret behind it all and none if it was all resolved right away.
Chris and Mariska continued to see each other after Elliot left the show, and yet during this scene they’re upsetting and brutally so convincing, I’m voting for a EMMY for these two
@Abby Castle I wouldn't call myself a rabbid shipper I'm just stating what I see. the dude literally said he loved her while he was looking right at her in the last episode we saw and didn't even try to cover. In front of his kids one of which even asked Liv back in the day if they had ever slept together no less. Then when he tried to call her after the I love you Olivia wouldn't take his calls after. If he just meant it platonically and she knew that why would she be actively laying awake avoiding his calls? If you really think they aren't building up to putting them together at this point you're blind.
@Abby Castle there are little comments here and there throughout the first 12 seasons and even now with his return that show they do actually love each other. Everyone sees it. Fin catching stabler up on the last 10 years, he won’t tell Elliot who the guy was because he knows he will get upset. Wheatley even knows. Back in season 7 when she didn’t shoot the suspect because she could hit stabler, he says I know you would have taken the shot she says no I wouldn’t have. You expect me to cause your death? What about your kids (not family, just the kids) what about me? He got jealous anytime she was seeing someone or flirting. Cassidy when they were first sleeping together he calls her out on it. That fbi dude, he got jealous anytime they talked and actively intervened. There are plenty of scenes and small things to suggest their love was more than platonic. Her reaction when he left was not just a long time partner retiring.
This broke me. I have always admired these two. This is one of the most important character portrayals on television because these two are not just professionals they are the closest and deepest of friends. More than a spouse, I want that kind of friendship.

2 absolutely perfect episodes tonight. They have such great chemistry - the entire 2 hours was so emotional and I loved every moment of it. Really want to know what's in the letter. Hope they don't rush anything between the 2 of them this season. He did just bury his wife and the next 7 episodes to fix their friendship would be a nice pace.

The amount of growth after he departed is so prevalent. She was a detective while he was still on the show and afterwards she still was until Cragen retired and she took over she became a sergeant, lieutenant, and captain.. she bonded with other co-workers such as Amanda, Nick, and Carisi. She adopted Noah. She went through a lot of ups and downs after he departed. I can’t be the only one who thinks it’ll take time to mend their relationship..
Don't forget, Fin also became a Sargeant as well, and stayed as Olivia's Ride or Die
100% honest I’m a 42 yr old guy and I almost cried multiple times during this episode. We need more of Benson and Stabler together.

He left after watching that little girl get shot in the station.... We all knew why. I think it's dumb he's back, actually. Stabler is a hammer who sees every problem as a nail.

Would've been even more like old times had Munch, Casey, Alex, Cragen, Warner and Wong were there instead of the other random characters I don't even know lol. But other then that seeing these two together again and Fin really felt like the magic had returned.
I feel that this crossover really cemented what Chris Meloni said about Elliot’s feelings for Olivia. That he loved her but didn’t know where to place it. And all throughout these two episodes you could see that playing out. He wants to be there for his wife, but at the same time...it’s Olivia...and the way he delivered lines like “if I heard your voice”... 😩😩 oohh says so much.
And then you see he’s trying to get close to her again, and shows this by standing close to her, trying to make small talk, grabbing her by the arm, etc. But Olivia can’t just yet. And the two biggest gestures of all...the hug and the letter. The hug shows that despite all that time, they’re there for each other in a way no one else can be. And the letter...I REALLY want to know what he wrote in that letter.
Maybe later in the season we’ll find out. I heard they will have more scenes together
When Kathy died, HE CALLED OLIVIA before calling the children. He needed her to help him steady so that he could tell his children. The ABSOLUTE best!

For reals!!! Stabler and Olivia were that married couple that could never be together physically due to their circumstances but shared an emotional love that no one could come close to. And after all the terrible atrocities they dealt with they always had each other to console. When Stabler left Olivia had to live through this crappy dark world by herself and found a way to move forward and has a son now. But after Stabler came back Olivia came back. The emotional vulnerable Olivia came back after 10 years and she wanted to hold Stabler and never let go but she couldn't because of Cathy and the pain she felt. Now that Cathy is gone , it will be interesting to see how they can repair their relationship. They have both lost two people that they did love dearly and they will never date again because the truth is they love each other and are SOULMATES. And hopefully they will have a deep conversation once their sounds have healed and confess the feelings they have felt since they became partners two decades ago!

I was kinda surprised when Noah came up & she didn’t introduce them. It shows she’s still hurt & angry. It will take time.
The regret in his eyes as he watches them walk away I think that was her way of saying you’re not a part of my life anymore ... they are both good actors.

Basically, Elliott is not yet part of her family, it's too soon. +if he is in the habit to walk away any time he thinks he has to, no need to introduce him to Noah who needs stability to grow.

When a significant relationship ends abruptly without real explanation, it's hard to say it can't be re-ignited.
I think it's good to have Stabler back but you have to admit that Olivia shouldered the show since season 13 and basically saved it. When no one believed in SVU without Stabler, Benson proved that her character was just getting started and gave us magnificent seasons, with an evolution of herself unthinkable. Today she is a Captain and Stabler a mere detective. Long live Olivia!
the only reason Stabler remained a detective because remember he retired from the NYPD in 2011 for nearly 10 years he was off the force, once he rejoined in 2019 in Rome, he still had the rank of Senior Detective, he should at least be Seargant, he would have been promoted if he stayed

The various channels that run SVU in syndication have been showcasing the seasons Elliott appeared in & highlighting some of his & Liv’s best episodes. USA, ION channel, almost every day, for the past several weeks.

This scene explains their situation perfectly. It wasn’t just the fact that Elliot left, it was the fact that he left without even talking to Liv. Hell Olivia had to find out from Captain Cragen, and she and Elliot hadn’t talked until tonight. At least with Munch and Cragen they at least told her.
Nobody wants to look at Stabler's side of this. He had to shoot a 16 year old girl who had been traumatized by losing her mother to a rapists, he probably was through with it. He took what sanity he had left and moved on to be happy with his family. Man had a wife and five kids to think about. I missed Elliot like crazy but I understood it. He could've told her but I felt that pain in his voice when he said he couldn't bear to tell her.

@@bhd7721 putting them together would destroy their chemistry. Their chemistry is about friendship not telling each other what to do which is what will inevitably happen. Elliot will make Olivia stay away from bad situations and Olivia will get offended thinking that Elliot thinks she’s incompetent. They are friends and that’s how it needs to stay.
I feel like half of the scene was not acting, because not only were Elliot and Liv so close, but so were Mariska and Chris. And Elliot/Chris leaving the show had a profound effect on Liv/Mariska. I'm sure some of the emotions were real.

True, in a recent interview Mariska said that she was heartbroken when Christopher left and had to try her best to do the show without him. They are very close friends in real life, so not seeing him nearly as often had to have been sad for her. At least she got to see him in real life though.

Man, you can see the genuine pain and sorrow in Stabler's eyes, and maybe that's how Meloni felt in that moment after initially leaving the show.

It took long enough but now is better than never that's for damn sure.
Coming from someone who has had mostly male friends throughout my teenage & adult years and whose best friend of about a decade is also a male; these two are definitely in love with each other. Just the way they look at each other, how they have such an emotional impact on one another that just hearing the others voice would cause them to completely change their mind on certain issues. Someone you love platonically doesn't usually have that kind of effect on you. Just my thoughts.
Thank you for sharing your perspective. I'm biased because I want them to confess their feelings and end up together, but it's nice hearing what you said as affirmation.

That was incredible acting by Mariska and why she gets the big bucks, the disorientation at the end was a fantastic choice. Chris Meloni was my favorite detective growing up, such an amazing scene.
I am SO GLAD Olivia didn't and isn't forgiving him so fast. I love the utter heartbreak and confusion and anger and hurt and pride that is exhibited. Stabler NEEDS to understand the pain he caused her.
Not only that, their lives are more complicated now. The four older Stabler kids would probably understand them getting together eventually, but Eli and Noah are gonna be interesting.
Havent watched this yet - but I’m so excited! If the whole episode has this feel to it, it’s going to be great! I’m so glad they took the time to acknowledge what happened, how Stabler left - that when he came back it wasn’t going to be all rainbows and roses. Their relationship needs healing and its great the writers are honoring that

He didn't mean it that way. He meant that when he was part of the squad he had free run, but since he left he is no longer an insider with the squad. It's like leaving a job/company you were at for years and then after a few years coming back. It's the same place but you can't go walking around like you used to.

I was emotional but not yet in tears.....until Liv got a call, stood up, and just so lost mumbling "where's the exit...". Like she was so hurt and needed to escape from that situation w/ Elliot but couldn't find the way out. It was so heartbreaking to see her so lost like that. absolutely

I have never seen Post Stabler but even I felt the impact of how long he's been gone and was so hyped to see him return and reunite with Liv and Fin too. SVU needed this BADLY! I haven't seen people this hype for this show in many years.
Yeah..more than ten years later and the chemistry is still there. There DID that! Its like they have this bond that's on another level. It's really fun to watch! also omg at Liv being so dizzy after this conversation, she couldn't even find the exit.
Season 2 of OC and I am still here... This is hands down one THE most heart wrenching scenes EVER! Unable to defend himself, Stabler could only fall back on his raw emotion and it is all so intense!

I think there was so much more that she wanted/needed to say, but she surveyed the setting and adjusted accordingly
I think it’s going to take more than just 8 episodes to get them on the right track. Like she said he was the single most important person in her life and he disappeared. Had he not left her she likely would not have been kidnapped (twice). She needed him more than anything with Lewis and he was not there. It’s going to take time for them to get right. And rightfully so. If the writers rush into it, it will ruin the show.
I really love how in these scenes with Stabler I don’t see “Captain Benson” I just see Liv. Both of them are more open, vulnerable and deep when they’re together. Their history just cuts through all the walls that they’ve built since being separated and in these moments, they’re just Liv and El.
This was actually personal. There was emotional pain when Christopher Melloni left Law & Order SVU before. They weren’t just acting here, and the longtime viewers could feel this moment.
She's hurt and angry,but there's no doubt Elliott can still affect her more than any other man in her life, for better or for worst.
I'm glad Elliot's back, SVU wasn't the same when he left. Olivia might not have said it out loud but she considered him a brother.
He was more than a brother to her, he was her person, her job was one half of her life and he was the other half (before Noah came along) and then he was just gone.

Chris and Mariska continued to see each other after Elliot left the show, and yet during this scene they’re upsetting and brutally so convincing, I’m voting for a EMMY for these two
They're going to get together eventually. The way they wrote him leaving and the way Liv reacted to it goes beyond partner heartbreak.
@Abby Castle I wouldn't call myself a rabbid shipper I'm just stating what I see. the dude literally said he loved her while he was looking right at her in the last episode we saw and didn't even try to cover. In front of his kids one of which even asked Liv back in the day if they had ever slept together no less. Then when he tried to call her after the I love you Olivia wouldn't take his calls after. If he just meant it platonically and she knew that why would she be actively laying awake avoiding his calls? If you really think they aren't building up to putting them together at this point you're blind.
@Abby Castle there are little comments here and there throughout the first 12 seasons and even now with his return that show they do actually love each other. Everyone sees it. Fin catching stabler up on the last 10 years, he won’t tell Elliot who the guy was because he knows he will get upset. Wheatley even knows. Back in season 7 when she didn’t shoot the suspect because she could hit stabler, he says I know you would have taken the shot she says no I wouldn’t have. You expect me to cause your death? What about your kids (not family, just the kids) what about me?
He got jealous anytime she was seeing someone or flirting. Cassidy when they were first sleeping together he calls her out on it. That fbi dude, he got jealous anytime they talked and actively intervened. There are plenty of scenes and small things to suggest their love was more than platonic. Her reaction when he left was not just a long time partner retiring.

This broke me. I have always admired these two. This is one of the most important character portrayals on television because these two are not just professionals they are the closest and deepest of friends. More than a spouse, I want that kind of friendship.
