- On September 22, 2018, we said farewell to the most magnificent wolf we have ever known. Ambassador wolf Atka died in his sleep at 16 years old; his passing was painless and peaceful with his family surrounding him.
While Atka leaves a hole in our lives so big that words can't describe it, his impact on wolf conservation persists and can not be overstated.
Atka is an Inuit name meaning guardian spirit, and his brilliant spirit lives on in those whose hearts he warmed, minds he opened, and souls he touched.
He instilled compassion, understanding, and awareness to the hundreds of thousands of people he met over his storied career. We will be better and do better because Atka lived. He will empower us to continue the fight to safeguard the wild legacy he leaves behind.
Thank you, Atka. We'll never stop loving you.
Atka, born in 2002, was a captive-born Arctic gray wolf at the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC), a 501c3 non-profit organization, in South Salem, NY. He was one of the four 'ambassador wolves' at the WCC that help teach the public about wolves and their vital role in the environment.

Heartbreaking! I am so happy to have met him 3 times at WCC. I just lost my 16-yr old dog yesterday, so we mourn together. These 2 warriors howl in the heavens together running free.
I had a dog that lived to be 17 and a cat that lived to be 20! Sorry for your lose.
I've been watching Atka since 2010, when I first began college...kept up with him all through school...his videos kept me company many lonely hours while researching for papers in the library. He's been my friend for so many years...miss you, Atka!

I was born in May 15th 2002... Almost the same age of Atka, I “met” him about 3yrs ago as I first subscribed this channel, he was such a wide experienced wolf that I could hear wisdom in his howl and see calmness in his eyes. I wonder why Mother Nature makes wolves to enjoy much shorter lifespan as humans... prays from another side of Pacific Ocean, from a southern China city.
You've impacted so many lives, and so many hearts. May the stars brighten your path as you chase the stars, you are greatly missed. Thank you for purifying our hearts.

Such a magnificent, beautiful inspiring creature. What really made me choke up was the thought that humans could hunt & Maim & kill such an animal,that you actually have to campaign to protect them to stop them becoming extinct.! I literally broke down into tears watching this... Atka was a huge inspiration, loving, fun, caring, trustful, happy, and amazing wolf to me. I love him more than everything. He has touched me in an amazing way, and I will never forget that. Him passing away, left a huge hole in my life. He created lasting memories that I will never forget. Thank you. It was so moving I could not help but think of my precious dog that died over 10 years ago now. These animals ask so little of our world and yet we demand and take so much from theirs. I was so moved too!

So sad. I have been a wolf lover all my life. This was one special wolf. When we hear the howls, we will always remember Atka.
Atka was my favorite wolf of all time. I even dreamed of going to where Atka is and give him a hug to show how much I love him. But I guess it was never meant to be. I miss him as much as I miss my late grandma who passed away last Friday. I love wolves and Atka is my favorite wolf of all. I have no doubt that he's with God now.
More people need to know and educated. Wolves have a purpose and need there environment.

I took my kids to see the wolves in the late spring/early summer of 2018. I was most impressed with Atka. Was great just watching him do his thing. A photo I took of Atka has been my phone wallpaper since then. (Sorry to my kids if they are reading this.) Was a hell of a bummer the day I found out he was gone, but so happy knowing we got to see him at least once.
He was such an amazing wolf we will miss him.

When i was in kindergarten or so i remember coming here on a field trip with my mom and dad greatest experience ever until we saw atka and the experience got better. Really wished i could have seen him atleast one more time
