I worked at a gas station when I was younger, and the lottery is a lot sadder than just this. It's a commentary on the state of our country. For a huge portion of the country, it's literally their only shot at upward mobility. For a lot of other people, it's just a sad addiction.

They are told, "there is a chance that you'll never need to worry about any financial problems for the next 5 generations if you give me two dollars. I have a family member and coworker who have gambling addictions, specifically for lottery tickets. They each probably spent enough money to buy a house with, easily hundreds of thousands of dollars each because every single spare cent that is strictly for the absolute necessary is spent on them. They each probably only managed to win MAYBE 10-20K. It's sad, but I don't feel sorry for them. You don't need to be extraordinarily intelligent to figure out the cost-benefit ratio of their addiction, nor the consequences of it. One of which being their constant bitching about not having any money. When barely make 700 a week working, and spend on average 300-500 dollars a week on lotto tickets, I cannot possibly comprehend how one could be broke in such a scenario I just can't figure it out it's like Einstein level shit. Ironically enough, or maybe not so depending on perspective, Ian's shtick of bullying people who buy lotto tickets is probably the only way to genuinely end the predatory practice. Humans are herd animals and follow whatever is the most immediately socially acceptable. So if you truly care about these people, then treat them like utter shit until they stop

However the amount is pretty low on those usually. You should use a third to a half of your winnings to play again if you choose to so you still come out profitable. Next time if there is a next time buy 3 of the same 5$ ticket and odds are you should win on one of them.

My aunt has played the lottery for the last 20 or so years, and she won 4k about a year to buy us some new carpet.

I used to work at a gas station. People treated it like their own personal casino. The worst I’ve ever seen it was a man coming in and spending $500 each day. He would come after he picked his son up from school and would have his son with him for hours playing scratch off tickets. He’d win a couple thousand every couple of months but he was losing way more.
I went to a gas station with my brother and then his buddy walked in and we were there for about 3 hours and he spent like 700 and the other dude blew his whole check and my brother had to buy his daughter a cake still ….

I work at a gas station that’s pretty notorious for lottery in my area... there are a few people who come in that spend upwards of $200 every single day. Most people know that there’s not really a chance of them winning or even just getting their money back, but in my opinion it’s more of an addiction than anything else.
Playing the lottery is an addiction some have but if they took that average of $200 per year and instead invested it in stocks or a fixed interest savings account and saved for years they would have a much better chance of accruing wealth than playing the lottery. You basically turn a 1 in 1 trillion odd of winning millions into a 1 in 1 chance (with a savings account or other guaranteed form of saving) of increasing your wealth

I think the funniest thing about people who play the lottery is that the money that they're spending on tickets could actually be used for real investing. Like, people who repeatedly buy tickets every week/month could put that money into an IRA, stocks/bonds, you name it, and over the course of several decades you would have a surprisingly large amount of cash.

I remember channel surfing back in the day and found a reality TV program that showed what lottery winners were doing with their winnings. They featured this one elderly couple (they must have been 70-80 years old) and the husband before winning was a truck driver who at that point was still working and unable to retire. They won something like 12 million dollars and what do they decide to do with it? They buy a huge lot and all this construction equipment, and the husband insists that he’s gonna build a whole mansion from scratch. You see this feeble old man working a crane by himself and moving all this raw equipment around. He doesn’t hire any workers because he’s an “old fashioned” kinda guy who believes that you’re not truly a man unless you can put your own roof over your head.
I saw that program 10-15 years ago. Do you think that guy completed the instruction before he died? Probably not, but you know that a million blue-collar construction workers watching that program yelled “Hell Yeah, Brother! That’s what you do! I’m gonna buy myself more tickets!”. The propaganda around it is just utterly disgusting.

The best thing about the lottery is the hope scholarship in Tennessee. People pay a few dollars here and there for hope and end up actually giving "hope" to students who depend on that money to get through college.
We had economical classes back at school, they never taught us that the lottery is a scam, that many banks rob people, how banks rob people.
