At fourteen cylinders wtih bore of 96 cm, stroke of 2.5 m, three turbochargers, five decks (15 m high) operating rpm between 22 and 105, now these are huge! (Also my favourite engine). This here is SEMT Pielstick (SEMT = Société Etudes Machine Thématique) medium speed marine diesel from SEMT Pielstick, which is now part of MAN Diesel & Turbo SE.

Is the sound particular to Pielstick engine? I've never heard other big engine like MAN but I remember this sound from a long while ago at a power plant. There were 6 of this engine. Idling so sweet but they bring thunder when run at full load. Even the office building reverberate.
They are pretty large... even ships auxiliary engine exhaust is so large that you can fit in the pipe. When i still worked as maritime electrician i changed a light bulb at ships exhaust pipes. Main engines were off but auxiliary wasnt. After the bulb change i can tell my clothes needed wash. I still miss my work at maritime electrician... saddly i got diagnosed epilepsy that killed my career. 😪
what is that blue thing that is small and has the verry slow turning rod on it. i think it must be under some stress. slow but powerful. please tell me what it is.
