- A BLOODY LONG RUN - EPISODE 3: I find myself in good shape, in the mountains, about to start day two of running the 220km McMillans walking track. I'd failed on my first attempt 15 weeks earlier and was back, bearded, a little cagey, fresh off the back of some hard months of training in the hills. I was here for two reasons; to run the magnificent backcountry of my home state, and to think about my luck in life, and where this luck has come from.

"We don't tear things down. We recognise the legacy of these people and what they have done, as a remembrance, good or bad." - Cheryl Drayton. What a profound thing to say.
That's how it's done properly. Cancelling and burning down stuff does more harm than good in the long run. When something was awful we need to remember it, to improve things, to not repeat it, to learn, to better ourselves and the world. She is spot on.
Absolutely. Historical memory and justice important
profound, not sure about that, but maybe she said that for another reason.
The jews would be rightly outraged to leave up memorials of the achievements of Hiltler, or the Cambodians a memorial to Pol Pot, or Port Arthur to have a memorial to mass murderer Bryant. Or imagine if your entire family was murdered how would you feel about having a memorial erected in your town hounouring the murderer. Would you want it pulled down, or at very least modified.
If McMillian murdered scores of other white settlers who had names, Im sure there would have been no appetite to put up a memorial in his honour. The many people McMillian did murder did not have names, and we dont even really want to know about them or who there were, because sadly many Australians consider those particular humans at that time as not so much human. Typically out of respect we like to name, honour and remember the victims, like the memorial at Port Arthur. But it seems when Aboriginal Australians were the victims we don't really care to know, and we like to think history began when people like McMillian arrived
I suspect Elder Cheryl like most Elders have learnt that to protest such things brings futher wrath upon themsleves, as they understand the racist tones and are told to shut up and get over it.
If memorials and landmarks are going to remain standing for a mass murderer, then there much more importantly needs to be much larger memorials erected honouring those he murdered and truth telling of their stories.
@@RooDavis I bet she appreciates someone else explaining her reasoning away as internalized fear instead of listening what she has to say and taking her word. Thats the really classy move.
Any such historical moment comes with a sobering and profound learning opportunity. I think the elders recognize this, that the meaning of such a monument endures as the distance between its original celebratory function and its contemporary, ironic significance grows: what was once intended to celebrate a man now endures as an ironic reminder of his brutality. Such learning must come at the hands of skilled and dedicated educators, and the learning must be gleaned heuristically by the students from facts. When such topics are properly framed, and when unvarnished facts are presented, students make their own authentic meaning of history, in ways that are instinctively moral, profound, and lasting.
"It's like I've been in a bar fight... but I won. Barely."
Excellent metaphor 😂
I thought so
That’s not just a bloody long run, that’s a bloody good film!
And you're a bloody great person ❤
The other day, I had one of the mentally worst days of recent years. I literally thought to myself what you would do Beau. So I grabbed my running shoes and just started running without any clear goal in mind. This day, I completed my first half marathon at age 27, a little more than 1.5 years after surgery that threatened to end all sportive activities of mine for years to come.
I know this doesn't relate to this (great) film. It might also not seem much to many, but you have no idea what it means to me and I feel like I have to write this and to say thank you.
You helped, inspired and eventually made me turn one of the worst days into a very good one after all. Thank you Beau for being a legend and constant source of inspiriation. And for reminding me that boundaries of what one can achieve really only exist inside your own head. Keep killing it.
+
While Beau inspired you, recognise that you took action of your own accord to get out of your own head. That takes some serious mental fortitude , well done mate
💫
👍👍
I’m in the process of trying to start my life over. Quit drugs and alcohol, dealing with things that would likely traumatize my entire family and feeling a sense of disorientation that overwhelms me.
I came back to this guy for the same reason you did; a little insight into what a balanced, content man does in his life.
That last interaction with the bar owner is was one of the cutest conversations I've seen. Great series!
I think about the "1 granule of rubber from my shoe left behind" a lot. Everywhere we go, we leave a trail of some sort, whether we see it or not. Good on ya Beau! Your stories and nuggets of wisdom are always a treat!
when your circle of influence turns inwards to survival -- you start reckoning the path you leave behind
Congratulations, Beau, on finishing this epic run and this powerful series. I admire your courage, endurance, and honesty. You did a great job of honoring the Kurnai people and exposing the atrocities of McMillan. You inspire me to be brave, humble, and respectful. Your videos are always captivating and educational. I can’t wait to see what you do next. Well done!
Ta Brian. Thanks for tuning in mate
I love that you added the Elder's words to your trek, it is a such a great perspective - just the awknowledgment of their culture and lives on the landscape and their continued perserverence and connection to that landscape is profoundly inspirational.
Thanks Rae. Nice to have you here
Hey Beau, don't know whether you remember but I ran your backyard marathon on 6 Dec last year. You came out to greet me around the mile 15 mark. I was a bit too starstruck to say much. Got there in the end, just under 4 hours, It was one of my last adventures before I returned back home to Sweden after 4 years down under. Thanks for everything, you remain one of my greatest inspirations, not only in running but life in general, good on ya!
What was his backyard marathon?
@@MargotHypnos the road that surrounds the block of land Beau lives on is a mile long. So you just have to run it 26.2 times and there you have your marathon ;). So I decided to pay homage to Beau and to run my first marathon in a special way.
@@Hampusmorerunning Well done!
“I think about my hip joints grinding down, and the death of my body through this, and about life if I’m killing my body or keeping it alive. All I do is wonder, cause all I’m doing is running!”
The beer at the end had me laughing a bit too loud on the Dreadmill! Good on ya Beau, what a beauty!
Thank you for making this. Thank you for inspiring people to enjoy nature.
I almost exclusively watch TH-cam on my phone, but for Beau's videos, I wait until I'm able to watch on a computer. The cinematography is worth the wait.
I wonder if the elders can see how profoundly their wisdom and character has influenced all Australian people, invaders as well as indigenous - it’s clear to me on the other side of the planet that there is nowhere else on earth where men possess such honesty, camaraderie, humour and respect for each other. That certainly did not come from Britain or Europe, and is a magic seed that has grown into a fine and unique tree.
“He’s got a sniffer home” I love that. Perfectly describes the feeling of pushing through that last bit
Watched this at just the right time in my life. Sometimes you need a bit of Beau to keep you on track. Thankyou mate!
“Is that sucker open” killed me 🤣😂 I love your spirit, Beau. You and your crew have my full respect. Congrats, well done.❤️
Also: I really appreciated the quotes during the film. That really went deep on me. Thank you.
Everything that guy says is quoteable. "It's a stonkin hot day!"
absolutely,@@Turnoutburndown! However, this was simply my personal highlight. 🤣
This last portion of the video is absolutely fantastic, such an amazing storyteller. You are an incredible inspiration Bo. I have been sharing your videos with friends and family over the last few years. The cinematography is beautiful and your backing tracks are absolutely spot on. Love to hear Tomas Novoa coming back.
Totally agree with all points here. Well put.
Walking the river looked like every step was a potential ankle-breaker. This series has been a huge privilege to watch. The first attempt was a hard watch - I was a Marine for 20 years and have seen blokes run to collapse and done it myself a couple of occasions myself. The dehydration hallucinating episode was a little too close to home. Setting off in the dark with your breath illuminated by a head torch, having to double back after a navigation error, and wrestling with the knowledge you've added a bunch of wasted miles. The difference of having company or having to go it alone is something you only understand if you have that experience; if not, you simply don't have the frame of reference to understand what it can be like. And all this in the backdrop of terrain that only a few people can live in, move through, be a part of or imagine exists. It has another worldly quality to some of it. The three videos so far have been epic, in the genuine sense of the word- a different scale from routine life. Thank you for sharing them.
Absolutely loved it Beau, thanks for entertaining us and driving us. To beau, Charlie and the film crew, a bloody great flick and 3 part series. I love our country and learning about it this way.
Thanks kid.
best quote ever... " all I do is wonder because all I'm doing is running " and put that into the context of many other situations besides this trek.... very interesting indeed
We’d all be much better off with a ‘Charlie’ looking after us! Legend!
Another great film Mr. Miles.👏
Your videos always find a way to make me misty-eyed and grateful to live on this beautiful earth. Thank you for another great journey!!
Right now I'm chock full of way too much pasta, haven't run more than a couple of kms in over a year and just finished my 5th hour straight on the couch but bloody hell, I'm going to track down my old runners and go for a jog. Thanks for the inspo Beau
Beau; your videos have it all. An interesting story (seldom, if ever, known), superb camera work, music that fits each part as if written for it, humour and a sensitivity for the country and indigenous people who lived there before anyone else. Thank you for another short masterpiece.
Oh, and blackberries? Yep - bastards.
Amazing. What an effort from the whole team! We desperately need to be better at acknowledging the legacy and letting us shape the future in Australia. Thanks for tackling a hard topic in your way. Was struck by the metaphorical mountain and hard track we as Australia's must continue to climb.
Truly a beautiful and cinematic series. I loved that you posted the first attempt, reminding even the most elite runners and hikers that we are all fallible. Thank you as always, Beau!!!❤
Gee whiz - our Australian landscapes are just stunning and gorgeous. Ripper vid, Beau.
You’ve got me through some hard times beau. You’re outlook on life is wonderful and ultimately contagious. I’m so happy I found you mate.
Yes, first like 14 seconds after upload. I don't need to see it to know I like it ya ripper! 😊
More like a bloody spectacular effort (twice I might add)!
I appreciate your very Aussie stories so much, I've been saving this trio of videos up since you posted the final one; waiting for a quiet evening on my own so I could immerse myself interruption-free into the scenery and this amazing tale of Beau putting his body (and mind evidently) on the line yet again to add another amazing tale to the moving collection of stories you have brought us so far. The addition of real-time insights from the elders added a dose of wisdom, and does make one wonder why you did this the hard way again LOL. I for one hope you never tell these stories any other way than the hard way Sir Miles, because it makes them more bloody spectacular!.
Inspirational and thoughtprovoking. Thank you for bringing us along and sharing your inner monologues.
Beau, this series (and most of your videos) for me has gone really deep into the soul and history of Australia - and it somehow gives me the strength to continue to think about the other one, the neighbours we don’t see often, people suffering from an illness I know nothing about. But also, it gives me serenity, to not swear at people overtaking me in the wrong lane, to accept things aren’t always what you want - or need. Thanks.
Thanks for an amazing series Beau! Inspiring and thought provoking as always! I love the wondering and pondering I do when I watch your videos, your words are powerful and have a way of vibrating my inner being! Love it
Another masterpiece. So grateful to you for making such inspiring and thought-provoking films.
Beau you Beaut! This makes me really miss walking in the Australian bush, nothing like it on the planet, beautiful and serene, but also brutally unforgiving. Time to get the fitness back and plan another trip down under!
This whole series has been so lovely. The friendships and relationships with people underpins the success of anyone’s life.
I get such a good feeling watching these videos. They give a whole new outlook on life and what we can achieve if we just go for it. I like when you said "All I do is wonder, because all I'm doing is running."
I love your videos Beau....you are an inspiration to all of us odd adventurers who do things just for the sake of doing them. This one resonates not just because of the task, but also the wisdom imparted by Cheryl Drayton. Someone the world should be listening to now more than ever. Love to you and yours Beaudy! 🥰 xx
I like how it turned into a bigger picture, showing your supporting companions. The drone shots are AMAZING. Your narrative around human beings impact on each other and the environment are powerful and much respected.
What a lovley conclusion! I absolutley adored watching that series. Thank you!
Wonderful, thank you Beau and the Team. So much respect to the Kurnai Elders for their grace, I loved their comments throughout.
Another brilliant beau adventure completed! Congrats fella. Really appreciate your guys time and effort as always. Hope you and the family are keeping well. Good on ya, from Wales UK.
A series that's just getting better and better. Incredible stuff Beau, and telling a story far too few of us have heard of. The Europeans were indeed the only true "savages" there, a history everyone in Scotland should know. What an amazing crew to have along with you too, just a great bunch of lads - love it.
Congratulations and as always, thank you for taking us along!
Amazing landscapes and beautiful storytelling -- thank you Beau!
Bloody wonderful stuff and beautiful landscape. Congratulations Beau, and thanks for sharing this story, the reality of this history.
Well done Beau, another magnificent and thoughtful film, and credit to Charlie as well, like the credits, everyone needs a Charlie.
Beau, you’re an inspiration on so many levels. These three videos have been a wonderful history lesson of your beautiful country, and your positive attitude and incredible storytelling have been a joy to watch. Thank you 🙏☺️
Absolute legend Beau mate! Got my eyes set on ticking off the AAWT, McMillans and the Vic section of the BNT. Love seeing videos like these of our great tracks through the High Country
Beau, this was freakin' amazing. Watched all vids in a single session. What you did here inspires me to go explore the wild more. It's something I haven't done for far too long. Thank you!
Your ability to tell stories and weave them seamlessly into hard physical challenges is impeccable beau, thanks for making these videos.
Your editing, your devotion, your talent! Its inspirational, this video touches me deeply, Australia is a beautiful country.
Bloddy awesome Beau. Incredibly inspiring and insightful series. The quote at the end was perfect. Bravo 👏
I enjoyed this 3 part film very much.
You are a bloody good story teller.
I'm always excited when i see a new Beau video in my feed
That’s an epic film! You have an incredible way of capturing the moment and emotion. Love it Beau!
A beautifully constructed story that weaves the epic physical feat with the deeper stories of the land and the people. Thank you!
Simply amazing! Thanks Beau!
Looking forward to this so much!
A fantastic piece of work guys. Thanks for making and sharing it 🙏🌞👍
Omg I love your words !! Keep going...keep telling us about your adventures!! Your awesome 😊
Amazing effort Beau and a great series to watch!
Thanks for sharing it with us, Beau!
Incredible achievement Beau, beautifully filmed and edited. Can’t wait for the next challenge
amazing film you motivate me so much and im sure everyone else watching, thanks for all you do Beau and team !
I love it, what beautiful countryside, excellent run Beau thank you for sharing this with us.
Thank you and a big congratulations Beau !
Beau, you legend. I've watched pretty much all of your videos, and that might well be the best. Really thought provoking, beautiful and inspiring.
The comments by the indigenous elders were also beautifully done. Well done mate.
Thanks HB. Nice to have you here
Loved this series Beau - can really tell a lot of hard work and graft was put in by the whole team. Those are the best sorts of adventures, I reckon! Was also delighted to see Kelly's Hut in there - it's a place I explored myself back in 2017 and it took me right back
I always look forward to your videos Beau. I just love that you just be who you are. Great series in all respects. Congratulations, glad you didn’t need to start a third time. You have great friends. It was very special that you included quotes from the elders 👍
Gidday Beau , thx for you videos mate , I bushwalked this area in the 1980s , I tracked many of Mc Millians track and can testify to its beauty and remoteness. I too spent years questioning the bustards who cut this land up , claiming spoils of death along the way , they must have been hard bustards can it's bloody hard county . Anyway keep ya knees knocking and hips a grinding, your much appreciated..
Beautiful video mate. Well done on the run. The Kurnai story is heartbreaking, thanks for telling a little bit of it.
Thank you. When I’m not allowed on a trail, your movies are the closest I come to feeling free. That’s been very important to me.
Go well David.
I just cried into my beer in your honor Sir. You are truly inspiring. Well done Team!
Incredible film series Beau. This is a beautifully put series. I love the Storytelling and the inspirational journey.
Your TH-cam channel is like nothing else and you are like no one else, thank you for sharing!!
It’s not about the run it’s about all of it
The ups and downs the knowledge
Thanks Bou a treat to watch
In just over 1 month I’m quitting my job and heading from London to Oz to learn about this amazing country. To follow in even a few of your footsteps would be a dream come true. You’re a true inspiration Beau
Should be good timing, the +40 C days will be less frequent. We are melting here atm.
Well done! Excellent video as per usual, and a great support team.
Good shit Beau and crew. Thanks for the videos. Helps fire the motivation motor in me seeing you do this huge trek.
You Sir are an absolute legend. Admire your strength and tenacity, above all your desire to move and be active in the outdoors.
Epic quest, thoughtful commentary, and excellent cinematography. Love the day 3 sunrise at 9:40.
That was awesome Beau the country side and those beautiful valleys and rivers just stunning mate good on you.
Love your work! I always leave your videos calmer, entertained, more educated (even if it's something weird lol) and inspired. It's so enjoyable to watch films from not so far away in Vic, showing me things about home I've never noticed. Thank you for these awesome films. God bless you and your family!
Your amazing dude, love it all and I think without people like you life would become a little worse off. Thank you
There is no part of this that wasn't absolutely great. What a run, what a story, what a film. Incredible.
Thanks again Beau
Inspirational Beau, thank you!
Very inspiring video. I now want to push myself harder and also spend more time in nature. Thanks mate.
I know you have worked really hard on your videos and I can tell you it has really been worthwhile.
Keep bringing them out mate I’ve watched them all and I want to see more.
As a local lad of the Dandenong ranges I find these videos so close to home.
Finally someone realised how amazing our bush really is and there’s no need to travel to some foreign country when we have so many adventures to behold only a short drive away.
I’m 50 years old and find your videos to be of great inspiration.
It’s hard to find the time these days I know and with family obligations being of utmost importance to you,it must be difficult to find those many hours needed to produce these great videos, but know that you have made a real difference to someone’s life because of it.
Keep ‘em coming brother 👍👍👍
Thanks Dan. Nice to have you here mate
Thanks Beau for your videos. You’ve inspired me to take up trail running which I’ve decided I absolutely love! Signed up for the UTA100 in May and as part of my training I just knocked off the entire Great Ocean Walk solo in one night. When the pain in my feet set in I couldn’t stop thinking about your discomfort and issues of your first attempt of the Mcmillan track. 😂
Beautiful series of videos, Beau. The adventure, the sights, and your (you and your community) handling of uncomfortable history are all inspiring. Thank you.
Just about to embark on my own 220km big trail over 5 days in Tanzania. There's something incredible about how the body just gets on with it, no matter how gubbed you feel. Running long in one go is great, but you miss something along the way, too busy fuelling and managing it all. Taking a few days instead gives you time to take it in and reflect each day on what's just happened and where you've been . It is abstract to most, but journeys like this are absolute magic. Connect with the world you live in, be all in and the rewards are immeasurable. Another great story and adventure had Beau
There were no Blackberries when McMillan did it, 13 varieties were introduced into the Bot gardens Melbourne in mid to late 1800s. Great to see Ordie, Hi Pal, we went to school together. I think the region grows adventurous people connected with nature. I was a tree climber for decades, now l sail the qld coast, then next is a lap of the world.
That internal dialog really rang a bell. You're such a poet. Great effort and video, mate
Superb series. Walking the track of those who came before forces us to consider the track we are leaving! Be better. Thanks for the effort on these productions!
Brilliant beau , really enjoyed that
Great series by my fave TH-camr. Love all your vids!
Such an inspiration, such beautiful country.
Well done Beau! Will definitely put it on our bucket list and do this trail one day
Good to know that finishing a trail run only to find a closed pub is a nationwide problem Beau. Haha. Well done on getting in.
'Give me a mini,' Such an Aussie response. Loved it, great way to wrap things up Beau. Cheers
''give me a minute'' is said all over the world my guy. lol
