      kym newman In aviation the PIC is the person that will make the call at the end of the day. Unfortunately the PIC in this aircraft accident did not listen to he’s college, as result of dead. F/O couldn’t do anything, so pls don’t say it was the F/Os horrendous decision. Keep in mind that the PIC can detain anyone from crew to passenger, PICs can also write a complaint and most likely get the F/Os/Crews license suspended. If your not the PIC you’re not the one who makes the decisions at the end.

      i came down here looking for this comment because im not sure if it's fair or not. the video said the capt's compass was off because the proximity to the north pole and in fact incorrectly showed the plane to be getting back on course. it's possible that he thought the first officer was incorrect and chose to trust his own instruments. admittedly the capt probably should have explored further why the f.o. was saying to go around, but i dont think it's as cut and dry as it seems at first.

    Thanks for covering this crash. I remember it having flown into Resolute with First Air about 10 years earlier. Fortunately on my flight it was sunny and clear and quite a view!
    Seems like a bad design to have the auto-pilot change mode because a flight crew nudged the column - but ultimately it was the crews responsibility to notice this and go around as soon as anything seemed amiss. Especially in dense fog.

      @suestoons 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I lived in Rez for two years in the late '80s and took this flight *so* many times. A co-worker of mine who was set to retire perished on this flight.

    • @scottfranco1962
      @scottfranco1962 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the disconnect by flight crew manipulating the yoke is quite deliberate. If the pilot needs to suddenly take control, say to avoid the ground or another plane, he may not have time or presence of mind to hit the A/P disconnect. A/Ps are generally designed both to disconnect on force, but also (on small airplanes) have clutches that allow the pilot to overpower the A/P. This is not just a pilot thing. If (say) the A/P cannot hold a climb because the aircraft is out of trim, it is designed to disconnect. Otherwise it could break something by force.
      The key element is that the A/P sounds a loud alarm when it disconnects. I didn't see a discussion of that here.

He could see that they no longer were centered on the localizer and he called it out. If the CVR captured him declaring an unstable approach and go-around 18 times as they approached minimums he seems to have done his job as pilot monitoring.

    Tips and commentary:
    Channels like Kings and Generals do simultaneous narration and (de)activatable subtitles, which can also be translated into other languages. This way they don't conflict with any on-screen text. I really like how they do narration, but much of that could be due to the narrator being a native English speaker with a British accent. (I'm a non-native myself)
    In the context of a lecture or discussion I don't mind non-native speakers, but in documentaries it gives me a subjective feeling of inferior quality (which may or may not be justified).
    Like most fans here, I've grown accustomed to the on-screen text, especially when it comes down to technical aviation terminology I'm unfamiliar with and could easily look look up on Wikipedia (for example, the word "livery" was completely new to me but it has a Wikipedia page which explains it all) if it's written out than when I need to rely on someone's pronunciation. Especially non-native speakers are at risk of getting the phonetics wrong, even more so when it's a rare word they themselves have never heard native speakers pronounce. As a result, the audience can be confused and may have no way to pause the video to look up a word they don't even know how it's written and may be inadvertently mispronounced by the narrator.

  • @felliongi219
    @felliongi219 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I really liked the new style! With the narration you got over the mandatory facts at the start quicker and could sneak in more details along the way. I think it would be great to start videos that way (but with voiceover and subtitles), telling us more about the background. As soon as the first errors are made / things are starting to heat up, I would just retreat to the old style, so one gets more immersed into the setting. Basically just a little earlier than in this video. I think that compromise would basically cover the main arguments against commentary penetrating the comments right now.
    Anyways, great job! Never worte any comments although I really appreciated everything for quite a long time.

    An unstable approach is dangerous even in good weather and good visibility! About a month ago PIA flight 8303 started their descent into Karachi airport way too late and landed way too fast and without its landing gear down (possibly because of over speed) pounding and scraping both engines on the tarmac 3 different times before initiating a go around. The damage was done and they didn’t quite make it back around and killed everyone on board and a child on the ground. A stabilized approach that both the pilot in command and the monitoring pilot agree on is absolutely critical!

    Why didn't the captain just go around, even when the first officer urged him, he didn't. Blame on the captain. There should be a law that when any one of the crew says it is wrong and want to go around, there must be a go around. Most of the cases, captain's descision ends up in tragedy ☹️

      Allegheny Airlines Flight 485 was brought down in a similar fashion...NTSB made some recommendations, but it looks to still be a problem here 40 years later...Sad.

      A first officer isn't just along for the ride. If I had been FO on that flight, I would have initiated a go around by myself and dealt with the consequences later. With all the information on the flight recorder, he would have been vindicated, and if not, he'd still be alive and so would all of the passengers. Some rules are meant to be broken. Nothing makes me more nervous than flying an approach when I'm behind the airplane. Always go around if things aren't looking right, and live to tell the story.

    Was a very sad day.
    I have been a passenger a few times out of Inuvik NT to Edmonton AB.
    Fantastic crew, treated everyone great, especially catered to children's comfort.

    My father was a pilot for first air for decades and he told me that he knew the pilots personally and when the Mayday episode came out he cried watching it. One of the first air tails had a photo of northern lights that he took himself on it for a couple years.
