    Funny things about the cold:
    Batteries are less efficient in the cold, but other electrical components, especially motors and cables, are more efficient- less resistance- when colder.
    Tires have less grip as well as the pavement, but a burnout can improve the tire side of the equation.
    Gas engines are harder to start with cold components and oil, but produce more power and efficiency in cooler, denser, drier air. Cold oil and battery make a car harder to start the first time, even though the starter motor works better.

    The dragrace Camaro was a real contender in the 1/8th mile track, although you would likely get around him in the 1/4 mile. It shows that much is decided with the light and R/T. I'm glad to hear that the Plaid has bounced back from the accident to race so soon, even though the expensive body repair is still to come.

    I'd still love to see you enter an actually bracket/footbrake race. You hit the tree fairly decent, it'd be fun to see you actually compete in competition.

    • @TeslaPlaidChannel
      @TeslaPlaidChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We've done it before, but the "grumbling" of the competitors took away most of the fun ("it's not fair!" and "the car is too consistent"). Also, it lacks the element of "going faster to beat" the other car, since the car in the next lane can be on a much slower index and still "win" even though their car is MUCH slower. (Not very exciting to viewers here.)

    Question, why do you not heat up your tires before a run? Would that not help you hook up better, particularly on cold evenings? I do not know the sport, just asking.

    • @TeslaPlaidChannel
      @TeslaPlaidChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two main reasons:
      -The Tesla won’t let the driver spin the tires except using “slip start” which is for getting OUT of snow or mud and incompatible with Drag Strip mode. It doesn’t work well, just a tiny bit of slip and is not good for the drivetrain.
      2) Summer radials don’t respond to a burnout like drag tires do. Watch Hellcats on stock tires get slower with bigger burnouts as their tires get greasy…

      @TeslaPlaidChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We've been wondering that also. But if we switch it out of Drag Strip Mode (to stop the heating process), then we can't use Launch Control. Experience suggests that it can't be much, since we've run within 0.01 seconds when at "2 minutes remaining" versus "Peak Performance Ready" on the same night on back-to-back passes.

      @TeslaPlaidChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But remember that the Camaro Red Lit (both races), so he lost both times anyway. Given enough of a head start like that, a lot of cars can cross the finish line first, but that's not 'winning'...

  • @chempowr
    @chempowr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great content as always. I really appreciate it. Some observations. When running the Camaro on the first run why wouldn’t you activate drag strip mode as soon as you get into it as your driving in the staging lanes versus activating it right before lining up to tree. Secondary, why wouldn’t you line up at the lights first instead of letting the other car do a burnout and you staging last. That way you could actually enter cheetah mode. I know you’ve done a ton of strip runs so maybe it doesn’t matter??

    • @TeslaPlaidChannel
      @TeslaPlaidChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All reasonable questions... In the first race with the Camaro, it was first known about 60 seconds before the video started. No advance warning. First priority is to get the helmet, collar, and gloves on. Next priority is to get the 3 GoPros turned on, otherwise there is no video of the race (like some of the runs that happened this week). Drag Strip mode makes a small difference and rarely decides the race, so it’s the last priority of these…
      Track etiquette is always to be ready (fully suited) when you get to the water box. But the most critical point of etiquette is not to “double bulb” the other car. Each car is supposed to get one staging bulb before anyone takes the second bulb. If I went all the way up to the start line (where the car needs to be for launch control), before the other car was inches from that same line, that would indicate a total noob jacka$$. No one wants to be “that guy”. 😃

      But older now and perpetual backaches are a real factor. Can’t spend hours leaning into an engine bay like I used to. But still want to go fast. Just like the guys rolling up in Redeyes, Demons, GT500s, and a wide variety of new cars that have over 700HP from the factory. Why shouldn’t all of these be welcome at the dragstrip too? New to the channel? As frequently explained, most local dragstrips only allow the Plaid to run if 100% Factory Production Stock. (And some tracks like Gainesville still won’t let it run flat out at all.) If any changes are made whatsoever, including tires, wheels, or weight reduction, then a Roll Cage must be added. I'm big into road racing' been doing it for many years, the reason you don't see videos of Tesla's doing that, it's because they can't compete with the old piston engine, had plenty come and give it a try, but they're slow and in about three or four laps they roll over and play dead.

      @@TeslaPlaidChannel I get what you're saying, the world record is among electrics, very good achievement, what I'm saying is you take a cheap ole Camaro in the hands of an amateur and turn faster laps, lap after lap, I really would be surprised if the Plaid could do two laps at the ring.
      At the tracks I do, they range from 2 miles per lap to 3.5 miles, and I have never seen an electric car do more than 4 or 5 laps.
      I'm open, I would drive one back and forth to work if someone gave me one and helped with the cost to operate it, at this time my work beaters are either a 96 olds Cutlass or a 96 Chevy Silverado, each one over 300 thousand miles and run perfectly, very cheap to operate.

    Turbo cars are not safe 🤔
    Irregular power Band
    Not Continuous power Delivery

      True for a few turbo cars, but most aren't unsafe

      @@jamesengland7461 Continuous power is Key for safety , even in Drag Racing , some cars the gas pedal is simply a on or off switch 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

    Electric cars should race in electric class only.
    Ridiculous

      Right, and rotaries can’t race other cars since they don’t have pistons.
      Diesels can’t race gas cars since they don’t burn gas.
      Turbos must be kept separate too.
      Superchargers alao.
      Nitrous? Don’t ask 🤪

    Don't try & compare eletric to raw power you will loose every time

      🤔 Not quite every time - The Tesla beats the *majority* of TRAILERED cars that it races against 👍
